L always had another case to go to even if he solved the Kira case. Light has nothing else in his life but the Kira case. As soon as Light ended the "game" with L, he lost his reason for living.
Light never truly wanted to be a god, he just wanted to prove he had no equal. When he accomplished that goal his life became meaningless, and he subconsciously got sloppy so someone could play cat and mouse with him again with disastrous results since he lowered his standards to continue the "game.."

    Complex scene.
In L's mind - Kira has returned. Light Yagami is acting off, not in tune with his past self. There's only 1 conclusion to be drawn - Kira has somehow returned to controlling Light.
Or perhaps it's more likely Light gave away the notebook & has gotten possession back. The identity of Kira was held within the book itself. In his search to prove Light's guilt, he's unleashed the real Kira once again.
L worries the Light he knew of recently was always capable of becoming Kira. That despite it all - Kira is his true unfiltered soul.
You test a man's character through power - and Light has failed. L wonders if he would also fail.
If somebody as clever, well adjusted, heartfelt & honest could become a ruthless monster - then it means everyone is a monster, right? We can chalk it all up to the Death Note corrupting everyone, it's not their fault. We're only human.
Or - the more terrifying answer. The one L truly fears.
Light was never corrupted by the Death Note. He was only revealed for the special type of monster he is. One of those lying monsters that L warns of in the Relight films.
A monster that lies. Posing as human, without humanity. Eating, without hunger. Studying with no interest. Seeking love with none to give. L believed himself to be this monster.
Now he's being eaten by one. Light is assuming the identity of L, his tactics, his planning, he's consuming L entirely. He's going to continue to devour L until Whammy's House is gone. Kira would have no issue wiping out an orphanage if he thought they posed a threat.
Light Yagami is L's vision of himself being spat back at him.
Long before Kira, long before the notebook - Light Yagami lies. Whether he knew it or not, Light had Kira buried in his soul. A true monster. Lying to even himself.
L here is making a genuine attempt to ask if Light has always been this way. No bullshit, no tricks - is that the real you? Is Light in there? Have you just been corrupted?
    Light fails.
    He knew L knew.
He could've just said yes. He could've let it all drop for one second & be a human.
Instead Light presented this almost rehearsed response to being confronted - equating his behaviour to others & excusing any wrongdoing in his life. Light truly understood L's request, truly understood L knew the game was coming to an end & STILL lied. That's why Light's smirk at L in his final moments is so gut-wrenching. Light could've continued to lie - as he normally would. But no, Light had one reason to reveal the truth.
He needed L to know he beat him.
He's essentially denied being Kira for the last time, even when L gave him an opportunity to stop playing before the game ends. Light even repeats this later - declaring victory at the last second. Not to drop the facade, but to gloat. He did the same to Naomi. The only other ever person to see the monster.
This is when L realised who Light truly was.
    Light Yagami isn't Kira.
Kira is wearing Light Yagami like a suit.
He's irredeemable. He lies. He's L's darkest reflection. He's never been under the influence of the Death Note or a Death God, or anyone else.
It's just been an evil boy doing these things.
And L pitied him to an extent, knowing his end would be Near.

As much as I enjoyed watching Light as Kira, it was really satisfying seeing him struggle to keep up the charade. Now that he has his memory back, he can't figure out how the GOOD Light would respond to the lying thing, and it shows when he hesitates and then skirts around the question. Light giving the perfect answer to L's question about ever telling the truth is the perfect example of how L knows light is kira. Light always has the perfect answer/solution/alibi of how he isn't Kira. But the problem is, why would someone that's innocent try so hard to be innocent? @@5hk33zn Difference between trying to relentlessly prove your innocence and trying to look innocent. Like the difference between Light (when he lost his memories of Kira) and Kira (with all the memories). Light when he lost his memories desperatly tried to prove his innocence. L even picked up on this a few times and thought by himself why he was suddenly acting so different and actually began thinking he was innocent. L didn't think he was wrong about Light because people were still dying while Light was locked up in jail, but because Light was acting so differently and not as Kira anymore. Kira on the other hand was always cool-headed, always was at the right place the right time and said the right things at the right time. L may have felt he was the closest to relating to him but this would show that L actually has no one who relates on the planet. If they did relate, Light would've realized this was the one time he could've told L, "I lie all the time" and that would've genuinely thrown L off. Light making this BS excuse shows he's not as smart as he wants to think. Light's ego was ultimately his downfall, and that's why I think introducing Near after L was a mistake. When L died, Lights' ego was at its peak, Light needed L to stay on top of his game, and without him Light started to make careless mistakes. Mistakes he still would have made without Near, because L was Lights' ultimate adversary and his ultimate triumph. Near was not necessary because the story would have ended similarly without him. And it would have ended soon after L died, which would have been way more poetic, but I'm thinking they wanted to stretch the series out a bit longer for sales.

I actually liked the point Near served. Granted I do think that's the weakest part of the series but I feel that Near played two significant roles. 1. Many people theorized that L ultimately lost because he put Light up on this platform and fed into his ego. L considered this to be his greatest case whereas Near never lost sight of who Light truly was, a murderer who just happened upon the greatest weapon in human history.
      2. Near was lesser than L, in fact Light perfectly predicted his plan and would have won. However Mello's random act of chaos allowed Near to gain a much needed clue to turn things around. If this had been L, Light would have doubled check his plan and had a number of backups in case because at the end of the day Light respected L whereas he looked down on Near and considered him beneath his noticed. In a way that is poetic, L lost to Light because he respected him too much whereas Light lost to Near because he didn't respect him enough.

At this point L knows Light is Kira when he asked a simple yes or no question and light responded with a long philosophical answer. L knows he is about to die, he just needed confirmation that he was right

    • @bennitori4
      @bennitori4 Год назад +50

In the manga, nobody hears L's final thoughts. But the moment of confirmation was Light's reaction to L's death. In his last moments, Light was cradling L. And as his friend lay dying in his arms, what did Light do? He was smiling, very smuggly. And in the manga, as L sees this, his final thoughts were "I wasn't wrong." In a way, Light's cruelty towards L in his final seconds was exactly what L needed to die in peace. And it was only after seeing that smug smile that he closed his eyes and peacefully passed on without resistance. Knowing he was right was all L needed to be at peace.

  • @samuelkeller6097
    @samuelkeller6097 Год назад +126

One thing that makes this scene better is the fact that L doesn't frame it as, "have you been lying this whole time?" or some equivalent. Instead, he asks that, if over the course of Light's entire life, has he ever truly been honest with another person? It could even extend to being honest with himself. L is genuinely wrong footed that someone can be so delusional and egotistical that there hasn't been a second of that person's life where they critically looked inward and question themselves. Light is so quick to justify everything he ever does and never seems to admit fault. Even before he had the Death Note, he always had the potential to be just as monstrous if he took a single step out of line. L sees this and while he can't prove without doubt that Light is Kira, he is still astounded that there never was a true moment of transformation. Light was always Kira, from the moment he was born, lying to the world that he was just Soichiro Yagami's son.

This scene was probably the saddest scene in the whole series. L was an absolute genius. He knew he was about to die, and he knew he couldn't do anything about it, so he simply accepted it as his defeat. He was absolutely right about Light being Kira, but he never had the evidence to prove it or the support from the other task force members which is why he had no choice but to accept it, as he knew he couldn't do anything about it. The last scene when Light was dying, he sees L on the other side behind some gate or something, which signifies the way he accepts his defeat before his death. This whole series was an absolute masterpiece

It’s so interesting how L is so aware even when he “isn’t”. I think in that moment he not only knew his time was up, but he knew who was the reason for his demise, and could only completely accept that he was going to end and not that the person who he saw as a true and genuine equal for the first time in probably forever was the cause. I think it was this scene here where Kira had truly won, not when L had crumbled to the ground as his heart stopped. It’s also very interesting that L couldn’t hear Light until he got closer to him in the rain, or, in English, L’s loss only happened because he was looking for Light, the scholar he played tennis with, in Kira, a mass murderer with an unexplainable power. Notice how he smiled cupping his hands over his ear in the beginning of the scene and it dropped immediately after.

He acknowledges his concerns about himself and is willing to and happy to relate to and cooperate with others that he knows are actively opposing him or hating him like Kira and Aizawa. He's also fully understanding of his own humanity. This is seen in the different reactions between Light and L to shinigami being real in my opinion. Light acts as if this shinigami is nothing big to concern yourself with while L is appropriately freaking out at the introduction of such a supernatural element beyond his comprehension.

Both knew that and Light, as a psycho took advantage with that.
The feelings were the doom for L, probably because his own personal trauma as an orphan. With Near was different (with the crucial help of Melo) because for Near was not personal, only a puzzle to solve, so Light couldn’t play “the friend card” anymore.

The way L phrased that question would be a very simple answer for most people.
Of course there has been at least one time in most people's lives where they have told the simple truth.
But Light's inability to give a straight answer even here shows that his lying is pathological and affected him prior to the introduction of the death note.
of course L's question was more sarcastic than anything else. basically L is saying that he knows Light is lying and he knows that Light will continue to lie, never dropping the act 'til the bitter end.
Which is why L says, "I had a feeling you would say something like that."
Even so, perhaps L had a feeling deep down, that maybe, just maybe, Light would come clean to him for a brief moment in the rain where no audio equipment would be able to pick it up and where there would be no proof.
But of course that would never happen, L is somewhat defeated here, being quite confident he is correct about Light, but being unable to prove it definitively. meanwhile time is running out, and when it does, so too will his life.

@@thegr8seth442, maybe this is a silly answer, but I always figured L just figured it out because he's that smart. However, to bolster this thought, here's some additional clues:
First, as we already know, L was almost certain that Light was Kira, almost from the beginning. It was just a matter of proving it.
Second, after L's death, the guy telling Near and Mello (can't remember who it was) says that L never chose a successor, so both Near and Mello end up filling the space left by L. After Mello's death, Near surmises that L intentionally did not choose a sucessor because he knew that neither one by himself could defeat Kira, and that Near needed Mello's chaos and Mello needed Near's logic and intentionality.
Third, and this is one of my favorite scenes, immediately after Light's first interaction with Near, he thinks to himself that talking with Near was a familiar feeling. And the screen goes black, except for Light standing in the center, and it shows L running chains around Light. The idea I get from that shot is that L's death was exactly part of his plan, and even in death, L is outsmarting Light (i.e., L knew he couldn't defeat Light without dying, but in dying he orchestrated the events leading to Light's defeat).
A lot of people dislike the show after L's death because they see Near as an inferior imitation of L (and granted, some of the logic becomes a little more dubious), but personally, I see the second half of the show as a testament to just how smart L really was. Hence, L is one of my favorite characters in fiction.

L is convinced Light is Kira and knows Kira has to be close to killing him. L also has a way (the "test the rules in the book" maneuver) which will prove Light is Kira. At this point, both Light and L are a step or two away from defeating each other. L knew this, so he shows his hand and completely drops the facade they've maintained since meeting each other.
L was basically saying, "One way or another, the game ends soon Kira." And at 2:20, L and Kira finally meet face to face for just a moment. Then Kira puts his Light mask on again.
The bells don't necessarily have to be L's funeral bells, just the ones that will ring when their battle ends - since when it does, one of them will die.

Its nice that the creators of the show actually respect the viewers intelligence to read between the lines instead of "I know you're kira and I'm about to die." Like you can interpt this and the footwashing scene multiple ways from "lets just put in a shitty fan service moment" to L trying to tell Kira he knows who he is and he is about to lose so he proceeds to try to use biblical references with the footwashing to stroke kira's ego enough to actually think about the reference enough in hopes he will change his ways to L trying to figure out if they are both similar in the questions he asked but since it goes silent you could interpt it as L never getting a answer to his death, or multiple others interpetations. Like there is so many moments in a show where they just straight up ruin the moment by saying it point blank, there's a time and a place for it, but it also can ruin a lot of good moments if you just did something else.

Also, L is a massive troll. Always has been. Getting Light to walk out into the rain and get wet for absolutely no good reason is exactly the note L wanted to go out on.

      @@YouthRightsRadical Exactly!
He's a childish like Kira. Even if he was going out he wanted Light to *know* L *knew* he was Kira. That even if he couldn't get him caught he had "bloodied" his nose so to speak by getting him wet in the rain and nailed to the wall with The Truth.
In that moment, for just a few seconds, Kira knew what it felt like to be caught for his crimes and called out and Kira had nothing to say in his defense. He could only be silent and grateful that nobody else was there to see him embarrassed.
