      Ben Mendelson has a film (called Una) where he plays a sex offender (in the UK) (it also stars Riz Ahmed) and it's a very good film acting-wise. One of his, if not the best film he has played.

    Good video, just one disagreement. Luke was not a man with no money, respect or girl in the beginning. He has all of these things, as he is paid to do what he loves, gets respect from the adoring crowds for his feats, and is implied to have girls in every town, as he sees no need to keep in touch after he leaves a given girl/town. The fact that he has all these things makes his later sacrifice of them noble, as the need to be a responsible father to his newly discovered son outweighs the "good life" he has. He gives up the life that was all about himself, in exchange for a life that was all about his son.

      There are many subtle lines in this movie that allude to Luke’s past. In one moment he says something like “my dad wasn’t around and look at how I turned out.” Yet as soon as Luke finds out that he has a son, he drops everything and wants to be there for him. This movie brilliantly shows so many different relationships between fathers and sons. Luke didn’t have a close relationship with his father, but wants one with his son. Avery has a close relationship with his father, but he has no time for AJ and almost looks at his as a burden. Kofi isn’t even Jason’s real father yet he’s always been there for him. AJ even mocks him for having a black stepfather, yet their relationship is something AJ wishes he had. It’s really beautiful.

    I think you missed the point. Jason, the son, escaped "fate." He escaped to The Place Beyond the Pines. Notice how he rides through fields at the end. The rest of the movie takes place in a town surrounded by pine trees. And he literally left town. The other characters chose to stay, which meant their fate was determined.
    Unlike Ryan Gosling and Bradley cooper's character, Jason didn't allow his past actions or history to take hold of his identity. He forgave his dad's killer.
    Luke Cage held onto the past by trying to rob banks for his child. The cop who killed Luke never forgave himself for his mistakes either. Which made him rat out his fellow policemen.

    • @michaell9828
      @michaell9828 6 лет назад +56

      That's really interesting. I always took it that Jason was running away at the end, choosing a life on the road rather than facing his problems, and so dooming himself to follow in the footsteps of his father. But I can really see it the way you described with the point that he forgave his dad's killer and so escaped his fate.

    This movie is tremendous.
    Original and moving. I was a single child. I grew up not knowing my father. Was told he was no good and didn't want to see me, which was not true. I have 3 children of my own I struggle to see now and they're being told I'm no good and I don't want to see them. This film is one of the few that focus on the 2 father and son relationships and also the fate, destiny, history repeating themes. Sometimes you have to break the cycle, although not always obvious how to do it.

    The first time I saw this film I was 16 years old and I stayed up all night after watching thinking hard about what it means to be a man and a father. Mike Patton’s snow angel never fails to bring a tear to my eye, especially at the precise moments it’s used in the film. I watched it again last night and it touched me on another level. Luke reminds me so much of my brother. And to a lesser degree myself. Masculinity and the notion of duty, feeling like a failure and taking wild risks to escape that feeling of being a let down. Wanting to do so much more for yourself and those that mean the most to, but just not knowing how. I think there are millions of Handsome Lukes in this world and we can all be saved. Our pasts don’t have to define our futures and if you’re brave enough to confront your demons and change you can save yourself. This film truly touched my heart.

      I don’t know, making a whole movie out of just that would kill the whole point. It simply wasn’t about these people individually, and it wasn’t even necessarily about their intertwining lives. It’s just about how each person has a part in the whole. Separate movies would turn this from a movie that has immense potential for dialogue into a serious of above average dramas.

    Goslings character in this movie is soooo reminding of a person trying to get out of that situation of poverty, stigma etc. that he has been place in due to whatever time and circumstances got him there in the first place….and then later you see the pattern continue with his son.
    It’s extremely realistic to someone whose trying to make better of himself/situation but making bad choices to do it, like you said

    I think what I liked most about this movie was how it kept me on my toes about where it was headed. After Luke died I wondered what was going to happen next and decided to just experience the scenes as they were taking place. At the end, it seemed like Luke just reincarnated as his son Jason. However, it did feel weird when Jason was so hung up about his dead father when Kofi was there since birth. I guess it could be a movie about generational trauma and trying to break a cycle to move to a “place beyond the pines”

    • @flightofthebumblebee9529
      @flightofthebumblebee9529 Год назад +2

      We see that Kofi loved Jason and Jason loved Kofi. Kofi keeps it 150% real with Jason about his biological father, even while buying him ice cream (which is what his real father did for him as a baby).
      Kofi was the type of man that Luke should have turned into if he was serious about being a father. He has skills as a mechanic and could've found other honest work but he got addicted to the adrenaline of bank robbing and died as a result. Avery was justified in shooting him but it didn't need to be done since Luke was surrendering (but he had a gun in his hand when Avery broke into the room and even shot Avery after Avery shot him). Tragic, but justified.
      Kofi didn't bad mouth Luke to Jason, and simply told him the truth that he was "just a guy with a baby". Luke even violently assaulted Kofi for making him leave his home. Kofi took care of his wife, her mother, and her son. That's a real man.
      I'm glad the film didn't really even have an antagonist because it didn't really need one. Ray Liotta and the corrupt cops were the closest thing to an antagonist.

      I guess you never watch ancestry shows because most people what to know who their father. I know for a fact I would have want to know. Jason asks his mom if she loved him at all or hated him. I have a cousin whose father worked for my grandfather and he wasn't showing up for work so they went to the address he gave and he had a wife, 3 children and she was pregnant and they were in a small house with one window. The mother ended up giving the baby to my grandparents and then my aunt and uncle adopted her. Her dad would on occasion try to contact them. My uncle never wanted her to know even her mother, but as soon as he died she contacted her mother. We all saw where her dad had died years before, alone in the VA hospital with no family listed. Here is where it gets spooky, my cousin's oldest son was very much like her birth father and had lots of problems. He is better now, but he never knew his grandfather, but was almost identical in his behavior.

    I saw this on Netflix randomly one day and it instantly was in top10 movies for me. I kinda liked how no one knows about it in a very hipster way. Makes it feel like you and the movie have a secret lmao know what I mean?

    Being a pagan and witch the themes of fate and destiny come up alot throughout the religion but If there's one thing I've learned is that the only way that you can change your fate is to change yourself. That's why I believe that luke's son survived at the end. I belived that his original intent was to carry out the death of Cross but in that very moment, luke's son changed the winds of fate by changeing something within himself...he let cross live. This movie has some POWERFUL meanings behind it and it's a marvel to watch such raw emotion well done!

    This may be a wee detail but I think it's important. The reason why Avery feels guilt initially is that he shot first, not only has he killed some one but he did not follow proper police protocol.

    did anyone notice that after the crooked cops and avery take the money from jason’s mom that they’re listening to hall and oates in the car, which is what avery called Mendelson’s character and himself earlier?

    I think Avery is guilty because he knows he shot before even looking at the situation and Luke's gun went off as he was falling out the window. He hit Kofi because Koft would let him put the crib together. While I think Rob was trying to help Luke, he destroyed the only piece of property he owned and the only thing he identified with or that he was famous for. Why not let him give his son a crib? Koft asks, if is okay for the baby's father to even be in the house.

    Within the first two minutes you are wrong, he gave her a chance to explain herself when she showed up, she showed up for a purpose. Obviously knowing she's pregnant but wanted to be chased. This doesn't take away from his "average persona" but it instills realism into our world when dealing with such women. As lower class people would admit too. Which gives the movie such power. I will further edit, if needed. No further edit needed, good man.

    Watched a few nights ago 11/2020. Left me a hot mess. I felt my chest tighten so many times during the movie & holding the tears. I couldn’t stop thinking of the characters! Especially Luke! I drove by a bank the next day & thought of him! Of course Jason as well especially at the end & way he drove off on the motorcycle to the “west.” What will be his destiny there? I couldn’t help but think he’s go to have the same path & trouble w/the law especially how his dad was shot by a cop & how Robin lied to him saying the cops chopped up his dad’s bike... right when Jason was introduced as teen I saw the similarities to Luke... There’s so much I could say on this movie. A part of me wants to warn ppl and say no don’t do it, it will mess you up! But another part of me wants them to watch it because it is an amazing movie. It’s been several days since I saw it and I literally started doing internet searches about the movie! I’ve never done that over a fictional characters in a movie! That’s how much Luke stayed in my mind. I wished so much for him. Once he knew he had a baby, he was a true man about it his responsibilities, showed a good heart, good intentions, he just went about it all wrong but he didn’t have much of a good influence. He tells Ro he didn’t have a dad & look how he turned out. Alright I’m done. This movie has me undone lol. Excellent job by Ryan Gosling!!!

      Blue Valentine broke my heart even more than this one did. Especially if you ever had to bury a beloved dog, and especially if you ever helped raise kids that weren't yours and then got dumped by their mom.
