I watched this last night and was completely underwhelmed. The comic timing was off, Gosling made a herculean effort but still wasn't funny. I actually thought Crowe was naturally funnier, as was the little girl. Gosling just doesn't have the knack. Oh, and btw, there was no such thing as "voicemail' in the 1970s you ignorant zoomer.

They really did. The entire film is one big stream of well-timed humor. Not to mention some self-aware jokes like how March realizes he's weirdly unstoppable. Despite his ineptitude, despite his constantly failings and injuries, he always seems to pull through. Like an idiot savant at solving cases. And he's very fun to watch, because you're constantly sighing at his stupidity, but because of it, he's oddly endearing, too. Not just because he has a daughter, either.
And Healy, despite being a thug for hire, is surprisingly likeable too. Even though the two characters are at odds the first time they meet, Healy outright breaking March's arm, you find it hard to dislike Healy and part of that is also because he gets along well with March's daughter, showing his softer side.
The best kind of buddy films (I'd say "buddy cop" films, but obviously these two are not cops, though it's usually cops) have the two characters conflict with one another, I won't deny that, but what I like about Nice Guys is that they're not constantly on each other's case. They're not shitting on each other from start to finish, they actually build up a neat rapport after a short while of working together and while they make witty, snarky remarks (usually Healy) at each other, they still seem to work together pretty well and aren't screaming in each other's faces in an overly dramatic fashion. The movie is lighthearted even when it's not and I like that. Way more enjoyable to watch.
      Maybe that's just me, though.

The more the movie made me laugh, the more the mystery had me intrigued, the more a kind of melancholy started to come over me. It honestly broke my heart to see such an incredibly well-crafted masterpiece get so little recognition. I think the reason it underperformed is that the trailer made it look like a broad comedy in the vein of the Starsky and Hutch remake. It sort of looked like a movie you could pass. But this movie is actually a work of art. I was not only shocked at how hilarious both Crowe and Gosling were (playing against type as charming leading men), but how much of a WTF movie this was. It's like the Big Sleep, where the actual plot isn't as important in the end. This is a new favorite that I hope will eventually find its audience, the way Big Lebowski did, years after its underwhelming theatrical release.

I did see this in theaters with my grandmother no less! We loved it! I knew this would be good given Shane Black and it looked to me like the kind of movie Hollywood stopped making over 20 years ago that I was glad to see return. Of course why this movie bombed is two simple words, "competition" and "familiarity." People don't pay money to go see a movie soloy because it "looks interesting." They want something they are familiar with to connect to. So all the familiar stuff climbs ahead of the pack (especial when people have a good movie to compare to in the past ie. comic book movies in our recent past) and all the unknown stuff gets swept under the rug. Even I will admit, if Shane Black wasn't attached to this as a writer director and it was some nobody, I'd think twice about seeing it. No one wants to waste their time and money on a move they just can't seem to get invested in. But since I know who Shane Black is and much of the general public don't this movie didn't get the attention it deserves. I also don't recall any of the trailers advertising with Shane Black's name so that may have been HUGE over sight by the marketing of this movie.

As the narrator does not define the term "wit", the whole video is very subjective. Its not like the narrator defines the elements of wit and then compare this movie to the Avengers or Pulp Fiction. Another perfect example of whit done right which is also every bit, or maybe even more, underrated than "The Nice Guys" - is, "Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang," staring Downey Jr and Val Kilmer, (with the latter being absolutely brilliant in it). Downey Jr was great in it s well, prolly my favorite movie with him in it outside of "Zodiac." In this movie his character was not only the first time, or at least one of them, where he played the sort of quintessential Robert Downey Jr character that he's been type-casted for playing from that point froward, (from Stark to Sherlock and beyond), it's also imo te best version.

      @waveshock 2 года назад

Well, it's also from Shane Black, who would direct Downey Jr. again in Iron Man 3.

Really good Video Essay man. One on the Shane Black penned and Tony Scott helmed 90s L.A. Noir-thriller The Last Boy Scout would be rather a good companion piece to this. Plenty of similarities and Boy Scout was released to shrugs and indifference i think. I think it now stands as a wonderful early 90s time capsule, Scott`s visuals are as good as ever and it is easily one of Willis`s best films(which i know isn`t hard these days, but it was filmed when the first two Die Hard pics had made him one of the biggest stars on the planet)

It's an absolute crime this movie made no money. There are so many great movies that get terrible, cash grabbing sequels that no one but the studio wanted, and yet here we have a movie that EVERYONE involved wanted to make a sequel for and yet will never make happen.

MilkBrain because the general public is fairly stupid and don't really understand the dozens of layers present in movies with deeper plot- directions. On the other hand, Transformers of Fast and Furious are huge successes, despite the fact that these movies are totally stupid

Don't put them two together fatf knows what it is dumb fun you turn your brain off and just have a good stupid time but transformers is just action action action with no sense of dumbness it is dumb but it takes itself too seriously and makes its laughable in a bad way

HONEST OPINION: I thought their chemistry was good BUT I just found the story boring. Yeah the dialogue was good but I started to doze off and fall asleep at the end.
Yeah there’s funny dialogue and funny scenes. But I felt that’s the only good thing about the movie (IMO). Sometimes it felt like it was just trying to make it funny in every scene rather than try to develop a stronger movie

Not to be pedantic, but Crowe's character was not a detective, he was an "enforcer." He even has narration where he says he thinks he may want to become a private detective, because then he could do some good. Gosling's character was a P.I. and former police officer.

Dude, your video is awesome, but you didn't even mention the character of Holly ? She's the special effect of the movie, and not only thanks to Angourie Rice ! She's just phenomenal ! "Dad, there's whores here and stuff" is one of the best lines of the century ! :D
It's the best of the movie next to "fucking Chet" !

The problem was the kid. Having a child at risk, having a kid be shown porn, and having a kid with an alcoholic father... all of it makes the scenes less funny and more uncomfortable.

The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang seem to be some of the most overlooked films, both have great stories and without humour would still be solid films. But Black's dialogue is like no others, and I've seen both so many times and they still crack me up.
