The new Film Radar video essay covers Edgar Wright's "Baby Driver" and how it uses colors and costuming to establish and develop characters. In his own words Wright likes to "color code" his characters to help differentiate between them on screen, but it also makes for an excellent opportunity to inform the audience about the characters in a more subdued way than through boring exposition.

I want to point out that most scenes where it involved debra and baby is a lot saturated, making the moment more lively and expressive. I just find that really sweet. It tells me how much baby feels lively around debra.
The laundromat scene is the perfect example of that too 💙❤💛
I like how baby always wears with sunglasses when doing a job but they’re broken by the end of the film, forcing him to see the crimes and violence around him. The glasses are my favorite part of his costume design.

it's actually kind of funny how well both Baby Driver and most works by Shakespeare fit in the art period of the english renaissance - both discuss the complex principles of humanism.
Everyone's saying "amazing editing," but I just wanted to take a second to acknowledge the incredible decision to use Baby's shades @1:20 to contrast the light and dark duality of Baby's existence.
It's amazing bc you're literally using his ever-present sunglasses as the two opposing lenses through which he views the world. It's only punctuated by the deliberate inclusion of clips like @7:52, where one lens of the sunglasses has been removed, literally embodying the shift from his time in the darkness to his future in the light. 10/10 great job

You could also interpret that lense breaking in that scene as him truly seeing things as they are to the point where he makes important decisions based on his newly clarified view of the world
He also doesn't wear sunglasses for the rest of the movie I believe. Meaning he's not hiding from things anymore and he can literally see clearly
Great point. Mabey that's why Doc protected him. His dark shades also mirror things from the outside so It's a visual metaphor for how perhaps Doc see's himself in Baby or at least see's a reflection of himself(quite literally lmao) so he empathises and wants to protect that innocence. when one lense is shattered in the shopping mall chase scene it shows not only does he have a newer clarified view of the world (as another commented on this thread suggests) and see how dangerous his situation is, but also his loss of innocence in the crime world.
As a nerdy film student, it was super refreshing to see a video essay dealing with costume design in a movie! It's such an important aspect that people gloss over so frequently when critiquing and analyzing movies. Like, I could practically write a book about the costume design for a movie like Pacific Rim (And I mean, down to the length of characters' pants. I'm not even joking - Newt's jeans are cuffed because they're too long, while Hermann's pants are clearly a few inches too short, in order to emphasize that they are opposites.)
I'd love to see more videos like this. It's something that is so crucial but gets so easily lost in a visual medium, particularly one that is so dominated by CGI nowadays. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Costume design is an elegant art, that can really make a huge difference for a film. Currently I have no plans of covering the costume design of another film, but I'm sure it's something I'll come back to at some point, I like to jump around on subjects between videos though to keep things fresh, but there's definitely plenty of other videos deserving of their own video like this.
No doubt the most under-discussed part of film is the visuals in general, it's a movie but there's so little talk about what makes it a movie.
Baby Driver deserves at least a couple of nominations

Film Radar Baby and Deborah both wear black and white like prisoners because they are both trapped. Baby is trapped in criminal activity. Deborah in the conventional slum of adulthood responsibilities.

Saw this because Edgar Wright himself shared it on twitter! Loved the video and am a big fan of the movie myself. My girlfriend loves it the most of all of Wright's movies because she absolutely loved the thrilling ride, myself I think I would put shawn of the dead as my favourite, though I have not seen at world's end in years, so I might be in for a surprise when rewatching that one.
I'm still in shock that that actually happened, he's one of my favorite filmmakers of all time, hasn't made a bad film yet! The World's End really grew on me the more I watched it, after a first viewing I was disappointed, I didn't like it nearly as much as I had liked Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, but it gets better every time I see it, it's a really lovely film.

Hot Fuzz is the pinnacle of his achievement, but Baby Driver is also brilliant. Hot Fuzz gets points automatically just for being SO jam-packed with references, call-backs, and punchlines.

Baby driver was my favorite movie this year. Everyone was so good but it also made realize how good of an actor Jamie foxx is.
Also John Hamm is really hot.

One thing I noticed about the costume: the outfit @ 7:55 is a nod to mike wazowski in monsters university with the blue cap and one eye ball.

I think Baby is dressed in a way similar to Han Solo as Han is known as a scoundrel, smuggler or aka criminal, but when he's needed he can do the right thing, like in Empire in the Hoth base when Imperial attacked. Also a little reference to the Taoist/Buddhist philosophy of "The Yin and Yang".
As you had said, Edgar Wright is a master in subtlety and details. Too bad he didn't managed to direct a Marvel film, hope Marvel would allow him to do at least one of the films...
It's entirely possible! Funny enough Ansel was one of the contenders for the role of young Han in the new SW movie.
He almost did Ant-Man but left over creative differences, they really don't seem open to letting talented people do their own thing within the cinematic universe, which is a shame, I think an Edgar Wright superhero movie would be incredible.
Solid point. Maybe there's also a relatively simple yet blatant statement of white under, black over. Exactly what was said in the video, Baby's core becomes darker and we see that through his t-shirt. However, towards the end he's not wearing that black waistcoat much I believe. Perhaps that was his visage, his criminal character

One example i LOVE - I loved how Jon Hamm goes from dark neutral lighting to Red once his gf dies, (which echoes back her words - when he gets mad he sees only red). The moment she dies he’s leaned beside a broken red taillight as in it’s breaking out, and then through the movie he’s usually highlighted in red to show his rage and “Seeing Red” towards baby.. i thought that was brilliant.
While your analysis here is incredible and really opened my eyes up to the stylistic choices that were made, I have to compliment your editing especially. This video is so well put together and it made your points very easy to follow. You have some serious skill in both analysis and editing!

Amazing analysis, the more you point it out the more meaningful it seems! I found it interesting that Darling is mostly colored in purple, a color usually associated with royalty and wealth. At the beginning of the film she's dressed in a pastel purple fur so you really get the feeling that she's something to be charished, someone worthy of Buddy giving up everything and doing the whole Bonnie & Clyde thing for, she is pretty nice to Baby and is fairly likable until Bats grounds them in reality. After it's revealed that she's just a stripper he ran away with she switches to a darker plum purple that she's eventually killed in. It kinda feels like Buddy's subsequent spiral resulted from him resisting the fact that he made the wrong decision after his crimes caught up with him the first time. I kinda wish the female characters in this movie had more depth in general but I still think it's an interesting analysis.
Costume design is extremely important within film language. Costume is connected to character, some of the best iconography of a film is often costuming. Even identical uniform costumes are important, sometimes iconic (think of the Storm troopers from Star Wars). I really enjoy your focus on the intricate various aspects of film, keep up the amazing work. I always look forward to your essays. :-)

I love movie break-downs like this, I pick up on a lot of foreshadowing and characterizations in shows, but these kinds of videos just get into the plot deeper and pick out the symbols that the film creators use. Really cool video, I enjoyed it!

Oh man, you're in for a treat when you watch his other movies, they're just as awesomely made and entertaining. There's a lot going for it, it has a superb script, great performances, a kickass soundtrack and some of the best car chases of the last decade, but yeah, the costume design goes a long way for making the film better. Glad you liked the video buddy :)
I finally saw Baby Driver yesterday and man it was disappointing. I was waiting for the record to scratch and the Edgar Wright genius to burst through and reveal itself but it never happened. It was just cliched scene after cliched scene that in the end amounted to nothing unique or interesting in any way. Sure it was made better than all the films its the same as, but it's still no where near as creative as Wright's previous films, so even stylistically it under performs.
Hott Fuzz, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim all tie for my favorite Wright movie while World's End and Suan of the Dead closely follow.
Honestly, I'd say to watch it a few times. There are definitely cliched aspects, but I'm not sure why that has to be a bad thing. Every film these days is treading water that's been tread before. There's no new ground to break in traditional visual storytelling, so we're going to see certain tropes arise. But every beat of the film is driven by the soundtrack, it plays out almost like a musical but with kickass rock music. The car chases were all done for real, with even the real actors inside the car. There are details hidden throughout, and just tons of great use of symbolism and humor and man I just love this film. Granted, rewatching it might not change your opinion, but I'd say it's worth a try before solidifying your opinion.

I think my favorite use of color/costuming in Baby Driver was during the dinner date scene, where Deborah was the only one not dressed in black, symbolizing how she's the most important part of Baby's life. Not only that, she's dressed in yellow, the color that tints Baby's flashbacks, representing his association between Deborah and his mother. Genius stuff
Yup! Yellow is the bridge between those worlds, the connection to his past with his mother, which is why they're also both blonde. Good eye my friend!

Also worth pointing out that the color coding within the heist crew also indicates team unity. In the first heist, the crew works very well together, and they all wore similarly dark clothes. Contrasting that to the final heist, in which you have almost the exact same cast but the dynamic is very different, the colors don't match nearly as well.

Could not agree with you more! It wasn't until my second year studying film that I learnt the importance of production design/costumes in a film. Your video perfectly encapsulates whats it's all about, it goes largely unnoticed but subconsciously will create feelings and connections that other wise would not be as strong.

I also really liked the use of colour to communicate Baby's situation, particularly red and blue.
When red shows up, things are going well for Baby and he's in control (like the Subaru at at the start of the film, a graffiti heart on the wall in the coffee shop scene changes from grey to red when Debora walks past and the red clothes/record in the laundromat scene) but when Blue shows up, something's going wrong (like the blue police lights, particularly Buddy's police car as well as the blue truck belonging to the 'hero' bystander in the second heist and the two blue cars that Baby uses in the third heist which goes balls up).
Shane Fell also the clothes he grabs at the mall when he’s trying to hide are a blue jean jacket and a very blue hat
I must say as a costume designer myself this world means the world to me. It's awesome to see people appreciating such an underappreciated aspect of film.

Edgar Wright is straight up a genius. Baby Driver has been my favourite movie for 3 years now and i have made my family and i rewatch this movie dozens of times. Somehow, we still are finding more and more details and looking at this movie in many different ways each time. it's insane how different my perspective of this movie has changed since the first time i watched it. i hope edgar, and other directors come out with more movies like Baby Driver.
Great discussion (as always!) I may have misinterpreted what you were saying around 4 minutes into the video about Baby holding onto the past. Were you suggesting that the reason he becomes involved with Debora is a longing for his mother? If so-SUPER interesting point I never even thought of!
Indeed I was! Also hinted at by the blonde hair, and that the first time he ever sees Debora she's singing. I didn't go fully into that because I thought it strayed from my point, but I definitely think he was missing a caring feminine figure in his life, and she represents a lot of what he misses about his mom(at least that's my interpretation).
I never thought about it like that, but now that you point it out-it makes a ton of sense. Now I feel like I'm obliged to watch it again!

I have a thought on that.
Somewhere near the middle of the film, we learn that Darling and Buddy were "normal" folk who led relatively innocent lives (the diner scene where Bats tries to guess their lives). They then started committing small crimes to pay off debts. But, one day when their luck ran out they had to choose between a life of crime (aka a life on the run) or doing time in prison. This B&D couple (Buddy and Darling) chose to run.
On the other hand, another B&D couple in the movie faced with nearly the exact same choice at the film's end chose to step on the brakes instead of a life constantly on the run. I think they're both meant to show that everyone always has a choice in the life they want to lead.

@@108titan I know this was a year ago but they weren't innocent. Buddy works in wallstreet and had a family but took it all for granted and ran off with Darling his "favorite lapdancer" then led a life of crime.

It’s this video and baby driver itself that taught me about this element of characteristics keep being awesome dude
"because when my buddy sees red..." (darling/monica to baby), refers to the final scene, in which, buddy literally sees red, and inside of the laundromat where debrah and baby are listening to a song, the laundry is the three primary colors, Red, Yellow and Blue.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE VERY MUCH I’m not really sure why but it’s just really beautifully made. But this analysis of the movie made me even more in love with it!!!!

Honestly, I just didn't care for my analysis of their outfits nearly as much, and I felt it would have hampered the video. I dug into it looking for deeper insight, but all of the best stuff that I found was more centered around Baby and Deborah, and I wanted to keep in only the best of the best. Baby Driver is the only movie that makes me WANT to go to theaters. The initial car chase had him changing gears and with each change the bass from the theater made my HEART VIBRATE. It literally was the most surreal, most amazing experience I have ever had from a movie. That moment set the tone for the film and I WISH more films would take advantage of the theater setting.

Great video! I'm so glad Wright made this movie, I think Baby Driver is his most widely accessible movie so far. His work is always so masterful, but always focuses on such a niche genre-mesh or style. The fact he made a shoot-em-up action movie in a time where the genre is so oversaturated, but created a story with heart, different perspectives and characters, and all of his signature wit and style, is really exciting. Hopefully the success of Baby Driver will bring more attention to his other films because he is so damn good at his craft, but it seems like not enough people know it.
He's one of those names that gets thrown around a lot within the right circles, but he's definitely no household name, and he absolutely should be.
Baby also is dressed like Han Solo.

Like chemistry, character development and a sense of true understanding?
For me, their romance is what made the movie fall apart. I just didn’t buy it. The writing didn’t support their relationship much at all, beyond him loving the idea of her. Which would’ve been fine if that was intentional. But the moment she decides to give up her normal life to join his life on the run, I just felt confused. It was so unearned, it felt like they barely even knew anything about each other. I knew barely anything about her, much less anything that would help her making that decision make sense. In my opinion, the relationship between him and his deaf father-figure should’ve been the emotional heart of the film, but instead it’s this love story that wound up feeling hollow. It took me out of it completely. This film is technically brilliant, but it’s storytelling is lacking real weight. The visuals and the editing were great, but they weren’t enough to replace essential character-building.
I meant things like a cliche montage, or some lengthy sex scene, or many of the other overplayed scenes that build a film romance. Personally, I totally bought it, they're both young and seeking change. Love doesn't always follow the rules of logic, have you never been in a situation where you barely know someone and there's just this indescribable feeling you have for them? I think it's fair to say neither had ever met anyone like each other before, and they each had a quality that drew them to the other, I personally more than bought it, I loved it. I mean, his relationship with Joe is a fairly significant part of the film, and a great emotional core of the film, just not the only one.
Though it's worth mentioning that you're not alone with those complaints, I've seen a lot of people say things that are similar to what you've said, and that's totally fine, not everyone is ever going to like any movie. There are always going to be people going "What the hell guys, it's not THAT good." And that's just the way it is.
I'm not sure if you've seen any of Edgar's other films, but they - like Baby Driver - often have this feeling to them that their world is a little bit fantastical, a little bit ridiculous. This allows some of the more far fetched things that take place to not be so jarring. Early on the movie leads you in with an understanding that you will have to suspend your beliefs a bit with that perfectly choreographed car chase. So in that sense, I think the romance fits into the reality of that world well enough. Though, I can see how that wouldn't be for everyone.
Carlos J Having seen the entire Cornetto trilogy, the essential relationships in all of those movies feel completely fleshed out and earned. The story could become outlandish, the stakes could skyrocket to a galactic level, but the reason those films are great is because the core of each story has well-developed, fleshed out characters with relationships that feel real and that you care about. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost inhabited completely different characters with completely different friendships in every film, and every one of them felt real and lived in. This movie was more grounded, frankly, and where the Cornetto trilogy provided great character building when it had high concepts it could’ve rested on, Baby Driver had a serviceable enough premise with no tangible character build-up to speak of. Considering the amount of time we get to invest in them, the character choices and plot-progression felt mechanical. Which is the last thing a movie built around music should’ve made me feel.
I went into the movie hoping to love it. I just couldn’t, sadly. Edgar Wright is a fantastic director, but I’m starting to think Simon Pegg was a huge asset in the writing process. I didn’t feel a heart in this movie. I just heard it beating. Like it was trying to convince me to feel something instead of making me. I could see the sincerity in its attempt at romanticism, but it wasn’t actually there. If this were a film in the Cornetto trilogy, we would’ve had a scene where we see the main lead and the love interest alone in private, being mostly honest with each other about their lives and just enjoying each other’s company in a way that makes it clear that this is the first emotional connection either of them have really had, and the main character’s adoptive father would’ve been actually threatened instead of it being a fake-out and that would’ve been part of the emotional climax. That’s not what happened though. The film took half-measures when it could’ve given gut punches that would’ve made the final moments feel satisfying.
I can completely see where you're coming from. I think what it boils down to is how open someone is to the idea of such a highly romanticized idea of love which of course asks a lot of the viewer. And I suppose when it comes to movie relationships, I see most of them as a bit unrealistic so I let anything slide haha. As someone who watches a lot of animated shows and films, use of color as a thematic tool is often used so there was as sense of familiarity regarding that element, as well as some aspects of the storytelling. I felt the individual characters were very strong - it reminded me of reading a comic book, I suppose, and there are a lot of shoehorned relationships in those that I've grown accustom to over the years. But thanks for your perspective, I definitely can agree with you to a point.

Don't get me wrong I like Hot Fuzz, but for me it's easily Wrights weakest don't get why it so much love above Shaun of the dead, Scott Pilgrim or Baby Driver, which are all way better in my humble opinion
Steve Porter Baby driver is a great movie for many reasons for example it has everything you want in a movie. Great music, amazing actors, great action and driving, romance, humor, serious scenes, intense scenes, surprising death scenes, memorable dialogue and much more..
Everyone has a film of his they'd put lowest on the ladder that others would rank the highest, I think that's a good sign of a talented filmmaker. I love all of his films, it just happens to be my personal number one.
It really does have it all, one of the best of the year for sure.
