- It's been a while. (In the voice of Aaron Lewis from Staind) How are ya? Today I'm dong something a little different than the normal stuff I do. In the past few years I've grown to love and appreciate movies a lot more than I use to. I've also been in love with fashion since 2012. So todays video is an amalgamation of the two. I'm talking about the costume designs from the movie The Place Beyond The Pines. We're going to take a deep dive into Luke Glanton's (Ryan Gosling) wardrobe in the movie. Sorry I just seen this. A year later. He and I are from the same town, I have a XR400R (not a DRZ) but the guy started his own subculture and made it out of this cold place, guy will be missed for sure

Anyone who rates this movie as much as I do instantly gets my respect. So many overlook this movie and don't get it, or get pissed about the initial big storyline. Good job, you could perhaps do 'Drive' next, if you haven't done so already.
I agree. A lot of people didn't like Luke's early death in the film but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I don't see that as a valid criticism of the movie either. The storytelling continued very well and the 'moral' of the film was laid out and fulfilled.
Drive is DEFINITELY on the list but I want it to be perfect so I’ve been holding that in the back burner

I’ve never watched a costume design video on RUclips before but I’m absolutely enjoying this! I love Ryan gosling and always thought he looked so cool in this movie, drive, blue valentine, and blade runner. So it’s nice to hear someone else’s intake on it. I’ve learned so many fashion terms cause of this! Especially how you do research. I’m gonna go read that article🏃🏻♀️

A white shirt with a red jacket was in Rebel without a cause. After this film, it became a kind of protest symbol. Might be a reference
Oh wow that correlation never even crossed my mind but I could see how that might have something to do with why they added the red jacket. In the movie he even gets upset with romina for talking down to him
Dude this video was awesome! Would love to see more videos like this! One of my all time favourite movies is Good Will Hunting and I think that would be a great movie to do a breakdown of the costume design

I ordered a pair of custom Justin Raybans off their website because of this movie. I would note the green is not quite the neon green in the movie but the green translucent and depending on the lighting the seem a little more/less green, a little more/less translucent. Anyways Ryan Gosling is a King and can do no wrong.
I have so many shirts that match the drape of his oversized white one. Couldn’t have said it better, he’s the goat!
The red leather jacket reminds me of the one Brad Pitt wears in Fight Club as Tyler Durden. If you haven't already maybe you should make a video on Fight Club

12:07 the t shirt all the way to the left with the red pentagram is the backside of a band shirt of the Norwegian black metal band Emperor. I wore this t shirt in high school in the 90's but it did not say fear of God on the back. The shirt is titled "rider" and is from Emperor's album Emperor. I was surprised to see that shirt in this video and did not know a company like this had pressing rights.

I was wondering how all these shirts can be different but look so good on him at the same time until you mentioned drape of the shirts, what is the best way to identify t shirts by the drape I'm looking for? any measurements or visual cues I can use to identify as I have sloping traps and developed shoulders, I like the look he has in these especially the Metallica tank
Sorry I'm getting back to you so late! Drape is definitely important when thinking about getting t-shirts like his. It's hard to see visual cues unless it's on a model or a mannequin. If it's on a mannequin/person you want to look for a lot of folds in the fabric. Best way though is to know the measurements that will fit you best. If you want the Metallica tank, something like getting a shoulder measurement on the shirt would help a lot and maybe the pit to pit measurement too, you want them to be oversized enough but you don't want to be swimming in the garment. Your best bet is to find the shirt that you have that you think is the best fit for you and measure the shoulder and pit to pit. Also one last thing, look for description words like "lightweight fabric". You don't want a fabric that's super heavy because it won't be as "flowy" as the ones that Ryan wears. I hope this helps!
I don’t think it has to do with just the drape. Ryan was in awesome shape in this movie and that contributes more to the look than the drape.

I actually on the top part of the leather pants. it’s from Honda moto jacket.
I found out what the boots are. They are not Corcoran. If you want them you are going to be looking for the Canadian forces garrison boot from the 80s/90s
The way I was finally able to verify was actually the shape of the leather strip that runs up the back of the heel. You can see some shots of it in the movie and from pictures of the costume on display. The strip gets wider as it moves towards the heal but then quickly tapers back in as it contacts the heel stitching pattern below it. The sole tread is also an exact match. The boots run big just fyi. I sided down a size and a half from my street shoe and they fit fine.

My favourite piece is the ride the lightning t-shirt, because I have one that I used to wear a lot in high school and is very washed out, I stole wearing it because I got into fashion and all the don't wear graphic tees just plain white t-shirt, then I watched this movie and i started wearing it again just because this movie

Whats your thoughts on Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet? These two movies have the best fashion aesthetic in my opinion.
Oh man Baz's Romeo and Juliet is so awesome. I haven't seen the full movie but the wardrobe department did such an amazing job. I think it was pleasures that copied Leo's shirt this past year. I feel like theres a decent amount of brands that've taken inspiration from it. I'll get to it one day!
For me the red jacket really reminded me of karate kid villain Johnny Lawrence his cobra Kai jacket that he wears in the beginning of the movie

To anyone looking to get the Metallica tee, be careful as there are a lot of fakes/altered products on the internet. The best way to tell is the coloration of the 'Metallica' logo in the centre. If it's genuine (like in the movie) it should be dark steel grey with a bold white outline.
Yea there are fakes EVERYWHERE of this shirt. Super annoying

Well my girlfriend does tattoos and she always says that most movies never do them correctly. But personally I liked his tattoos
@@Daniel_Verhey Here is my projection on his tattoos. His biggest tattoo is an old ship which indicates he is a US Navy veteran. It's an old wooden sailboat which means he's an old salt or old soul, a true sailor, like me. The top hat "Magic Man" tatt indicates he's charming like a magician. The boxing tatt, he was the best boxer in Navy/Marines bootcamp, like me. Gentleman cat, that's his power animal like Tyson and McGreggor. Cat with with an eye patch means he's a freemason or freemasons have-an-eye on him, like me and the rest of his tatts. Frankenstein means he's broken into many pieces and he has a monsterous side. skull with a crown means he experienced ego death, his ego death depth is at royal level. Grenade means he experienced a grenade situation in bootcamp, like I did. bloody dagger on the corner of his eye, he's all cried-out and DGAF anymore. sword and snake symbol, he likes drugs. Rose, is his softside like so many young men wearing flowery aloha shirts these days. But one thing they got wrong was the switch blade, because in the very beginning, he was playing with a butterfly knife, not a switch blade, which he stabs on a cupboard door with a military sticker. Just my own projections. Many other little tatts on him..

People actually would and still do wear their shirts inside out that don’t have a lot of clothes and or means to wash them. If you wear a shirt normal one day and then inside out the next day it would be hard to tell it was the same shirt. Also if it had stains on the outside wearing it inside out would hide them. It’s just something to note with the gypsy character he’s playing and probably why they did it. Not necessarily for a specific style but the character he played not having many clothes or means to wash them much.

Unfortunately, it was most likely a vintage piece so the brand name isn’t talked about from what I found.

I’m not the best person to ask, I’ve been looking and haven’t found any luck. Best bet is eBay though
Ebay or Etsy. One will go for 150 some are 300. If you want the same exact version that ryan wears, pay attention to how the Vent zippers run along the jacket. Youll find some authentic hein gericke jackets that look like it but run a perfect line all the way up the jacket until it touches the shoulders.The older “model/version” that Ryan wears, the zippers (on the front) start from underneath the armpit then bends/arches all way down to the waistband centered between the actual zipper that zips up the jacket and the side of the jacket itself. I suck at explaining things. Idk if they come in mens. Ive only found womens but their medium fits me. 5’11 man abt 150 lbs.
Never thought of Etsy, that’s a good idea. Yea I always have look back and forth at the sellers jacket and the pictures from the movie to figure out if I’m looking at the right jacket or not. Lucky that you have one! Is it slim fitting on you or somewhat roomy?
@@Daniel_Verhey its roomy if you take out the biker liner (its buttoned inside.) And its comfortably snug when left in. Just watch out for the fakes. Theyre easy to spot though.

Hey man, just wanted to see if anyone knew what style the jeans he wears are. Are they like slim fit, loose fit that kinda thing?
I’d say the white jeans are a straight to a slim straight. More importantly though, I find that it all depends on what your legs are like. If you have really skinny legs than a pair of straight jeans might end up looking really baggy but if you have really thick legs, straight might look skinny. But I’d start out in the range of a slim straight to a straight. Hope this helps!

@@Daniel_Verhey His jeans isn't really dirty, it's bleached from gray to white and still have some gray arrears, especially in the seam-areas. I found a sharp photo where you can see it clearly. Really hard to find something like that.

The Metallica piece is super nice, one of my favorite tee's in the movie but overall I think the Hein Gerricke pants are the best for me.

The red leather jacket is very Michael Jackson Thriller or Eddie Murphy Delirious special. Now those are both late 80's but given the fit is worn to shit in the movie it could be something he's had for years.
I think that’s exactly what Erin was going for. She wanted to make it look like Luke has had all these pieces for a very long time.
As a musician I have to say the Metallica choice was interesting but not where I would have suggested, I could see him going more on the direction of misfits or smashing pumpkins or something but im biased. I just think the choice for Metallica must have been an aesthetics choice but not a choice for musical depth or intelligence or self awareness.
From what I read it was because Ryan and the director really liked it and wanted it in the film.
@@Daniel_Verhey I'm sure they were purposeful about the choice I just think that while it aesthetically and symbolically makes a lot of sense through the visual and phrase of ride the lightning is obvious, it's just unfortunate that the actual musical taste is questionable - I don't just mean because I don't happen to like Metallica but I mean he doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would like Metallica maybe because that would be too mainstream or something. It emotionally doesn't click with the character in my view, but I can appreciate the aesthetics and it makes the shirt cool just that he's wearing it, rather than the shirt upgrading the character. I probably have no sense of style, but I hated every piece Ryan was wearing in the movie, and that bleached hair. Everything looked very immature, very walmarianish and pretentious. I liked the character, though.
Walmarianish isn't a word unless you're referencing something fictional I don't know about. I respect your opinion but I just disagree, his clothing is very unique and I've not seen anything like Luke Glanton in recent films. The only clothing I didn't like was the red leather jacket, just looks bad to me.
