she isa jerk and there is no way around it, her daughter had sex and burned in a fire, poor girl, i saw nothing in th emovie except her paranoid thoughts and fascist intent that proved otherwise.
also if more people learned she wanted to accuse every man of rape and take samples, if you thought she was unpopular then well she would be soon after she tried that.
That Willoughby letter for his wife, man... So fucking emotional.
serban capraru I sobbed like a baby in the theatre during that scene
All of his letters were emotional. Hit me right in the heart, he did.
serban capraru it broke me
there was no finding of the killer because this isn't a murder mystery film, its about grief, guilt, anger, forgiveness and love. truly a brilliant film
The killer is revealed, however you are right, it is much more than a whodunnit film.
@@barragin9893 He isn’t revealed. What are you talking about?
@@joeriekivits655 The killer was the father - there were multiple red herrings. It was revealed through hints, coincidences, symbolism, etc. Read any in depth examinations of the movie. It was a highly intelligent movie that did not spoon feed the viewer. And the identity of the killer wasn't as important as central theme of the movie. I can elaborate further if you wish.
@@barragin9893 Oh, damn. I’ll watch it again and see if I can find out. Thanks for the reply
@@joeriekivits655 Key moments you should look at-
1. its revealed he was an ex cop - but is no longer... why would the writers put that in there....
2. The knife to throat scene - how quickly he turns violent
3. the age of his girlfriend - he likes very young girls...
4. He set the billboards on fire, at night, same location, time and method the daughter was killed!
5. The restaurant scene.... the mother seems to know, when he admits to burning the billboards...
For all that, there is a great deal of comedy here, and a lot of great acting
Great analysis, but can I add: Anger and Love are not mutually exclusive. In many cases, both anger *and* love are necessary. I personally have found that a lot of the anger I feel toward the world is actually coming from a place of love---I love the world, and I'm angry that it is not a better place---and I think that's what passion is. So, yes, anger begets anger, but sometimes, love begets anger too.
Great points. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent and Real********
that was a surprisingly deep comment coming from someone with the cereal guy as a profile pic 0_0
FlurpzZ you're genius man
I feel that way to, I wanna love the world I can’t stand all the pain in it.

The actress did some amazing job with making those bottomless naive eyes.
what's her name?
Nice analysis. One take away that i got you didn’t mention was at the end, the characters first realized they had a choice in how to handle their anger when they didn’t at the beginning. I loved that. That’s why I think the ending was ambiguous...because what really mattered was they learned they had choices.
Agree! That ending was cathartic for me too. The characters felt it, the actors themselves felt it, and so the audiences felt it, it really felt great.. Like anger quenched with a small cup of cool fresh water, or blown away by a small fresh breeze, not enough to completely end the fire, but enough to know that we have the means to get more.
I dunno…how is even considering the option of killing an innocent man a change in the character arc?
For Dixon, how do we know that his guilt and desire to please Mildred wasn’t the real motivation behind his “intuition” that the guy in the bar was the killer?
People say crazy stuff when drunk in bars all the time. Or the guy could be mentally ill. Without any actual evidence that he’s done anything, how is this justifying murdering him? They seem so focused on satisfying their desire for revenge and guilt that they are willing to almost ignore the importance of making sure they aren’t killing an innocent man, thus allowing their emotions to create another serious crime.
Overall, I found the movie to be a well-intentioned but actually tone-deaf attempt at discussing racism, misogyny, police violence, and family in America. I wonder if the director was actually criticizing what he perceived as blood lust in Americans?
@@willtroy1986 i have to agree 🙊 just rewatched the film and realized it did not age well. when people whom this movie is dragging are praising it (a couple problematic relatives of mine did), you just know it means it didn't do a good job.
I hate to be "that guy," but Red offered Dixon Orange Juice in the hospital. Otherwise, the video was perfect.
It is significant enough to point out, I think.
Lmaoooo
Thanks for showing the real core of this movie. When I saw the trailer, I was afraid that it revealed too much. When I saw the movie, I saw how much more the movie is about. The complexity of the characters was something I didn't expect. And, the non-ending ending was perfect.
Theo Lamp I never got why people hate the ending! It's one of my favorite parts!
@@megamoviez my theory is that the guy who threatened Mildred in the shop was the killer, but the director was talked out of it.
That would have tied everything together, because the current ending left a bunch of storylines unresolved.
Example: how does Dixon trying to find the killer of Mildred’s daughter absolve him of racism at the end? There are some really good critiques from people of color calling out this movie as a failed attempt at discussing racism.
You missed a small detail about the glass of 'water' Red handed Jason. It wasnt water, it was orange juice. This is relevant because of the films use of colour. Red symbolises Anger e.g. the billboards themselves. Yellow (the orange juice) symbolises happiness, honour and optimism. This perfectly represents the dynamic between Red and Jason in that scene as Jason has finally seen the benefit of love and happiness.
The use of colour is relevant in other moments throughout the film but this is my favourite example. Any thoughts?
another interesting fact is that he goes by red because he's a communist
Daniel Pound ah yes the flame that burn Dixon represent happiness and forgiveness
Sam Rockwell just win golden globe hope he will receive Oscar too
Kathiravan Ganesh One of the most underrated actors. He was great in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and also in Moon, Seven Psychopaths, The Way Way Back, The Green Mile, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Kylo Ben You forgot Galaxy Quest! He was great in that!
Kathiravan Ganesh
Frances Mcdormand as well was perfect.
She DID!
He did and also did frances mcdormmand (im sorry if i mispelled it)
Just got back from the movie and seeing this in my subscription box made my day. Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand, and Woody Harrelson made this movie and the theme is very thought provoking.
That scene in the hospital blew me away. Such a small thing but captures many themes of the movie. I really appreciate how the film shows us the downward spiral of grief and anger, but also shows us there's something more for people who are stuck in the spiral.
You mean, a drink of OJ...
psulionz87 didn't Mildred write the letter from chief Willoughby to trick Dixon into going to the police station?
[SPOILERS]
Wallington Cruceta
No. It was really from Cheif Willoughby. Him being at the police station when Mildred set it on fire was just a coincidence.
Dixon being in the station was unintended. Thus, Mildred's reaction in seeing Dixon.
I suppose I was wrong. I thought she planned for dixon to be in the police station and her surprise was seeing him jump out of the fire saving her daughters case.
One of the best films of the year. Great cast and great message throughout the film. Loved the vid!
lex1247
Completely agree
@@IDewWork I’ve seen some interesting critiques from people of color about this movie, and how it actually perpetuates rather than accurately discusses racism in America.
Definitely top 5 of 2017.
Marvin the Martian Same! It's actually my #5 of 2017!
Marvin the Martian top 1*
I'm interested to hear from you guys but what's your other top 5 films of 2017?
It's not about 'pulling back from anger/rage'; it's about the workings of 'grace'. It's not about 'doing' something, it's about letting things 'happening' (the violence 'happens' and the 'kindness' happens). Apart from this 'message', it's one of the best dark comedies I've ever seen, and a roller coaster of a movie.
Y’know what I notice that no one really talks about the movie? The color red. It’s the most striking and noticeable color in this movies scheme. Perhaps it’s a reminder that death, and anger always surround us, and can become part of our environment?
Your film analysis are always amazing to watch. Hope you guys make a video about Call Me By Your Name soon :))
I just saw this movie today before the golden globes and it has some of the best performance I seen in a movie.
Frances mcdormand another oscar performance.
mayur reddy she doesn't deserve to win and even if she does it's not deserving. She's overrated and I don't like her
+Matt Pearce nothing you wrote makes sense
I think she’s a helluv an actress.
"I don't like her" can sum up your whole comment. it was an incredibly nuanced performance and a total departure from her past films. And she did win the Oscar..
This film should have clearly won the 2018 Oscar for best picture!
There’s a theory that the guy who Dixon thought was the rapist was ACTUALLY the rapist. Although since he was a soldier in the army it was covered up by the new sheriff and the rapist’s army higher ups since they knew how bad that would look if word ever broke out about what the soldier/rapist did.
Nah, he raped while on tour. The reputation of a member of the military is much more important while in battle than when he gets back. And crimes by military abroad happen and are often swept under the rug.
If the author did not want to say that that guy was the rapist, then, theorizing would just be adding to a story as if writing fan fiction. It would not be his story and what he wanted to say.
That theory is terrible and misses out on the entire message of the film. Sometimes there is no justice in the world.
Also, what possible reason would the new chief have to cover up the crime? In his few scenes he seems committed to cleaning up the problems of the Ebbing police and successfully closing a murder case would be the best thing he could do to make the police look better in the eyes of the public. (Also, it's suggested that the soldier had committed his rape/murder while on tour and there are many cases of crimes committed by soldiers abroad being covered up by the military which seems more likely).
Little Big Men Productions the only thing that I missed is what the "country with sand" was
Iraq/Afghanistan
Been waiting for this video! One of the best movies of the year, beautifully explained!
I am hooked by the constant pursuit of Screen Prism to examine and unpack films and shows that depict the deepest points of brokenness and depravity in people yet also seek to uncover the redemptive qualities of love and the best of our humanity. Brilliant minds at the heart of this channel.
I just watched the movie and all I could think was “so much anger” and then I came on RUclips to find this. Awesome
I am somewhat surprised that you didn't mention how much the mother's guilt is the cause of her anger. The last interaction with her daughter was full of anger, a decision (making the girl walk instead of drive) and an actual thoughtless curse spoken out loud that came true. It is such a horrifying combination, that the guilt seems beyond human capacity to endure.
It reminds me of the famous case in Canada of the serial killing couple. A girl was told by her parents not to come home late or she would be forced to sleep on the porch as a lesson. That night the killers just happened to be driving by when they saw the girl sleeping on the porch. The killers quietly approached and, you know the rest. I can not possibly imagine the guilt that those parents have experienced.
By the way, the drink that Dixon was offered was not water, it was orange juice.
You have no idea how much I love your channel. Thank you!
I am sad that many people think this film was a social commentary and hated it for not doing that.
Its about repressed grief , helplessness !
I loved this movie, and this discussion expertly verbalizes precisely what made seeing it great! So thanks lol
This true story and performances by some of our all time greatest actors has brought tears to my eyes because of the profoundly loving message of compassion we must show each other no matter what the circumstances if we want peace
Another great video for a great film.
Beautiful essay on a brilliant and complex film.
You really helped me to appreciate this film so much more than I already did. Thank you.
Great insight.
Great video! I knew there was a reason I loved this movie so much.
Quite an excellent appraisal of this brilliant film. If I may be allowed to give another dimension to the characterization of the individuals in the movie it would be to say that Mc Donagh, knowing his people so well, has transported the personality of rural Ireland to rural Missouri and given his principal actors that deep, contradicting and loving Irishness that they possess. Cruel love, profane sanctity, violent gentility make for the essence of oxymoron even when they don’t.
Really? I thought he just took stereotype about angry people in rural US and jumped it to 11. But now that you mentioned it, yeah, I can clearly see and Irish strick in them.
This makes me love this kickass movie even more. Great video!!!
This channel has become one of my favorites in youtube. Keep going! :)
The backlash that's been floating around about this movie is just absurd.
Haven't even watched the video yet but I'm gonna leave a like anyway. I know I won't regret it.
wtf???
Another great analysis! Just wonderful. Nuanced, intelligent, and well thought out.
Such a good video! And I agree with you about the ending. A lot people have been calling it a failure because it didn't have a definitive ending, but that's not the point. The point of the film was how anger and grief transform us, not whether or not we wrap up a murder mystery with a neat bow. The fact that Mildred and Dixon came together and showed each other some compassion and camaraderie in the end was more closure and fuel for hope than catching the killer would have been (even if it would have felt vindicating).
Very insightful video. :)
Dixon may have found the right guy. Midred's daughter was killed 7 months ago and the officer told Dixon that the guy had been back from war for 9 months.
Your channel is awesome , I love your videos 😃
PLEASE make an analysis video of The Florida Project! It is so criminally under viewed by the general public!

Do an analysis of the character of Rocky Balboa!!!
i love you screen prism. i love this movie.
OWESOME VIDEO PLEASE KEEP GOING THE GREAT WORK
I'm sure many people have pointed out that Hayes twice phones to the police station to make sure it is empty before she firebombs it. But I really liked this video and am using it for a discussion about anger with my media group. Thank you!
Brilliant analysis
This movie makes me angry for so much injustice presented, and this video revived all that at a certain level.
You nailed it. Excellent video.
In the hospital room, Red Wilby had no idea that was Jason Dixon when he offered him a drink of orange juice (not water) and recoiled in horror when Dixon tells him that he is actually the cop who assaulted him.
I don't think that's a very good example of forgiveness, and in fact I would say that it is one of the instances of righteous anger in the film, along with Mildred Hayes fury over the death of her daughter. They were both innocents and what happened to them was completely inexcusable.
Please do the leftovers, this show deserves you ,I know it's the most trendy thing right now, but it deserves a bit of light. I love your work !
Fantastic analysis!
Thanks for a great analysis.
Excellent 😊
I don't like to sound woke because I'm not, but it's refreshing to see a female video essayist
There's my voice of wisdom
fun movie - woulda liked a bit more on the bookends tho
After this video the film is more then meets the eye and pretty deep I like the symbolism in this story it was a very good movie
Beautifully stated !
Thank you for this Video i learned a lot
I'm a fan of your videos! I'd love to see you analyze In Bruges, another Martin McDonagh film. It's an overlooked, but touching movie I think you could draw a lot out of.
Great analysis of the film!
I fucking love this movie, gonna buy it on Blu-ray👏🏻👏🏻 thank you ScreenPrism!!
Excellent movie, complete emotional Rollercoaster. Really had to fight back tears when Red handed Dixon the glass of orange juice in the hospital room
Thanks so much for this video! I absolutely loved this movie enought to go back to watch it in theaters a second time. I'm excited that the team on ScreenPrism also wants to talk about this movie, but I think you can look deeper into this movie. What makes Three Billboards so unique is that it doesn't just label anger as a problem to be solved or worked through. It's an emotion with a lot more depth then it's often given credit for (especially in the greater context of hollywood screenwriting). Thinking about the phrase "anger begets anger" watch to see all the ways that characters are motivated by anger. A flashback even tells us that the earliest plotpoint in the film hinges on the daughter being too angry to accept cab money from her mom. And what about the silent anger that's demonstrated in each of the black community members in Ebbing? The torturing of a black man in police custody hangs over their dialogue yet none of these characters act out their anger. What to make of all this is something I can't write down in the span of a youtube comment but I hope people get to find out through watching for themselves a few times. Thanks again for making this video and giving this movie some needed recognition!
"We thought it wouldn't be possible, but we do come to forgive Dixon, too."
you maybe
One of the best fims i have seen ❤️.
Three Billboards is a masterpiece. I keep coming back to it, despite some of it’s flaws. Mcdonagh is one of my favourite filmmakers working today.
And his cast is ALWAYS spot on. Francis Mcdormand is untouchable, an absolute master in her craft.
she is angry miserable person who makes everything and everyone else like her. she is a black hole of anger everywhere she goes.
Like the host’s voice,very soothing.Nice Essay.
This was one of the best films of 2017
Can you do Call Me By Your Name next please? my favorite film of 2017
Raisabear Same here! Where do you live?
Raisabear I live in Lynchburg VA and it was available for like a week recently
I came to the same conclusion, a study of anger (and grief) and its effects, and possible redemption at end, as they start to think about what they are doing, rather than shooting from the hip as before.
The story is second place in many ways, what is interesting is whatching the characters develop.
Best movie recently, but follows on a long trail of quality/nuanced film making on -vaguely- related themes: No country for old men, Comancheira, Sicario ...
I love this channel so much. Are you guys doing Call me by your name?
Great review and awesome music in the background. Can you tell me who did the soundtrack to this video?
Thanks so much! If you go to 10:07 you can see the music we used
Brilliant humane analysis. 👏👏👏❤
I cried on the plane when I watched this.
They should show the movie "FLIGHT" on the play.
i thought the drink offered to dixon was orange juice! i saw this movie in the theater 3 times and i agree that it's amazing. thanks for your videos xoxo
7:05 - the drink was OJ and he went so far as turning the straw towards Dixon to show it wasn't just a half-assed effort.
amazing
This was the legit Best Picture that year. 💯
07:05 He offered him a glass of orange juice, not water. Great video by the way, this is one of my favorite movie 😎
I came herreicht after Renegades take on this movie and the different perspectives and takes on this movie are really interesting.
>Some crimes should never be forgiven
>But we should look at each other with humanity and compassion
Makes sense.
Frances Mcdormand is fantastic in this great movie.
👍🎭
It's not anger. You didn't get the point. She ain't angry. She wants justice to be done, that's all.
One of the brilliant works by Martin McDonagh
For those who havent seen any of mcdonoughs work, it gets uniquely dark, but is weirdly life affirming.
I'm glad you are back doing videos on actual interesting movies
sergio7D when did they stop
