Looking back, Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox was probably the best casting choice in the history of film. The Gods looked down in approval that day.
Love how he stutters my moma .. ma ... mama ... subtle touches that show someone's personality ... would love to see more movies from the director of this movie
Sam Rockwell is a delight. Not only is he a dedicated professional, he's a swell, well-spoken, thoughtful man. He consistently appears in great roles in some of my favorite movies, and I've never heard a bad word from any of his coworkers. He's a great dude.
I love that actor Sam Rockwell. He’s played so many amazing parts and nailed them all. He seems so down to earth with a zany twist. Please don’t ever stop acting Sam Rockwell!
I agree, he can be a sleaze, he can be a jerk, he can be a hero and he can be a cool guy. I'm glad that he finally gets his recognition, first time for me that one of "my" favorites hits it big.
Matchstick Men is great, and i never heard of it until i looked at Sam Rockwell's IMDb page some time after i watched Moon. It was very funny to see Nicholas Cage freak out about Sam's super sleazy ways. Galaxy Quest is also fantastic, Sam steals the show.
I first saw Sam Rockwell in "The Green Mile". Boy, his performance really blew my mind. And right after that, "The Safe Men" with a totally different kind of role. Awesome versatility. Also loved him in "Moon" and of course in the "Three Billboards....". Glad he finally got the recognition he deserved.
Damn, Sam Rockwell. One of the best actors ever, and only now being recognized. Compare this man's performance in "Green Mile" and "Galaxy Quest." Such a talent. He's one of my top 5 for sure.
Alot of us said the same thing about *that* sicilian scene with Walken and Hopper in True Romance, but there's no way in hell they could have put that on the screen.
I agree. Moon fills the cache for ten best/favorite movie ever for me. It's superb. I really like most all of his stuff -- he's been a really underrated actor. So glad that he's getting noted for his work. And damn, you know the man can dance right?
A pedantic editor writes... Um, he’s not getting his ‘comeuppance’, which basically means karmic punishment. (Donald Trump getting divorced by his current wife, because she was leaving him for a young, slim, intelligent and decent human being - That would be comeuppance working.) otherwise, yeah, he’s a great actor...
Such a wonderful film. Fun but not easy and often uncomfortable, in a righteous way. Gives you something to think about. I don't think this film dispenses redemption to any of its characters. But it gives hope, plenty of hope. That's how I felt at least.
It's funny to see him in an interview. Due to the movies I have seen I he was always some deranged weirdo for me. But he's such a bro. What a likeable guy!
I feel like Sam Rockwell is a sleeper hit of an actor. Like he’s always been amazing, but we never gave him the attention he deserved. And he just kept making good things until no one could ignore him.
Couldn’t go wrong with Woody or Sam for the Oscar in Three Billboards... they both gave outstanding performances. They are both the kind of guys that if the script and director are at that high level, they are going to deliver.
Sam Rockwell: excellent actor who has been under the radar for years. Remember him in “Lawn Dog” or as the clone on the moon in “Moon” or as the expendable guy in “Galaxy Quest” ?
Larry Fuckle Yes. It was a fascinating exploration of some of the possible ramifications of cloning human beings. Rockwell played the parts very convincingly to gain the empathy of the audience.
Thanks, George Hawley, for the spoiler alert before you mention something or other about this or that person actually being a clone. Thanks again. Not to spoil the movie for anyone, but don't read George's comment if you don't want "Moon" spoiled for you.
I first saw him as Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest -- he's brilliant as the sort of guy who isn't quite sure of his spot on the food chain. Which is a bit like his role in Three Billboards.
Bruh you asked him about the redemption thing, didn't let him finish his thought showed off your bible knowledge and moved on to talk about Dinklage. Calm down Stephen.
I think these interviews are too short to not have to cut off points and finish without a satisfying end to the conversation. Back in the day for a while, Craig Ferguson would only have one guest and that lead to a ton of memorable conversations.
Three Billboards DOES have hilarious moments well done in good taste. Excellent film, acting, and direction. So happy both of them receiving the Oscar.
i love how colbert doesn't freak out by his guests cursing like on jimmy fallon or other late night talk shows and he'll even swear himself at times like in this clip unapologetically and will carry on the interview without wasting unnecessary airtime
People are so easily offended... Everyone knows someone horrible, and those people are not incapable of doing the right (sort of, in this case) thing. A movie made some viewers uncomfortable because it portrayed an awful person not being awful for then entire run time, get over it.
This. Don't we watch hundreds of movies in which the heroes kill and murder people? Aren't they bad people too? But bring racism into it and a person is somehow irredeemable. BS? Rockwell's character goes through quite a change in the movie and is clearly in the process of growing up and wising up. It doesn't excuse the things he's done, but it shouldn't condemn him for life either.
Jason Patterson They let you make up your own mind on whether he is a racist or not. On the subject of torturing blacks, as Willoughby says, 'There was no.. REAL.. evidence for that'
(spoiler) People have a problem with the concept of redemption in THIS movie? The character had his body burned. He was literally passed through flame for his sins. How is that not enough? The guy looks like a meatball at the end of the movie. Would people have been more comfortable with the character dying slowly and in pain instead of learning the error of his ways and trying to do some good?
Him getting hurt doesn't reedem him. It's not about the punishment, the problem is he hasn't shown anything that suggests he's been redeemed. He never admitted to anything or took responsibility for what he did, he just tried to play a detective, that's it. At the end he even goes out to murder a man he thinks may or may not be a rapist with no evidence whatsoever. People like you is what some are complaining about, hes a torturing, racist, attempted murderer who abused his power. After reading that letter he unsuccessfully tried to help find a rapist murderer and then went out to kill someone that thought could maybe be a criminal. The movie framing that as redemption is a problem
@@Nogli I disagree, I think him and the protagonist going out together implies otherwise. I think it's clear that he supposed to be a good guy by the end, even if that's not the intention I think what is shown on the screen implies that. Most people seem to think of his as redeemed which shows that if your interpretation is true the film did a poor job explaining it.
It's a crime that he hasn't been nominated for an Oscar before this. He's great in everything he does and he's had at least a half dozen roles that were right for the awards crowd, not to mention all of his brilliant comedy that they would never recognize, but should.
Did anyone do a double take when they thought Stephen said, “you were nominated for best porny actor”? The funniest part for me was looking at Sam right after that and saying to myself, “yeah he does kinda have a Leisure Suit Larry vibe tonight...”
When I was a kid, after seeing him in the Green Mile made me want to know this guy very well. Cuz he was and still is an amazing artist. To be able portray characters like he did, takes so much. Exceptional actor.
WOW! This was a surprise, he is really likeable! Since all the roles I have seen him, he is super scary and badass. Great actor and a nice guy. Nice combo! :)
Try watching Moon, you get to see the whole spectrum of behavior and personality of Sam, and Sam :P (he's called Sam in the movie too, because Duncan Jones wrote the script with Rockwell in mind).
I am so attracted to this guy. Even when he was the evil piece of trash in The Green Mile, I was like "ooh, the man who is skillfully portraying this filthy piece of crap is hot!"
He is becoming one of my favorite actors. "Three Billboards" was stunningly great. If you haven't seen "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" yet...you're welcome.
He's brilliant. Frances McDormand is brilliant. Their scenes together... Just powerful stuff. Stephen could have been a bit calmer, here, and let Sam talk a bit more. Maybe finish a thought or two. I'll take it, though.
I was in Asheville, when they were filming “last of the Mohicans”. I love living there. A lot of celebrities go there. Of course, my luck of seeing celebrities never happens. If I did, maybe it’s better I never do, I would be a total douche-bag.(not on purpose, it happens when I get excited) “Morgan Freeman’! I love you man! ....dude, dude, dude take a selfie with me! My friends gonna love this!” (I don’t have friends)
+Larry Fuckle Sigh . You may be right. I haven't heard anything about those three gentlemen, but Hollyweird seems determined to tar anything male that moves, with the same brush. *UGH*
+Larry Fuckle No big! :D Our idols are never what we imagine them to be, I think. In this day and age, there is no mystery left to it, which is really what spoils it.
This guy really a chameleon genuinely he nailed the character exactly just like how it's been described. D' head with a big good heart almost sexy character. And i still hoping for a sequel. PLEASE!!!
he did this 'laugh'...somewhere at the beginning of this sit down....and it Immediately sounded like, and reminded me....of the Green Mile moment in the cage, when he ( 'wild bill) spits all that 'moon pie' all over David Morse' face! ha ha!>....would have been hilarious to make an "Edit' here, with the amazing Rockwell....cutting in all his funniest scenes, gag's, and lines...playing off Steven...and ending up with Colbert's face...all covered in moon pie slime! Lol!..... Can anyone else visualize this?.... come on!...that would be awesome!
Can't believe they talked so much about the end of the movie! I have a movie pass and went in knowing very little and it was such an amazing movie. If you haven't seen it you might not want to watch this interview.
He's one of the most talented and underrated actors out there. Happy that he finally got nominated.
Napok Sam Rockwell is dope!
Most people don't care about Oscars anyways he did win though . I loved his acting in 3 bb now gotta rewatch Charlie's angels again to find him.
Napok ..totally agree...gifted beyond belief
This guy can play a likable guy and a hated guy. Love his stuff.
Looking back, Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox was probably the best casting choice in the history of film. The Gods looked down in approval that day.
That is so trueeee!
but, you love him, all in all.
Sam "Most Underappreciated Actor in Hollywood" Rockwell

Sam Rockwell is a delight. Not only is he a dedicated professional, he's a swell, well-spoken, thoughtful man. He consistently appears in great roles in some of my favorite movies, and I've never heard a bad word from any of his coworkers. He's a great dude.

I'm glad that he finally gets his recognition, first time for me that one of "my" favorites hits it big.
EXACTLY!!! I hope he wins! Did you ever see Matchstick Men? With Nicholas cage? I like Sam Rockwell in that amongst tons of other stuff he’s been in!
Oh yeahhhh!!!! I totally forgot about Galaxy Quest! I LOVED that movie too, sooo much!!!!!!!!
heather c oh wow! Amazing! What play on Broadway?
I first saw Sam Rockwell in "The Green Mile". Boy, his performance really blew my mind. And right after that, "The Safe Men" with a totally different kind of role. Awesome versatility. Also loved him in "Moon" and of course in the "Three Billboards....". Glad he finally got the recognition he deserved.
Damn, Sam Rockwell. One of the best actors ever, and only now being recognized. Compare this man's performance in "Green Mile" and "Galaxy Quest." Such a talent. He's one of my top 5 for sure.
you should see rockwell in box of moonlight
Watch Moon 2009, he was robbed for that one. One of the best performances ever and Three Billboards was the best film of 2017.
Should have won an Oscar for Seven Psychopaths! In fact all the cast should have won an Oscar. Great Film.
Alot of us said the same thing about *that* sicilian scene with Walken and Hopper in True Romance, but there's no way in hell they could have put that on the screen.
4c1dr3fl3x The sicilian scene in Tru Romance is my favorite scene in any movie ever. Love that movie and Seven Psychopaths!
one of my all time faves
Nah look at the oscarsfor that year it was stacked no way Sam over DDL in Lincoln that year
Billy Bickle is my favorite ever.
I was hoping for Rockwell to bust some dance moves upon entrance. Guy can razzle.
He was amazing in Moon.
He was robbed for Moon! Finally getting his comeuppance! Nomination, well deserved!
2kooldancin Moon was incredible. Still my favourite movie ever.
I agree. Moon fills the cache for ten best/favorite movie ever for me. It's superb. I really like most all of his stuff -- he's been a really underrated actor. So glad that he's getting noted for his work. And damn, you know the man can dance right?

Moon is amazing!
Sam Rockwell is easily one of my favorite actors. If anyone hasn't seen 'Moon' I strongly recommend it.
One of my favorites films. Gravity and Interstellar were garbage in comparison.
Surprising to hear that this is his first nomination.
His sex appeal is skyhigh! Great actor! He won as best supporting actor! More projects for Sam Rockwell!👌👏
Such a wonderful film. Fun but not easy and often uncomfortable, in a righteous way. Gives you something to think about. I don't think this film dispenses redemption to any of its characters. But it gives hope, plenty of hope. That's how I felt at least.
Glad he won the Oscar, it was long overdue. His performance in "Moon" was one of many that should have garnered him the award.
I think Sam Rockwell is one of my very favorite actors!!
I *know* he is one of my favorite actors, definitely.
I know!
He should have got the nom for Green Mile. IF he's better in 3 Billboards, I NEED to see that.
He didn't want it, he just wanted a little moon pie!
he is. 3 billboards is brilliantly acted.
Green Mile performance is still the best imo, but he was great in 3 Billboards.
Teri Starr it's a great movie and how he plays a character that is lovable but hated with a passion is beyond me! Great actor
You DO need to see it....!
One of the best movies I've seen in a VERY LONG time!
It's funny to see him in an interview. Due to the movies I have seen I he was always some deranged weirdo for me.
But he's such a bro. What a likeable guy!
ShadyShadok One of my favorite actors
Watch him in "The Way Way Back". He's the most likeable character in the movie!
"moon", "confessions of a dangerous mind", "lawn dogs", "charlie's angels", "matchstick men", "the way back", "3 billboards", "seven psychopaths".
Sam crushed it !!! One of my favorite movies and Sam's character is definitely one of my favorite performances .
Rockwell always plays the most interesting, cool and memorable characters. The way way back is a great film for those of you who haven’t seen it.
I feel like Sam Rockwell is a sleeper hit of an actor. Like he’s always been amazing, but we never gave him the attention he deserved. And he just kept making good things until no one could ignore him.
One of the more underrated actors. I never understood why.
He's delivered some really low-key excellent performances in the last 20 years, and seems like a cool guy. Good choice of guest!
Loved him in The Green Mile.
His performance in The Green Mile made me realize he was already a great actor. Can't wait to see Vice.
He's so handsome 😍
From Dickhead to Dickson, a perfect portrayal. So very deserved. Congrats and hats off, Mr. Rockwell!!!
I haven't seen this movie yet but he gave a brilliant performance in Moon. Awesome actor!
Couldn’t go wrong with Woody or Sam for the Oscar in Three Billboards... they both gave outstanding performances. They are both the kind of guys that if the script and director are at that high level, they are going to deliver.
He has the same laugh in The Green Mile ;)
Sam Rockwell: excellent actor who has been under the radar for years. Remember him in “Lawn Dog” or as the clone on the moon in “Moon” or as the expendable guy in “Galaxy Quest” ?
George Hawley - I loved him in "Galaxy Quest"!
George Hawley moon was awesome..that went so unnoticed
Larry Fuckle Yes. It was a fascinating exploration of some of the possible ramifications of cloning human beings. Rockwell played the parts very convincingly to gain the empathy of the audience.
Thanks, George Hawley, for the spoiler alert before you mention something or other about this or that person actually being a clone. Thanks again. Not to spoil the movie for anyone, but don't read George's comment if you don't want "Moon" spoiled for you.
Man, from “matchstick men” to “moon,” always loved this guy.
I think that guy is loved by literally everyone.
Ugh I love Sam's laugh
All I could think of this interview was how much he sounded like himself playing Zaphod Beeblebrox.
RIGHT?!! HAHAHAH & The Green Mile. He's an amazing actor.
I first saw him as Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest -- he's brilliant as the sort of guy who isn't quite sure of his spot on the food chain. Which is a bit like his role in Three Billboards.
"Slim, are you wearing my underwear? Cos I'm wearing yours and they ain't doing the trick!" 🤣 He was the highlight of Hitchhikers
What a superb actor - fantastic range, comedy timing. They always say that if you can do funny, then you can do anything. Bravo sir
He deserved that Oscar! Congrats Sam!!
I loved how childish he was reading comics playing with toys and how hard he took his friends murder. Racist or not he was very likeable.
It seems like they cut the video, I think he answer the question... but we’ll never know
He finished, WTF did you watch?
Absolutely. Spotted that too. I adore Stephen but that was just annoying.
Johnny Doe all we really want to know about it dinklage.
Love him in The Way Way Back, massively underrated movie and great performance from Sam.
Three Billboards DOES have hilarious moments well done in good taste. Excellent film, acting, and direction. So happy both of them receiving the Oscar.
Don’t forget Sam’s mad dance skills.
i love how colbert doesn't freak out by his guests cursing like on jimmy fallon or other late night talk shows and he'll even swear himself at times like in this clip unapologetically and will carry on the interview without wasting unnecessary airtime
One of the best actors alive right now.
One of the few people that 'purposely messy hair' thing works on past 25.
ummmmmmmmmm... that's not "messy" but u keep being u
Yeah, that’s not messy, thats the Ross hairdo
I do messy hair.... morty... i do messy hair
Age of (not so)new message is starting to show , relax old timer
Hahaha new message. If I had hair, I would do it. Then I would color it orange, like “Drop Dead Fred”

I saw the film and was very confused about what people were taking about. He wasn’t that bad.
Omg THANK YOU for saying this, couldn't have put it better myself. People are horrible.
Sebastian B. SO TRUUEEE
Some people just wanna see the world burn for the sake of the glow. I was happy he redeemed himself, personally.
Him getting hurt doesn't reedem him. It's not about the punishment, the problem is he hasn't shown anything that suggests he's been redeemed. dont forget, sam rockwell was in the first TMNT 90s film.
Haha really, damn, now i need to rewatch that pizza-shit.
Regular? Or Menthol?
He was in the Foot!
Brilliant movie.Sam and all the cast were terrific.written and directed by a clever man
When I was a kid, after seeing him in the Green Mile made me want to know this guy very well. Cuz he was and still is an amazing artist. To be able portray characters like he did, takes so much. Exceptional actor.
…so if people can’t be redeemed because they change then what’s the point?
He played a hated guy who’s very likeable. 😂😂
Great movie and great performance! One of the greatest actors our there gets finally the recognition he deserves!
He fits in every genre perfectly.
I love his comedy also.
Sam Rockwell is a "Hottie" -- loved him in --- Moon.
MOON is one of the best sci-fi films ever made
He just lits up the room.
Therr spark in his presence.
Excellent movie.
Stephen sounds a little tipsy at the end- "It's a beautiful move me". Lol.
the movie was truly amazing. They took it to the next level !!!!!
Jokes are the sorbet of drama. - Very well put.
Love this guy! So entertaining.
did he just talk about the movie ending? spoilers broh...
I love how he always drinks on these shows. He's so natural
DethstruXioN ™ I will. Thanks!
I really like his character in The Way Way Back!
I am so attracted to this guy. Even when he was the evil piece of trash in The Green Mile, I was like "ooh, the man who is skillfully portraying this filthy piece of crap is hot!"
I know, right?!? Believe it or not, his character in that movie was the reason I tried moonpies, lol 😆
Sam should have won an Oscar for "Moon."
gotta love the rockwell.. moon is one of my favorite movies.
I love Sam. I wish this guy would let him talk though!
I cannot believe he hasn't received more nominations. His work is fantastic.
Martin McDonagh really is a genius. So true :)
Sam is one of the most under rated actors. he's been amazing in everything I've seen him in. he totally rocks this movie.
Holy shit, it was filmed in Asheville? Would’ve loved to meet them.
Eddie Cardwell actually Sylva and Black Mountain but the hotel/production office was in Asheville. All very nice people (source: I was on the crew)
He is right about anti-heroes in the movie. I loved it overall, but i didnt know at times if McDormand was meant to be the protagonist or not.
I can’t believe this guy was trapped in the basement for 5 days without any beer.
Stephen forgot to ask him when he played the thug leader in the original Turtles movie
when I see this guy, I just think about how good he can James Brown shuffle... this dude can move.
Wow Colbert. You didn’t go easy on spoilers.
He's such an amazing actor I can't believe this is his first Oscar nomination, He should have definitely got one for Moon.
Three Billboards was such a beautiful movie. Rockwell and McDormand each deserve an oscar
I want to hear more about the tour!
love that seven psychopaths movie btw
Definitely in my top three favorite actors; along with Mr. Jeff Goldblum, and Mr. James Spader.
jade fire #metoo will fix that
+Larry Fuckle Sigh . You may be right. I haven't heard anything about those three gentlemen, but Hollyweird seems determined to tar anything male that moves, with the same brush. *UGH*
jade fire srry for bringing you down Lol just messin abit
+Larry Fuckle No big! :D Our idols are never what we imagine them to be, I think. In this day and age, there is no mystery left to it, which is really what spoils it.
What a reasonable exchange..am I still on youtube?
"7 Psychopaths." A bunch of my fave actors (Walken, Rockwell, Harrelson) in the darkest comedy EVER. If you haven't seen it - SEE IT!
This guy really a chameleon genuinely he nailed the character exactly just like how it's been described. D' head with a big good heart almost sexy character. And i still hoping for a sequel. PLEASE!!!
About time!Sam deserves it!Excellent actor.
Just watched the movie. Amazing movie, amazing performance from Sam.
he did this 'laugh'...somewhere at the beginning of this sit down....and it Immediately sounded like, and reminded me....of the Green Mile moment in the cage, when he ( 'wild bill) spits all that 'moon pie' all over David Morse' face! ha ha!>....would have been hilarious to make an "Edit' here, with the amazing Rockwell....cutting in all his funniest scenes, gag's, and lines...playing off Steven...and ending up with Colbert's face...all covered in moon pie slime! Lol!..... Can anyone else visualize this?.... come on!...that would be awesome!
He's one of my favorite actors and 'Better Living Through Chemistry' is one of my favorite movies
Sam Rockwell is amazing. Enough. ❤
Can't believe they talked so much about the end of the movie! I have a movie pass and went in knowing very little and it was such an amazing movie. If you haven't seen it you might not want to watch this interview.
His best role to date was his character in the first ninja turtles movie. Best screen depiction of a ninja gang hooligan I have ever seen.
