I could actually see tears in the eyes of almost every woman who stood up with her. This moment, this tiny moment which was supposed to be wholly for Frances McDormand, was turned by her into one for actresses and women all over the world. That moment was not only hers, it was OURS. And I think, that I wasn't the only person who teared up a bit... Margot Robbie, and almost every actress in the room had tears in their eyes, because these few words by McDormand articulated their emotions very accurately. Best monologue of the night!!! Her performance in Three Billboards outside ebbing Missouri was better than her performance in Fargo.Congratulations to her 👏👏👏👌👌👌😊😊😊
It is worth noting that she has always won whenever she was nominated in Lead. She has been nominated 5 times - 3 times in Supporting and twice in Lead - and won both of the latter. Frances is basically the female Michael Caine (he was nominated 4 times in Lead and twice in Supporting and won both of the Supporting nods).
Shubham, I totally agree this win was better than her performance in Fargo. Don't hate me people but I never thought she should have won for Fargo. Good movie, but not the greatest one ever made, and as for her performance she didn't first appear in it until close to 50 min in. Supporting more than Best, IMO
Frances WAS the film. Sally's performance was incredibly moving, but she was part of an ensemble (which was part of the best overall pic). GDT's vision, and then coaching of her in such a role, along with Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer as her "voice," made them essential components to Hawkins' successful portrayal. Meanwhile all McDonagh needed to do was give McDormand a script, and back off.
This what is looks like to embrace your own awkwardness! ...as the the only way to be able to do things that feel equally challenging and important to do--so beautifully raw courage!
Frances Mcdormand deserved that award. She deliver a terrific performance full of realistic emotions. But Sally Hawkins enchanted me with her role in "The Shape of Water". Also if someone is interested to know her work, here is a list of all the projects that were nominated by the Oscars that includes the year of the ceremony and the name of the actress who defeated her in the category for best actress and best supporting actress. ª Mississippi on fire (BSA,1989) (Defeated by Geena Davies in "The Accidental tourist" ª Fargo (BA, 1997) (Won the Oscar) ª Almost famous (BSA, 2001) (Defeated by Marcia Gay Harden in "Pollock") ª North Country (BSA, 2006) (Defeated by Rachel Weisz "The Constant Gardener") ª Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (BA, 2018) (Won the Oscar)
I was torn all through January and February as I saw each film. Gut said Frances but damn that was hard to pick. Saoirse is probably one of the best at pulling off accents.
Both times Frances McDormand won, the Academy Award had a sort of Independent Spirit Award face. Weird. It's not only because of her and the best actress result. Naturally, it's not only.
I love that now, 3 years later, she’s the favorite to win Best Actress on perhaps the most diverse nominations list in Academy history. For a performance that was directed by the first Chinese woman ever nominated for Best Director.
It's crazy that Jodie hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since 1995, despite terrific performances in Contact, Panic Room and The Brave One. I hope she takes that one great, meaty acting role and gets a 5th nomination and maybe a 3rd Oscar coz she so deserves it
I feel like a lot of the times when actresses win for Best Actress they almost always never get nominated after that. Halle Berry's win is the saddest of the bunch. Not only is she the first & only POC woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, but after her win she never got nominated again & her career declined instead of becoming a big start after winning such a huge award. She went as far as winning a Razzie (her speech was brilliant btw, I love her). It's just sad...
Acknowledging a contributor/enabler of a patriarchal hierarchy on any level is astounding. Male oppressors (which is of course redundant) would be lucky to be cropdusted by a woman.

5) Streep, 4) Ronan, 3) Hawkins, 2) Robbie, 1) McDormand Well I can't speak for everyone, obviously, but I think this was an absolutely amazing field of nominees where I would have been happy seeing any of them winning. McDormand and Robbie are equally stunning, while Hawkins and Ronan give wonderful performances for their respective roles. Even Streep, with her ridiculous twenty-first nomination, honestly delivers her strongest effort in many years with "The Post". I love this category as it is and any snubs I can think of - Emma Stone for Battle of the Sexes, Jessica Chastain for Molly's Game, Michelle Williams for All the Money in the World - would probably only replace Streep in the end.
Mitchell Murray Jennifer Lawrence in mother! was a revelation... She blew me away with that performance and instead of nominating Streep or Ronan the academy should've given her a nomination... But the movie was too controversial and polarizing for the conventional academy.... Jennifer was robbed....

I’ve never seen anything of hers before and I still haven’t seen Three Billboards but I keep coming back to this speech and I am continually in awe of her. What a badass, driven, well-spoken, and _gracious_ woman.
You should watch it and Fargo
Yes watch Billboards it was amazing
I just finished watching it for the first time. Watch it- she is incredible!!
She had the best Best Actress speech I’ve even heard. So memorable and inspiring.
Go fuck yourself
The way she laughs
Scares the shit out of me
i called it crazy giggling lol
Celestinez Crazy Feminist Hysteria gone wild as a boar possesed by the soul of a jellyfish with mallaria.
Tis the sound of mania :') ;)
*The intro to this speech had everyone CENTERED on her speech - the way she put that strength in her voice was EPIC!*
"Meryl, if you do it everyone else will"
I could actually see tears in the eyes of almost every woman who stood up with her. This was the moment when women in the industry showed a United front, and it was a kind of victory in it's own way.
One of the most beautiful speeches I have ever heard.
I swear to god
Sally Hawkins is the most underrated actress ever
Assa Darlingtoni I agree
she was nominated for 2 Academy Awards, and won one Golden Globe and one Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival, what do you mean underrated ?
Her voice in Never Let Me Go was so angelic and ASMR-ic :D
@@adilelnhaily1960 yeah, but all these awards are for the shape of water. she doesn't have any good roles. the saddest part is that that happens to many talented actors.
@@reginageorge7666 the Golden Globe and Silver Bear Award she had them for HAPPY-GO-LUCKY. And she did many great British films, but these are more artsy independent films and not major blockbusters.
Jodie Foster and Frances McDormand, two of the legends we are so lucky to have
She’s so well mannered and classy. On her way to the stage she shook hands with the host and waved her hand to the cameraman. Jennifer rushed her to the mic as if Frances were a newbie. I know there’s no much time for an acceptance speech but for me it looked like ‘Hunnie, these guys are nobody’…The way she greeted them was so consistent with what she said about raising her kid to value himself and those around. Not just empty words. 👏🏼
Frances you're a bloody legend, well done. Right up there with Meryl Streep, Rachel Weisz, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightly, Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Jodie welcomed Frances to the double-winners club.
Edit: She just became the female DDL.
Both are double Best Actress winners.
Meryl? Cate?
Pandu Miharja Meryl has 3, I’m not sure about Cate
@@lourdesknowles4990 Cate does have 2..Supporting Actress for The Aviator and for her leading role in Blue Jasmine...should have won for Elizabeth as well...
Hilary Swank won two for best actress as well
1. Frances McDormand
2. Margot Robbie
3. Sally Hawkins
4. Saoirse Ronan
5. Meryl Streep
Out Meryl at 2nd spot
*Put
My list:
1. Sally Hawkins
2. Margot Robbie
3. Frances Mcdormand
4. Saoirse Ronan
5. Meryls Streep
1. Frances McDormand
2. Sally Hawkins
3. Margot Robbie
4. Saoirse Ronan
5. Meryl Streep
Diego Pisfil I, Tonya as a movie is nowhere near Three Billboards lol
after 5 years, finally I watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri". She deserved the oscar.
I love that she said “inclusion rider” because fast forward to three years later Chloe Zhao won best director and Frances won best actress
Shubham Goel : I agree. She's fearless in everything she does. Reminds me of my mom.
Shubham, I totally agree this win was better than her performance in Fargo. Don't hate me people but I never thought she should have won for Fargo. Good movie, but not the greatest one ever made, and as for her performance she didn't first appear in it until close to 50 min in. Supporting more than Best, IMO
This movie is awesome..I see it once a week and every time I see it I just see it and am like why can't I move. I love this movie
It was truly truly amazing and memorable, but disagree, I still think that Fargo is her best performance, she was great and hilarious in Almost Famous
2:11 No lie, I yelled out when she said that! What a boss lady
I clapped and said YEAH! 👏✊💪
Well deserved to Frances but I was rooting for Sally to win! What a brilliant, yet heartbreaking performance.
deaetee me too... huhuhu
me to,but Frances deserve to
Nah Sally Hawkins was way too mannered, she overdid it.
No. Frances is the best and should win for Best actress.
This what is looks like to embrace your own awkwardness!
...as the the only way to be able to do things that feel equally challenging and important to do--so beautifully raw courage!
She wasnt embracing her awkwardness 😅 She was literally being an ass through the Oscar lenses.
Frances is a legend.
Hold the highest amount of respect for her.🙌❤️
The lady in 3:41 was like "wtf am I doing"
Dicky Dewantara She is Vanessa Taylor, a writer who nominated for The Shape of Water.
Yeah 😂
answer: following the herd
lmao
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Frances Mcdormand deserved that award. She deliver a terrific performance full of realistic emotions. But Sally Hawkins enchanted me with her role in "The Shape of Water".
Also if someone is interested to know her work, here is a list of all the projects that were nominated by the Oscars that includes the year of the ceremony and the name of the actress who defeated her in the category for best actress and best supporting actress.
ª Mississippi on fire (BSA,1989) (Defeated by Geena Davies in "The Accidental tourist"
ª Fargo (BA, 1997) (Won the Oscar)
ª Almost famous (BSA, 2001) (Defeated by Marcia Gay Harden in "Pollock")
ª North Country (BSA, 2006) (Defeated by Rachel Weisz "The Constant Gardener")
ª Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (BA, 2018) (Won the Oscar)
Who is here after her third Oscar winning??
Me ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Me... Lol.
Frances McDormand will be this year's Best Actress she was so great in Nomadland
You won!
it's been almost 5 years and I still tear up every tome while watching this
I wanted Sally Hawkins or Saoirse Ronan but McDormand's performance was also strong.
true
I was torn all through January and February as I saw each film. Gut said Frances but damn that was hard to pick.
Saoirse is probably one of the best at pulling off accents.
Or Margot
Sally you'll get one someday. I do think everyone in this category deserves at least one Oscars
Meryl and Frances already have at least one.
Saoirse HAS to win soon, this was her third nomination
Sally's second and Margot's first
Meryl already got a bunch lol
@@davidao2551 Even Meryl Streep didn't have 3 nominations in Saoirse's age. And she lives just around the corner from me, Ireland. Not Meryl :-))
She is the best!👍
Both times Frances McDormand won, the Academy Award had a sort of Independent Spirit Award face. Weird. It's not only because of her and the best actress result. Naturally, it's not only.
FUVK YOU JACOB FUCK YOU

my love for Frances McDormand will never die, she is a total badass and that speech definitely confirmed it. Love and power to you.
I love that now, 3 years later, she’s the favorite to win Best Actress on perhaps the most diverse nominations list in Academy history. For a performance that was directed by the first Chinese woman ever nominated for Best Director.
This aged well!
One could feel her strong personality from the moment she stepped onto the stage. Amazing and powerful speech!
It's crazy that Jodie hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since 1995, despite terrific performances in Contact, Panic Room and The Brave One. I hope she takes that one great, meaty acting role and gets a 5th nomination and maybe a 3rd Oscar coz she so deserves it
How about The Accused?
I feel like a lot of the times when actresses win for Best Actress they almost always never get nominated after that.
Halle Berry's win is the saddest of the bunch. Not only is she the first & only POC woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, but after her win she never got nominated again & her career declined instead of becoming a big start after winning such a huge award. She went as far as winning a Razzie (her speech was brilliant btw, I love her). It's just sad...
How awesome is it that she shook the hand of the handler guy (no idea what that duty is called)? I love her so much!!
I know right !! Also WHO IS HE !!!
Acknowledging a contributor/enabler of a patriarchal hierarchy on any level is astounding. Male oppressors (which is of course redundant) would be lucky to be cropdusted by a woman.
“Meryl if you do it everyone else will”
God I’m I’m a few years late but seeing all these powerful women stand proud together is inspiring.
Can't believe I'm just now seeing this 2 years later! I've admired Frances forever so that ending statement gave me super-sized feels. What a force she is, just *𝐖OW*
One of the most powerful Oscar speeches. I love her.
I love how she briefly returned to her character from the movie at the beginning of the speech ❤️ she is
SUCH an amazing actress
She is beautiful too!
I loved that Saoirse was the first one up! Can’t wait for her to finally get an Oscar of her own!!!!
This is surely in top best Oscars speeches of all time
Frances is such a mood. Winning an oscar and do the mic drop move lmao
5) Streep, 4) Ronan, 3) Hawkins, 2) Robbie, 1) McDormand
Well I can't speak for everyone, obviously, but I think this was an absolutely amazing field of nominees where I would have been happy seeing any of them winning.
@Zarar Afridi i don't think so, Saoirse Ronan was amazing on Lady Bird,it was a well deserved nomination
@@davidao2551
Jennifer or Jessica should have replaced Meryl IMO but oh well ;P
Maybe in the future?????
Vicki Krieps in Phantom Thread!
She and Sam were equally unforgettable in 3 Billboards. I was very happy they both won.
I've seen it three times now and each time I appreciate it more. If you don't like it that's your call, but maybe you've missed something.
Sally Hawkins is the cutest human being. And truly one of the best actresses of our time.
4:18 "Inclusion Rider" Frances McDormand alluding to Chloe Zhao and Nomadland. Now we know what she meant by those words because Nomadland is going to be a big Oscar contender.
What does it mean??
@@vighneshpillai7996 it's a term used for people in arts to demand that their projects before being made or being a part of are diverse enough in terms of gender and racial equity. Not sure about the percentage.
Well it won best pic and best actress
She’s so talented and down-to-earth it’s mind-blowing and refreshing. She treats everyone with respect and love, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She’s a true beast at acting, and a badass of a human being. Way to go Frances!
Frances McDormand saying that she has some things to say gives me untold joy
Looking back it really was amazing she made her point so succinctly. No rambling on, no losing your attention. Damn, this was a powerful acceptance speech.
3:42 will always be my favourite part.
"Anybody out there?"
she's been my favourite actress for almost 10 years, I'm 19, she is the reason why I became interested in movies, she's truly an amazing not just as an actress, but as a person
One of the absolute best Oscars speeches ever. Tears and chills every time.
3:52 - 'A MEME JUST READY TO BE BORN'
3:42 also has potential, like "yeah bitch, I'm major and you don't"
@@leonkane8570 HAHAHA
She's such a class act, said hi to everyone when she walked on stage 💞💞
She is so cool.
What an actress! She’s not phony, she’s just Frances!
This speech literally changes my life. Not kidding. I wrote about it to get into film school and now I’m getting jobs as a DP. This was my sign
Go you !!
3:52 me when the pizza delivery comes by
It makes me so glad to know that Frances McDormand is a two-time Oscar winner, and both wins were for the only times she was nominated for LEADING performance. Being a character-actor, she tends to get supporting roles
I never get bored by this. I love her! What an amazing stun!
Frances one of my favourite actresses since Fargo I am her fan .
Almost every "Best Actress" video I watch Meryl Streep is a part of it!
Also, Saoirse makes her eyebrows dance everytime they say her name.
