Oh my god, this attitude is probably the reason why you're suffering like mad, not the solution! That's exactly the problem with this movie and even more with this video. It makes it look like this is a lifestyle that can be justified.
I had a slacker friend who never seemed to compare himself to anyone and lacked any ambition and I was always so jealous of him because whenever I was stressed out about tests or school, or any kind of achievement he was always content never going anywhere or doing anything and he felt so free becuse of it. I don’t know a ton about minimalism but I think he represents a much different lifestyle. He’s still got a bunch of hippie possessions. But I get what you mean. He’s not focused on materialism in the least. Balance and equanimity, as the video says.
@@pinkbrando I agree. The Dude is a contentist, as in he is content with his brand, he needs no other. Just that rug that really tied the room together, and his briefcase; "no that was a separate incident." The dude certainly had nothing against materialism and was even willing to call the police to get his back, it simply was not his main motivation. He was content with "ten grand man", but he definitely was willing to do a little "work" for it.
It’s actually quite a brilliant and simplistic philosophy. We all get so caught up in worrying about meeting societal expectations. The Dude teaches us that it’s okay to say “F**k it, man” and just roll with the punches, for better or worse. Life is going to happen regardless of how much (or little) we do. It’s actually very similar to the ending with Margie and Norm in Fargo, who are doing pretty well for themselves, sans all the drama and dysfunction of many of the other characters, who only seem to care about money.
I watched this movie the first time with my father probably back when I was say 14 or so. It was a pretty funny and wacky movie and it became one of my favorite movies. Years later I started to understand the movie and and now I realize I'm living by the Dude's philosophy day by day. While I'm actually trying to have a further education and eventually becoming a history teacher unlike the Dude. I'll always be content with my little life and enjoy the things in it from my loving family and friends, listening to and playing sweet music or just a stopping to smell the air. There's always beauty in this hard, evil world and I know I'll always find it.
I feel like i was well on my way to becoming "Dude-like", then I decided to grow up, get married and have kids. Twenty years on, I'm not sure I made the right decision.
If the woman you love supports "the dude" lifestyle, then you've made it. Of course, you have to provide, but the cosmos will accommodate accordingly, should you "take it easy". People think they're in control, when in reality, everything (from the weather, to your past, immediate surroundings, or desires) influences your decision making. Shit, you may be working now to secure your future as "a dude".
There’s a fine line between being Dude-like and actually being a bum whose life isn’t that easy. You must balance all of it. Having a family certainly doesn’t stop you from being a Dude.
Sometimes you're in a situation where you have to tap into the philosophy of The Dude to get you through. Everyone notices that The Dude writes a check for 69¢, but nobody ever notices that it's also post dated for the 11th. We find that the next day or two is the 9th thanks to the landlord.
For a movie with as much cursing as this one has, I'm amazed you were able to do a 15 minute video on it and only have to use the bleep a handful of times. Happy Day of the Dude!
Awesome content. Great how you tied masculinity into his character. Never thought of his dudeness being a resistance to machismo and capitalist goals. Thank u.
Everything, from the soundtrack to the 'story' (haha), the acting, the dialogues, the atmosphere.....its a masterpiece. Im not surprised ppl cant let go of that blissful, peaceful, insanely funny vibe. It generates good emotions and feelings. You wont watch the movie and feel bad. Itll make you smile.
Thanks to you I learned about Slacker Noir; a term I haven't heard before up until now. It certainly fits this film, which in all honesty, I was never completely sure about labeling it as simply a comedy.
Ok this is officially one of my favorite Screenprism videos! I've loved The Big Lebowski since I was 15 and I just turned 30 but I've never seen an analysis video about it, let alone an excellent one like this. Well done!
I remember hearing the term, 'slacker' being used a lot back in early/mid 90's grunge era. It definitely pre-dated The Big Lebowski. By '98, it was pretty much out-dated (like the grunge scene itself).
Two of my all time favorite movies are Lebowski and Blade Runner- I guess neo-noir just appeals to my gen x tastes. Can't help but imagine The Dude chasing down replicants in 2019 LA lol
The analysis is spot on...The Dude is less subjected to the imposed anxiety of outcome that we all seem to believe in.... he has transgressed concern with future and surrendered to just what arrises...'lets see what happens' and deal with that. Its the only way to live......savour the juice of every moment by not continually resisting or rejecting the present experience. The Dude truly does abide.
Hey ladies, I noticed you’re not pushing for patreon subscribers recently but it really helps. Your imploring fans in past videos led me to happily pledge! You may want to consider it...
@2:20 FACT CHECK: “Abide”. The dude doesn’t have an original thought in his head. He only repeats what he hears someone else say. There’s more than a dozen times this happens in the movie. This instance, Mr. Lebowski said “I will not abide another toe”. Abide has two definitions. Mr. Lebowski used the first definition ‘not tolerate’. And the dude used the second definition ‘accept or act in accordance with’.
This is the best look into this film I have ever seen. Thanks for this!! Not a lot of people take the time to appreciate the in and and outs and what have yous of this film. The dude abides!
As the definitive Big Lebowski lover (I do have a metal box version, it really ties my film collection together) of 30 years this video-appraisal comes as an Epiphany. You have brought me enlightenment where before there was only a shaggy-dog -story. Man.
What you miss is that Dudeism was already here, being practiced quietly everywhere , and now here is the man himself, the embodiment of all things Dude...
Ok now I want to go watch The big Lebowski. I watched it back when it hit home video. Back when Blockbuster was still a thing. Can you millennials believe we used to have to get up and drive to a store and walk the aisles hoping the new release we wanted wasn’t all sold out (rented out) for the evening? Crazy huh? Now we have Netflix and On-demand and we never go without. Our much loved movie is ALWAYS available at ANYTIME. Man how things have changed.
i love this movie a lot and so glad you guys have done a vid one of my all time faves and on it's 20th anniversary Happy Dude Day ScreenPrism and The Dude Abides ;)
Isn't it wonderful how this story by the Cohens, that was based on a Dude they met, some actors they wanted to use and wrote parts for, an insane director in hollywood everyone knew (Goodman's character), all were thrown into a cheesy 1950's Film Noir detective plot along with a lot of 70's drug culture influence and it became this masterpiece that hangs together and presents a cohesive film, even though it has no earthly reason for doing so? I don't know about you, but I take comfort in knowing that they are out there, just tying it all together for us.
I love the movie. I always wondered how did he make a living. Bowling, drinking at a bar, rent, car insurance etc. etc..Where did he get the money? He may not need to much to live a reduced lifestyle----but you do need some.
I've often wondered that too. Walter and Donny seem to have some kind of employment. Perhaps he was left a small trust from a loving grandma or there are some disability checks coming in. The Dude is definitely an off the grid type who doesn't need much being the bowling league and the occasional joint to be happy.
I love how The Dude is a man not suited to be in his place and time but one that was needed and just like the character, the movie itself was not suited to be in its place and time but one that was needed (as indicated by the lack of success it had when it was released compared to years after).
I think that besides the plot, acting and humor, the movie is about anticonformism and not taking some superficial aspects seriously. The dude acts in the same honest "unfiltered" way, no matter the person who is in front of him (social status, gender...) He doesn't care about the social conventions/protocol. I think that in a world with people becoming too conditionned, superficial and stressed, the "unidentifyed object" side of this movie and its rebel spirit (even by just being ourselves in daily life) contributed to its success and cult status
This movie really changed my life, i was 17 when i saw it first, just started Smoking weed but was still a very easy to upset Person i would go on longrage rants telling everybody how stupide they are and remained angry for a long time after each Situation, then i saw how the dude had a Bad das after a terrible day and just stayed chilled and shrug it off with a i cant ruin my day because of this. Or when he met the big lebowski and realised that any more Konfrontation will do nothing at all so he just Said fuck it and thought of a difrent solution.
July 2019 I really appreciate this break down of this movie. I watched this movie some time ago because I am a fan of the Coen brothers- Raising Arizona was the movie that made them (Coen brothers) stand out in my brain. There is something in the Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona that appeals to me. Both of these movies are so deeply planted into their own identity, making no excuses and unapologetically being what they are. I know now that the Polish culture has a strong influence here in both movies. I learned this because I used to work for a Polish man named Kaminiski and he loved this movie The Big Lebowski. This was always facinating to me how he could identify with a movie that barely identifies itself as being Polish- as far as I know- but Mr. Kaminski barely asserted himself as bing Polish, beyond his last name and loving this movie. But how would I know anything about the Polish identity? I barely know anything about my own culture as an african american man from the ghetto streets of Cleveland Ohio... I never knew how much the Dude and I had in common- based on what you have enumerated herein this video; I'm a black version of the Dude. I have absolutely no desire to be ambitious based on the established concept of success and achievement- currently as I type these words I am in my underware and a t-shirt. I spend most of my days watching youtube videos about movies because I love movies and I love to write. I barely eat because I have no money because I hardly work. I have just enough to live off of. My main goal in life is to write and day dream everyday, sometimes I'll critique a movie or scroll around on Reddit for stories and fan theories. Some time ago I realized how much I wanted to be like the Coen brothers. They wrote stories based on their identity as Polish white men from the urban sector of america. They don't have to make up excuses as to why their stories are so deeply rooted into their identity and culture, nor do they have to apologize for this either. I wanna do that. Black folks (where I'm from) know little to nothing about this movie The Big Lebowski. To us this movie does not resonate as a cult classic. It simply does not hit home with us on a cultural level, now, this may not be the case with more "evolved" blacks who have assimilated more into the european culture and identity of america but most common, urban afriacan americans from the ghetto won't know much about this movie at all- what does that say about me? I'm just a ghetto child who was neglected in my youth to the point where I turned to television and movies while my parents were absentee. So I developed a love for movies and writing stories. I think the one thing that I lack that the Dude embodies his aversion to violance and how he utterly rejects any violent resolutions to most situations. Well, I don't smoke as much weed as the Dude does- I don't smoke weed at all. I don't drink, I don't do any drugs of any sort so I am prone to be a bit more open to expressing violence. This is a byproduce of my enviroment. I didn't really enjoy this movie. It was not very memorable to me. I did however enjoy Raising Arizona- it was one of the funnest and heartwarming movies I'd watched as a kid. I think I liked it because it was simple story and it was told in a very carefree kinda way, a little like Pulp Fiction, stories that are easily told are the ones that you believe the most. I've heard my fair share of stories from the time I spent in prison. There is a spontaneity to a really good, simple (and true) story that I always could take notice of. I guess I didn't really enjoy the Big Lebowski because there was nothing special about a dude who lives pretty much the same way I live- hes in his PJs most of the day, smoking weed, doing a whole lot of nothing plus sleeping with wealthy white women from time to time, oh, plus he bowls with a couple idiots pretty frequently: if you change a few things around, that is pretty much my life too. The movie was uneventful to me. Dull and boring, I don't even remember how it ended. I know he got to sleep with that rich white lady. I don't recall what happened with those Swedish dudes or the Big Lebowski. It was just an odd boring movie to me. I guess I'd better watch it again.
I saw this movie 10 years ago and realized I wanted to be a "dude". Now, look at me. Unemployed, sitting in my room watching tv shows, reading comics and playing video games all day long.
I'm an Ordained Dudeist Wizard Priest. I go by Canndalf the High. Dudeism is modern Taoism. At first I was just looking to perform weddings as a wizard. I liked the movie & had heard about Dudeism from a meme on Facebook. After my ordaination I started reading the Tao Te Ching & it makes a lot of sense.

icecream with alcohol - what more can you want? :)
Haha... I loved them before this film. I can't believe anyone else would enjoy milk, vodka and kaluha
the drink, yes, the russians not so much especially Putin (Trump’s boss dude)
Really ...u can drink milk and alcohol...that sounds like it'll f up my stomach...!!? Crazzy
Everyone notices that The Dude writes a check for 69¢, but nobody ever notices that it's also post dated for the 11th. We find that the next day or two is the 9th thanks to the landlord.
@@th33b33 lol okay loser
This was taught in my film class today...
Your teacher is fucking cool.

Once were Warriors was amazing. Tem Morrison very underrated actor man..
Woo I didn't even realize it was the Day of the Dude but I've been on a Coen brothers binge today and yesterday.
You were too busy abiding to be anchored to something as arbitrary as a calendar ...
Len Arends ,take it easy.
Thank u.
One of my all time favorite films
Everything, from the soundtrack to the 'story' (haha), the acting, the dialogues, the atmosphere.....its a masterpiece. Im not surprised ppl cant let go of that blissful, peaceful, insanely funny vibe. It generates good emotions and feelings. You wont watch the movie and feel bad. Itll make you smile.
Thanks to you I learned about Slacker Noir; a term I haven't heard before up until now. It certainly fits this film, which in all honesty, I was never completely sure about labeling it as simply a comedy.
The dude knows that happiness is to not need anything to be happy. Peace of mind is obtained through acceptance.
In a way the Dude is a taoist. Do all things without any effort.
Ok this is officially one of my favorite Screenprism videos! I've loved The Big Lebowski since I was 15 and I just turned 30 but I've never seen an analysis video about it, let alone an excellent one like this. Well done!
Shut the fuck up dawny
I remember hearing the term, 'slacker' being used a lot back in early/mid 90's grunge era. It definitely pre-dated The Big Lebowski. By '98, it was pretty much out-dated (like the grunge scene itself).
I really liked this film when it came out. Its still a classic even after all these years. Thanks.
When I was watching The Big Lebowski the second time, the scene where Donny missed that one bowling pin made my heart sink.
Two of my all time favorite movies are Lebowski and Blade Runner- I guess neo-noir just appeals to my gen x tastes. Can't help but imagine The Dude chasing down replicants in 2019 LA lol
Lol "where's my fucking rug, man?"
Late to the party, but this is the best comment on here. The Dude as a Blade Runner, far out man
The analysis is spot on...The Dude is less subjected to the imposed anxiety of outcome that we all seem to believe in.... he has transgressed concern with future and surrendered to just what arrises...'lets see what happens' and deal with that. Its the only way to live......savour the juice of every moment by not continually resisting or rejecting the present experience. The Dude truly does abide.
The funniest thing about the Dude is that he is more nihilist than the Autobahn nihilists
He's not a Nihilist, but an absurdist.
1:28 "Careful man, there's a beverage here!".
This is the best look into this film I have ever seen. Thanks for this!! Not a lot of people take the time to appreciate the in and and outs and what have yous of this film. The dude abides!
You guys are awesome.
me at 11PM: I need to go to bed
me at 4AM: How The Big Lebowski Became a Lifestyle
This was wonderful.
As the definitive Big Lebowski lover (I do have a metal box version, it really ties my film collection together) of 30 years this video-appraisal comes as an Epiphany. You have brought me enlightenment where before there was only a shaggy-dog -story. Man.
This video made my day...why not the week....
From India....
What you miss is that Dudeism was already here, being practiced quietly everywhere , and now here is the man himself, the embodiment of all things Dude...
""Hey man, I am not Lebowski, my name is the dude!"
The world needs this now... Maybe Dudesim can be the answer for today's turmoil?
"This is not Nam, this bowling there are rules."
Watched this and movie several times..just noticed the Nixon bowling poster. Nice easter egg
Great video. 469 likes and a paltry 2 dislikes says something! The dude abides.

"Adventure, excitement, a Jedi, craves not, these things."
Yep, the Dude and i abide.
Susannah "the voice " abides. 😊
I first saw it in French and was instantly hooked.
I "liked" it before seeing it, man
Isn't it wonderful how this story by the Cohens, that was based on a Dude they met, some actors they wanted to use and wrote parts for, an insane director in hollywood everyone knew (Goodman's character), all were thrown into a cheesy 1950's Film Noir detective plot along with a lot of 70's drug culture influence and it became this masterpiece that hangs together and presents a cohesive film, even though it has no earthly reason for doing so?
The dude acts in the same honest "unfiltered" way, no matter the person who is in front of him (social status, gender...)
He doesn't care about the social conventions/protocol.
I think that in a world with people becoming too conditionned, superficial and stressed, the "unidentifyed object" side of this movie and its rebel spirit (even by just being ourselves in daily life) contributed to its success and cult status
I always wonder why this lifestyle isn´t more popular. It requires near to none efford and brings you peace. It redefines what a good life is.
Anyone watch the big Lebowski for the first time while Tripping balls and it just happened to be March 6th?
I picked to watch this movie coincidentally on march 6th, is this my calling?
I WATCHED THIS MAGNIFICENT MOVIE YESTERDAY. OMG I WAS BLOWN AWAY. IT WAS PURE MAGIC. MAN!WHAT A MOVIE.
Reminded me of the quote by Jordan Peterson: "There's nothing uglier than an old infant." :D Still, the dude abides!
July 2019
I really appreciate this break down of this movie.
Dude.
Yeah, well, that’s just like, your opinion, man.
I saw this movie 10 years ago and realized I wanted to be a "dude". Now, look at me. Unemployed, sitting in my room watching tv shows, reading comics and playing video games all day long.
take it easy man.
I came to fix the cable, but stayed for the video.
look, the dude didn't create slacker noir, shaggy and scoobie did.
Please keep doing more iconic movies 😄
I got 4 ads for Disney plus on this video, I respect the hustle
I love this film I'm part of the dudeism religion amazing video ladies the dude abides
Is it hard to be ordained as a dudeist priest? I'm thinking of joining. what do think, man.
Just print out a diploma with your name on it. Boom your in.👍
rene L,
Really? you don't have to get certified by anyone or anything like that?
