      I don’t know a ton about minimalism but I think he represents a much different lifestyle. He’s still got a bunch of hippie possessions. But I get what you mean. He’s not focused on materialism in the least. Balance and equanimity, as the video says.

    • @pinkbrando
      @pinkbrando 2 года назад +7

    • @jswets5007
      @jswets5007 2 года назад +2

      @@pinkbrando I agree. The Dude is a contentist, as in he is content with his brand, he needs no other. Just that rug that really tied the room together, and his briefcase; "no that was a separate incident." The dude certainly had nothing against materialism and was even willing to call the police to get his back, it simply was not his main motivation. He was content with "ten grand man", but he definitely was willing to do a little "work" for it.

      minimalist? that must be exhausting

  • @azuremyst2850
    @azuremyst2850 2 года назад +19

    It’s actually quite a brilliant and simplistic philosophy. We all get so caught up in worrying about meeting societal expectations. The Dude teaches us that it’s okay to say “F**k it, man” and just roll with the punches, for better or worse. Life is going to happen regardless of how much (or little) we do. It’s actually very similar to the ending with Margie and Norm in Fargo, who are doing pretty well for themselves, sans all the drama and dysfunction of many of the other characters, who only seem to care about money.

    I watched this movie the first time with my father probably back when I was say 14 or so. It was a pretty funny and wacky movie and it became one of my favorite movies. Years later I started to understand the movie and and now I realize I'm living by the Dude's philosophy day by day. While I'm actually trying to have a further education and eventually becoming a history teacher unlike the Dude. I'll always be content with my little life and enjoy the things in it from my loving family and friends, listening to and playing sweet music or just a stopping to smell the air. There's always beauty in this hard, evil world and I know I'll always find it.

    The analysis is spot on...The Dude is less subjected to the imposed anxiety of outcome that we all seem to believe in.... he has transgressed concern with future and surrendered to just what arrises...'lets see what happens' and deal with that. Its the only way to live......savour the juice of every moment by not continually resisting or rejecting the present experience. The Dude truly does abide.

    @2:20 FACT CHECK: “Abide”. The dude doesn’t have an original thought in his head. He only repeats what he hears someone else say. There’s more than a dozen times this happens in the movie. This instance, Mr. Lebowski said “I will not abide another toe”. Abide has two definitions. Mr. Lebowski used the first definition ‘not tolerate’. And the dude used the second definition ‘accept or act in accordance with’.

    Isn't it wonderful how this story by the Cohens, that was based on a Dude they met, some actors they wanted to use and wrote parts for, an insane director in hollywood everyone knew (Goodman's character), all were thrown into a cheesy 1950's Film Noir detective plot along with a lot of 70's drug culture influence and it became this masterpiece that hangs together and presents a cohesive film, even though it has no earthly reason for doing so?
    I don't know about you, but I take comfort in knowing that they are out there, just tying it all together for us.

      I've often wondered that too. Walter and Donny seem to have some kind of employment. Perhaps he was left a small trust from a loving grandma or there are some disability checks coming in. The Dude is definitely an off the grid type who doesn't need much being the bowling league and the occasional joint to be happy.

  • @billypark8032

    I love how The Dude is a man not suited to be in his place and time but one that was needed and just like the character, the movie itself was not suited to be in its place and time but one that was needed (as indicated by the lack of success it had when it was released compared to years after).

  • @reginaphalange9417
    @reginaphalange9417 5 лет назад +3

    I think that besides the plot, acting and humor, the movie is about anticonformism and not taking some superficial aspects seriously. The dude acts in the same honest "unfiltered" way, no matter the person who is in front of him (social status, gender...)
    He doesn't care about the social conventions/protocol.
    I think that in a world with people becoming too conditionned, superficial and stressed, the "unidentifyed object" side of this movie and its rebel spirit (even by just being ourselves in daily life) contributed to its success and cult status

    July 2019
    I really appreciate this break down of this movie.
    I watched this movie some time ago because I am a fan of the Coen brothers- Raising Arizona was the movie that made them (Coen brothers) stand out in my brain. There is something in the Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona that appeals to me. Both of these movies are so deeply planted into their own identity, making no excuses and unapologetically being what they are. I know now that the Polish culture has a strong influence here in both movies. I learned this because I used to work for a Polish man named Kaminiski and he loved this movie The Big Lebowski. This was always facinating to me how he could identify with a movie that barely identifies itself as being Polish- as far as I know- but Mr. Kaminski barely asserted himself as bing Polish, beyond his last name and loving this movie. But how would I know anything about the Polish identity? I barely know anything about my own culture as an african american man from the ghetto streets of Cleveland Ohio...
    I never knew how much the Dude and I had in common- based on what you have enumerated herein this video; I'm a black version of the Dude. I have absolutely no desire to be ambitious based on the established concept of success and achievement- currently as I type these words I am in my underware and a t-shirt. I spend most of my days watching youtube videos about movies because I love movies and I love to write. I barely eat because I have no money because I hardly work. I have just enough to live off of. My main goal in life is to write and day dream everyday, sometimes I'll critique a movie or scroll around on Reddit for stories and fan theories.
    Some time ago I realized how much I wanted to be like the Coen brothers. They wrote stories based on their identity as Polish white men from the urban sector of america. They don't have to make up excuses as to why their stories are so deeply rooted into their identity and culture, nor do they have to apologize for this either. I wanna do that.
    Black folks (where I'm from) know little to nothing about this movie The Big Lebowski. To us this movie does not resonate as a cult classic. It simply does not hit home with us on a cultural level, now, this may not be the case with more "evolved" blacks who have assimilated more into the european culture and identity of america but most common, urban afriacan americans from the ghetto won't know much about this movie at all- what does that say about me?
    I'm just a ghetto child who was neglected in my youth to the point where I turned to television and movies while my parents were absentee. So I developed a love for movies and writing stories.
    I think the one thing that I lack that the Dude embodies his aversion to violance and how he utterly rejects any violent resolutions to most situations. Well, I don't smoke as much weed as the Dude does- I don't smoke weed at all. I don't drink, I don't do any drugs of any sort so I am prone to be a bit more open to expressing violence. This is a byproduce of my enviroment.
    I didn't really enjoy this movie. It was not very memorable to me. I did however enjoy Raising Arizona- it was one of the funnest and heartwarming movies I'd watched as a kid. I think I liked it because it was simple story and it was told in a very carefree kinda way, a little like Pulp Fiction, stories that are easily told are the ones that you believe the most. I've heard my fair share of stories from the time I spent in prison. There is a spontaneity to a really good, simple (and true) story that I always could take notice of.
    I guess I didn't really enjoy the Big Lebowski because there was nothing special about a dude who lives pretty much the same way I live- hes in his PJs most of the day, smoking weed, doing a whole lot of nothing plus sleeping with wealthy white women from time to time, oh, plus he bowls with a couple idiots pretty frequently: if you change a few things around, that is pretty much my life too. The movie was uneventful to me. Dull and boring, I don't even remember how it ended. I know he got to sleep with that rich white lady. I don't recall what happened with those Swedish dudes or the Big Lebowski. It was just an odd boring movie to me. I guess I'd better watch it again.
