I am 1:30 into the video and it's already great. I know that you'll cover what I want to know, but you didn't spend the first ten minutes explaining that I should do the thing that I was searching to do. Now, on with the rest of the video.
I was talking to my singer about talkback mic options earlier today, and then later I thought “I bet Scott has a video about this”. As usual, you never disappoint! Thanks for the info!!
I purchased a ProCo Panic Button to setup my microphone for talkback with my QSC TM16. The great thing about the Panic Button is it has 4 switches inside that let it be customized to latch or temporary when the footswitch is depressed. It works well!!!
I added garage door openers ($12.00 on Amazon) to several Panic Buttons to make wireless talkback switching. I took old keyboard sustain pedals and installed N.O. momentary pushbutton switches inside. I took the guts out of the transmitter, unsoldered the tiny keyfob switch and wired the footswitch in where the old switch was. It fit in the footpedal housing. Then i mounted the receiver to the side of the Panic Button, tapped off the 9vdc power, and paralleled the footswitch on the Panic Button. The singer can either step on the pedal or press a keyfob button if he is away from the foot switch. I have had several working for years now. The risk is possibly damaging the Panic Button.
I’m glad I’m not the only one obsessed with a clean stage lol, I now control my pedalboard and tracks with an MC6 Pro (with a power bank and a WIDI Jack). You blew my mind with your idea to switch talkback channels with midi, I’m totally going to try that!
Really useful real-world insights, as usual. One thought, if you don't have the luxury of a dedicated mixer channel for the talkback mic (eg X-air series mixers etc) you could maybe use the Midi method to cut the main vocal mic from LR bus, so you can then talk directly to your band (who all have at least some lead vocal in their in-ear mixes!) - you won't get the different EQ that you mention, but at least you don't need a dedicated channel.
Thanks Scott! I have this pedal to split the mic and it works really well (includes an LED so that you know what channel you are on)...and the price is great - but you order from Australia so it takes about 6 weeks to arrive.... Loopi microphone A/B switch pedal (reverb has them for $53 + shipping).
Very good job. I love your channel. There is one more option to mute the talkback mic: use a GATE to it,if you have digital console and make it OPEN at a specific volume level. We use it all the time at our live gigs
Nice video as usual Scott. We use a separated TB mic for our beerfest gigs for the drummer and bass player. I use a little pedal board which has a spark mini booster, an EQ mini pedal for cutting the bass freqs and an ABY minipedal switcher. The mic is connected to that board and the ouput goes directly to a wired in ear Behringer P2 for the drummer. The other output of the ABY is empty making it work as an onn off switch, it works very good! After watching your video I will try the midi setup next time! I have to get a second widi and a midi baby 3. Awesome pedal, About the midi power. I guess midi always use at least 3v of power that is why those pedals need power supply. 😊 For your rack midi ports of the X32 you can use some mini male to female midi extenders. I really enjoy your tutorials! Thanks for your videos muchacho ! They are always very informative and direct to the point! Congrats!
Oh nice! Yeah the midi is great, but if something else works well, then that’s what’s important. I’ve wanted to try those adapters to see if they work. I tried one and it didn’t send the power needed to power the WIDI was the only thing
I rigged up a clever solution for this the other day. I’m using Reaper to run a click, backing tracks, and live synths. So I set up a channel in Reaper with a simple synth program that reads a simple MIDI note. The MIDI item is set up to play during each song, but not in between. Then I’m using a Omni reference mic on channel 16. And I use the MIDI synth via USB into channel 15. And I use the synth sound as a side chain on the Omni mic to activate a gate. So as long as that synth is playing a note the room mic is muted. The straight MIDI to the X32 option to mute/unmute the mics is an interesting idea to try out.
@@ScottUhlMusic I switched over to MIDI control today. I hadn’t realized it was an option until your video. :) The alt input with ducker still might be useful in some way but for now the MIDI is a little cleaner. Thanks for your awesome videos!

Nice! Glad it’s working! I actually got one of those as well. It’s a pretty cool device. It disconnects from my iPad occasionally so just a heads up. The Widi master has been super solid 👍
Hi Scott, thank you for this very good explanation of talk back and its using. You pointed something that I'm thinking since a while and I do not have any solution. I'm a dummer and I also perform some choirs. I'm thinking on a mean to cut my mike thanks to Stage Traxx 3 and midi, to avoid the drum feedback as maximum as possible. With my band, I'm the only one who is using IEM and I have my own mixer (analog one). If you know something magic... :) See you
I've had throat cancer and have no need for shouting to communicate, talkback mic is the way to go, it would be even without this challenge ;-) It looks a little funky having two mic stands/mics, one for song one for talkback, but it works!!
Amazing content on your channel! Very useful. I definitely like the hot shot option best. I'd like for everyone in the band to have that option for internal communication.
Scott - How about the Midi Captain One (as a single button, midi switch). Doesn't use batteries though... still needs power. Takes a barrel jack for this one. They also have a Duo model... but still the same power issue. I've seen some "build your own circuits" for single midi buttons... then you can build them to use batteries... but it's definitely a DIY approach.
Thanks for the small tips! 🤣 I too enjoy a clean stage! I can't tell you how often I or someone else has tripped over a cord and taken out mics, stands or instruments, usually at the worst possible moment!
On the topic of making the midi baby battery powered, what about using one of the iPad apps you’ve covered to send the midi commands instead? Might not be very practical though if you need a mixing app and backing track app running simultaneously, unless it’s possible to have them all open side by side.
I actually just found the obvious adapter cable for a 9v battery haha so it works now. I did try the app, but definitely a foot controller works better. But the app would definitely work as well!
Hi Scott, thanks for this useful video (as always! ;-)) that's ok for the Band Leader to talk to musicians during shows... but what about setting ambiant mics in rehearsal not to have to take in-ear off each time we want to talk to each others ? I've seen your other video with integrated mics ear buds but that's not accessible for me right now... Do you have an advice?
Thanks! And yeah, having microphones setup for rehearsals is a huge help. I just did that at a rehearsal last night, it was great! Kept my ears in the whole time and just talked to each other with our mics 🤘
8:09 I got this radial switch last week and tried to use it at an event on weekend but it made a very loud pop noise every time it gets back to main channel (ch1). Just saying this for all the people to have this in mind because it will happen and you need to have this in mind.
This is amazing and useful information. I bought the radial hotshot md1 and every time I step on the switch there’s a loud pop. I’ve installed it correctly. Do you know how I can fix that? We use an analog console.
Yeah we had that problem like twice when we used it… really odd. It only happened at those shows no, not other shows. I’m not really sure why it does that.
Hi Scott, thank you so much for this video. At my church I sing lead while leading the worship team, and I coordinate with the musicians for the flow of the set. They are sometimes I wish I could give cues to the musicians only while leading and this has helped to start in the right direction. Only thing is, I’m not usually stationary on stage, so the toggle peddle seems great, but don’t know how I would manage. Just yesterday, before this video, I was thinking of attaching a wireless lapel mic to my shirt as a talkback and sing with the wireless handheld for the house. Would that be a good option or would the sound be too muddy for the musicians?
That could work too… It will just always be going to their ears and might not be very clear. It’s worth a try, but I am 50/50 if that would work. The Axient Digital has a mic switch that allows you to push a button on the mic to switch the output to a second output, but that’s seriously like a $10k system. I wish someone else would figure out a way to do that for much cheaper. There would be a market for it
Scott I have a question unrelated to the video. Will I be okay having three wireless IEM’s on a Shure PA411 combiner and a Sennheiser g4 935 wireless mic in the same rack?
I think you missed a very effective method: you post a killswitch after the splitter to interrupt the front-of-house signal. This way you only hear the signal on the IEM's while holding the switch. I love your channel
Please help, how can i do that...my singer has one mic, and i want to give him guitar footswitch..and when he steps on it, band hears him in iem..when he steps off..he unmute his mic...we have behringer x32...please help
@@rokuponoc you need a device which you install after the splitter in the front-of-house signal path of your singer. This device must have the ability to interrupt the signal via footswitch. Do you know if the Helix can send multiple cc commands on a single foot switch press? I’d love a single foot switch toggle mute for both main vocal channel and talk back channel. ❤
Scott, my church use Roland m480 mixing console, i tried your first easy method where you bring down the fader of the for the main output (completely off) and bring up the sound level of the in ear monitors but the audio sound didn't come. I couldnt hear the sound in the in ear monitors. The only time you will the audio sound in the in ear monitor was when i had to turn up the channel's fader for the main outs. Any ideas please. Many thanks
Scott, were using a TB mic in the drum cage. We're switching to a less sensitive mic like the sennheise e835. We will def have to position it correctly and then gate it, but what else could we do to ensure it doesn't pick up any of the other mics. It was bleeding pretty heavily. ha! Or how would you approach this?
Yeah that’s a tough one. A super cardioid mic is the best option. I love my Nexadyne by Shure. But the best thing would be to have a mute switch so it’s not always on
@ I actually went back to my school resources (different mics) and super cardiod is best option with a mute switch from watching your video! Thank you! We’ll set that up!!
Hey man! We’re gonna do method 3. I won’t need to go output B into house correct? Just use output A into the channel we ultimately route to in ears. Which we’re using direct out on the X32. I’ve set Talk backs and pastor mic on that bus to all be on channel 16 of the Behringer P16. Asking to save time but I would eventually figure it out. Thanks for what you do!
Scott do,you have a video for someone who wants to say learn how to do a simple recording for you tube ect just to know how to post a simple video of playing
Crazy was just thinking about this yesterday ... you read my mind LOL Great Info as always. Hey did you do the draw for the Stage Traxx winners by any chance ?
@@InpersonaVyvo A lot of people have been asking that... maybe I need to just do the drawing as a post on my page. I think more people see that than the do the stories. I'll probably do that next time!
I personally don’t. I played one show where we had one and it was nice, but I personally didn’t find it completely necessary. Although most bands I play in have multiple singers so there is quite a bit of room noise let in already
Yeah with the midi method it’s mostly good for when you run your own sound. If I’m running sound, I use the 5th method. If we have a dedicated FOH sound guy and we use my splitter, I just use the first method 🤘
Is there any reason method 4 couldn't work with all 4 vocal mics on stage with an x32? For a group talkback, any of us could chime in. Since we have a ton of virtual channels open, we could mute the 4 live channels going to and engage the 4 linked monitor only channels. Right?
Oh nice! I didn’t know that. Can you control it with midi? Although, I don’t want to mute everything, we almost always talkback during a song to change what comes next though
I have easy access to MixingStation on stage so I can push the Talk button that turns bright red, letting me know it isn't going to FOH.😊 I use a trick similar trick to use one channel for click (USB input for us) and talkback (old wireless mic). It toggles between USB and analog in.
I've never used this system before.. sounds great... and love the added humour about F*$&% soundguy being an A@#$%@&.. lol. .. hilarious.. and the small tip.. lol.. had lots mooostakes where guys thought they were whispering to each other on stage and the mic picked up the voices.. that was hilarious too.. lol.
Lol yeah! I had a friend of mine who switched to a headset mic… and one of his first shows he leaned over (assuming it was away from the mic from years of using a handheld on a mic stand) and said “check out the rack on the mom that just walked in” and said it completely loud into the headset mic lol.
I bought a cheap 4 channel mixer AND 4 lekato ms-1 recievers with one transmiter... that way our talkback system Is totally independent to our main mixer... we decided to do It that way cause we play at diferent venues AND not all the Time the audio engineer Is open to help us with our talk Back setup
That’s true, although because I use the Midas splitter here: ruclips.net/video/vhKOkp4Ives/видео.htmlsi=sVRi9MXKdjkbpsGK so it actually does work with that 🤘
Good info, Scott. Do you have any suggestions/options for bi-directional wireless comms with the sound person? My sound person mixes wirelessly via a tablet, and doesn't want to carry a large wireless mic like Phenyx units you've reviewed. Also, I'd like to be able to communicate with her via the on-stage talk-back mic. For instance: Sound person: "This guy next to me wants to hear 'Freebird'." Me: "How badly does he want to hear it?" Sound person: "$200 badly." Me: "Tell him it's coming up next!"
Hahahahah the ONLY time to play free bird :) and I don’t have much knowledge over the comm mic stuff at all, so I’m not sure. But most of them have a mute switch on the transmitter, so I would imagine almost all of them should work?
Awesome info!! Have you tried the M-Vave chocolate wireless foot controller on temu? Just curious if it’ll work as a midi options on mixing station 🤔 share.temu.com/UJZIJKQ0sAA
I use that to control stage Traxx and it works great! I haven’t used it with mixing station though. I haven’t used midi with mixing station actually so I’m not sure
@@ScottUhlMusic Thank you for your quick response! Great to know it worked well for you. I’m usually doing sound and playing at the same time and was thinking if it were possible to use one foot switch as a tap tempo for delay time, and possibly another switch as a talk back switcher?

@@ScottUhlMusic thanks Scott! I watched about 10 of your videos last night, super high quality, great explanations! Thanks for all the great content!
Do you know if the Helix can send multiple cc commands on a single foot switch press? I’d love a single foot switch toggle mute for both main vocal channel and talk back channel. ❤
Yup it can 👍
Scott, my church use Roland m480 mixing console, i tried your first easy method where you bring down the fader of the for the main output (completely off) and bring up the sound level of the in ear monitors but the audio sound didn't come. I couldnt hear the sound in the in ear monitors. The only time you will the audio sound in the in ear monitor was when i had to turn up the channel's fader for the main outs. Any ideas please. Many thanks
Yeah make sure it’s set to pre-fader 👍 I am almost positive that’s why
For video recording? No not really :/ sorry
Great video!
Thanks!
Crazy was just thinking about this yesterday ... you read my mind LOL Great Info as always.
Hey did you do the draw for the Stage Traxx winners by any chance ?
He did. In fact, I'm one of the winners. Thanks to Scott and Peter. ❤
Thanks for watching! :) and yes, I did the drawing on my stories 🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic how do I watch stories ??
@@InpersonaVyvo A lot of people have been asking that... maybe I need to just do the drawing as a post on my page. I think more people see that than the do the stories. I'll probably do that next time!
@@InpersonaVyvo I do also respond to the comment individually as well.
Hey Scott, thanks for your content!
Do you use crowd mics to get more connected to the audience? Maybe another content idea? :D
Cheers!
I personally don’t. I played one show where we had one and it was nice, but I personally didn’t find it completely necessary. Although most bands I play in have multiple singers so there is quite a bit of room noise let in already
In order to use the midi method i assume that you cannot use the mic splitter right ? because the mute function wont work ?
Yeah with the midi method it’s mostly good for when you run your own sound. If I’m running sound, I use the 5th method. If we have a dedicated FOH sound guy and we use my splitter, I just use the first method 🤘
Is there any reason method 4 couldn't work with all 4 vocal mics on stage with an x32? For a group talkback, any of us could chime in. Since we have a ton of virtual channels open, we could mute the 4 live channels going to and engage the 4 linked monitor only channels. Right?
Yup, you could do that 👍
Can i implementing the midi setup for my xair16? How is the midi setup in the mixing station app?
You can do it on the xair yes 👍 the behringer xair just automatically receives midi commands without having to enable it like on the 32
With Mixing Station, you can make a momentary button that turns LR off so you can talkback.
@@ScottUhlMusic 😂😂😂
I bought a cheap 4 channel mixer AND 4 lekato ms-1 recievers with one transmiter...
that way our talkback system Is totally independent to our main mixer...
we decided to do It that way cause we play at diferent venues AND not all the Time the audio engineer Is open to help us with our talk Back setup
Nice!
Using MIDI to mute the channels is genius. The only thing is, it wouldn’t affect the FOH split right?
That’s true, although because I use the Midas splitter here: ruclips.net/video/vhKOkp4Ives/видео.htmlsi=sVRi9MXKdjkbpsGK so it actually does work with that 🤘
Good info, Scott. Do you have any suggestions/options for bi-directional wireless comms with the sound person?
My sound person mixes wirelessly via a tablet, and doesn't want to carry a large wireless mic like Phenyx units you've reviewed. Also, I'd like to be able to communicate with her via the on-stage talk-back mic. For instance:
Sound person: "This guy next to me wants to hear 'Freebird'."
Me: "How badly does he want to hear it?"
Sound person: "$200 badly."
Me: "Tell him it's coming up next!"
Hahahahah the ONLY time to play free bird :) and I don’t have much knowledge over the comm mic stuff at all, so I’m not sure. But most of them have a mute switch on the transmitter, so I would imagine almost all of them should work?
Can this be done on an analogues system?
Yes, definitely 👍
I wish I woulda subscribed to your channel years ago 🙇🏽♂️
🙏🙏🙏
Hey can you run this on an aux
You can run the talkback mic into whichever input on your mixer, just as long as the musicians can hear it and not the crowd 👍
which one is cheaper??
You can use a $20 mic for this
2 tips at the end 👍. That's what she said 😅😂
😅😅😅
Awesome info!! Have you tried the M-Vave chocolate wireless foot controller on temu? Just curious if it’ll work as a midi options on mixing station 🤔
share.temu.com/UJZIJKQ0sAA
I use that to control stage Traxx and it works great! I haven’t used it with mixing station though. I haven’t used midi with mixing station actually so I’m not sure
@@ScottUhlMusic Thank you for your quick response! Great to know it worked well for you. I’m usually doing sound and playing at the same time and was thinking if it were possible to use one foot switch as a tap tempo for delay time, and possibly another switch as a talk back switcher?
Always is the sound guy's fault.... 😢
😂😂
that proximity sensor is a good idea but the implementation is a scam and a half. 250 bucks for basically a component that every smartphone has and is dirt cheap??? thieves
It does seem a bit high priced, but might be worth it!
Excellent!
Great video!
Thank you!
