In-ears for everyone and a talkback mic was a GAME CHANGER for our band. Night and day for calling audibles on the fly, which we do at every single show. We watched dozens of your videos to get our 300-song Ableton file going. Thanks for all you do!!

Thank you for talking about such an important topic! For years, worship teams in our church use hand signals. We're calling it "finger system" 😅 It works like this: for the first section of the song (usually Verse)- you show ☝🏻. Second section (Pre-Chorus or Chorus) - ✌🏻. Third section - bridge and so on. There were very few songs with more than four different parts. Also, a pinkie means Instrumental. And zero 👌🏻 (more like OK, tbh) is the signal for finishing the song. When my friend and I started our own worship team, we really wanted to get rid of these signs because we thought (and still do) that they look very silly on stage. In particular, because lead vocalist is the one who's doing that and they are always visible to congregation. Before the pandemic, there were no video recording or stream of services in this church and, in general, the culture sounds like: during a prayer meeting you shouldn't be unfocused and look too much at the musicians. But nevertheless, me and my team members really wanted to stop using that. So we started rehearsing songs with particular structure. Usually as it is in the reference song. That way we always knew how many times, for example, the chorus should be repeated before we move on to the next verse or bridge. Sometimes vocalist would still use the same gesture you demonstrated, indicating a repeat of current section. However, due to the specifics of the prayer style in this church, we understood that we still need flexibility. So recently I got this idea to use TouchOSC for this. So I'm a keyboard player, in my Ableton Live project I have audio clips for indication of each section of a song as well as song titles. The vocalist has a phone/tablet with a grid of buttons they can press to play these clips. This way we have a flexible audio guide. Of course, this is only possible because we play with in-ear monitors. We haven't tried using TouchOSC in this way yet, but I suspect that vocalist pressing some buttons on their phone might look even funnier than one making hand signals. However, if the phone/tablet will just lie nearby on the note stand (which is always there, where our vocalists are 😄), it can be done inconspicuously, so that the audience doesn't pay attention to it. Also I have concerns about the reliability of using TouchOSC on stage. However, I can't wait to finally try it out! Ideally, I really want us to finally start playing with playbacks always (we're still on the way to that, which is why your videos are so helpful for me), then the Set project will have a guide that will voice the next section of the song or the title of the next song. But there's still one problem: in a situation where vocalist would use their hand to signal "repeat this section", I'd unmute the "Repeat" track and Ableton would go to the previous marker, BUT at the same time in our in-ears everyone will hear the name of the next section of the song, because that audio guide clip is in the last bar, 4 measures before next section start. So, if one of the musicians doesn't see signals of the vocalist, they will hear the guide voicing the next part, and won't know that we are going to repeat the part that we're playing now. I'm still figuring out how to solve this problem and would appreciate your advice 🙌🏻 Sorry for a very long comment, I hope my thoughts make some sense to you and might be interesting to somebody 🙂
