One ministry I worked with for a couple years, the worship leader was also the MD. He used the HotShot to talk to the band, and because the entire band really knew the Number System to the point of chords within a key, he could call out spontaneous chord progressions through the Number System, and we would write original music and lyrics from the stage for 2 hours straight.
Long-time follower here... I think you boys have identified a need for an online MD course. I'm a keys player who has been asked to MD for my big church. First time we've had an MD, so it's brand new (for me and the band). I'm sure are others in the same boat. Looking forward to more content like this!
You should make a video something along the lines of “The three levels of MD’ing.” This video was like what is MD’ing. The next could be how to MD. Knowing when it can be to much, things like that.
I think what Sam is referring to is more of a step by step on “how to” actually MD. Like a here’s step one, behind the scenes of a service for a beginner who is timid and not exactly sure how to start. (Example: opening up the service, going through a whole song but in detail, transitions, what works behind speaking engagements, etc..) I guess more practical information if that makes sense. This video is amazing though! Just trying to clarify these things because there are a lot of people who are confused who are going with the flow and trying to take on the role of an MD but not sure if they are doing it right. I’ve been in that boat before (no longer doing that at the moment) and it can be stressful because if you are lacking or doing too much the band can get a little angry and ticked off at you at times. Anyways sorry for the book, this would be cool to cover!
Hi, good day!!!! Been watching your videos lately. I feel blessed and I really learned a lot. I play E.Guitar at my local church and at some point, I have been assigned to act as an MD but the only difference is that since we're a local church here in our city, we don't use in-ear monitors and so when we perform on a Sunday service, the worship leader does all the leading. If possible, can you make a video regarding small churches should be using in-ear monitors? And how can small churches' worship team improve leading worship? I hope to hear from you soon. I really learned a lot from your videos and content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas on leading Worship. God Bless!!!!
I've actually used a talk back mic to our drummer and our sound tech on stage, next to my vocal mic. That worked beautifully. Not using it now, since we had a new drum booth built and it needs to be wired. But it works great unless you have that little system set up. I also don't use in-ears currently, although I have in the past.
Great video. Explains a lot. Because I was one of the questions or statement saying about the direction and leading of the Holy Spirit. Thanks for clearing that up.
Thank you Brian and Bradford for the great and useful information! 🙏 I’ve been hesitant at becoming an MD at my church but this definitely added some much needed insight
Do professional bands use MD's when they are live like Metallica or Disturbed? or is this something that was conceived only for the live worship space? Like who thought of this technique?
I don’t believe bands like Metallica, Disturbed, etc. would use an MD for a couple reasons. Musicians in those bands wrote their songs and know exactly how to play them and they very rarely are changing keys on the fly, like worship music. Also, an MD is most helpful for the “flow”. Rock bands don’t usually flow to and from every song, like worship music, so there isn’t a need for someone to direct them from one song to the other, making sure they’re playing the correct transition chords, etc. I suppose a band could have an MD but I just don’t see the benefit it would add. EDIT: I’m no pro musician and the above is strictly an opinion and I could very well be wrong.
We tried to use the hotshot switcher. It had a pop each time a we switched the mic. We cut the phantom power, and replaced the xlr cables. Great idea but not sure what we did wrong
My apologies. I just got curious. Is it okay for song leaders to have tattoos? Why are there song leaders having tattoos in their arms? Do they have it before they got involved in the Music Team or after? 🤔
Hey i have a question, I play e-guitar at my church (we dont use tracks) and we are planing to use an MD. How do I het started? We use In-ear monitoring and our leaders often use Talkback to adress stuff but we try and take pressure off the leaders and have a dedicated person doing the job. Personally i sometimes struggle with my parts and dont have the clearness to listen to the band as a whole. greetings from Germany :P
hey im 15 years old and i am becoming the "music director" for our youth worship services and i wanted some tips on how i can be a leader to the other band members that are my age and up
Lead by example, be humble, listen to all sorts of music and learn a few things about the instruments your band mates play to expand your musical imagination and communication
How would you guys do it when you first started? Obviously now you have experience, but how was it when both of you had just started out with no experience? (I’m talking about Playing in church as a band or your first time being in a band)
Is there any chance that you will provide samples with clues that you use in click track to download ? The spoken words ' one '' two '' ready '' chorus' verse 'etc. ? :) Greetings from Poland !!
Hey Guys, thanks for the vid, I bought that foot switch but I get a pop when it switches, I think it's because I'm using mics with Phantom power. Do you have a recommendation for a switch that can handle phantom?
I was looking for Something like you used to mute the mic. My stage is to loud and I Would like to foot mute the mic. Small church. We use in ear and everything but the drum are to loud and get into the talk back mic and Distort everything. Any pedal that I could use? Help pls
I think that having an MD in your ear ruins worship. As a musician, you should be prepared to play your part properly, and when you are on the stage, you worship, knowing your part. Worship is supposed to be worship, NOT a production, and absolutely NOT a concert. Granted, if there is an issue, etc., then yes there should be an in ear for an MD to cut in and say something, but as a musician you should know your transitions and where they come. As a musician, this would completely distract me from actually making the music and enjoying it, as God intended it to be.
there are 6 other days to enjoy personal worship , sunday is for the rest of the congregation to be led into worship. If our worship is only on sundays, we have a problem
@@ocbfdog agreed. it takes time but both having your musicians know their parts before hand, and having an M.D will further solidify transitions and sections that could lead to error. It's about keeping communication up, and errors to a minimum

That's insane dude what an honor it must've been to be a part of something so special. Have a blessed day
what is a HotShot

The “meet my eyeline Jim!” had me rolling
We cannot pass up an opportunity to throw in an office or Seinfeld reference 😂
Brian, thanks for always remembering us small churches and bands. 😅

Too much. way too much and way way too much
Brian and Bradford, you guys are fantastic! Thanks so much for all the free helpful stuff you put out 🙏
2:43 I use it to turn on and off vocal harmonizer. Our stage is small and directions are given directly
I love this video. The advice and band/organization structuring you guys are doing here is very well done.

Very informative and helpful. Thanks. ❤
when i saw the thumbnail i thought it said 'Trips to McD's' and i was intrigued. New series maybe?
Thank you both! This was very helpful 👌🏻
“Meet my eyeline Jim!”😂😂
Good stuff right there!
Wow!! This production is massive!! Crazy budget. How many people are there on "any given Sunday "

I think the OG MD’s were called conductors ;)
Depends on the band, but several do, yes.
TV bands, Award shows, Grand Ole Opry all have them. I’ve done it live in a cover band for an inexperienced or fill in drummer or something.

Shoutout to the lizard behind the downspout at 9:36
Amazing video! can you share please when I can get the pedal to make the talkback mic? Thank you very much 🙏🏼
This really helps!
Thanks for this man
So good!
Is there a video on the “hot shot” pedal? And a link to get one?
How can I determine or learn progressions that work consistently?
What you are telling me you have to practice spontaneous moments? 😉😉
My apologies.
I just got curious.

Thank you guys! What about a wireless mic set up? Is it possible to run a hot shot or A/B pedal with a wireless mic?

Multitracks.com has a free guide folder which you can download off their website that has all of that.

Checkout the the Pro-Co Panic button, or the Sevenfifty1 passive talkback button.

@@worshiptutorials rewatched the video and understand perfectly. I’m buying it as soon as possible 🤩🤩🤩. It will make my life a lot easier
EVERY BODY PAY ATTENTION TO 6:40
What do you call that switcher pedal, for MD and Vocal?
This particular one is the RADIAL Hotshot - there are 2 models (one has +48v and the other does not)
👍👍👍
It looked like Cody carnes in the thumbnail
Meet my eyeline Jim 😂
💯
Excuse me. but the Spirit doesn`t move spontaneous days before the service. lol
