This video reads like a "what JDM sports cars are popular to hate on" compilation. Most of these issues are way overblown. Hell, half the engines on here are on here for early production faults that ended up getting fixed, by that logic, let's throw the k24 and early VQ35 and VQ40's on here for early production timing chain issues.
And the subarus most affected by head gasket issues were early NON-TURBO EJ25's. Most of the head gasket and ring land issues reported were by people who got their subaru and immediately plugged in an access port to up the boost without supporting mods. Keep the power near stock and it'll generally treat you well, or be prepared to spend big bucks on forged internals, front mount intercoolers, improved oiling, baffled oil pan, and a REALLY good tune. There isn't a middle ground there
You want bad japanese engines? Nissan ZD30, Subaru EE20, arguably the current Honda L15, Mazda MZR (if ypu want to count it as japanese), plenty of mitsubishi engines, to name a few

I'm a daily driver for 8 1/2 years of an RX-8. They are super reliable IF you get a Series II (2009-2011) with its improved oil ports (3 versus just 2) and it's electronic OMP system. Plus, almost all of the other problems with the Series I were solved - better clutch pedal, faster starter motor, more reliable electric steering, better cat, etc. The only missing upgrade that I did was put more robust coils in it.

I knew the Renesis would be here. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
Everything mentioned can happen to any engine. Over boost it and it pops, carbon build up makes piston rings fail too, not enough fuel causes detonation.
Things like the oil metering pump failing with no cel to warn you causing oil starvation, needing to premix, early and often oil changes, eating spark plugs and coils, plugging up cats due to premixing, etc are more unique aspects of ownership.

Every engine on the list with "sludge build up" is neglected from owners failing to change the oil in a timely manner. Even the manufacturers recommended oil change intervals aren't enough. 2500 - 3000 miles, you should be changing your oil, especially if you're dogging it

@@stevef3521 I’m glad you commented, I actually lost this video 😂
But basically, I took my car into the Toyota dealership in Antioch for the recall. On a Wednesday morning I arrived at the service center and talked to one of the people, I was explaining to them what the defect was when they exchange the valve springs. What I read was that the technicians over use the sealant on the motor which causes the oil to not flow through correctly when they reassemble it. But they do test drive before they give it back.
I also asked if I can take it to Subaru because they are the ones who deals with boxer engines. Short story No, it was Toyotas recall, not Subaru even though they make the engines.
So 3 days go by and I received a call and picked up my car, I inspected it first before I left noticing that they changed the oil and can still hear the same ticking sound which is normal. Anyways another month goes by and the engine is still running strong at 87k miles with no check engine lights 👍
Had to explain as much as I could so you could feel better about it😁

You are not gonna get a 30k JDM car drop 15k in mods for it and dominate ALL super cars. The fast and furious movie sold that lie so well that people actually started to believe that it was possible to do that and now everyone believes ALL JDM cars are the gold standard of tuner cars based on one cool looking racing lie.
