- I really needed to test my new Arriflex, so I thought, what better way to do that than with an old Georg Jensen 24 FPS sync motor I had lying around. Let's see just how well (or not) it performs.

I love how rock solid the footage is, no perf wavering, no jittery frame line. Literally PERFECT. The flickering light sucks tho lol.
Yes, I love the stability you get with a registration pin camera. That light flicker is pretty annoying, and there's no doubt it has to do with my processing and the age/storage of this film. I've processed a ton in 50' lengths but I'm still pretty new to 100'. It's a whole new beast and best to start with the chemicals in the tank already as it takes quite a while to fill through the top. I think I'm going to try a whole new workflow on the next roll.
Yes please! A narrative film shot with this beautiful ARRI 16S. Looking forward to this! PS your daughter is a sweetie!
Thanks so much!! I can't wait to get this thing rolling!
@@Filmboy24 pun intended
Your audio sync is better that a RUclips Stream very tight,
Thank you, Bart!!
Super cool! It's crazy how much actual work is involved for you to simply cut to the film footage! Thanks for taking the time
Thanks so much!!
@Filmboy24, this camera screen it remind me the 60s. I just wish that you come to Maryland and my 1960s camera operator because We making a show in Maryland and Delaware about the 1967. And we set design in Delaware that what it look like back then. I love your 16mm camera. And this is the old days like I watch the old TV shows and movies
Thanks, Shamar, best of luck with your project!!
Your sync is spot-on, Mike. Great job. You can barely hear the camera in the background. I gotta believe noise reduction in Audition would get rid of that. Piper is adorable!
Thanks so much Frank!! I tell her about everyone that's mentioned her.
Yes, I believe you're right, a little touch up and it'd probably all be gone. For reference, the camera was about 5' - 6' away from me. I really believe that with the right shotgun mic, towel over the camera, distance from the subject and a little help in Audition, it's definitely possible.
I have a 1970 Minolta autopak-8 super 8 camera for Christmas about 3 years ago
That sync'd up well. The Arri is a nice camera.
Great! Love that it synced perfectly!
Thanks, Grant!!
Love the camera. The sync tests turned out very nicely, love the look of the old 500T.
Thanks, Cecil! There really is no match for the good old fashioned look of film!!
Awesome video, I think I found my dream camera!
Such awesome cameras!!
That is one awesome looking movie camera no kidding
What is a darn nice looking camera
Awesome video and channel, so cool to see a YT video shot on film
Thank you so much, Blake! I really appreciate it!!
thanks for the video keep making more content arri-s
Thank you for watching!
Came out great and congrats on the new camera. Cute cameo by your daughter too 😊
Thanks so much, Dave!!
Nice job..wild color, good sync
Thanks, Pop!!
Super impressed am I, too. Thanks a lot for this:_)
Thanks, gtelefon!!
I’ve always been curious about those...I’ve shot on Arri SR2’s and 3’s and the tank...the BL. In film school we shot mostly on the CP16. Love that camera.
I would love to shoot on an SR, I have a couple of friends that have but I never quite got there :(
I have a CP-16 and I really like it, nice and quiet but I wish they took 100' loads (other than in the magazine).
You are spot on, that 16BL is an absolute tank, but you have to admit, it's a beautiful camera!!
Thanks for watching!!
This 16S looks sooooo new 😱👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I own a new one #19739. Interested?
You are correct even at the 8:30 Mark you can definitely hear it running.
I forgot to tell you my name is Keith
Nice ass camera! You're a star.
Hahaha!!
Is this the first youtube vlog shot on film? That sync is perfect, break a leg on the feature. Been wanting to do the same actually so i’ll be watching your progress eagerly👍👍👍
LOL, thanks Laume, not sure if it's the first but it's definitely the goofiest :)
Filmboy24 It was a lot of fun, also didn’t even realize it was this old when youtube suggested it to me lol. Do you have social media or email?
@@laumeconroy4761, I'm so lame, I do have an Instagram (@filmboy24) but I rarely update it. I can always be reached by email at filmboy24@gmail.com.
Yep at the
7:25 mark it is pretty loud.
Beautiful looking camera.
I received the 8mms and one Fujica super 8 sound and I can't wait to get a few 16 and super 16mms, mainly Arri, Bolex and K2.
The Bolex K2 I got doesnt seem to work, ive tried the shutter modes and all buttons and it wont wind further. Looks like its all wound but the shutter wont move the motor. Any ideas?
I changed the lock button from blocked to single frame and regular, but nothing.
by the way, how come you are getting light leaks? Was it not sealed if you were just testing or is that some other reason? I mean if the flashing is light leaks
Thank you!! Happy filming!
Great video love some Arri 16mm camera. How much are those cameras now a days? ... Out of topic but have you ever used the Nizo S30 any tips on focusing with aerial focusing system and the lack of a split image system ?
Thanks Jaro!! I absolutely love Arriflex gear. If you keep your eyes open, you will eventually find these in great condition for sub $2K (which is what I did). Well worth it!!
@@Filmboy24 thats nice those cameras are great! I myself shoot in non reflex Bolex...
@@GBJJ072, I love the H16 cameras as well, I have a couple of them. They are very well built and if taken care of, will run forever. Have fun with it!!
Hi Piper
Your daughter is a little sweetie
Thanks, Keith!!
@@Filmboy24 Maybe she can start staring in your films hahahah.
Question: can you use this audio syncer for a Bell and Howell Filmo 240 16mm single perf film camera as well or is there another audio syncer you can get for that film camera?
Unfortunately, there really isn't any sync motors that I know of for that camera. Syncing sound with one of those cameras is possible, but it would be quite tedious. I've done videos on doing it with non-sync cameras. Time consuming but possible.
Mike, what’s your opinion on the Beaulieu R16s? I think I can get one of those for the fraction of the cost of some of these other 16mm reflex viewing cameras. I hear people rave about their Super-8s being the best ever made too.
Beaulieu made gorgeous cameras with insanely nice optics. I would put the R16 in my top 5 16mm cameras in terms of how it looks. As far as the pictures, well, I've owned a couple of them but sadly never shot any footage with them. It was 25+ years ago and I had them because I loved they way they looked. The footage I've seen has been great and coincidentally, I've had my eye on a couple of them recently. Be aware, they are not quiet, are apparently prone to a few issues and do not have native crystal motors. I love the 200' magazines too!!
@@Filmboy24 I figured it would be a cheaper alternative to get a working reflex model 16mm because a Bolex equivalent would cost $1000 more. Doing my research for Super 8 cameras it’s safe to say I’ll stick with a Canon. A Nikon r8 and r10 are good too I hear.
Hello, Mike! Nice video! I ordered a cam like this, but figured out it doesn’t have an eyepiece :(
Thanks so much!!
Sorry to hear about the eyepiece. They do pop up from time to time on Ebay or you could look at Duall Camera in New Jersey, I believe they carry the eyepieces (a bit pricey).
@@Filmboy24 Thank you very much! Can I ask your e-mail? Wanted to show you a photo of a camera i’ve bought, it comes with a strange motor, maybe you can help?
@@hellodrofa Absolutely, my email is: filmboy24@gmail.com
Question, what are your rendering settings to maintain the detail.
I made a grainy stop motion and the footage was a challenge to render and the result came out muddy.
I typically scan and render from the scanner as either an uncompressed MOV file or a TIFF image sequence. From there, everything gets rendered (during editing) as AVC .mp4 files. I use a decent bit rate to help maintain detail.
@@Filmboy24 the aesthetic you maintained throughout the video was lovely to watch
@@auyabbaby Thank you!!
The film looks so smoky
Thank you!
What oil would you use to oil an Arriflex 16S, and how much?
Hi Donald, that's a good question. I haven't actually oiled my camera, just the magazine & torque motor. I used 1 drop of lightweight (3 in 1) oil for the gear shafts in the torque motor and Arriflex's own "Special Grease" for the drive gear. No more than one drop of oil (I even wiped a little away). Here is a great resource for servicing an Arri S:

@@Filmboy24 Thanks! 👍
I used a DZS 12 Amp BUCK voltage down converter to regulate my 12v battery voltage down to 8.4 Volts for my ARRI 16S. They cost about $11 but you would need to provide a case and power plugs. I had a link but youtube keeps deleting my post.
Thanks for the info, Paul! I found it on Amazon. Did you use a fan or is it fine without?
@@Filmboy24 you won’t need a fan it has a large heat sync and the camera should only draw a few watts.
@@paulcotto Perfect! Thanks again!!
Where the heck can I find one of these?
Hey Alonzo, if it's the crystal motor you're talking about, I got lucky with mine, it was in the bottom of a box of Arriflex magazine parts I bought a long time ago on eBay. I've only seen one on there since but I do see Tobin crystal motors on there from time to time.
How much did you pay for your camera?
Hi Milan, for the camera, 3 prime lenses, variable speed motor and power cable, I paid just under $2K.
@@Filmboy24 Jeah, thats quite normal. Thank you.
