  • In this episode we discuss different cameras and why some are close to crystal sync without a crystal and why others are nowhere even close.
The Workbench is an all new series all about working on motion picture film, from the pre-production through post, all the way through the delivery process.

So, it stayed sort of in sync for 40 seconds and it started to diverge at about 20 seconds, not something you would use for journalism. I've been reading on the topic lately, and the invention of a sync sound system that allowed to have picture and sound in sync for a whole roll while recording the sound separately, it was a very big deal back in the early 1960s. There is a 1960 film called "Primary", which was shot kind of in sync, but not really, so it took them serious efforts to more or less sync it in post using whatever primitive tech they had. You may want to delve deeper into the issue of sync sound as it is a fascinating topic.

It was for sure not usable, because it doesn’t just get slower, it’s not consistent enough in its speed. So even if you corrected the shot, it would be wrong in multiple places. I’d say you’d get two sentences of dialog before it’s out sadly.

    Hey Tyler!
Big fan of your channel and videos! Curious about the model/brand of recorder you used to capture the audio for your sync test. I own a Bolex EL S16 and i'm interested in running a similar test. Previously, I've attempted to sync audio with my iphone but the camera & audio didn't line up in post ( maybe the camera doesn't run at a consistent 24FPS). I just know the EBM & EL are fairly similar cameras so this sparked my attention considering your audio/footage lined up great.

I actually used the same camera (blackmagic pocket first gen) that I’m using as the main camera for my show to record the audio. I didn’t not want to trust an external audio recorder, only something shooting at the same frame rate would suffice.

@@CinemaRepository Copy that ! My audio friends said the issue I may have experienced was due to the sample rate that voice memo records at is slower than the standard sample rate associated with 24FPS. Voice memo records at 44.1 kHZ and 48 kHZ. Gonna run another test or try and track down a Crystal Sync for the Bolex EL ( Damn near impossible). Regardless, thanks for the response & looking forward to the next video!

Have you tried speeding up the super 8 footage by a set %? I've seen other people who had it running out of sync but it was consistently, to the point that a 10% speed up (or whatever it was for the specific camera) was enough to get it to line up.

Yes I can alter the speed of the audio to get it to match but it’s not perfect because the camera does not run at a constant speed it’s all over the place.

Hi there, total newbie here but I'm starting to find this stuff really interesting. I'd love to be able to film something on 16mm with sound just for fun. Do you think that the sound syncs well just with the camera that you used, or would you guess it would sync well with most cameras that shoot 16mm? Thanks!

Na, it doesn't work well. If you want to truly capture sound, you'll have to use an actual crystal sync camera. I now have A Beaulieu 2016 for lightweight work and it's stable, but it doesn't run at exactly 24fps, more like 23.80fps, which means no matter what, you're always having to adjust in post. Real crystal cameras, will run at crystal sync speeds flawlessly. So an Arri SR or Aaton LTR/XTR. You could get a CP16R, they do run at crystal speed as well.

Is there a program to manually sync the 8mm frame by frame? I wonder if there is any pattern in when it speeds up and slows down the frames.

Sadly not, gotta so it all manually by guess work, altering the speed of the audio by small percentages so it works.

What was the exact model for the 16mm bolex?
