    Great to see a new episode of "The Workbench" uploaded. Please keep making them.. Nice comparison between Super8 and 16mm and I think you've got it spot on. I used Super8 extensively in the late 90s but I wouldn't go back to it now - 16 is so much better..

      We got another 50 or so episodes shot, it’s just down to editing! Thanks for being patient, I should have many more in the coming weeks :)

    I agree with you 100%. With that when Kodak started bringing back Super 8, they should have chose 16mm instead. Speaking to that last subject, Kodak was designed to bring products to the masses, instead they came out with a 5000.00 + piece of Super 8 plastic? Yeah I know it's not the same market as it was but they did not think their project through as carefully as they could have. It also needs to get much more affordable with good quality to get the masses involved.

    Great advice. I shot a lot of 8mm, super 8mm and 16mm.
    However that was decades ago.
    The 16mm stuff still looks great. I just restored a Bell & Howell 302 projector! Thank you. Be well.

    Awesome, very detailed, easy to understand and informative as always! I fully agree with you: 16mm is the way to go. Such a beautiful format and IMHO the best bang for the buck. Thanks for everything you do!

    50’ of Super 8 @ 24fps is roughly 2min 30sec, it’s essentially like shooting 100’ of 16mm 💪🏼

      Yea I broke it down into 100ft numbers by seconds used because it was easier to digest and show and compare between 8 and 16.

    Great info! As for Super 8, I don't even want to know what you think about the $4.5K Kodak camera :)

      $5500 + tax and limited quantities.
      We will have one at the end of April to do a full test. I’ve already used it, not impressed. I’ll have to be nice about it in our review tho.

    • @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC
      @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC  Год назад

      Never gonna happen. The owners of the design and Kodak haven't come to an agreement financially. So Kodak isn't allowed to manufacture them. It's a real setback but I think they're so busy making film, they don't really care.

    Hi, I like the 8/16/33 mm look. But is there cheap alternative? Getting the footage developed and digitized is hardly affordable if you want to shoot a full length analog film (and dont want to use pseudo-analog digital filter.)

      Not really, gotta raise the money and do it for real sadly.

    Super 8 really only competes with 16mm price wise when you shoot Double Super 8. The 15 feet cartridges are definitely insanely overpriced for just 2,5 minutes at 24fps. And i would never wanna shoot at 18 fps... i hate that amateurish jerky non-standard framerate. Double Super 8 really should have always been MORE popular because of the longer recording time (when you flip the reel after one pass) and also the steadier image thanks to the pressure plate. Even Single 8 was the far better concept than the Kodak Super 8 cartridges.

    • @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC
      @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC  2 года назад +2

      Yep, it’s a real shame the format died before it got much traction. Even 100ft super 8 daylight spools would have been far superior to the cartridge formats. It’s just the cost difference for film and lab is minimal. The benefits are longer run time. The detractor is, lower quality no matter what. It’s still super 8.

      @@NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC The worst thing is the crappy lenses on the majority of super 8 cameras. They are just not very good at all and don't deliver what could be possible. If you look at Super8 material shoot on a Logmar Super 8 camera, with variable lenses, it is amazing to see what a quality you can squeeze out of that little format. But of course 16mm will have the benefit of a more shallow Depth of Field and and sharper picture. Especially nowdays when 16mm has a quality that is basically like 35mm. Personally i want to go to 16mm SOOO much but i just don't have a camera so far. I'd probably go for something like a Canon Scoopic since the K3 cameras really are exploding in price right now and i don't even wanna shoot Super16. Just regular 16mm is all i want. With a proper 4K open gate Scan there would be plenty of headroom for a possible widescreen crop in post.

      @@KRAFTWERK2K6Šta mislite o kameri Bolex zoom reflex p1?
      Znam da je to još lošiji format od super 8. Međutim, nedavno sam napravio par snimaka, ali pri brzini od 22 fps. Ipak, želeo sam da snimam na 24 sličice, međutim, moj projektor može maksimalno da prikazuje do 22 kadra u sekundi.
      Filmove sam poslao u laboratoriju i uskoro ih očekujem. Nadam se samo da slika neće biti puna trzaja kao kod 18fps. Čuo sam priče da je taj objektiv kod kamere P1 izuzetno oštar i širok i da daje prilično dobre rezultate.

    I m commenting that on so many videos. But i think nikki coyle is really good for that. She demands 45$ for developing and scanning (4k or hightt) for super 8
    It’s incredible how sharp she gets them! She also has a RUclips channel on here where you can see her scanning

    • @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC
      @NarrowGaugeFilmsLLC  3 года назад +1

      Well 8mm isn’t as widely used, in fact it’s tricky to get film especially color film. There are only a few companies who have custom cut and perforate it. I did a video about 8mm vs super 8 tho.
