Good Morn-Fternoon-Vening! My name is Mike and welcome to my tiny little space in the analog universe. I'm an '80s, Analog & Film Nerd and my channel is dedicated to just that...well, not the nerd part, but the other stuff. I shoot, process, scan and display a wide variety of film formats, including 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm movie film as well as a happy mix of still formats.
I steer clear of boring patter and like a fun, whimsical approach, never taking anything too seriously (except developing of course).
Please take a minute and explore my videos & hopefully...there's a format for you!

Found Film 70 - Super 8 Kodachrome 40 Shot Almost 40 Years Ago! Finally Developed | Filmboy24
Round 70! I have an abundance of (and regularly obtain) old, random rolls of super 8 film that were shot many years ago by their original owners and for whatever reason, were never developed. These cartridges were either inside cameras (or cases) that I've purchased or included with other lots of film I've purchased over the years or in some cases, sent to me by viewers.
In this video, we're going to see what's on this particular cartridge of old Kodachrome 40 Type A Silent film.

This looks fantastic.
Thanks, Matthew!!
It really does look outstanding. Do you know what make and model of camera that it came from? Thanks!
Thanks, Rich!! I honestly can’t remember if he told me or not.
Last year I shot and developed an unexposed roll of Kodachrome 25 that was inside an 8mm (not super 8) camera that I bought at a thrift store and I got surprisingly good results from it considering that this particular roll was from the late 80s. I overexposed by 1 stop and overdeveloped it (it still came out underexposed) and I also developed my roll in black and white
That's great to hear! Remember, when developing old Kodachrome as a B&W negative, the longer it's in the developer, the more dense (darker) your film will get. I've never heard of a scenario where Kodachrome would need to be in the developer for longer that 7 minutes.
WOWZA! That was beautiful!!! Thanks for continuing to take a chance on Kodachrome! 😀❤
Absolutely! Thanks, KD!!
Amazing
Thank you!
Yowza! Very nice.
Thanks, Mike!
Wow! I also was stunned. Very cool footage.
Thanks, Steven!!
Hi Mike! Thanks so much for developing this hidden gem! I am so glad I sent it to you! I was surprised how well it came out! Great job! I bought the camera in a thrift shop. Who knows how long it sat in different temps and conditions. Glad I could contribute to one of the "bestest" of RUclips channels.
Thanks so much, Jeffrey! I truly appreciate all your support!!
Excellent results on this one. Thanks for another great found film !
Thank you, Cecil!!
Your right. That looks great!
Thank you!!
Second! 43 seconds after upload! The quality of this film--both the print and the content--is outstanding. Thanks!
Wow! Thanks, Craig!!
First!
I have two Kodachrome II Super 8 Film rolls (exposed) I suspect were filmed by my Dad (late 60's/early 70's). Do you process these for people? Looks very simlar to the rolls you processed in this video (round 44).
Feel free to email me at filmboy24@gmail.com and we can discuss.
A shame it wasn't developed back in the day, as it looks like a fairly solid image- a good match of lighting and film stock
Absolutely! So many of these would've looked so much better in their native processes :(
Can you use this film on a canon 514xl? And not the XL-S?
Unfortunately, no, this film has to be used in cameras with the sound head in place. The 514XL does not have one, it's for silent only.
Thank you for this incredible guide!!!
My pleasure, thanks so much for watching & commenting!!
just picked this one up yesterday from an estate sale. glad i only paid 10 dollars for it too
Have fun with it!!
I wonder why this never got developed.
Sadly, things just happen sometimes and these old films get pushed to the side. We were able to locate a lady once, that was in a series of 18 films I got on eBay, shot but undeveloped. It was documentation of her and her husband's 4th anniversary at Disney in Florida in 1986. She said that her husband shot so much film that they simply couldn't afford to get it all processed. When he passed a few years ago, she felt she had no choice but to send most of it to a local auction, where it ended up in the hands of a reseller, then in mine. I got what I had of hers all processed and scanned and back to her. Fun moment! P.S. all of that is in a video here on my channel :)
@@Filmboy24 Awesome!
Aww! This is probably the most adorable footage I've ever seen. I hope this individual see's this.
Thanks, Tom! I agree, these are images that definitely should have been shared within the rightful families.
Watching this since I recently got a Super 40k (which has a few differences but this is the closest review content I can find)! 6:25 - 6:50 you mention that you're not sure which one the battery checker is for - if it's the same as the 40k, then it's the handle/motor batteries! The indication for the light meter battery is if the underexposure needle appears even when pointed at a bright object such as a light. 13:37 My 40k came with both a rubber plug for that slot (for the express purpose of rain NOT getting in) (along with the little metal thing to slot in) so maybe that one used to have one? Especially if you thrifted it / got it from an antique shop. Do you have any film recommendations for these kinds of cameras? I've done some research, but it's always nice to hear from someone who's been in the field longer than me.
Thanks so much for the information! I really like this little camera, very solid. I've shot a lot of different stocks in mine and it will easily handle any of it. You will overexpose 500T a couple of stops (not really a big deal as 500T has so much latitude) in it if you're using auto exposure, but you can dial it in with manual exposure pretty easily with a light meter. Have fun with it!
OMG… this video made me so many flashbacks… miss real film processing 😊
Thank you!!
Helping me get through tough times...thanks for all you do. Cheers!
Hang in there, Rich!
Love these videos Mike!! ❤
❤❤❤
isnt that supossed to be color film?
Yep!
Film starts at 4:41.
Nice! Another memory saved from oblivion. I’m guessing from the stocking in the footage early on that the young lad’s name is Mike. I’m always fascinated by how anyone could leave film like this undeveloped.. unless the roll wasn’t completely shot and still had room for more. Then I could understand the “I’ll finish that roll on New Year’s” thinking.
Thanks, Mike! I'm surprised every time I receive another roll that there is so much lost footage out there. Sad really.
a NEW found film "ATTACK OF THE BLACK LABS!!!" lol Great as usual!
😂😂 Thanks, KD!
Got that same little plastic train toy when I was little. Still have it packed away. And we had the same grill.
This whole thing reminded me so much of Christmas in my younger years!!
That was an awesome Tonka cement truck he got there. Thanks for another one!
So many great memories of my younger life :) Thanks, Steven!
Nooooo not the "cam sandwich!" I have three of those decaying in my camera cemetery out in the backyard.
🤣🤣 I knew you would appreciate that one!!
Another great video, Mike. And great shirt!
Thanks, Matthew!!
You had me at “69”!
Hehe me too. Hehe 69 duuuuude!
😂😂🤦♂
Love the puppies! Thanks Mike!
Thanks, Cecil!
where is part two???
Still a work in progress, sadly.
Sorry I missed it but glad to catch the replay
Hopefully we see you next time!!
WTF! Over 2K for KODACHROME?! WHAT!? WHAT!? JEEZ LOUISE HELL NO! Im freaking out man! The worst price gouging of "Zombiefilm?" You see, this is why ive been MEMEING and trolling this film stock all summer. Man I really wish I would have been at this one now! Excuse me, I need to go take some Excedrin before the blood vessels in my head burst!
I'm still trying to figure out where these prices come from! I mean...it's Kodachrome! 😂😂
Sorry I missed another one. Was on a Real Estate assignment gig.
Had a little discussion about Bolex H series camera CLA and this guy comes highly recommended by our members: Robert M. Ditto, 96 Bayles Street, Ward, AR 72176 | Phone: (501) 743-0335 | Email: whataloadofbolex@gmail.com

spicy!! love it mike
Thanks, Lyle!!
That Bell&Howell was one of the first Super 8 cameras I ever bought. That and the Sankyo XL-60S. I remember buying it because it looked similar and cost much less than the Canon series of similar shaped cameras, which I viewed as being much more higher end and unattainable due to the cost at the time. It's actually a pretty fun little camera if you're just using 50D and are okay with auto exposure. Unsure if it could properly handle 200T, though. I should get around to shooting with it some more!
Thanks, Gray! That Bell & Howell would handle 200T just fine, done it a few times. In fact, you could get away with 500T in it as well. Overexposed by a couple stops with 500T but pretty easily fixed in post. P.S. let me know when you're film is finished and you're ready to start promoting it :)
I gotta catch up on the live streams. I didn’t notice any frame jitter on either cameras and they both seem to work very well. I was really on the look out to bust one down for frame jitter, which is what I’m struggling with on my Sankyo but neither one had it. Stalemate.
Missed you at the last few, get in there!
Very nice sir. Maybe it was due to caffeine jitters from morning coffee, but I thought the B&H footage was not quite as steady as the Canon? Exposure, color and “sharpness” (super 8mm & “sharpness” together?) all seem very close. Thank you for these camera examinations and comparisons!
Thanks, Mike! I seem to be getting more jitters as the years go by 😂
the Canon definitely LOOKS sharper, but that could be user error...
I agree, Dave. I also agree that there's probably an element or two of user error 🤪
Got a cart of PLUS X😮 but I Ain’t gonna use those cams I’ll use my silent 1014 since I hadn’t shot a proper film on it
Awesome!!
Hi Mike I agree with you about the possibilities of this B&H. The match could be more equal between the B&H T50xl VS 514xl Or B&H T30xl VS 310xl ! I will probably see no difference between all footages. Great regards !!!
Thanks, Jzulion!
Both segments are similar in grain and sharpness. The main difference was the Canon exposure was a little more than the B&H. That surprised me cause you said the B&H had a faster lens. The exposure made the colors on the B&H a little more saturated but both are very good
Thanks, Barry! You know, in the future, when I do these types of comparisons, I need to start showing the straight, ungraded footage as well. In all fairness, I did quite a bit of post work (white balance, levels, saturation, etc.) to the footage from both cameras, trying to get the most out of each.
Excellent ! Thanks Mike, great to see a weekday video. Love the comparisons !
Thank you, Cecil!!
Hi Mike! Great comparison! both looked great, the Canon had a bit of more sharpness! Thanks for sharing! See you on the next live stream!
Thank you, Jeffrey!!
I have one roll of Kodachrome 40 Type A. How do I get the film to you?
Hey Mike, feel free to email me at filmboy24@gmail.com.
