  • Round 61! I have an abundance of (and regularly obtain) old, random rolls of super 8 film that were shot many years ago by their original owners. These cartridges were either inside cameras (or cases) that I've purchased or included with other lots of film I've purchased over the years or in some cases, sent to me by viewers.
In this video, we're going to see what's on this particular cartridge of old Ektachrome 160 Type A Sound film.
Equipment I used to make this RUclips Video:

Looking and sounding great on my cell phone. Great job as always! I wonder why someone would go to the trouble documenting Joey's progress as a swimmer on sound film and then not sending it off for processing. Something might have happened to prevent that.

Agreed.. my father shot tons of film but always found the time to get it developed. About once every month or two the family would gather together to view the latest films. But to leave so many unprocessed, I’m thinking there was a reason. I’m looking forward to when Joey’s family gets involved and solves the mysteries.

In the infamous words of John Curtis Steele, “I’ll be 46 at Hooters.” This has nothing to do with the Joey movie but I felt it would be appropriate.

Surprisingly exellent sound! At first I thought that was horribly loud projector but then realized it must be a motor bike or minibike maybe. Sounds like Dean Martin's version of "Memories" perfomed by someone else playing in the background. And that was playing there right? Not overdubbed?

Thank you! Yes, definitely a motor of some kind in the background. I'm always surprised at the audio quality of some of these old Super 8 cartridges. I shot a lot of them in the 80s & 90s and don't remember them sounding this good, lol.
Yes, that music is playing there, not by me.

I always thought film quality was low fidelity. But this sounds fantastic. I always thought that Super 8 sound would be the worst of all film formats as it has the narrowest soundtrack. BUT cassettes although look wider, they're cut into 4 tracks - 2 in one direction and 2 in the other. So the one track on a cassette is 1/4 of the tape. Probably around the same size as the Super 8 soundtrack. AND cassettes run at 1 7/8 IPS. Super 8 at 24FPS, I'm guessing the film frame is about a 1/4 inches? 4 frames roughly equal one inch maybe. Divided 24 by 4 and you get 6 IPS tape speed. Maybe Over 3 times better quality than cassette. Very high quality.

That's a great breakdown! Quick note, when running sound on these old films, it was always done at 18 FPS, not 24. I do my own double system sound now though at 24 FPS.

@@Filmboy24 Ah, I did notice this footage seemed to be running long for 24fps. Longer than what I would have thought sound film would be running. Yeah, 3 minutes and 20 seconds this is, not 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I did, however, just see a Super 8 with sound running at 24fps from '77. Most people would probably use 18 fps, I'm sure. Short film time at 24fps and more cartridges to carry. And costs more. But soon, hopefully soon, I'm going to run some Super 8 film. I'd like to shoot at 24fps though. I'll try 18fps too. I'm trying to get a lot of things done including updating my old computers to do this AND get a Retroscan Universal Mark I.
What computer do you use? Right now my best computer is a Dell XPS 8300 I bought in 2011, updated from 6GB's of RAM to 32GB's, a GTX 1080 graphics card, and a 2 TB SSD. Works great. But I just compared my CPU to something that looks great today (performance and price wise) and it's 93% more powerful than the CPU I've got. So pretty soon I'll start on that project.

@@tomz500 I'm currently using an HP i9 3.7 GHz 10 core computer with 64 GB of RAM. I just use the external Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD drives (USB-C) to capture scans and they work great.

@@Filmboy24 Ah, sounds like a great setup. I was wondering if I should have 64GB's of RAM. I almost said it before you told me you had it. I did hear if you want to do video editing then you should have 64GB's, otherwise it's not necessary

Presumably your developing method is why it's B/W not colour?
What do you use for the conversion - one of the Winait/Wolverine/Reflecta etc., or something else?

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  9 месяцев назад +2

That’s partly correct, the other reason is that this is the older Ektachrome 160 (pre EM-26) and it required an emulsion pre-hardner. The hot temps of color E-6 chemistry will melt the emulsion right off on this film. The “newer” E160 film didn’t require this and it’s possible (I’ve done it several times) to get a tad bit of weird color from it. B&W is just much safer and almost always guaranteed.
I scan everything on my MovieStuff Retroscan Universal scanner.
