A bit late to the show, but M.K.'s video's are the only clear ones on this subject. This led me on to a deeper dive... It wasn't totally clear to me but this video helped, and confirmed by reviewing books in my library, the barcode is encoding the ISBN number in EAN format. Price text is completely unrelated and is a guide to the retailer to program their own point-of-sale program with your price on scanning your ISBN #, or disregard and set their own price. Graphic designer's know this: all design programs either have included, or have add-in module, barcode generator in all formats including QR codes. They also have a field to place additional text anywhere you select next to barcode, i.e. your suggested price. For example, Corel (and others) have included barcode generators for over 20 years. Selling barcodes is a bit like companies selling water - nice when you really need it but don't have it. Checking books, some have price, some do not, some have price in 2 or 3 currencies - I have several books with US, CDN, GB, EU, and AUS prices!
Hi. I’m about to go through the publishing process with kdp and ingram spark and am thinking of adding the price above the barcode, it was suggested to me that it can be useful to slightly overprice the book and then sell at a reduced rate, this is to prevent under-pricing, Also, I keep hearing other indie authors saying it's better not to put a price on at all. I wonder what your thoughts are on this? Thanks
Thanks. Q: If I publish my own paperback on Amazon using my own ISBN and my own barcode (with price) are bookstores and libraries more likely to stock/carry my book? Thank you.
Owning the ISBN and using a barcode with the price on it helps. However, many bookstores are unlikely to order from Amazon (they are killing their business). You could sell copies you have on consignment perhaps. Libraries are starting to open their procurement process to Amazon, but not all of them. Draft2Digtial has great distribution to libraries.
Figures I did everything else right and expected it to generate the barcode in the cover creator. Now it is too late to go back and fix it for another 3 days. I wish I had seen this before I sent it off for review. Now it will take a miracle for me to release on-time.
I have my own ISBN. Does it matter if I use a barcode company from Canada or the US? If I sell my book at a store in Canada or US do I need a different price stating US or CAD? Can I just go with a US pricing and still sell in Canada?
how do you get your emailed barcodes onto the cover of your book? i know some authors that will simply crop it either from their cover template or email and paste it onto their actual cover. what are some tips?
I use photoshop to add that barcode to my cover when I am making my own, otherwise I provide it to formattedbooks so they can add it for me. (I only do this if the price is on the barcode, otherwise they've been able to provide the no-price barcode for me.)
I was just wondering about this the other day. For the moment I just put my own generated barcode without the price tag. The reason why I did this is because I have a question about how this works when you put your book on sale. For instance I plan to sell my debut novel at $3.99. But I'm putting it out at 99 Cents at the beginning. So should I use a barcode that indicates the normal price of the book? I would appreciate your insight into this! Thank you so much for this video!
Hi S.D., the SRP (suggested retail price) is what is on the barcode. In this example the non-sale price would be on the barcode and your limited time price drop would not require a new barcode. If you were permanently changing prices then it would. (Also for $3.99 to 0.99 I'm guessing that would be for your eBook and that format does not require a barcode so no worries on that one.) Great question!
@M.K. Williams Thanks for the information on the price and the barcode. And yes, I realized later I gave my ebook prices 😅. My question was for my paperback, but at least you understood what I was asking! Thanks so much!
Hello. I'm a street & documentary photographer and want to publish my first photo book. Usually in photobooks, there are no borders at least in two sides. Can that be made possible with Scribus by settting borders at zero??? There will be minimal text but mostly photographs except may be cover page and few others. Please make a video with such a project. Will be very useful for photographers like me.
Hello, I haven't done image based books in Scribus before so I'm not sure if that solution would work. If it does that is awesome! If not, a formatter like FormattedBooks might make the process easier for you: formattedbooks.com/?ref=31
@@1MKWilliams thanks a lot for the reply. However, if at any time you get an opportunity to get in to such a project please share on RUclips. Or may be someone else you know who does photo books. Will be of great help. Best wishes.
Hello! I’m publishing my first book next month. Yay! The barcode from Amazon is HUGE and covers a logo I have on the back. The Ingram spark one is much smaller. Does anything come in a smaller size that I can generate?
Hi Jean, Hmm in this case I would suggest adjusting the back cover logo that you mentioned so that you can still use Amazon's barcode. The size of the barcode doesn't have much variation because if it is too small it is harder to scan. Best of luck!
so BOOKOW is free UNLESS you want a price on the barcode? am I understanding that correctly? if you want a price on your barcode, you have to donate $24 ?
My dear, your information is helpfull, thanks. Since as a non native english speaker follower, I must watch your videos only by lowering the speed. Which turns it kind of unpleasant and unatural to hear. Right, its your channel, but couln't you take that in consideration?

@@1MKWilliams Thank you.
Great info!! I have Bowker and was looking for another alternative, and now I have one....
So happy I could help!
In Bookow when they ask for the title do I also add in the subtitle as well. Do I need to put a dash in between the title and subtitle?
Yes Include the full title and separate with a semi-colon :

It doesn't matter where the barcode comes from you can enter your owned ISBN for it to appear on the barcode
