I have a question. Do I get a barcode for every format of my book with paid I.S.B.N.'s when I upload to a print on demand company? Or just ONE barcode for ALL formats?
Thanks! Very informative. If I have a paid ISBN, can I leave the publisher field open (or write my own name) and decide on a brand name later on once the book is published?
Great content for a new author on the path to self-publishing. You mentioned having your book in the library. What are the benefits of having it in the library? Thank you again.
Depending what country you are in, you may have cheaper prices. In Europe they often only cost around 70€, so a lot cheaper. It depends on where you live though, as ISBN contain the country of the publisher and a US code can't be used by a non-US publisher. So outside the US, check your local Provider.
If I am pre-releasing my ebook before my paperback, do I set the publish date of the ebook to the pre-release date or the same release date as the paperback?
Thank you for this! It was very helpful! What about copyrighting books? I have heard that it is not necessary anymore, because once it is in print, it is "copyrighted." But, I have also heard that we need to pay big bucks at the Library of Congress to copyright anything we want to put out there. What do you think?
Geez man, I was here at the beginning of time, where calenders were yet to be invented for not another uncountable millenia. Hark not I did at the stars for not guiding me on their own, as I instead just listened to the woman speak and glean the information she was giving for free for your convenience in a respectful way
You are very sharp lady! Literally I was looking to see if I needed to purchase a barcode because I was SURE you don't. I make barcodes for other stuff I do in CorelDraw or any free online place. I share your pain for Bowker trying to capitalize on some people! Thanks.
I don't understand the timing on the ISBN and barcodes -- The barcode needs to be on the paperback book cover, so you must have it before you upload your book, but the ISBN assignment and barcode happen when you upload the book.
Great video! Ten years and three books in and I still learn stuff, mostly off great videos from giving folks like Mandi! In the beginning you learn real quick that writing the books is the easy part. New authors don’t feel overwhelmed! It’s overwhelming, just try not to feel it! Haha
Hi Mandi, great job on your vids. My question is about the timing of the book release on KDP in conjunction with the book launch date that would be filled out for an ISBN on the Bowker Identification Service page. Can I still input the paid ISBN # on KDP if the book is listed as forthcoming on the Bowker site? I will plan to launch sometime in October would like to get everything setup now. Thanks.
Wonderful video. Thanks for posting. I do have one newb question. When I submit my manuscript to KDP, is it still "forthcoming", or "Active"? In other words, do I use the date I "submitted" or the date I see that Amazon has my book for sale, for my publication date on Bowker?
I’m also a writer and fan of the written word‘but I just started and finished 5 short children’s stories illustrated ‘I have all the stories and illustrations pictures that I use and Ai generated from my description of all 3 of my children and me .but I’ve been stuck for weeks on trying to create the cover book and include the story‘but I can’t get past the part where they make your own template on canvas
Hi Mandi, could you please make a video on how to publish a 2nd edition using new ISBNs for the books that were earlier published on KDP and link those books together so that they are jot listed as 2 separate books, please? My son wrote a book and I want to use KDPs free ISBN since trying to keep our costs low but in future if the book sells well and we want to expand to other platforms, what would we need to do?
I’m new to self publishing. I started with 2 journals on KDP but plan to also use B&N. KFP only shows the cover with the free ISBN . I do not plan to use a free one again. Great video. What are your recommendations to add a paid ISBN to an already published journal.
What about the ISBN issued by my own country agency? Can I use those for Amazon? I thought the ones from my own country can only for book published in my own country. But how about the ones for digital platforms?
Hi Mandi, thanks for the great video! I just want to ask if can I purchase ISBNs from Australia Bowker as I am planning to move there soon and still be able to publish my books on all self-publishing platforms and be able to sell them without any problems. I personally do not know how it is done. It is my first time thinking to buy paid ISBNs. Your help is truly appreciated! 🙏
Hello! Thank you because this was so helpful. So to clarify, if I am going publish an e book and paper back for the same book, I need to purchase two ISBNs? Also, Bowkers is quite expensive. Are there any other cheaper avenues to take that are trustworthy? I am on a tight budget because I spent most of my money on an editor.
I have a question. I purchased an isbn from the platform you discussed in this video. Someone else is telling me that "If you want to use your own isbn you must provide one for each version and also the imprint. An imprint is the entity associated with your title's ISBN. KDP will automatically verify the imprint entered to ensure authenticity. If you are not 100% sure what is the correct imprint please ask your ISBN provider for the imprint for Amazon Kindle direct publishing." Can you comment on this please, what is the imprint and how do I use the already purchased isbn correctly to satisfy the imprint requirements...if you know? Thank you
Thanks for the info Mandi, I'm a first time writer, and this helped a lot. Question. Do I need different ISBN if I have translated versions of the same book? THanks
Hi Mandi, Thanks for your videos! Wouldn't it be better to have a printing company to print out my book and then I use Amazon as a market place to sell them? For instance, I pay and print out 5k copies and then using Amazon as a platform for sell.
What would be the downside of purchasing 500 ISBN's and providing them to authors for $75? They would save 40%. Even at $50, publishing 11 books by other authors would cover the cost. Beside the paperwork involved of setting up the ISBN what other hassles would there be? - Thanks.
Thank you for an excellent video. If I use my own ISBN for a self published book, will it enhance my chances of getting reviews through entities like Publishers Weekly (vs a free ISBN)? If I use my own ISBN and still use POD, will that still allow distribution to libraries etc.? Thank you!
Thank you for making this video. It has been very helpful. I've decided to go the paid ISBN route since I plan on using both Ingram spark and KDP. I do have a questions for you regarding an LLC. I'm a teacher and I already have an LLC for my independent teaching business (it's the name of my channel). If I were to make my publishing name "Mini School Publishing" with the same logo I use for my business, would I have to create a separate LLC just for the publishing? Or, can I write it off as business for the LLC I already have.
I'm so confused: I upload my 1st children's book to KDP - using a free ISBN. Then I learned about Ingram Spark and thought that would be a great place to publish the same book. Now I have one book on (what I thought) was two different platforms, with two different ISBNs. I've heard that I can lose my KDP account because of this. Is that true? What should I do?
If you get an ISBN from KDP you can’t sell on other platforms like Ingram Spark or Barnes & Noble that’s why it’s best to pay for your own and then sell on those sites.
Do you have time to take on a client for pay, to help a senior (69 years old) get two of my manuscripts made into Ebooks and published on Amazon? They are both done and edited. I just started to watch your videos but its pretty Greek to me. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! I am working on my first book. I do want to sell it on Amazon as well but I do not want to be labeled as “self-publisher”. I do have a business with an LLC but it is not a publishing company. Could I buy my own ISBN and use my business name as the imprint name even though it is not a “publishing company”?
I don't have a publishing business. I'm publishing independently. What do I put down as my imprint? Can I just make up something, as long as i research that it isn't taken?
Hi, at the end of nineties, I got several dozens ISBN after I requested it somewhere, it was free I think. I only used one to self publish. Anyone knows where can I find those ISBN today that were assigned to me, as I lost the paper long ago. Cheers.
I have 6 books published on KDP, all with the free ISBN that was offered. I would like to publish them all on Ingram Spark now as well, so do I need to purchase ISBN's, then go back into KDP and change all the IBSN"S to the new ones?
Once a book is assigned an ISBN you can't change it. You would have to unpublished the books and re-publish with the new ISBNs and then contact Amazon to link up the listings so you don't lose your reviews. It's kinda a complicated process.
I need help! I assigned my isbn number to hardcover and filled out all the information but when I try to put it into B&N press it says the number is already being used. do I have to have a different number for amazon, b&n and ingram? if I do that's a lot of money!
I have also seen some publishing companies who sell cheaper ISBNs..this would obviously mean that it will seem you are a “published author” and not self publishing. Besides the issue of ownership, is there any other implication or downside buying this? Is it true that self-published books cannot get into the Amazon’s Bestseller List? (heard/read it somewhere). Thank you in advance.

I already subscribed and put notifications on from a previous video. I’m considering doing three ISBN for the same book, but can you get your own ISBN then later switch to KDP? The paperback book could go to Kindle. The Hard cover and ebook could go independent. Does that make any sense? Thank you for sharing!
@mandilynnwrites thank you for this great info. Quick question - I have purchased an ISBN through ISBNAgency, and attempted to post my book on amazon, but it doesn't allow me to post it because they say my ISBN doesn't match up with the publisher/manufacturer. I'm assuming this is the case because I self published. Have you run into this issue? It's error code 8572.

Cons and pros of just printing a book and selling it by myself. Thank you for the great info about the different publishing houses.

I am so glad you mentioned the bar codes. I had been looking for a video to explain this!
This video, and all your others, are immensely helpful. Really can't thank you enough for sharing all the information which I've found so helpful.

When you purchase isbns, can you use a gift card as a payment to help to pay for some of the cost?
In Barnes & Noble, In hardcover, how long does the book be (‘in review’) before I get the answer whether or not it is approved?
I appreciate you so much
If I publish my book on Amazon, will they be able to publish it in other online stores??
If you publish with Kindle Direct Publishing, it only publishes to Amazon.
Finland's National Library issues free isbns. Sad that it costs so much for Americans.
Then they technically own it, and the author is a state employee
Can I use my own personal ISBN for KDP and an ISBN that's free and owned by B&N?
No, they won’t let you use an ISBN owned by another print on demand company
