SOLD! OK, I understand now. I have genuinely watched a vid stating that ebooks don't need an ISBN. But obviously when coming to Ingram they do require one. So I'll use the same one on all platforms. Thank you for your tag!
I agree, each time I have published a book I noticed each different type of book had a different ISBN number. Otherwise no one could keep track of which book is which!
Thanks for the info ... It was really dramatic waiting to see if you were going to take a sip of your drink too :-) PS You don't need to purchase a barcode, however, from Bowker. That will get populated if you're doing a print book - for free. :-)
Hi, when I try to get an ISBN for an ebook in my country on the official site, I see that when you select "ebook," it asks you to choose the format-Kindle, EPUB, PDF, iBook, and many others. I'm confused. Do I need to get one ISBN for Kindle for Amazon and another for EPUB for other platforms? I've searched the web, and some people say you need a different ISBN depending on the iBook format.
This is likely a carryover from when there was one accepted eBook format for Amazon Kindle and a different format for everyone else. Now the ePub is the standard file type every platform accepts so go with that one
Yikes! My formatter used the same ISBN for all formats of my novel. The paperback’s already awaiting review, so that’s fine, but I wonder if I would get away with adding a separate ISBN for the eBook without changing the one listed in the copyright page? Btw, M.K., your advice was like a hand holding mine through the whole self-publishing process. Fantastic work.
Yes, audiobooks need ISBNs too. Findaway Voices gives you a spot to enter that as well as the associated eBook and print ISBNs so retailers can match them up.
I purchased the 10 pack of isbns when I started self publishing. I knew I had more than one book I wanted to write and each book can have 3-4 formats (eBook, paperback, hardcover, audiobook)
Hi Julian, Oh boy so I have videos about barcodes. The truth is that it depends on your strategy as an author. You can actually change out the barcode on your book at any time. when getting an ISBN from Bowker, it says to choose a format: Digital online or Electronic book text? I am assuming the latter because it will be a book to be read on a Kindle, correct?
Hi, ok so if I own my isbn and self published it on Amazon, Walmart, etc. my question is if I want to create my own audiobook and post it on RUclips and any other platforms can I do that without purchasing another isbn since it’s digital and not physical?
Yes, each version or format of the book needs a distinct ISBN. You could elect to get the "free" isbn from your audiobook platform but that locks you in. Generally, if you plan to have one book in multiple formats (ebook, paperback audiobook) it makes sense to buy the 10-pack from Bowker (for US authors). You start to save once you need more than 3. Best of luck!
Hello, I'm a Korean subscriber. Initially I used giving ISBN for free on Amazon, but I registered a publisher and got ISBN. I want to use the ISBN that I was issued in the book I posted on Amazon again What should I do? Should I delete it all and upload it again?

Hello, I am going to publish an ebook and a paperback on Amazon. I was under the impression that I don’t need to buy an ISBN for my ebook . Thank you for informing me otherwise. I am going to buy a bulk of 10 ISBNs on Bower. Can I use one of those ISBNs for my ebook ?
Also, I really want to have my paperback in book stores and online. I saw your video about putting a price on the barcode. I really am torn. Is it possible to ask my cover designer to make a cover with a barcode having a set price for book store purposes and another cover with the barcode without the price for KDP ?
Technically the ISBN is specific to the format. However KDP is transitioning away from the mobi and now accepts epub which all of platforms do as well so you can just use one for your epub file
When registering ISBN's on Bower for my ebooks, it looks like you can choose between epub and mobi as separate formats. So if you want to sell wide don't you need to get another ISBN for epub as Kindle uses mobi?
Hi Glen, great question and very timely. As of mid-June this year KDP no longer accepts Mobi files for upload and is moving to accept ePub. So effectively the big players in eBooks will mostly use ePub which makes the ISBN decision MUCH easier for us indie authors. All ePub :)
@@1MKWilliams Published some ebooks for Mellyora Ashley under Kindle Select and used only one ISBN each for the mobi format. That is great now you can publish wide using epub without buying additional ISBN's.
I just bought a bundle of 10 IBSNs on Bowker and assigned one of the ISBNs a barcode on Bookow for my paperback. I watched your video about having a ISBN for your ebook as well and not using Amazons. Do I need a new barcode for my ebook with a different ISBN now?
Hi Julia, No, eBooks do not need barcodes as they never pass over a register or point of sale. Digital products don't need barcodes. A lot of people use ISBN and barcode interchangeably but they are not the same. An eBook needs an ISBN but not a Barcode. A print book need both and ISBN and a barcode. Hope that helps!.
@@1MKWilliams Thank you! Yes, it does. So I shouldn't use Amazon's ASIN? I should have my own ISBN? Also, If I am using KDP for my paperback and ebook and Ingram for my paperback. That would mean I need one ISBN for my ebook on KDP and one ISBN and barcode for my paperback for both KDP and Ingram? Can I use the same ISBN for both sights? And when It comes to putting a price on my barcode, I know with KDP you shouldn't. But with IngramSpark you should, because most major stores won't buy your book with a barcode. I was thinking of setting my list price for my paperback at 11.99 or 12.99. Would you suggest I have two different covers-one with the listed price on the barcode for Ingram and one without for KDP?
@@juliabarnesauthor Yes, use your own ISBN, I always advocate for that so authors have less issues taking their books wide. In your example you need 1 ISBN for the eBook and 1 for the paperback (even if you use it on two platforms you only need 1 ISBN for that format.) As for the price on the barcode. Correct, you do not NEED the price on the barcode with KDP, however if you have a cover created with the barcode for IngramSpark you can use the same cover for KDP (just check the box when you upload that you provided your own barcode so they don't try to print over it.)
@@1MKWilliams Thank you so much for this information. I am having someone create my cover and I got my barcode on Bookow- one with a price and one without a price. Hi, I am purchasing my own ISBN numbers and provided it to my very first e-book on Amazon 2 days ago, but it appears ASIN ,so I I contact them, hoping to update , but receive the reply :I would like to inform you that a 10 digit ASIN will be assigned to a 13 digit ISBN. You can check the ISBN details under product details section. Unfortunately, it can not be change. What should I do ? Thank you !
Amazon provides an ASIN to every single product on their website. Regardless of whether you provide an ISBN or not, they will assign a unique ASIN (Amazon Specific Identification Number.) Your ISBN for the eBook is still the number to use when uploading to other platforms and will be a way for readers to search for your specific title.
I too have been confused by this ISBN thing. But in researching ISBN's I ran across this on Kindle. Can I re-use my ISBN from another publisher? If you own your book’s ISBN and have used it elsewhere, you can also use it on KDP. However, you must own the rights to the ISBN. OK, so I buy my ISBN's. Do I or do I not have the rights to the ISBN??? If I don't have the rights what have I bought? What is Kindle saying??
If you purchase the ISBNs then yes you own the rights to them. If a third party service or a publisher purchases the ISBN for you then they hold the rights to the ISBN.
I have a question. I am purchasing my own ISBN numbers but some of the information I have seen is if I publish through Kindle and want to make my e-book available through other places, I need another ISBN for the e-book. I know my paperback doesn't so this information strikes me as strange. I know if I opt in for the Select for 3 months, I am locked into that for 3 months, but I can opt out but needing another ISBN for my e-book????
Hi Theresa, so the explain I'll back up a bit. For each format of your book you need 1 ISBN, just one and only 1. So the ePub has 1 ISBN that can be used everywhere the book is published. The paperback has 1 ISBN that can be used everywhere the book is published (unless you change the trim size or make it large print then it gets a new one.) Yes, if you go with KDP Select you are locked in for 3 months, but if you think you will publish wide ever then you should NOT get the "free" ISBN from Amazon. You can only use it with Amazon and can't take it to other platforms. I would suggest owning the ISBN for all formats so you have the option to move or expand platforms as needed.
Thank you for your video ! Could please clarify for me this? if I want to publish an eBook on Amazon KDP and an eBook which also want to be printed on demand i will need 2 ISBN? Thank you in advance!
Thank you for this info! Can you clarify if indie publishers need a separate ISBN for a Kindle ebook than ebooks on other platforms? Or is one sufficient?
Happy to help. So you need ONE ISBN per format. Do if you have an ePub file for your eBook that is 1 ISBN and that can be used on any self-publishing platform that you upload to. Where it gets tricky is KDP offers a "FREE" ISBN to authors, that number belong the KDP and can only be used on their platform. This is why I advocate owning your ISBN so you can take it anywhere.
