Age of Empires 1 is getting remastered! We compare the graphics of the new Age of Empires Definitive Edition with the original game. We used official 4K screenshots provided by Microsoft for this comparison. For the original scenes we used the scenario editor.

I did too, I was born in 2000 but I loved AOE 1 and 2 to death and have been upset that there hasn't been a port of 1 on steam or anything, hopefully the remaster is on steam

even1313 you couldn't be more wrong, many people including me still play rts games, especially online, there's a huge community out there.
The remastered version seems less colorful somehow. I loved how aesthetically pleasing the original looked thanks to all the colors.
That seems to be a weird trend nowadays things have to look colourless to feel "modern"

I grew playing Age of Empires I, II and III along with Age of Mythology with my father. This game united us. As a 4 years old kid, I wouldn't stop watching him playing because this game looked so cool back in the days. I'd be lying if I said that those games are shit nowadays (because I bought them on Steam), but I'd really love to see remakes instead of remasters. Take a look at Age of Empires II: HD Edition on Steam. It's virtually the same thing than the original one. The only thing that is actually in HD is the fire and the water.
Also, I'd really love to see a brand new Age of Empires IV. We need this. This is my favorite franchise ever since I can remember along with Star Wars, which reminds me that Star Wars had a game that used the EXACTLY same engine (Star Wars Galatic Battlegrounds). Some editors could even transfer data from one game to another 'easily'.
If anyone at some point was an addicted fan of this series, you might remember the original plan, which was release 5 of these games. I in ancient Greece, II in the middle age, III during the colonization of the new world, IV in the modern world and V in the future. If only they could make an Age of Empires that bring all those together... That is what a "definitive edition" would look like to me.

I think Empire Earth and/or Rise of Nations tried to put those eras all together, they were good games too

i think they will make it good. graphics do look really good and i hope they change the movement a bit so they dont walk wrong ways and i hope it looks smoother overall. i tried other Age of Empire parts, but the AoE I is still best for me, it just reminds me of my childhood :D
I hope they keep the smaller details in, like dead units turning into skeletons. It was those little things that truly made the game.

i prefer the original games look, partly due to nostalgia goggles but also when compared, the original just looks so much more vibrant and colourful and the remastered, while more detailed, just looks extremely dark and bland in comparison
The art direction was better and had clearer elements to make units distinct and immediately recognisable.
Higher res is not immediately better sadly.

I didn't expect them to improve it this much, was just expecting a resolution boost and modern tweaks to the MP etc. This actually looks really good.

The original IMO is better - the units stand out more and look far more distinct and impressive. Hope we can switch between remastered and original like SC:BW allows

I think the colors are better on the original. They are more vibrant and units stand out better from the background. I also like the darker color of the water. The remaster's water is a bit too light.
Selling texture packs for 20 year old games, too many companies are doing this now. What a time to live in.

I mean considering how old AoE is its graphics are still pretty solid, it holds up just fine, there are some games that don't age well but i can't say that about age of wonders it aged amazinly
Malucs the original collector's edition was rereleased on DVD-rom, I have it too

The "HD" edition changed nothing, it looks exactly like the original game.
The only new thing is that the implemented higher resslutions to choose from, what could have easily be done by a free mod.
morti271 HD edition is a free patch you can download.
They should make a remaster version of it which will add the stronghold 2 features.
is it just me or the composite bowman and cataphracts actually look better in original? True that they are pixely but still you can see a shine on armour and elegance in dress which is missing in remastered version
Ahhh, I would always watch my older ol brother play this game when I was younger. Along with WoW and Battlefront games.
I remember when he would always use the cheat to immediately get rid of the shadows that surround your area and would use the cheat with the cars that had military guns on it and dudes with military guns. Ahhh, memories.
I might have to pick this up someday along with Halo Wars 2 since I've never actually played an RTS game before.

why did they removed the Short swordsman animation when attacking the buildings from different positions, i remember how cool the animation was from the right in the original, cause that was my prefered unit in the game :'(

Even though I'm 18, I use to play this alot on my dad's co.piter when I was younger and just for nastolgic reasons I prefer the older graphics. God I miss those days.
Well you could buy an old computer and monitor of the day and the game for way less that £100 and play it for years.

TBH the original looks better for most of the shots. The colors pop out better; the remastered version looks like someone applied a gray filter. The exception is the water at 2:03 onward which look a ton better.

The new graphics are darker, murkier, not as bright and sunny as the old graphics. Slightly disappointed.

pros and cons but i agree with the darker murkier look. they should have with with the original, just add more detail to the original sprites, or build in shader tech where shit will reflect a bit more, , and a tiny bit less saturated, in some areas, but looks like they went with new sprites that just looked fairly similar and in some cases like the wonders of the world entirely new sprites. granted some of it does look better. the water should be a darker blue in my opinion, with some chopping waves. i just don't think the sprites look as ferocious, how they used to have capes that were more bold, sticking out and flagellating, than realistic and big fat golden armor on the cavalry and catapults weren't pokey skinny little things. and they were rocks and plants to suggest water you could cross. the only thing better in this one is the roman statue wonder is a bit better. the shadows are slightly better, the cliffs are better, but there should be brown,reddish cliffs too still, and sand dunes would be good, some of the roman buildings are much the same but a bit more detail, yet some of it is much of a muchness

Looks sweet but much harder to distuingish stuff because the colors are tuned down. For example 2:12 all ships look the same compared to original game.
It would be rad if they had a mod to include the original textures
Would love for there to be an option to half the scale of units in the new edition, so units dont look like giants next to houses and trees, it would look soooo much better.

How it was VS How you remember it as a kid
i dont like how units in remastered version just stand there, without any animation. But when you look at the original you can see that every unit has animation, everything is alive and moving. Small details like theese really make the difference. I wouldnt buy the new one, would grab the old one insted

Hope they have some form of the physics engine implemented that was used in AOE 3, think that makes this game look good even today.
I appreciate them taking the time to update the game and it's graphics but nothing beats original nostalgia
even though the third one still looks amazing, its incredible to see that a game with such flat textures, getting some amazing shadow work and detail

Tbh I miss contrast, especially through the dark water and deep red roofs. Maybe the resolution will make up for it
It's not about graphics, its about the story! hence why minecraft, Metal gear and other contless golden aged games are still a treat when they're played the way they should be played!.

Age of Empires 1 is my favorite. I really am liking the remaster but I'm disappointed they didn't add snow terrain.
So are they going to remaster the 3rd one as well? If so I'm really hyped. I remember playing the first one with my papa and he would always ask me when a new one was coming I always told him that it probably will never come. He passed last year but I know I will enjoy this game for me and my papa.
So they've basically took the Age of Empires II graphics and imported it into the original. Neat.
I still have the original age of mythology's 2 cd version somewhere at home, but unfortunately cd key didn't worked last time I tried to be online which was like 10 years ago and I have that disc for more than about 10+ years

I think there will be a new age of empires game, but not before they remind us of how good the classics are. After all, you gotta pay homage to the games that made games what they are today.

The remastered soldiers look thin and slightly indistinguishable from each other imo. Personally, I prefer the lighter colour palette of the buildinfs in the original, but that may be nostalgia taking over haha.
Not a fan of the darker colors, cement cliffs, and weird water in the Definitive Edition, though I guess the more detailed unit models are ok. Why are modern games so averse to bright colors? They make armies much easier to see and command, and add to the sense of brightness in the world.
I do wonder, though, whether they have a day/night cycle in the definitive edition. That would be nice.
funny how despite the 20 year gap AOE1 still looks better with brighter colors and more detailed sprites...
First off. Thank you for revisiting this game. It is my favorite AOE in terms of style. It does a great job giving off a "Rise of Man" kind of vibe. The only other AOE that gave me this feeling was AOEO, despite it being cartoonish. AOE2 has superior mechanics. But I really like AOE 1's style.
I like the new graphics. But I would prefer a higher contrast colorset. I'm not a nostalgia purist critic but I like bright easy-to-discern colors.That's what made this game distinct from AOE2.. It kinda looks like AOE2 now with washed out colors.
If you could tweak the graphics slightly, as well as offer some AOE 2 improvements (Gates and Markets!!!!) -- I Promise you to buy this game (Even though I already have UPatch which is basically the same thing)

i was always losing in this game back in the 90s because i was taking time to enjoy the graphics and the map! now i will be very happy to do it again! :D
p.s i used AOE 1 to pass all my history exams in high school (in Greece) because i reproduced all the major battles of Alexander the Great vs the Persians in AOE! oh the memories! the teacher and the student where left speechless!
