WE PLAYED THIS GAME 15-20 YEARS AGO... IN THAT TIME, THIS GAME LOOKED GREAT... GRAPHICS WERE GOOD... BUT WE NOWADAYS PLAY GAMES IN FULLHD OR 4K.. WHEN WE SEE THE REMASTERED VERSION GRAPHICS DIDN'T LOOK SO GOOD BECAUSE WE USED TO PLAY MORE REALISTIC GAMES.. BUT IF YOU SEE THE ORIGINAL AND COMPARE IT WITH THE REMASTERED ONE.. YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE :))) BUT STILL I DIDN'T IMPERESSED MUCH... I AM WAITING FOR AOE4 TO COME OUT.. THAT, I HOPE, WILL BE GREAT :)
They are still sprites, aren't they? I guess rendered from 3D models with high framerate and in higher resolution. Which, in my opinion, a waste in some ways. Lots of sprites and animations uses so much space. 3D models could look 100% the same, yes, maybe system requirements would have been higher (can't really see the reason though, they would be still lower poly than many games' characters from 2005). 17GB vs a CD size (or smaller?). Crazy. Technical standpoint, Definitive Edition is just... very meh... but I'm looking at it as a hobby game dev. It looks better, the gameplay is a bit more polished and I really love the look of the water.
Ádám Pajor I don't think they are sprites in the definitive edition. They are most likely coded so they behave like the original ones either because of nostalgia reason or because they took a bunch of the original code for the engine.
I honestly like the choppier animations and images in the old version. I wish they did what they did in AoEII HD and just allow HD resolutions with some fixes some to the AI. It just seems over animated and something about the charm of the original is lost in the new version. They buildings I'm okay with, that doesn't bother me really. The water and new character renders. The Original AoE had something about it that was both silly and serious at the same time. The "flaws" that were fixed is what gave it character. Maybe I'm just turning into an old man missing the good'ol days of MSN Gaming Zone
Yeah, I feel like these new graphics contrast the simplicity of the game's design. Higher resolution is not necessarily better. Plus, if they're tying to cash in on nostalgia, it would've been better to keep it the way people remember it.
to be honest they did a good job with the buildings but units are not even comparable, the old units were much more detailed and ironically rich in color, now its a pile of brown and blue...
Graphics look better mostly apart from the flame effect and the units themselves. The water looks amazing and I love the particle effects when the buildings get destroyed. They should have improved the details on the units as well as the animations which look worse than in the original.
The first one is just hilarious. I dont know what it is. It just feels so random . Silent in the beginning. The voices. Sounds of buildings. . It just gave the best ooga ooga buga vibes
It would be cool to see if age of empires could expand all the way from the dark ages to maybe the modern age. With artillery and nuclear bombs. Like archers evolve into machine gunners and stuff.
All the original needed was more frames of animation. I quite like the remake, but there's a lot of things wrong with it. They really needed to fix the path finding. In 1997 it was a pain, but acceptable, but even on a cheap remake these days it detracts so much from the game as to make it regularly unenjoyable.
I can tell they have combine the gameplay of age of empire and the land scenarios and textures of Age of Mythology..that's why this new Age of Empire remake looks so cool.
I prefer the definitive edition, and unlike most people there, i was 11 when age 1 (original in 1997 so) released. It's outdated now. Massively. The remaster is really welcome. Only pathfinding is actually worse (!!!) rest is far superior.
Regarding the thumbnail, I prefer the old Cat design better. More sleek and intimidating. I also think the older version is clearer with trees and many units, despite being less pixels. The newer version looks blurry, but the water is nicer. Although the fish are harder for me to see as an old guy.
KKND! my first RTS! Tzar, Mech Commander, C&C, Stronghold, Age of Mythology, Against Rome, D&D Dragonshard, Armies of Exigo, Spellforce, and yes, Ascencion to the Throne, it is not a must have but it is original with very detailed units and still playing it, I hope they made AttT2 soon someday...
Heroes of MM the first edition would always be my first love haha, that beautiful fairy-tale-like graphic and music are never seen again in all subsequent HOMM titles. And who can forget original C&C with its sexy NOD buildings.
is there a patch or something to keep the original sounds??? I still miss them. its been 20 years and the arrows the mele fighting and the catapult is impossible to erase
The animals look stupid in the new version. Their move in un-natural and it seems they move faster on the map than their actual leg placement. It shows how demanding high resolution is in terms of realistic looking units. The new colors are too saturated. Half of the units are improved in term of animated movement, half were better in the old version. The new music is just not as melodic as the old version (that were real instruments converted to MIDI). Terrain is much better though. It's sad because It seems they really tried to deliver something great. But a it's hard to beat a classic.
I dont like how it feels they paid unnecessary attention to remastering certain parts till it didn't look anything like it did before but at the same time kept the 4 fire pillars but making it look even more awkward. Atleast the old one had an excuse for it.
Floors removed from construction sites, no trails on any projectiles, no impact effect on catapult projectiles. The list goes on. If you do a remake, improve everything and "remake" the stuff you don't like, don't straight out leave stuff out because this literally doesn't feel like AoE 1.
I completely disagree. De is much better but it lacks features for a remaster. A remake will be much better and they can make a lot of money. If they fix a lot of issues and bugs everyone will be playing it.
They shall add gates. Automatic farm reseeding, more army formations. Less lag and fix spectator mode. 3 thousands spectator mode. Add replays and recording. Make walls even cheaper and less high level terrain so you can make more buildings. Make walls being build a little faster and better path finding.
You don't need to run the game in 4K. The sprites are all rendered in 4K. Your game resolution and zoom factor thus only determines how much the sprites are scaled down. It's different to modern 3D games, where rendering or supersampling the game in 4K to then produce a 1080p video does indeed make the game look better.
Yes again they are remaking this one, then the second will be out later like Octoberish- just guessing and then the 3rd one remastered around end of the year and then the new age of empires probably in mid 2019. It might be shown in E3 this year
Don't mix up the meaning of remaster and the meaning of remake. AoE II HD is a remaster of the original AoK. AoE Definitive Edition is already a bit more than just remastering the original.
am i the only one who thinks that the original is far superior , i don't why but something about the 3D aspect ,animations and lighting just feels off as a whole... plus i'm a sucker for the old 8 bit sound of the original, i guess you just can't beat nostalgia that easily. cross farms though T_T
Isn't just nostalgia though from the video Id say they did good on the terrain and structures but health bar is meh , the units are insanely worse not only are they not finely detailed like they should be but their also drowned 70% or more of their entire bodies as your player "color" might as well be just a block of color with the unit's name on it like god damn what the hell is that its so ugly (that catapult for example /wrists) then again i suppose they couldn't do better somehow. There's other parts that could of been done better but it's an alright remake i guess always preferred AOE 2 so I'm probably biased into disliking the first one and third one and everything that came after it ... some for good reason and some just cause i hate their looks/plays or cause feel like their just turning into worse empire earth meh ... RTS games are too rare still (especially good ones) so i guess yay for remakes.... god i miss old westwood too '_' good times good times
Art vs graphics. The original had really bad graphics, which greatly limited their designs, but the remake doesn't have as good design work for some of their stuff. The catapults are a good comparison point for this, IMO. In the end, it's a bit of a mix as to which I like from each.
The effects of water look good in the DE, but I prefer the effect of the flames of the old version, the textures of the loincloths of the villagers or the canvas of the storage pit, etc., they look too flat and very little detailed, for example the catapults have golden stripes on the edges of the canvas of the team color in the old version that does not have the DE. There is even a LAG that happens at the end of a melody and start a new melody within a game that retains the DE.
Damn, they re-made almost everything in the game and everyone just complain about the definitive edition like "gone bit to much, don't like the new graphics, original is far better, too much animation etc etc" there's a reason this game called the DEFINITIVE EDITION, if you don't like it just go and play the original, damn
The old one actually looks better in many parts, the horse carts, elephants etc. Just a bit smoother and the fire burning sucks in the new one where as in the old one it rages much more violently.
Definitive edition have lost visual clarity of the original. I know they wanted to make it a little more realistic when it comes to grass etc. but I feel like it doesn't really improve visuals. Also original fruit-bushes looked more distinctive, new ones blend too much with environment. The best improvement is UI. It's nice that they tried to preserve some of the archaic, original feeling of the game. Generally looks better but I think that in some places it's a step backwards.
I kind of prefer that old school look when it comes to old games. That newer graphics kind of removes the feeling of the game. But that just my opinion.
Dude, i thought this game would be THE best.. but it turn out to be a dissapointment for me, i actually liked better the HD version of AoE. There are no formations, NO GATES WTF. The AI is dumb and you CAN'T pass thru narrow spaces with more than 3 soldiers because they all get stuck because only ONE unit can be in a specific place around it and that space is huge for each unit, in the old age you could go thru narrow spaces with a lot of your units making it more realistic and fun, as you can plan your attacks better not depending on how much time you lose trying to make your army go thru the huge hole you just did on the enemy walls. i mean, its not worth it, play the HD version is so much better.
Anyone know if you can get the original on android phone?
6 лет назад
Well, technically, the graphics are better now. But I think the remake looks worse. The models have a ton of details etc but the empty space like grass looks now even bigger and in total, it seems like there aren't even half of the details from the older game. The remake is definitely missing some grass waving in the winds, flowers in the grass, waving trees and leafes and just little details whch would make the world seems like an actual world and not just like an boring 08/18 flash game with Hi-Res textures.
Wow glad to see this video beceause before it I thought that nothing changed with the remake ^^
Yeah, same here!
WE PLAYED THIS GAME 15-20 YEARS AGO... IN THAT TIME, THIS GAME LOOKED GREAT... GRAPHICS WERE GOOD... BUT WE NOWADAYS PLAY GAMES IN FULLHD OR 4K.. BUT STILL I DIDN'T IMPERESSED MUCH... I AM WAITING FOR AOE4 TO COME OUT.. THAT, I HOPE, WILL BE GREAT :)
AOE4 will be the biggest disappointment since AOE3.
you've said it!
I wasted my money. DO NOT BUY THIS SHITTY GAME (AoE DE)
The catapult's sound may have changed, but the scars from that original *whoosh* will take decades to heal
The gathering sound effects, wood, stone, gold are so satisfying to listen to.
It's hard to believe, but original was used 8-bit colors.
rrrrexx and don't forget everything is sprites
They are still sprites, aren't they? I guess rendered from 3D models with high framerate and in higher resolution. Which, in my opinion, a waste in some ways. Lots of sprites and animations uses so much space. 3D models could look 100% the same, yes, maybe system requirements would have been higher (can't really see the reason though, they would be still lower poly than many games' characters from 2005).

Ádám Pajor I don't think they are sprites in the definitive edition. They are most likely coded so they behave like the original ones either because of nostalgia reason or because they took a bunch of the original code for the engine.
Nope they're sprites, confirmed by the devs. Just rendered in 32 different directions. Aoe DE uses the same engine, slightly modified.
Fluff Dawg no wonder the pathfinding is still abismal
Good, that WOLOLO has been retained in Definitive Edition.
Because Age of Empires without WOLOLO is as soldier without rifle :)
Me quedo con el original, puedo pasar el cambio de texturas pero cambiarle el sonido a las catapultas es imperdonable, era un clásico
It's a shame the pathfinding issues are so embedded into the core of the game engine.
But the remake is definitely a slick looking game.
Still something about the catapults that I like better in the old version. Everything else looks amazing. Am I the only one?
Dekmar You're right buddy.
It happens the same to me. I think it's that the old catapult looks more bulky, and the sound of the launching feels better.
I hadn't noticed the difference in the sound, but you're absolutely right! The gold trim and darker wood just looks better too.
The old catapults looked like they were tossing flaming paper balls, so no
The colors are too flat in the remastered version, in the older version there are "lighting" in the textures of the catapult.
The water and new character renders.

yeah, I'd always chose to play the original over the remake because nostalgia
P A T H F I N D I N G
from what I hear, the biggest thing in the remake is having your units not gets stuck on every possible buildinh
well if u look at 3:05 u can see these troops or kinda struggling. They aren't stuck on building but they can barely move x).
Yeah, I feel like these new graphics contrast the simplicity of the game's design. Higher resolution is not necessarily better. Plus, if they're tying to cash in on nostalgia, it would've been better to keep it the way people remember it.
You can play a much better RM game in the old version too. Very hard to bronze @ 12:30 with 25 vills in the new version.
They kept all the core mechanics including the clunky movement, and just made it gorgeous? I'm sold!
to be honest they did a good job with the buildings but units are not even comparable, the old units were much more detailed and ironically rich in color, now its a pile of brown and blue...
The units seem blurry, as do the trees, grass, and berries etc.
Old units look like a mess.
Honestly can't decide, I love how both look
I remember this game I played this when I was 7
im sure you guys miss the "hiii hooo" & "hololo~" voice...
My dad should know about these remakes cause he good at this game.
Not a remake, it is just a remaster with a few enhancements.
No, a remake. New engine, new assets, new everything. They've rebuilt the same game from scratch. Still a humongous waste of money.
Its a remaster , a remake must have an entire different gameplay. Remastering is just adding a few enhancements .
It's the same engine mate, therefore there are still issues concerning pathfinding and stuff.
It's the same engine and the models are 2D but with 32 faces now instead of 8 so yeah. Remaster.
anhvu lengoc as you can see they have remade everything in the new version, hence calling it a remake
Graphics look better mostly apart from the flame effect and the units themselves. The water looks amazing and I love the particle effects when the buildings get destroyed. They should have improved the details on the units as well as the animations which look worse than in the original.
The catapult has better projectile animation in the original game
Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but the only thing I like better about the new one is the water. Everything else looks better on the original.
The first one is just hilarious. I dont know what it is. It just feels so random . Silent in the beginning. The voices. Sounds of buildings. . It just gave the best ooga ooga buga vibes

Welcome to "Rise of Nations"! :-!
for that my friend you have Rise of Nations series
Started playing the original 2 days before. As Kylie Minouge says "Can't get you out of my head"
Wololo hoyoyo
Where can you even get it these days?
wtfduud you can search it in Google bruh
The shadows look worse now, especially the trees.
The water looks incredible, though.
ok
double ok
amen
The shadows look more realistic to me than the original. The original's shadows are way too dark.
DiegoAlanTorres69 fucking brony you dont have opinions here!
Am I the only one to prefer the original over the remake?
All the original needed was more frames of animation. I quite like the remake, but there's a lot of things wrong with it. They really needed to fix the path finding. In 1997 it was a pain, but acceptable, but even on a cheap remake these days it detracts so much from the game as to make it regularly unenjoyable.
The fire is so bad xD
@Plautus egal nah boomer
It looks bad in both versions. The older isn’t necessarily better.
AoE 2 HD is the best of all time :D nice balance and a lot of fun in all Matches !
All I need now is a definitive edition for Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds...
I like how thre artstyle stayed true to the original. I hope AoE 2 gets the same treatment!
Tho unit pathfinding could have been improved...
Regarding the thumbnail, I prefer the old Cat design better. More sleek and intimidating. I also think the older version is clearer with trees and many units, despite being less pixels. The newer version looks blurry, but the water is nicer. Although the fish are harder for me to see as an old guy.
wow the units look like giants compared to trees and buildings
Ah, the hours and days I passed in playing AoE II: The Age of Kings and its Conquerors' Expansions.
The time I passed reading its files...
Good times.
You can buy AoE 2 HD Collection on Steam then!
store.steampowered.com/app/221380/Age_of_Empires_II_HD/
Some of the changes are for the better. Others are not. For example, the units in the old version actually have far more natural skin tones.
The path finding is still so stupid. XD
I haven't played the new remake but do they still have those priests who could convert people..it fun as hell !
Kaushik Poojari ofc
Wololo
Priests - the undisputed most annoying unit on AOE, esp. if the other guy has them lol!
1:40 water quality is very impressive
How many hours in AoE, Dune, Heroes of Might and Magic, Kohan, Total Annihilation, Warcraft, Starcraft...
KKND! my first RTS!
AoE1+2 and HoMM3 roughly estimated 2000k+ hours?!
Heroes of MM the first edition would always be my first love haha, that beautiful fairy-tale-like graphic and music are never seen again in all subsequent HOMM titles. And who can forget original C&C with its sexy NOD buildings.
Also don't forget Myth where dwarf bombs make bloody legs flying everywhere
those game are actually good for your brain.
2:29 so real~!
I’ve played so much Galactic Battlegrounds and Age of Mythology since the original that I forgot that it looked like that 😂
Hard to believe they couldn't add some villager and unit variation but looks nice lol
The sound effect of upgrading to a new age is so damn satisfying in the original.
What about the Photonman? xD
Oh boy, I cant wait until it gets released so I can buy it on Steam!
:')
In my opinion AOE 1 has lost a huge amount of his charm with the new visuals. What do you think about it?
Old is gold, the remake is graphically better but nevertheless lacks anything new to add to the classic
Any game where it's human is a giant compare to it's building is a no-no for me
Exactly
is there a patch or something to keep the original sounds??? I still miss them. its been 20 years and the arrows the mele fighting and the catapult is impossible to erase
1:04 The original has better pathing, somehow. I noticed this in my own games while playing the beta too.
Berry gathering has never been so intense.
These improvements are blowing my mind
for me the original :)
I like Definitive Edition better. But for the time, Original edition was a masterpiece.
Floors removed from construction sites, no trails on any projectiles, no impact effect on catapult projectiles. The list goes on. If you do a remake, improve everything and "remake" the stuff you don't like, don't straight out leave stuff out because this literally doesn't feel like AoE 1.
Vast improvement in this remake--everything bigger, more defined, richer artistry. Always an awesome game, now more vividly badass than ever!
I think the original was better. Except the water.
That’s just nostalgia talking.
Did the original have an in-game tech tree?
sadly, 1997 is more realistic than 2018
otuken87 hhhhhhhhh
I completely disagree. De is much better but it lacks features for a remaster. A remake will be much better and they can make a lot of money. If they fix a lot of issues and bugs everyone will be playing it.
ye, so sad
They shall add gates. Automatic farm reseeding, more army formations. Less lag and fix spectator mode. 3 thousands spectator mode. Add replays and recording. Make walls even cheaper and less high level terrain so you can make more buildings. Make walls being build a little faster and better path finding.
@@jimmyquan8897 i doubt they would add all that, as it would change the core gameplay greatly. Although some of your points are valid.
*"Wololo"* -Some old coot
wow i barely started watch the video and... the building animation is terrible. why does the left arm swing backwards?
How do you get so much details in textures when zoomed in, in the Definitive Edition? Are you running the game in 4K resolution?
You don't need to run the game in 4K. The sprites are all rendered in 4K. Your game resolution and zoom factor thus only determines how much the sprites are scaled down.
It's different to modern 3D games, where rendering or supersampling the game in 4K to then produce a 1080p video does indeed make the game look better.
i'm so glad i buyed the original instead of Definitive Edition
Why would they not remaster Age of empires two
do not worry the remake of the two is also planned afterwards.
There already is an Age Of Empires 2 HD on Steam. Has a lot of added content, updated AI, widescreen HD support, and new campaigns to play through.
They said they were totally remastered the game and not just put it in HD
Yes again they are remaking this one, then the second will be out later like Octoberish- just guessing and then the 3rd one remastered around end of the year and then the new age of empires probably in mid 2019. It might be shown in E3 this year
Don't mix up the meaning of remaster and the meaning of remake. AoE II HD is a remaster of the original AoK. AoE Definitive Edition is already a bit more than just remastering the original.
Original age of empires HAS WON
totally agree
sadly its true.
2d sprites will always look more crisp, sharp and detailed than 3d-models
Yosef Yonin I agree with you 👏👏👏
the remastered version still uses 2d sprites...
they look like full 3d to me
am i the only one who thinks that the original is far superior , i don't why but something about the 3D aspect ,animations and lighting just feels off as a whole...
plus i'm a sucker for the old 8 bit sound of the original, i guess you just can't beat nostalgia that easily.
cross farms though T_T
David Gold one word: nostalgia
I totally agree, the original was in my opinion more immersive despite less polished graphics.
And the pathing of the remake is absolute bollocks
Isn't just nostalgia though from the video Id say they did good on the terrain and structures but health bar is meh , the units are insanely worse not only are they not finely detailed like they should be but their also drowned 70% or more of their entire bodies as your player "color" might as well be just a block of color with the unit's name on it like god damn what the hell is that its so ugly (that catapult for example /wrists) then again i suppose they couldn't do better somehow. RTS games are too rare still (especially good ones) so i guess yay for remakes.... god i miss old westwood too '_' good times good times
wee weer It's just nostalgia. I played the old version the last week and was very shitty.
Is not a remake
The buildings shattering. It is even better than AoE II
Damn, they re-made almost everything in the game and everyone just complain about the definitive edition like "gone bit to much, don't like the new graphics, original is far better, too much animation etc etc" there's a reason this game called the DEFINITIVE EDITION, if you don't like it just go and play the original, damn
Does the definitive edition include the Rise of Rome campaigns?
The old one actually looks better in many parts, the horse carts, elephants etc. Just a bit smoother and the fire burning sucks in the new one where as in the old one it rages much more violently.
I hate the goofy animations/design of the units in the remake (especially the villagers). Takes the original charm away.
I hate the newer version of games. the old versions look way better in my opinion. I just like classic games
바다가 진~~~심 확 달라졌음 초기판은 크레파스로 바다를 그려놓은거 같다면 리마스터판은 진~~~짜 바다같음 물결도 일고
which better age of empires definitive edition or age of empires 3
I don't know but the remaster seems like a browser game with those graphics lol
where do i get this remake ??
plz give me the link for AOE defjnitive edition
best game ever ...he made Me
I see a strong case of Golden age syndrome in the comments
Definitive edition have lost visual clarity of the original. I know they wanted to make it a little more realistic when it comes to grass etc. but I feel like it doesn't really improve visuals. Also original fruit-bushes looked more distinctive, new ones blend too much with environment. The best improvement is UI. It's nice that they tried to preserve some of the archaic, original feeling of the game. Generally looks better but I think that in some places it's a step backwards.
I love AOE version 1997 more than AOE DE 2018!
i want a remake of age of empires 2
People say the AI is still lame in the definitive version?
It's true but developers are working on that.
I kind of prefer that old school look when it comes to old games. That newer graphics kind of removes the feeling of the game. But that just my opinion.
Whats with the laggy movement of units in the new version. Looks extremely clunky.
Very good. I like two versions.
Original one is the better
I'm some toughest campaign mode we'll find some reinforcements at that time we r like avengers 🔥🔥🔥
Still not formations?
Does anyone know anything about the aoe2 eddition and when its comming out
Dude, i thought this game would be THE best.. but it turn out to be a dissapointment for me, i actually liked better the HD version of AoE.

I see that the buildings still pop up from a pile of wood
El agua (water) es sin duda lo que mejor se ve, en Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
The villagers in the remake look like betas. Look at that slouched posture.
