Deafheaven - Roads To Judah - Lyrics 1. Violet Why? What have they done? Who has the culprit crossed and forced in another year? Why have some gone, but we are still here? Sitting in a circle of clouds. Enforced. Upon my head. Above my eager eyes. Misplaced. My mind abandoned. Seized to substance. Abused in months of excess. Heat flashes of memory. Breathing in good health. To stop the nightly excess. Pounding on the walls of the temple. Beside the cross. Bury me in the bay. Tempt me with throated swords no longer. Oh, I am weary. I am tired. Tired of leaping. Collections of caskets. I am lurking death. AN ANIMAL. A curse to myself. Harms way for those I cherish. Done. Forced in light. Versed, as the child, on and on. I am home. I am home. 2. Language Games We're still laughing over lore. Still talking about a stream of smoke in the head of a shelter tank, swimmingly bored. Swimming in monotony. Swimming in ponds where our knees scrape the bottom. And still, we swallow the surface. We brought our boredom to the lights. Spoiled the city. Blind to the ocean. Deaf to the heavens. Carving a shut in symphony with memory's masturbation. I've talked it out. Doomed to be a spoiled child. A pupil in the eyes of forever. I knit the fire. I stared into the mirror. A prisoner to the past. A ghost to the present. Put down your glass. Don't raise a toast to your slaving bloodline now. Come to life. Walk the roads to Judah, tonight. 3. Unrequited Bowing to a monolith of grief. Obsessing over discord. Daydreaming of nights that led my staggering steps to nowhere. Bathing in the Summer night’s cold and in the black of night, I feel so old. I feel so worn, quartered, and torn. Hung from the post where my brothers once sung. Cut from the tie where my sanity binds. Stuck in Winter’s Hell, with just you in mind. Waiting in the cold, where we hide behind. I can’t move on, because I can’t shed the weight of myself. There is no such thing as the past, present, or future. There just is, and it never goes away. I thought about you for the rest of the day. Catching my head turning to find you again. I hated myself for it. 4. Tunnel Of Trees Barren, first, the golden nest. The budding breast. Bloated with mystical, imaginary potential that pause in glory with thoughts of ghost, fled. The ebbing, unknown wound. The disfigured prison of resonant debauchery; seeping through cracks, corroded with mold. Blissfully ignorant insanity. Misled prayers for sunshine in the hopeless, godless cathedral of rapid time. Like a tsunami of death, a roaring river of blood, drowning the life out of all that was good.
Jandres Ric hoffimm Stephanie Jackson have you heard the new 2 song leak? I think they are going back to the Demo and Roads To Judah sound and feel. deafheaven lp3 2 song promo, its up online
Roads to Judah is a great example of excellent transition while maintaining a consistent soundscape for discrete immersion. 38 minutes as rich as a 2 hour movie but it feels like you fly happily on its rollercoaster of riffs in just 15 minutes.
As a kid I wrote fantasy stories to Cradle, Dimmu and Emperor. Now, as an adult, I write to this because I find it inspiring, wholly immersive and most importantly I can't hear the words to get distracted. So for me, post this or black that, they more than hold a candle to classic black acts.
As a kid, I listened to man music. As an adult, I still listen to man music. Aka, not this wimpy crap. Not sure why this snoozefest was recommended to me lol
This album gets overlooked far too often. It was so fresh and exciting when it came out since Alcest was really the only other bigger name doing blackgaze at the time. Still holds up and gets way more plays on my phone than sunbather (though admittedly I’m waayyyyy more into atmo-black than blackgaze)
That is the stupidest comment I have ever seen, I have to downlike it but I actually like it because your'e right and I fucking am teaching am streaming and you get a shout out if I am on the Truman Show but I am something fine marijuana from an estuary in Somalia right now, rather high, trying to figure out how to perceive my life through a tunnel of "trees," in a barren wasteland full of internet pirates, and I prefer to inject methamphetamines but my power bottom husband won't enable me as he thinks I need to take a tolerance break. So here I am, limp dick and all, romanticing GEORGE CLARKE and the bitter nostalgia of being addicted to a drug that once I got clean from by way of a VERTIGO retracing of "steps," and realizing I was an addict, but I needed much less than TWELVE, only THREE, meaning ONE, TWO, and THIRTEEN, not fucking some fairy tale of difference of opinion depending on your "priest" or "sponsor" or "translator" who has a certain eye of perception to interpret things, where --- if you have ever been to alcoholcis anonymous, I suggest JOE ROGAN and attempted moderation or DRY DRUNK STONE COLD SOBRIETY and not risking your serenity by way of having to practiice TOLERANCE, instead, look for opportunities to improve your self-worth through charitable acts in your locale, instead of listening to JOE THE PLUMBER tell you about how fucking spiritual he is. It's called BE OF SERVICE or CONTRIBUTE, don't be a negative nancy or the grinch during Christmas because KIDS LIKE FAIRY TALES.
As a black metal musician I can say this has a lot of similarities, the style of playing and vocals don't really coincide with early second wave bands like mayhem and darkthrone but the atmospheric black metal genre like drudkh, fen, and early ulver
+Erebus Music Productions it retains a lot of what makes black metal good, while not really sounding anything like it. It's what a lot of metalcore bands try and totally fail at. My cat is named Erebus lol
Hey deafheaven fans! We're cymbaline a band from Atlanta who makes psychedelic post-metal/shoegaze. Our first EP is on our channel, and I think deafheaven lovers would also like our stuff. I know it looks like I'm spamming, but I'm actually hand typing each comment I post to promote my band. Rock on, deafheads!
I never was a black metal sound fan. Always death metal. But i felt in love with post black / blackgaze sound with this album. Sempieternal love to this kind of metal sound
esto es metal!!!!! guturales prolijos e infernales, bateria al palo y a tiempo mostrando excelencia con cada golpe que marca! y todo buen trabajo de guitarras se sarparon de buenos ! EXCELENTE!
i saw a video of them from like a couple years before Sunbather came out and George was wearing a CLASSY pale blue button-down with a collar, yet he looked SO intimidating. and the room's lights were completely on. it was a fest of some kind, i can't remember, pretty big one, though. even in 2011 or whenever it happened. one of my favorite videos ever.
Personally I find Deafhaven a pure mixture of indie rock and post metal. Being a fan of the Editors, Interpol Placebo, the Wallflowers, and similar bands I do hear a lot of them in these guys.
I really can't pick yet a favorite Deafheaven album, i've listened every one so many times, but this is probably the closest one, nonetheless, all of them are amazing by its own, this band turned into my favorites so damn quickly, love it so much
their demo and first album sound ultra similar to Lantlos Debut and Wolves in the Throne Room's "Two Hunters". Even the acoustic passages, vocals and song structure
I hope their next record goes more toward this and Sunbather. New Bermuda is good, but they seem to be drifting toward a more aggressive sound. I like aggressive music just fine, but that's not what I like about Deafheaven.
early Arcturus, Alcest, Amesoueurs, Panopticon, Botanist, Altar of Plagues, Liturgy, Wolves In The Throne Room, Agalloch, Woman Is The Earth, Alda, Apocyntion, Krallice, Ash Borer, Caladan Brood, Summoning. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy most of these.
Astaroth Belial Agraz cmon most of these band are not even close to Deafheaven. Some of them like Ash Borer e.g. are trve and evil. Maybe only Alcest and Liturgy to some extent may be rated as similar from your list (don t know about Woman Is The Earth and Apocyntion. I would add An Autumn for Crippled Children, Harakiri for the Sky, So Hideous.
I just wrote post-black metal bands, all bands on my list dwell on the same lands as Deafheaven, different approaches, but still. Apocynthion's first single is honestly the BEST blackgaze song I've heard in my entire life.
I wish the vinyl version would be mixed well. I got the clear vinyl and it sounded horrible. :( I already have Sunbather and New Bermuda, but this album is just beautiful. If anyone has one of the bone/cream versions of vinyl, please let me know how they sound.
Part of me wishes Nick stuck around with band a little longer but also have no complaints with where Deafheaven has gone. Plus we might not have gotten Whirr in the first place.
I would associate this group more with Godspeed!..., Pelican, and Sigur Ros before I would consider them even remotely close to any sort of evolution of Mayhem, Darkthrone, Watain, etc... Not that I think that this group is BAD, i just think that it gets a bad wrap from being mis-identified. They're not "black metal", they're "post-metal/ rock" and I just think that most people may not realize the difference yet, and get pissy because they think that the band is trying to pass themselves off as "black metal" or some 'evolution' of it.
+Josh Schulz that's not the fucking point. so what if they have blast beats...? I said they were "post metal" not "post rock" didn't i? so a band can't experiment and combine other genres and be classified something else? just because a group has a piano solo in a song doesn't make them classical for it. the overall direction that this band goes for is very progressive and had the same formulae as most post rock with some metal elements thrown in.
+Alex Wayne Tbh, no. lol. I was just simply arguing the fact that everyone shits on this band because they think that they are "trying to be black metal" and I don't think that is the case... I don't think they are 'trying' to be anything, they are experimenting/ mashing together different sounds to what they like. The black metal "community" and Burzum 'fanbois' try to hate on anything that sounds remotely different from what black metal sounded like 20 years ago. Music changes and evolves, it doesn't stagnate. Otherwise, we would still all be listening to classical music and wearing our frilly frocks, lol.
Is there a version without the "too much" drum from 4:20 ? That would be great ! Anyway their second album is excellent ! I would like to listen this one without the tadatadatdatdatdatdtatdatdatdtatda
Btw, this "tadatadatdatdatdatdtatdatdatdtatda" is called blast beat, a common stylistics in the more extreme metal genres, and different versions are very uncommon in the latter.
everywhere i look, this band are described as 'black metal', but what even is atmospheric metal? its like its suggesting no other form of metal is atmospheric lol?
GregCerresin _1 Sounds more like Shoegazing and Black Metal blended together and we got this. Yeah it's not Black Metal but that doesn't mean people should get butt hurt and rant about how much it sucks or how amazing it is, really they should enjoy it and move on.
so why do people call this black metal? is it because of the tremelo guitar picking and or blast beats? this sounds too pretty to be metal of any genre
You already named off two of some of the reasons that it is metal. Music genres are defined by what instruments and the way they are played, and also the vocals. You not liking it does not equate to it not being metal.
So if I started a band covering childrens ryhmes using blast beats With walls of blurred tromelo guitar picking as well as harsh witchy vocals I can be black metal as well? Sweet happy black metal here I come
I really try to like that since there's such a buzz around this band but honestly... I can't tell any difference between this and sunbather and the new album coming out later this year... the vocals are soooooooo monotone and annoying... I like the guitar melodies but to me all of their songs sound just like one big guitar harmony... they all sound the same ! and Live... oh boy... the singer makes soooooo many weird feminine moves and he wears leather gloves... and he's just not very good at all...
+BOB SAPPSUX Your opinions are great, but you can't say the singer isn't good. Try screaming the way he does for 45 minutes straight, without losing your voice for the next three days.
+Josh Schulz Not only the singing. He has a lot of charisma and stage presence. I also like George's voice. The production of vocals isn't that great on the first 2 albums, but that's often done purposely in this style. I like the new album best.
+Josh Schulz I do enjoy his lyrics, which is also important for a singer. I was just commenting on the vocals themselves, because the comments were about the vocals. I am guessing Bob is secretly attracted to George. The fact that he criticizes him for making "feminine" moves is the classic type of thing a guy will say who is trying to repress feelings of sexual attraction.
Lisa O LOLLLLL and I saw them live once and I don't think he has a lot of charisma since everybody (me included) in the venue couldn't care less for deafheaven... anyways you have the right to have your own taste and opinion and I respect them, I just don't share them
The vocals still suck. Trying for sorrowful emotion but ultimately repetitive, monotonous and aggravating. The most black metal aspect of their sound and, perhaps for that reason, the most out-of-place. I want to like this because the talent displayed overall is undeniable but this album would work better as an instrumental. Sorry.
Slime Devourer Euronymous was just a lame ass, edgy teenager who's band made music that was second rate to Darkthrone or Burzum so shut the fuck up you homophobic piece of shit.
Deafheaven - Roads To Judah - Lyrics
1. Violet
Why?
I am home.
I am home.
2. Language Games
We're still laughing over lore.
3. Unrequited
Bowing to a monolith of grief.
4. Tunnel Of Trees
Barren, first, the golden nest.
No, you may not sat that.
Explosive, dynamic, perfect for intense sweater-knitting.
Brutaful.
A perfect description.
Violet is just mindblowing
spot on brother, they have never bettered this song
yeah, might be my favorite Deafheaven song, period.
Such a nice profile pic, mate.
dare i say Roads to Judah made more of an impression on me than Sunbather? explosively beautiful.
this is true for me, I love Dream House and I love Sunbather but as a whole I like Roads to Judah better.
That's absolutely true.

I would say New Bermuda is their best but who am I to judge which work of art is better than another.

Even better than Sunbather (For me).
Awesome material.

faunbudweis I smell a neck beard.
so this is what they call black metal now? thats sure changed.
i like this though
THIS is NOT Black Metal. The sound is deceiving but the track titles and lyrics tell the truth
GregCerresin _1 this is atmospheric metal bruh
everywhere i look, this band are described as 'black metal', but what even is atmospheric metal? its like its suggesting no other form of metal is atmospheric lol?
GregCerresin _1 Sounds more like Shoegazing and Black Metal blended together and we got this. Yeah it's not Black Metal but that doesn't mean people should get butt hurt and rant about how much it sucks or how amazing it is, really they should enjoy it and move on.
so why do people call this black metal? is it because of the tremelo guitar picking and or blast beats? this sounds too pretty to be metal of any genre
Miguel ramirez It's a blend of genres. It is most certainly metal though.
It's sounds like an emo kids soundtrack to a breakup. What makes it metal? His screaming? I tried listening to this again but it puts me to sleep
You already named off two of some of the reasons that it is metal. Music genres are defined by what instruments and the way they are played, and also the vocals. You not liking it does not equate to it not being metal.
+ghostbusterz just because you scream over guitars it doesn't make it metal.
So if I started a band covering childrens ryhmes using blast beats
With walls of blurred tromelo guitar picking as well as harsh witchy vocals I can be black metal as well? Sweet happy black metal here I come
I seen them in royal oak and this band is just plane shit there sound all all messes together no clarity at all .
+Greg Brooks And yet you sought them out on RUclips.
Lisa O Don't forget George's awesome lyrics. Such a poet.
Sorry.
Kurt Rivero someone doesn't get contrast
I understand contrast perfectly fine. Sometimes it works to the music's benefit. Other times it doesn't ie. here.
Kurt Rivero , Try Altar of Plagues - mammals, maybe you would like the vocals more, MAYBE ;)
Julien Field Is that the name of the band or an album?
+Kurt Rivero Altar of Plagues is a band. Mammals is one of their albums.
Hipster Metal LOL
idiot
gay metal rather than black metal
stfu and let the music grow. without experimentation,ur so called MANLY/STRAIGHT metal wouldnt exists. show a bit of respect. jackass.
Jagnes Leblanc ye, absolutely right, these emo bitches could not lick the feet of Fenriz or Euronymous
Kathayne636 thats what it is, bad ass or not ;-) dont take me wrong, I am happy the LGBT community have a band they can identify with :-)
Can't tell if you're insulting or just stating...
Slime Devourer Euronymous was just a lame ass, edgy teenager who's band made music that was second rate to Darkthrone or Burzum so shut the fuck up you homophobic piece of shit.
