The fact the King Diamond and Mercyful Fate aren’t as big as Iron Maiden or Metallica or as acknowledged, is a crime unto itself
It's mostly because his falsetto voice is a polarizing "love it or hate it" kind of thing.
I wholeheartedly agree, Mercyful Fate and King Diamond are leagues above anything Iron Maiden and Metallica made

The voice is one but not the only reason I think. The music itself is way more complex than IM and Metallica (enigmatic harmonies, constant rhythm changes, song structure, etc.). Yet, the lyrics are not for the mainstream metal fans IMO.

This album is a masterpiece from start to finish.. I listened to The eye of the witch in a radio station program back in 1990 and was totally blown away.. Ive never heard something so haunting before.. I am fan from that day.. It was an errie night. The whole concept of the album and the music is a like a time machine

We all know the voice is magnificent and enchanting..but the song structures are strong..
And the synths and guitar tone are top notch..
Nobody talks about how all the KD albums have wonderful artwork/paintings as albums cover. These are still very unique, back then they were really stunning and you knew it was something special by the albums cover alone.

Fatal portrait
The production on this album is Crystal clear ☆ to me the EYE is kind diamond's cleanest album
Electric drums. Snowy Shaw was disappointed that for his first recording with KD that King wanted to use the electric drums.
Many thanks to the guys at Metal Blade for these wonderful releases. I already have those remasters released in 1997, but these ones are in perfect original sound quality. Everything very clean and audible. I bought all King's CDs and both Mercyful's studio cds. I thank you from my heart...thank you \,,/ \,,/
I cannot get over jus how fucking amazing this album is. Omg, masterpiece is an under statement. The whole album, every song is magnificent
King is Historically accurate with every reference to Human past, each album could be a movie but too bad people don't want to deal with the fascinating dark side of the shit we believed.
I have one of those hoverboards with built in speakers and the other day I was cruising down the streets on it with this album playing. I got some interesting looks from people. lmao.
well.... After 3 Great ones, this one isn't as Good as those. I did a video on King Diamond But didn't really talk about every album fully.

Interesting, this is the album that got me hooked too. I would have shied away from his other works but this was sublime.

Had this in vinyl when i was a young man. Solid LP. Insanity though is one of the most beautiful instrumentals i have ever heard in my life.

One of my elected from the King's royal pantry; I remember that back in late 1990, most of the big Metal mags in Europa responded '''meh'', with instances of 3-star reviews, obviously neglecting its uniqueness in the KD's gallery of masterpieces that decade. Bought the album at once and I was like '' have they gone deaf and dumb in the head?'' - but then I reckoned/remembered they had their very own up their rears, drooling over prettyboyhairmetal... not mentioning any names, but you know who they were. To quote Trouble,''...all is forgiven''. The Opus has outlived the scorn and spite.

I can listen to this kind of shit all day long! It feeds my inner beast and put me in my focus/trance/concentrated metal mode. Good for the writing and general working.

I got this K.D. The Eye CD for free because it was the only thing the then-newfangled CD shop around the corner even HAD to sell my dad his new fancy-shmancy SONY hi-fi CD player station . And I ended up ripppin' up King Diamond and Mercyful Fate for the rest of my M-f'n' life!
This album always had KD’s most consistent and strong songwriting. No filler unlike some of the other records. It actually gets better with age.
The main guitar riff of The Trial is so evil sounding. Andy LaRocque is super underrated.
The True Metal aficionados know " Andy Larocque is on a Whole other level of Guitar Skills. Pete Blakk also Amazing, Michael Denner, and Hank Sheeman also Awesome Axemen.
Great album, takes a few listens to "get it," when it finally dawns on you how simply amazing it really is...

I was about 11 when I first heard this and I was hooked I was into metal anyway but my God this took it to a whole other level for me . I love the king.
40 years. King has given us just short of 40 years of amazing music. Not forgetting Denner, Sherman, Ruzz, LaRoque, Weed, MICKY DEE!!, Snowy Shaw, DeAngelo, Mighty Matt Thompson...etc. Not to mention the bond with Metallica

I heard this album after the Grayeyard album and was totally reeled in and blown away! That was like 20 over years ago. Been loving Kd stuff ever since.
That's the first album I've got when it came out and I listened to it so much that I think I wear the tape until it break. Later I found a original copy of fatal portrait in a record shop, and I think I will buy myself a new copy of the other albums, with the older merciful faith ones too.

I’m more of an extreme metal guy but I got to see KD live a few years ago and they absolutely ruled! They did a live witch burning and had a giant pentagram hanging in the back. The guitar tone was album quality as well.
Well Metal Sucks did rate Melissa and DBTO as the top 2 Extreme Metal albums of all time. What say you. I say it's mostly a pioneer nod because King got so dark he was on the "Filthy Fifteen" as one of two bands mentioned as "occult" alongside Venom; those 2 really inspired so much metal post debut albums.

@@tythealkemist9856, no I would not consider KD extreme metal. I think they contributed a lot to develop the culture that would later spawn it though. When I think of extreme metal it needs to meet a certain aesthetic. Harsh vocals, whether they are deep growls (ex. Deicide) or higher pitched shrieks (ex Dark funeral), fast tempo and blast beats. Heavy guitar crunching or maelstrom tremolo riffs.

Damn, That ending line in The Trial gives me chills every time lol "can you tell me WHERE'S THE PROOF..? ? ?" It really is one of the most powerful questions (imo) anyone can ever ask regarding claims and assertions. ESPECIALLY, "extraordinary" claims..
Just brilliant lyric writing and story telling. And conveyance of emotions. But I'm genuinely extra sensitive about music 😂 I've tried to get some friends to wrap their minds around this album's brilliance, Some have "liked" it, But not like me lol. I think a lot of more "normal" ears have a hard time adjusting to the falsettos so it sets them back a bit. Not me tho 🤣 when I first heard KD playing in the background on a radio station, I stopped in my tracks, walked over with my ears and mind totally glued, sat down and just listened until the song was over. It was "Arrival". For me, it genuinely was a profound moment of discovery lol.
Take yourself out of town, find a desolate farmette, aim for a late night when the moon is bright, find a large oak tree to sleep upon and let your mind and imagination slip away into the darkness. Happen to hear a Barn Owl in the distance you are in the right spot for chills. Add King Diamond & Mercyful to the phone, walkman, car stereo, whatever ya got and enjoy the night. Happen to wake up with something in your lap that is not supposed to be there I would say had one Hell of a night. Realize then and there you are cursed by the Eye of the Witch. Loads of fun listening to King and Crew !!!!

Already in the opening song....a solo starts with alien sounding tunes then the seamless transition at 2:15. Gets me every time. EDIT: actually...the guitar tunes are absolutely out of this world. Andy and Pete are wizards.
