    Note: Apologies for the use of the word "super" on occasion : )
    The last bastion of creativity once you have the drone of your dreams is filters. You will definitely need ND filters for smooth, filmic motion in your clips and a polarizer filter will add that "Je ne sais quois"!

    6. ND 64 + Polarizer (6 Stops)
    7. ND 1000 (10 Stops)
    8. ND 2000 (11 Stops)
    ND Filters
    These are used purely to reduce the light entering the lens and onto the camera sensor. This helps to get that smooth film look by allowing slower shutter speeds when shooting video. Bright sunny days means fast shutter speeds and the video looks clunky. Add an ND filter and buttery smoothness awaits : )
    A good ND filter will not affect the colour balance or sharpness of your media and the Freewell filters do a great job with this.
    Polarizer Filters
    The aim of the polarizer filter is to reduce the glare from glass, shiny surfaces as well as grass, leaves and even minute water particles in the sky.
    The effect is without that glare, the natural, vibrant colours are allowed to shine though. However, it is important to be aware of your positioning to the sun when using polarizer filters on a wide angle lens. Watch the video for more information.
    In this video, I show some examples of 5 and 8 second exposures taken at around 20 metres using the DJI Mavic 3 Cine drone. Amazing results and wirthy of buying yourself a set of these filters alone!

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  Год назад +1

      @@Photostrated I assume you mean growing and not drowning lol? The only advice I would give is this.
      The video I mentioned is compelling enough for me as I love diving. However, consider adding light, easy listening music to the background whilst keeping the original audio. You can increase or decrease the intensity of the music depending on what's happening.
      It would also be good to see or hear information throughout the dive(s) such as location, depth at any point, conditions etc.
      You could do this via a spoken narrative added during edit or simply including text here and there.
      Editing software titles such as Vegas Pro have a "text to speech" feature which is amazing. It has multiple languages (and accents) and is good if you're not comfortable speaking or narrating for the video. They're accurate and realistic.
      If you are comfortable being on camera, perhaps start with a short introduction to each dive with a run through of where you are, what you are diving for, what kit you are using and so on. This will attract both experienced divers and newbies looking to learn or simply binging and enjoying other people's experiences.
      Maybe use screen recording software such as Camtasia to show the dive location on Google Earth at the start.
      Whereas the dives are already interesting, adding some of the above might make them more so and more "shareable". All just my opinion of course but I hope this helps 😁👍

    Great video! Finally someone that knows how important ND filters are. It’s impossible to film anything with a drone without a ND filter during the day time. All video must have proper shuttle angle to avoid playback problems with high hertz devices and to get the natural motion that humans sees. I made a video guide for ND filters and gray card for perfect colors that anyone can print out and take it when filming. One click on the gray card in post you get perfect white balance. Enjoy it and happy filming! 🎥

    Hi there, thanks for the video. Are the lower ND (think 4-32) mostly for video then? I feel like i've read somewhere that most don't recommend using ND filters for stills, just for video. But perhaps I am mistaken.

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  2 года назад +1

      Hi Desert and yes, lower ND's are generally just for video. They have no benefit for stills unless you need slower shutter speeds. That's when you'd use the stronger ones such as the ND1000 and ND2000.
      Saying that, if you used a strong ND filter for video that gave a shutter speed of say 1/5th sec coupled with a slow frame rate, you get a very strange look to the video that has been used in some movie sequences (sci-fi for example).

  • @BlairAir

    Also doesn't a variable aperture reduce the need for ND Filters, since a higher Fstop will help reduce a fair amount of light (without going to the limit where other issues arise)

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  2 года назад

      Correct. That's one of the big benefits of the Mavic 3 over the Air 2s. However, due to the doubling effect of the M43 sensor and diffraction possibilities with smaller apertures, I would try not to go past f5.6 (f11 full frame equivalent).

    Does the gimbal cover/jock strap still work with the filters when the drone is folded away?

  • @BrunoVilelaIS
    @BrunoVilelaIS 2 года назад +1

    Did you use the nd 2000 filter? I'm thinking about picking 2 of those freewell filters and I'm tending to pick up the cpl filter and the nd 1000 filter since I got the fly more combo with the 4, 8, 16 and 32 nd filters from dji. Do you think the 2000 would be a good one? Thank you. (I know it's all related with what you will do and the light conditions you are facing, but I really don't know wether I really would need a 2000 nd. Thank you.

    • @NickStubbs
      @NickStubbs  2 года назад +2

      Hi Bruno,
      I didn't use it but I think the 2000 may be a touch too strong (although it's only one stop difference). The 1000 is enough to get an 8 second exposure in most weather/light. 8 seconds is the longest you can go with the Mavic 3 anyway.
      Plus, 8 second exposures are rare as you need still weather and they can be hit and miss depending on the flight characteristics of each drone (I believe some differ a fraction in how they fly and hold position but I may be wrong).
      Any fluctuations in light can be controlled via the aperture so to answer your question, I think the 1000, CPL and DJI filters will do you well.
      Hope this helps 👍

      "Good question. You should open the aperture and ramp up the ISO to brighten the exposure whilst flying to the scene and once there with the shot set up, adjust accordingly. Try to set the ISO to as close to 100 as possible for best results once shooting.“

  • @QippysChannel
    @QippysChannel 2 года назад +1

    My only question is , how easy is it to fly the drone to the location of the subject with the ND1000 filter, I would imagine it would be really dark to fly it before we get to the spot, how do u generally manage that, or do u tend to only fly closer when u use this super dark filter just to be safe?

      @@NickStubbs That makes perfect sense to me, an explains why the 6-9 stop doesn't have a similar mark. Next up, I am interested in the DJI branded Wide-angle adapter for M3. It may degrade optics, but the creative potential intrigues! 👌

    Hey Nick, somewhat dissapointed in the 2 to 5 stop standard Freewell variable ND filter without polerizer when trying to focus using the 7X camera, the straight ND's (single piece of glass) not a problem but even when I use auto focus then swap to manual focus to eliminate hunting the variable ND just won't focus, I suspect it's got something to do with the two glass filters rotating, have you experienced this yourself?

      Hi Andy, I only had the Mavic 3's as review copies so I don't have one any more. I do remember, when I was doing long exposures with the ND1000 I had trouble focusing. I just increased the ISO to allow the lens to "lock on" focus and then reduce it before shooting. Hope that helps a little.

      I can't really compare these to the DJI sets as the Freewell filters are a combination of polariser and ND filters whereas the DJI ones are just ND filters.
