I can't tell you how bloody refreshing it is to hear a review from somebody who actually understands photography, but most importantly to me - cameras. RUclips is currently filled with reviews from people who simply don't understand the technical side of cameras and how they work. I'm also really happy you touched on the sharpest aperture(s) for the lens, been looking for someone to do that since release. Thanks! P.S. - I'd be really interested if you could test the h.265 codec recorded using d-log at high speed to see how the compression holds up with a lot of motion. I know for a fact that h.264 suffers with smearing in the M3, although I have a good feeling h.265 shouldn't suffer with that issue. Subbed.

I think this smearing issue could simply be to fast movement with a relatively slow shutter speed. A simple case of motion blur. I tested this flying past a red lighthouse at speed yesterday, in h.265/log, and there was no bleeding. I had to use a fast shutter speed as I had no ND filters.

Hi Nick, this is a fantastic video and I have learnt a fair bit on drone videography and photography, being a landscape photographer primarily I would say drone photography is defiantly a bit different, I totally agree with you about trying to pullout the shadows when actually you should not even in normal landlocked photography, I love the mood of shadow and highlights and something i see many disregard when actually it is so natural. great video and thx for sharing, just bought my mavic 3 with flr more combo, I also have the phantom 4 pro and the mavic air 2, I am so excited to get my hands on this amazing drone and doing a review on it as well.

How does it compare to the bigger DJI ‘S offerings. I’d like to use it and DJI cpv for documentary filmmaking? Are they good enough for documentary film making and real estate photography. I expect to expand in a year to access bigger jobs but for now it’s small documentaries. I bought the cine model.
Hi David, I have just been comparing like for like stills and video from the DJI Inspire 1 with X5 (micro four thirds) camera to the Mavic 3. In all honesty and after a bit of scrutiny, the results from the Mavic 3 are the same if not better than the Inspire 1/X5 combo. Newer tech and all that. As for documentary and real estate photography, yes, 100%. Back in 2004 I had a 6mp photo put on a billboard for a Spanish Real Estate company. It looked superb. These days, most images go online or in magazines so the property images, including dusk/low light shots, from the M3 will look amazing in print. I also had to use the DJI Mini 2 to finish a short ad last year after my Inspire got damaged at sea. Results looked superb when the 4k footage was edited and compressed to 1080p...phew! The best way to look at the Mavic 3 is a superb 5k, 10bit video camera and excellent 20mp stills camera (even in low light) on a tripod in the sky. All the "bells and whistles" (mostly coming next year) are just a bonus.
can you show us all how you edit your video please, it would be great to see how you sharpen the footage of the cruise ship for example. subbed by the way, it is always nice to listen to a familiar english voice.
I'll see what I can do but the sharpening was pretty basic. Vegas Pro has a simple but quite effective sharpening tool and I must admit the cruise ship needed a fair bit.

Lots of great information, thanks! I’ve had one since DJI aired the introduction to it but haven’t taken it out of the box. I do fly professionally but just for mapping. All I’ve used for the last 5 years is p4pro’s with decent success. What are your thoughts on using this drone for making ortho mosaics?
@@NickStubbs I believe you may have inspired me to keep the mavic 3 and try to broaden my horizons. I typically just fly 100% autonomous, perhaps I’ll try my hand at photography. Battery life was one reason I bought it, I got the fly more combo, should be plenty of time in the air. I have like 10 batteries for my phantoms but all the up and down gets old. Have you done any solar inspection? I’m going to be getting a bunch of solar farm inspections coming up soon, I’ve been hesitant on buying an M300. I really don’t want to have to charge too much for my services. Is your mavic enterprise capable of doing solar inspection?
@@wakefulonesees Do you know what, I would happily have the Mavic 3 for JUST photography/time lapses. The amount of creativity for landscapes you could get from the air would keep you going forever. If you mean just photographing solar farms, any drone would do, including the Mavic 3. Depends what they need. ...and the Enterprise isn't mine. I borrowed it for the video 😉👍

I am coming from the Mavic 2 zoom and I can truly testify that the Mavic 3 makes my zoom feels like a toy lol, the Mavic 3 is beast for drone!! And I really like the way it looks!! It’s a beautiful drone! That was my wife first response when I first unbox it 😂
@@chrismacky7548 yeah I sold my Mavic 2 zoom two weeks ago lol! Also thank you for the detail camera lessons! The a few channels on RUclips with the nighttime shots complaining about the noise when they bump up the IS0 they are trying to get rid of the shadows in the low light shots, but I never understand that because the camera is reproducing what it sees and it is seeing the shadows lol! And when they can’t get rid of the shadows the complain about the Mavic 3 camera being a let down and that they are not impressed!! 😂 I need to share your video on there channel if I can! And let them see the Mavic 3 in the hands of a real photographer!!👍🏾
Not sure if there is a dead pixel on the m3 image. in the sliced comparison video you can see it at 20:06 going up as the drone goes forward over the sidewalk in front of the building with coloured (red) lightning at the front of the building. Or maybe it´s just noise due to night light capture (hot pixels). not sure. Loved your tip for locking the point of interest at center of video. Lots of tips in your video. Thank you very much.
Hi Bruno and thanks for your comments, I appreciate it 👍 I think most of, if not all of my cameras, even the 5DIV, have hot or dead pixels. Like you say though, it could due to multiple long exposures so they could just be hot. Hope so. Anyway, thanks again and have a great evening 👍

It’s so refreshing to see a review of the Mavic 3 by a fellow UK Commercial drone pilot and you now have a new subscriber. I have taken the plunge for the Mavic 3 to replace my Mavic 2 Pro. From my flights, I agree with all you say, though I have not yet had a chance to test night flying results. I am really pleased with the quality of the drone outputs (pending the promises given for the major update to follow). However, I am very disappointed with the controller, which I believe should have far more functionality/ customisable buttons. It is so frustrating not being able to be able to change aperture setting by the wheel as you can with the M2P. Maybe DJI was hoping we all had the money to pay for the new Smart Controller!

DJI have announced that they are extending the warranty and care refresh for early purchasers. They are clearly listening to people so maybe more will be added to the firmware updates in 2022. @@NickStubbs You know when I first learned about the price I was one of them that started complaining, but I said let me give it a try if I don’t like it I will return it, I have 14days to do that! So I ordered the standard version and received it three days after ordering! The first time I took it out the package I knew it wasn’t going back to DJI, it just looks like a beast and the camera you can tell it’s something special! And it is, it’s amazing to say the least! I can’t wait to see what the updates is going to do to this beast machine, I mean if it’s performing like this now out of the box and there is like 50% more to add with the updates!! Oh wow!!
@@mr02gixxer1000 Couldn't agree more. The main thing is that it is a high quality camera that just happens to fly really well and for a long time. All the other stuff is a bonus that allows creatives to explore, have fun and produce some very cool imaging 👍

I could repeat what Tom Day said but I'd rather add something : on my Imac screen, in full frame 4k, your footage with the long focal lens (at 7x) looks amazing (just need to understand the best frame rate to make the backround more "fluid") ! Of course, I'mot sure it could support a movie theatre wide screen but I defenetly want to use it to bring more diversity in my editing ^^
Thank you Christophe, I really appreciate your feedback with regards to the iMac. That's superb. The faster the frame rate (30p, 50p, 60p etc), the more fluid the video will look. The reason filmmakers use 24p in big movies is to NOT look too fluid (like home video). 24fps (frames per second) makes the footage look more "film like" and even a bit jittery. The small 162mm lens/camera on the Mavic 3 only shoots at 30p which is fairly fluid so use that. If you need to mix it with UK 25p footage, you will have to adjust the frame rate in some software. Hope this helps and thanks again.

Thank you for saying that the beginners need to get the Air 2S, not Mavic 3 or Mavic 3 Cine. I'm sick of novices purchasing the Mavic 3 series with zero experience and uploading lousy videos on RUclips just like they did with Phantom 4 Pro series.
I would love to take the inspire off your hands for free to try and repair, I have incurable cancer so I carnt work so I have time to dedicate to trying to get it to work. That’s of course if you still have it but if it’s going in the bin then would you consider donating it to me please ?
Do you know what Ian, if I had it, I'd give it to you but sadly the insurers wouldn't release it. I think the company that checked it prior to my payout do exactly what you'd do and try to salvage/repair it. Stay strong 💪👊✌️
Don't buy it. Over priced with a cheap outdated controller. No Go fly app. What many reviewers don't say is the camera gimbal doesn't rotate horizontal. The Telephoto camera is a gimmick plus you can't save raw. Something is terrible wrong with the small lens on a M43 camera outputting green nature scenes and trees with artifacts and not sharp.
I haven't bought it yet but agree, the price is a little steep and yes, they've used the wrong app. However, right now I'm comparing the footage and stills to my dead Inspire 1/X5/Oly Zuiko 12mm combo and the results are interesting. I will probably do a video on this soon. The point is that for me, I was hoping to simply replace my Inspire with something similar, smaller and hopefully better than the Inspire 1/X5. The Mavic 3 flies more than twice as long, produces stunning footage and great stills, especially at night. That's all I'm personally after. We're all different in our wants, needs and budget I guess. Plus, I think DJI have something else in development...🤔

😂😂 what about the noise in the hi res and hi codecs, not a word about that is it?! Night pictures, almost nobody does have the papers for that night flying. @@nickchivers1820 I think the price surprised/shocked a lot of people.
Tested a Mavic 3 for a week and the H265 provided less compression artifacts and seemed sharper and cleaner overall compared to H264
Very nice collection! Every drones released by DJI has been totally great but the Mavic 3, it's in a league of its own!
Agreed. It has its issues right now but hopefully the firmware update next year will sort them out. Image quality is everything.

The lav mic is actually an old Sony set up that I bought in 2009. Still works well but not available any more.

Hi David, I have just been comparing like for like stills and video from the DJI Inspire 1 with X5 (micro four thirds) camera to the Mavic 3.
In all honesty and after a bit of scrutiny, the results from the Mavic 3 are the same if not better than the Inspire 1/X5 combo. Newer tech and all that.
As for documentary and real estate photography, yes, 100%. Back in 2004 I had a 6mp photo put on a billboard for a Spanish Real Estate company. It looked superb.
These days, most images go online or in magazines so the property images, including dusk/low light shots, from the M3 will look amazing in print.
I also had to use the DJI Mini 2 to finish a short ad last year after my Inspire got damaged at sea. Results looked superb when the 4k footage was edited and compressed to 1080p...phew!
The best way to look at the Mavic 3 is a superb 5k, 10bit video camera and excellent 20mp stills camera (even in low light) on a tripod in the sky. All the "bells and whistles" (mostly coming next year) are just a bonus.

can you show us all how you edit your video please, it would be great to see how you sharpen the footage of the cruise ship for example. subbed by the way, it is always nice to listen to a familiar english voice.
I'll see what I can do but the sharpening was pretty basic. Vegas Pro has a simple but quite effective sharpening tool and I must admit the cruise ship needed a fair bit.

I’ve had one since DJI aired the introduction to it but haven’t taken it out of the box. I do fly professionally but just for mapping. All I’ve used for the last 5 years is p4pro’s with decent success. What are your thoughts on using this drone for making ortho mosaics?

@@NickStubbs I believe you may have inspired me to keep the mavic 3 and try to broaden my horizons. I typically just fly 100% autonomous, perhaps I’ll try my hand at photography.
Battery life was one reason I bought it, I got the fly more combo, should be plenty of time in the air. I have like 10 batteries for my phantoms but all the up and down gets old.
Have you done any solar inspection? I’m going to be getting a bunch of solar farm inspections coming up soon, I’ve been hesitant on buying an M300. I really don’t want to have to charge too much for my services. Is your mavic enterprise capable of doing solar inspection?
@@wakefulonesees Do you know what, I would happily have the Mavic 3 for JUST photography/time lapses. The amount of creativity for landscapes you could get from the air would keep you going forever.
If you mean just photographing solar farms, any drone would do, including the Mavic 3. Depends what they need.

@@NickStubbs solar inspection requires a thermal camera with recording capability and has to be able to detect a certain spectrum of heat. Thanks for your help.

I am coming from the Mavic 2 zoom and I can truly testify that the Mavic 3 makes my zoom feels like a toy lol, the Mavic 3 is beast for drone!! And I really like the way it looks!! It’s a beautiful drone! That was my wife first response when I first unbox it 😂

@@chrismacky7548 yeah I sold my Mavic 2 zoom two weeks ago lol! Also thank you for the detail camera lessons! The a few channels on RUclips with the nighttime shots complaining about the noise when they bump up the IS0 they are trying to get rid of the shadows in the low light shots, but I never understand that because the camera is reproducing what it sees and it is seeing the shadows lol! And when they can’t get rid of the shadows the complain about the Mavic 3 camera being a let down and that they are not impressed!! 😂 I need to share your video on there channel if I can! And let them see the Mavic 3 in the hands of a real photographer!!👍🏾

Not sure if there is a dead pixel on the m3 image. in the sliced comparison video you can see it at 20:06 going up as the drone goes forward over the sidewalk in front of the building with coloured (red) lightning at the front of the building. Or maybe it´s just noise due to night light capture (hot pixels). not sure. Loved your tip for locking the point of interest at center of video. Lots of tips in your video. Thank you very much.

I think most of, if not all of my cameras, even the 5DIV, have hot or dead pixels. Like you say though, it could due to multiple long exposures so they could just be hot. Hope so.

It’s so refreshing to see a review of the Mavic 3 by a fellow UK Commercial drone pilot and you now have a new subscriber.
I have taken the plunge for the Mavic 3 to replace my Mavic 2 Pro. From my flights, I agree with all you say, though I have not yet had a chance to test night flying results. I am really pleased with the quality of the drone outputs (pending the promises given for the major update to follow).
However, I am very disappointed with the controller, which I believe should have far more functionality/ customisable buttons. It is so frustrating not being able to be able to change aperture setting by the wheel as you can with the M2P. Maybe DJI was hoping we all had the money to pay for the new Smart Controller!

DJI have announced that they are extending the warranty and care refresh for early purchasers. They are clearly listening to people so maybe more will be added to the firmware updates in 2022. People power ✌️💪👍

@@NickStubbs You know when I first learned about the price I was one of them that started complaining, but I said let me give it a try if I don’t like it I will return it, I have 14days to do that! So I ordered the standard version and received it three days after ordering! The first time I took it out the package I knew it wasn’t going back to DJI, it just looks like a beast and the camera you can tell it’s something special! And it is, it’s amazing to say the least! I can’t wait to see what the updates is going to do to this beast machine, I mean if it’s performing like this now out of the box and there is like 50% more to add with the updates!! Oh wow!!

I could repeat what Tom Day said but I'd rather add something : on my Imac screen, in full frame 4k, your footage with the long focal lens (at 7x) looks amazing (just need to understand the best frame rate to make the backround more "fluid") ! Of course, I'mot sure it could support a movie theatre wide screen but I defenetly want to use it to bring more diversity in my editing ^^
Thank you Christophe, I really appreciate your feedback with regards to the iMac. That's superb. The faster the frame rate (30p, 50p, 60p etc), the more fluid the video will look. The reason filmmakers use 24p in big movies is to NOT look too fluid (like home video). 24fps (frames per second) makes the footage look more "film like" and even a bit jittery.
The small 162mm lens/camera on the Mavic 3 only shoots at 30p which is fairly fluid so use that. If you need to mix it with UK 25p footage, you will have to adjust the frame rate in some software. Hope this helps and thanks again.

Sorry, I don't have a Mavic 2 Pro. Having 5.4k and some of the latest tech, the Air 2s was the best I had to hand that compared for most people 👍✌️

Thank you for saying that the beginners need to get the Air 2S, not Mavic 3 or Mavic 3 Cine. I'm sick of novices purchasing the Mavic 3 series with zero experience and uploading lousy videos on RUclips just like they did with Phantom 4 Pro series.

I would love to take the inspire off your hands for free to try and repair, I have incurable cancer so I carnt work so I have time to dedicate to trying to get it to work. That’s of course if you still have it but if it’s going in the bin then would you consider donating it to me please ?
Do you know what Ian, if I had it, I'd give it to you but sadly the insurers wouldn't release it. I think the company that checked it prior to my payout do exactly what you'd do and try to salvage/repair it. Stay strong 💪👊✌️
Don't buy it. Over priced with a cheap outdated controller. No Go fly app. What many reviewers don't say is the camera gimbal doesn't rotate horizontal. The Telephoto camera is a gimmick plus you can't save raw. Something is terrible wrong with the small lens on a M43 camera outputting green nature scenes and trees with artifacts and not sharp.
I haven't bought it yet but agree, the price is a little steep and yes, they've used the wrong app.
However, right now I'm comparing the footage and stills to my dead Inspire 1/X5/Oly Zuiko 12mm combo and the results are interesting. I will probably do a video on this soon.
The point is that for me, I was hoping to simply replace my Inspire with something similar, smaller and hopefully better than the Inspire 1/X5.
The Mavic 3 flies more than twice as long, produces stunning footage and great stills, especially at night. That's all I'm personally after. We're all different in our wants, needs and budget I guess.
Plus, I think DJI have something else in development...🤔
