Bodycam: Councilman Arrested After Allegedly Smoking Crack, Passing Out in Car After Court

- Bodycam footage shows the moments Rhode Island police found Matthew Reilly passed out in the driver’s seat of his car with an alleged crack pipe in his hand on Monday. Authorities said Reilly, a now-former Cranston City council member, was arrested and charged with drug possession after the substance found in his car tested positive for crack cocaine and fentanyl. The 41-year-old politician resigned from the city council and his position as chairman of the Cranston Republican Party Thursday after pressure from the mayor and other council members. The Law&Crime Network’s Angenette Levy has the details.

Big respect for the cop that said "A month from now you'll be thanking us." He's so real for that, because I was also neck deep in an addiction, and it took getting arrested for me to see how bad things had actually gotten. I hated the cops that day, but that was what kick started my sobriety. 5 years sober since that day.
I'll have 5 years myself on 5/25. One day at a time. We have to hit rock bottom before we can see the light.
Once he's out of rehab with no job and a police record, I hope he doesn't turn to the pipe again.

I relapsed and lost my wife and 6 month old daughter. She moved out and filed for separation. I immediately went to rehab and got sober. Im now 4 years sober, have 50/50 custody, a healthy relationship with my ex, and the most beautiful relationship with my little girl. Being a single dad has allowed me to have an intimate relationship I may have never had being in the relationship. Sometimes the dark times are just the night before the sun rises. Never give up.

Before bodycams, imagine how many times the cop would have looked the other way just because he's a councilman. He even said "this is being recorded" to indicate he has to actually do his job.
It's just sickening how corrupt-minded cops are. That was his knee-jerk reaction. I'm thankful steps are being made to try to hold them accountable for following the same laws they enforce on the rest of us.

@@benfranklin100 do a little googling lmao, there are a few articles surrounding that arrst, he was officially charged with child molestation of the first degree and a second charge of child molestation of the second degree, and also charged with enticing a person under 16 (they were reportedly 12). Mind you he has not yet been convicted but he was accused by the childs legal guardian and was investigated for a month before being arrested.
I can't imagine the shame and embarrassment this poor man was feeling. Drug addiction does not care who you are and relapse sneaks up on you. I wish him all the best.

The kindness and general empathy he received should be extended to all people suffering from an addiction. Not just people with nice/public jobs.

Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Back in my drug using years, you wouldn't have been able to pay me to even do a line of coke unless I was behind a locked door on private property. I'm the same. My buddy would want to light up while I'm driving. I'd make him wait while I had it tucked under thigh. That's why I never got caught and eventually outgrew my party phase. You can imagine his need to smoke some crack while I drove 20 miles home at the speed limit. Then we'd smoke it all and he'd want more and I'm like dude I'm going home. If you wanted more you should have spent more. You'll always want more.

Yep. Right after the cops arrest you, throw you in a jail cell, humiliate you, the press reports you, etc. So after you go through all that crap because you have an addiction problem, THEN you can start day 1. Because after they do all that to you, your life is basically over anyway as you knew it so you almost HAVE to start all over again with day 1.

Everyone talks about mental health but then in the same hand some people make fun of things like this. The added negative attention of that, including by the people supposed to help you, is so further debilitating, people just could not imagine. “No one knows his story,” is exactly right. We should look at EVERYONE that way. We don’t know what they’ve been thru, or how they’re suffering. I’ve certainly never looked at a homeless person the way I once did. But I’m GRATEFUL for that. ❤️

Prior to this arrest, Matthew Reilly was under investigation for child molestation. This incident happened a week after the investigation ensued. So before someone starts feeling sorry for him because he just went through a divorce and living in a borrowed car. Remember that he was also charged with 1st degree child molestation & 2nd degree child endangerment of a person under the age of 16. The wording for those two charges might now be 100% accurate, but there was 2 charges, a 1st & 2nd degree child molestation charge.

Been in his position before, was working for a financial planning firm and had a secret dope addiction for 8 years or so. Got busted and got clean, actually just made 4 years clean yesterday lol. Best decision i ever made. Hopefully this guy can get the help he needs

I'm very glad to hear that last summer I spent July in a coma from drinking after losing my job in the pandemic I was supposed to die I actually just found a pamphlet from when I was released last August today.

Honestly I feel terrible for this guy…you can tell he had everything. Now his life is slowly falling apart. Prayers to him,I hope he can kick this nasty addiction soon.

Addiction of any kind is devastating; this was a sad day for him but most likely saved his life. It is also against the law so there's that.

I sincerely hope this is his wake up call & he can stay clean from here on out! This is an ugly disease! Anyone who has an addiction needs a good support system! They need all the support they can get but most people look at you as a terrible person. This is not the way to look at it! The most outstanding & most respected can find themselves in this man shoes! Don’t JUDGE! Get busy trying to help them! Don’t close the door in their face when they need you more than ever now!

As a former drug addict that relapsed after 12 years I feel for him. Trauma can bring up old behaviors. I'm glad he is ok and I hope he has the support he need to stay sober❤

The cop is right. "It'll help you in the end." Yup. I had a 15-year addiction, and if I hadn't got caught up in the criminal justice system, I don't believe I would have gotten clean. I been clean 9 years now because of it.
I had a long lasting addiction to but I didn't get caught but made the conscious decision to quit best decision ever

If he relapsed because of an divorce, imagine what he might do with no job, a crack habit, and a police record, it's gonna be a lot to deal with.
It's definitely not worth it. Especially if someone is trying to hide it and has a good job that provides for a roof overhead and food for the family. It not worth the consequences.

Was addicted to crack for over 7 years also suffered severe depression not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin shrooms treatment. after trying out a psilocybin treatment I will be 2 years clean never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms

Did he antagonize them? Did he insult them? Did he act like a spoiled 10 yr old? Did he resist them? Did he spit on them and called them names? Did he try to run from them? Did he pull out a gun on them? Did he mislead them or interfere with their investigation? Was he speeding? Did he ran someone over and drove away? Nothing to do with power. This was not a violent felon.

This is a perfect example, It doesn't matter who you are or how happy you seem or if you "have it all" drug addiction can affect literally anyone from any walk of life. There's such a horrific stigma around addicts that someone like this could never go and get help because it would make headlines that he was in a treatment facility and people would shame him so hard. It's so sad. I truly hope that that man gets better and his life friends around. A relapse is hard but a relapse in the public eye, I could only imagine how horrible it is
