    A calming dragon,really great idea having a defused instead of smoke,. Incents sticks etc seem a little to strong for my liking.

    Phenominal work! Could you elaborate on how to do the scales on a curving neck, or more rounded area?

    • @MattCarves
      @MattCarves  Год назад +1

      Cheers Steve. carving around curves is a bit trickier, if you want it to look realistic I would think about the scales expanding in size on a convex curve, and the oposite with a concave. My personal style I try to hint at realism by putting areas of details in and thus the viewers eye and imagination expands on that and fills in the gaps. Hope that helps

    This is awesome, thanks Matt. I have worked on some hickory axe handle wood to create scales. They have been rounder and far from your diamond shape crispness. I'll try it on my next axe. Cheers Gus, Nelson, nz

    After using a burr like that, how do you clean up the fuzz?

    • @MattCarves
      @MattCarves  2 года назад +1

      I usually finish with a diamond Burr and lightly go over the fuzzys and some times a light sanding. hope that helps. Happy carving 👍

  • @IRISHWARLORD69

    Hey Matt, I'm using your method on a wood handle, a katana sword to be exact, I have the top and sides portions open for the scales but rather (because of oblong shape and creative purpose) than a tubular design I'd like to incorporate a spine type scale on the top of the handle which will transition into the scales you demonstrated.
    Would you have any ideas along the lines of that? Oh, every bit of experience I have doing this is from this video, so far I'm still at "after you practice enough" stage. With no accomplished projects. I've worked with wood my entire life and have done tattoos so I think my progression is going ok. Practicing of course.

    • @MattCarves
      @MattCarves  2 года назад

      Well that project sounds awesome. Yeah the spine spikes sounds great. I did a similar pattern on the smoking dragon I made. Will leave a link for it. Yeah it takes a lot of time to learn, but with your background you have a head start. I think people believe I make these carvings fast but they all take longer than you think.

      @@MattCarves ty, that is helpful. I'm a retired cabinet maker so I do have a lot of experience with routers and mortise, tang and socket chisels but this is a whole different animal, no pun intended.
      Actually, I'm way out in the water being I started out with a spring steel rod and a block of Birch, the blade has a full tang, shaped, sharpened and polished to a 1500 grit so far. The handle I sanded into a simi recurve with unique carving and inlaid little metal dragons that came with the other Katana parts I ordered on line. Truthfully, I've never attempted anything like any of this, but it's for my 16 year old son. I'll be off to my next life by the end of this year so I really want to give him something I made myself before I go. I had a general concept for it but you Matt brought it together with this video. So thank you. Being able to learn how to do these scales really took this far beyond what I had envisioned.
      And gives me a sense of accomplishment towards something very meaningful. And your making me look like the coolest dad ever.
      So again, from one Matt to another.
      thank you, Matt.

    Is this difficult on harder woods like cedar?

    • @MattCarves

      The wood I am using is harder than most cedars. So should be easier.
