Thank you so much for doing this video. This is great review for the seminar of yours I took. Very glad I got to do that before I moved to Arizona and sorry we couldn't meet up when you were here a few weeks ago. Great stuff Sifu
I have been really y interest in Keysi, and Defence Labs for sometime. No training near me, and doesn’t seem to be much online that’s not expensive. Thanks for the basics!
This is very practical and effective stuff! I wrote a book on my system Centreline Boxing and one of my methods of attack is what I call the Battering Ram. The Pensador is like that, but taken further. I learned it from old school bareknuckle Boxing, but it's simply used as a way to get to the inside position. Here, it's like you can base an entire art around it!
Any art that utilises the flinch in a gineric offensive manner gives the defender a huge advantage, especially when that defensive / offensive shape is that of smothering or a covering shape as opposed to the more primary, traditional upward, inward, outward and downward blocking action, is going to be of much more benefit in a fight, especially when the exact same gineric shape and moves can be utilised in both defensive as well as a preemptive manner. This is excellent for the streets. Blocking with traditional blocks doesn't work, if the 4 primary blocks worked, profesional fighters who fight for a living would use them but they don't, they all without exception use covering or smothering.
It fascinates me how similar Keysi and Bajiquan are, especially the ramming attack. As a Bajimen myself, I find it looks like they go hand-in-hand in terms of transferrable techniques, I have been researching Keysi since the dark knight behind the scenes and thought it was interesting, but I never got a chance to learn it, unlike Bajiquan.
It's a shame there's no keysi gyms in Australia or any kind of touring seminar. Would love to give this a go as I'm always open to other arts and getting a feel for it myself.
@@SifuAlanBaker definitely none that are Keysi. It's pretty much all BJJ and MMA gyms here. Alot of the traditional martial arts gyms/dojo's have died off. Still the odd karate dojos ect around but mainly it's bjj and mma. Hopefully Keysi may do a seminar tour to Australia one day, think that's the only way I might get to give it a go. Unless I one day manage to make it to America.
As a very experienced fighter (many martial arts & practical, incl security/bouncer & street), *i love it!* It's *practical too!* (Just one example: Compared w grappling styles {because of the danger or your opponent's friends}, this Keysi, is safer!.. *It also rings TRUE, when you watch the success of MIKE TYSON!* (I'm referring to that lowering your core/CoB {Centre of Balance}) Mike often faught from what _looks_ like ridiculously LOW stance (even bent over), for both guard/doging AND ATTACK! Just like this 'Keysi' method. *Having been in fights (with multiple attackers sometimes too!), i can attest to the value of having this in your arsenal of tricks!* [ Edit: I am *not* a bot, Keysi practitioner, friend of ^ or fan-boy - Just an old fighter who knows what is real and what is McDojo BS! 👊 ]
You didn't give any example. I've never seen anyone do either of those two things in a gainful manner. Mike Tyson never used such a guard, nor did he "ram" anyone. I don't think there's a good reason for keeping your hands that high and I think there will rarely be a reason to ram someone like that rather than just punching or shooting in and getting dominant grips.
awesome. I have devised, a kind of hybrid between this method and a regular fighting stance where the defensive structure stays intact as much as possible, but you still throw strikes from that structure. also instead of bending over with the structure to Block a low punch I would bring the arm out of the structure and block more like a boxer then go right back into the structure.
How will you deal with body shot? Evasion? Counter? If so, what if thwy countered your counter, you could get knee'd in the face by diving forward and down straight to the enemies knee.
if you are in essentially a high guard with the shielding how are you able to adjust to a combination head to body. Also dropping so low to protect the body seems to not be ideal for back of head. Just thoughts.
This is just a "basic drill" to introduce the shielding concept. As you progress through the system, they address all angles and options for protecting other parts of the head and body.
Western boxing all school in days of 1920 used frames very effectively and is arguably richer in these moves than south easy Asian systems. Western boxing influenced the direction from muay boran to muay thai and Arjan Cesari refers to this in his writing
I totally agree. I have found these moves myself in multiple martial arts and combative systems over the years and in much of the old school Boxing methods I was introduced to.
Great stuff, Sifu Alan! Good to see KFM being given some exposure again. (Does "KFM" officially exist any longer?) I'm yet to train in it directly (sadly it's nowhere to be found where I currently live), but it's always seemed innovative yet instinctive to functionalize, especially if you have been doing JKD/FMA and are used to working with your forearms and elbows a lot both defensively and offensively at the same time. I feel it connects well with some of Vunak's R.A.T. system, especially the use of FMA-style "destructions." Some really innovative stuff has come from some of the Inosanto Academy students over the years, but most of it never seems to go "mainstream" for one reason or another (my theory is that since it doesn't "look" enough like MMA or hasn't been used in MMA, a lot of people these days believe that it can't possibly be useful, but those of us with an open mind and a love for experimentation know otherwise). But maybe that's kind of a good thing -- gives you an advantage to be able to use things that aren't known to those who would try to do harm to us.
Yes, there is a small group of us in the United States. we have an instructor training program that meets for training camps twice a year in Atlanta. And yes, I agree it blends well with multiple other martial arts that I have trained. Overall, it boils down to the use of shielding to protect the head and you will see this concept in multiple different Martial Arts. I particularly like the way Keysi grows the concept into an eventual living expression of the technique instead of something static. The Inosanto Academy has definitely produced some incredible influences on The Martial Arts and Self Defense industry over the years and I believe still does so. (Guro is a legend,) You are correct that you have to continue to be a wisdom seeker and dig up the information in order to find it, and that capacity, is over the majority of the communities heads.
@@SifuAlanBaker A wonderful reply, thanks! I live in Los Angeles and know some Inosanto Academy folks (I have a feeling we know some of the same people!), but my work in the film industry could soon involve some time spent in the Atlanta area. I will get in touch about some training!
Thank you Sifu Baker, such great and detailed instruction. Is this the type of training detail and lessons found at your online CTAC academy? Definitely considering enrolling online! Live in SC, and would love to visit an in person seminar over at your HQ in Atlanta. Thanks again and please keep these coming! At age 50, youve made me love training again!👍
Thanks. I’m interested to know what you do with a variety of kicks when you they are lower and it’s not realistic to drop your elbows to knees etc… Also training to absorb all the hits straight on seems dangerous. Interesting and curious.
Alan, I trust that what you teach is effective, and I appreciated your work on Warrior Poet for it’s speed and ferocity. Do you have any performance based footage of you applying your techniques? Something like a tournament, footage of an altercation you’ve resolved, or something like that. You are a practiced man of humility and education, but maybe cracking the throttle could bring even more credibility to your body of work and conviction to your RUclips audience.
this is brilliant. we make the mistake of training self-defense like professional fighters fight. obviously the level of technique and time is very different between the two.
Alan , I love your style of continuous movement, and I incorporate your drills in my teaching with my students. Here's my question, if the attacker has a knife in his hand, covering up like that still allows the knife to come very close and probably will stab you. How does the shield apply to knife defense. Thank you
Honestly, if a blade were involved, the entire application would change. Personally, I would switch to a completely different set of tools. I would probably shift more toward applications out of the various Filipino, or Indonesian Martial Arts
I and one of my partners got a call that someone in the county found an grenade in a ditch. My partner who is a former 18c. Goes down range looks at and walks back to me like yup, old pineapple grenade. A national gaurd EOD team shows ip, the sergeant walks down range , picks it up, tosses it back down, no fucks given. Walks back up to us like yup , the pin is missing but it's all good. Walks back down range, tapes it up and puts it in a container, walks off and BIPs it.
I like the Ram attack and the Pensador looks a lot like 52 Blocks or an old school cross armed Boxing guard. I dont like the lowering of the head to block punches, too risky to a knee e.g Muay Thai, you'd actually be better blocking that like you were blocking a kick e.g with your leg like Muay Thai if you wanted to keep the head covered and not use an elbow like in Boxing.
I really don't see the resemblance between 52 and keysi. 52 and keysi are completely different when it comes to body mechanics and technical sufficiency.
A very good idea to go into a fight head first, especially if you are inferior to your opponent in strength and weight...*irony It doesn't even look safe in a training situation....
I came to this channel because of Sifu Alan. I might stay because of Jen. Jen, you're a good partner. Thanks to you guys for the vids. Very cool!
I'm just here for Jenn too, lol
Man, this is GOOD! Keysi seems like a too little-known, undervalued art. I think this needs to be showcased more.
I like this method , it is weaponizing the shell guard , similar to weaponizing the flinch of Tony Blauer's speer system.
Thank You!
Yeah, the geniality in this is the perfect combination between attack and defense in one technique.
This would compliment Judo very well for punch defense to safely attain clench range for Judoka, wrestler or Sambo grappler in unarmed combat defense.
Agreed, we use it in that very manner quite often when blending it with the other arts.
Sifu. I love it. Love what your bringing.
Thank You!

I will see what we can do.

Do the hands come over the ears, or just down the side of the head?
Yes, they can cover the ears too. They can be moved to any part of the head.
