    by NATE CHINEN
    When Joshua Redman blew onto the scene in the early 1990s - a saxophonist brimming with intellect and energy, but refreshingly unhurried with his cadence - one salient thing to know about him was that he came from a line of musical descent. His father, Dewey Redman, also played the saxophone (mainly tenor), and had come to prominence in the 1960s avant-garde, notably through an affiliation with Ornette Coleman.
    The younger Redman had been raised by his mother out in Berkeley, Calif., and didn't know his father all that well. But they connected musically during his undergraduate years at Harvard, while he was pursuing jazz on the side. (In 1989, the summer before his senior year, he accepted his father's invitation to sit in for a week at the Village Vanguard.) After Joshua won the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, setting off a major-label bidding war, patrilineage became a part of his narrative, one way of explaining his bounding talent.
    Dewey Redman died in 2006, at 75. His son played a stark and plaintive solo rumination at his memorial. He had no intention of organizing a larger tribute to his father at the time - but when bassist Charlie Haden also died, not quite a decade later, something began to stir.
    "Charlie brought out the love in my father's playing: a warmth, tenderness and honesty that few others brought out to the same degree," Joshua Redman said at Haden's memorial, his voice wobbling slightly. "In a strange way," he added, "Charlie helped me to love my father." It wasn't long after this moment that Redman began to think about a lot about Old and New Dreams.
    From the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s, the members of Old and New Dreams - Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden, plus Don Cherry on trumpet and Ed Blackwell on drums - paid homage of a sort to Ornette Coleman, in whose band they had previously played. Coleman had convened a new collection of misfits: the ecstatic, electric band Prime Time. There was no outlet for the soulful acoustic sound he'd refined in the '60s, so Old and New Dreams picked up the torch and carried it on.
    Joshua Redman decided that he would do something similar, a generation down the line. Still Dreaming is his nod to Old and New Dreams, a collective with several worthy partners: drummer Brian Blade, who like Blackwell hails from Louisiana; cornetist Ron Miles, a great admirer of Cherry; and bassist Scott Colley, who studied closely with Haden. This new group has come together over the last few years to refurbish a repertory: songs like "Mopti," by Cherry, and "Rushour," by Dewey Redman.
    In this episode of Jazz Night In America, you'll hear Still Dreaming play those pieces and a couple of heartfelt originals in a recent concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room. You'll also hear Redman open up about his father's legacy and the unconscious bequest of his sound. And the other members of Still Dreaming will speak to why a music birthed in tribute, some 40 years ago, still conveys so much beauty and immediacy today.
    SET LIST
    1:33 - "Mopti"

    I was working in S. Korea in '89 and had to go to Tokyo to get my work visa renewed...while there, I saw that there was a group called The Special Quartet playing, which was comprised of DON CHERRY, DEWEY REDMAN, CHARLIE HADEN & PAUL MOTIAN! (3/4 of OLD AND NEW DREAMS!) of course I went!...cool small basement club in Roppongi (The Pit Inn)...I noticed I was one of the only (if not THE only) non Japanese person there, so between sets, I took a chance and went to the dressing room (basically a closet!) to say hello and perhaps get a photo...I was immediately welcomed by Don and Dewey...mentioned that I'd recently seen Dewey in Toronto w/ local soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett...he said.."ah, yes...Jane..." after chatting (Don was asking what I was doing here etc), I asked if it was possible for my wife to take a photo? (pre cel phone "selfie days"), Don said of course and told me to come in (as I said, it was a TINY space!) he positioned me on the bench, crammed in between him and Dewey and my wife took the photo...impossibly, my smile was bigger than my face!...I thanked them profusely and went to leave, when Don asked me if there was any particular song I'd like to hear?...shocked, I thought about it and replied "How about MOPTI?"...he smiled thoughtfully and said "I haven't played that in years..." I thanked them again and we went to our seats...during the set, when Don was at the piano, sure enough, he started playing MOPTI!...what a night (PS I got pics with Charlie and Paul as well, my expression exactly the same in each!)

    This is the best Avant Garde I've heard in quite the while and it was so organic and authentic in it's depth with Grade A musicians in top form!!! Great visuals too from the wonderful backdrop of the roundabout below with the city skyline and the musicians soulful animations as they played with vigor......what a concert!!!

    I'm 30 minutes into this and it just dawned on me. There's no piano or guitar - no chordal instrument. I still don't miss it. That's a tribute to everyone's playing but perhaps Scott's in particular. I wish rush hour around here moved at the tempo of the song. Brian Blade is magic - a delight to hear. Ron and Joshua play off each other so well. Love it.

    The slow blues toward the end shows one of Brian's influences was definitely Elvin Jones.When it speeds back up, plenty of Elvin there as well, with Brian's own touch of course.

    Interesting how I"ve always thought that Old and New Dreams was THE greatest of tribute bands. How many tribute bands have a tribute band done for them ??? (Don't know of another example…). I saw them 3 days (daZe!) in a row at Hop Singhs Los Angeles (Marina Del Rey)in 1980 or 1981. Still one of my greatest memories. (Other than seeing the original 4tet (OC,DC,CH,BH) during the "In All Languages" tour in 1987…)

    • @kfwkfw1
      @kfwkfw1 5 лет назад

      Was that the same tour in which he did an acoustic set, an electric set, and then a combo set? I heard that in Boston. Terrible venue - we had stand or sit on the floor, and they showed up way late. I'm grateful to have heard the original quartet, though.

    • @seanconlon2408
      @seanconlon2408 Год назад +1

      @@kfwkfw1 I'm way late to the party here, but I believe the show you saw was the only time that the Quartet and Prime Time played together on the tour. I also believe it was a piece written especially for the 2 groups. I saw the show at Town Hall in New York (the only time I saw Ornette), and they only played 2 sets, separately.
