- Saxophonist Joshua Redman and the collaborative trio The Bad Plus both stand among the most celebrated, thoughtful and prominent jazz acts of the last couple decades. That, and their contrasting aesthetic sensibilities, made it at least news when they first got together in 2011. As it turns out, that collaboration bore lasting fruit: After a series of gigs last summer, they went into the studio with each others' tunes to record The Bad Plus Joshua Redman (say it out loud), to be released in late May. Jazz Night In America was at the Detroit Jazz Festival last year to capture the new quartet, fresh out of the studio.

I think this is some of the greatest quartet ENSEMBLE playing I've ever heard. 2pm especially.
I caught Joshua at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday several years ago. Even then he was clearly a force to be reckoned with. I am so pleased to see him now collaborating with the Bad Plus. They are making music of the highest order! BRAVO gentlemen!!
At last I found what I was looking for.
And that's how you get the gig...
You can see it on Redman's face before he blows the horn on the first song. The amount of sincerity, thought, emotion and spirituality invoked, involved and summoned.
Love is the answer 02:30
seen 'em three times in Knoxville--first in 2011 They peeled the paint of the Bijou Theatre and were then surprised when the whole place jumped to it's feet and yelled above thunderous applause...they keep evolving and Redman is a stroke of genius
Good stuff! 🥰😎😎
14:03 I feel sorry for people that dislike jazz because they will never know what THAT feels like.
are you god or what ?
Slightly before that you could see Redman's fervent passion in his play. ❤️
Great time stamp. That lady is groooooovin'.
I'm old now and just smile when people say they hate jazz. I think to myself that they're the sort of people who travel to foreign countries and assume everyone's speaking jibberish. :-D
Honestly, I'd rather folks just say they Hate jazz, rather than Embracing Smooth Jazz like Spyro Gyra, Kenny G, etc, & attempting to call that "Jazz"
Love is the answer and People like you ❤️
glad to have found this
This masterpiece ONLY 105k??!! People this days are crazy....
First time hearing Bad Plus. Anderson is an amazing songwriter, will need to check out more of their stuff.
With all the praise I have to say honestly the band strains to keep up with Joshua in the fast swing moments, I do love the group so much it hurts me to say it.
great music. great musician
BPJR was my first time seeing the Bad Plus live (same set as this) and I was absolutely blown away! Now I just wish someone could find video or audio of the shows they did with Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Wait, what? I didn’t know that happened. If you find that, please let me know!
Most, feeling and spirited talk!
Omg this is amazing
Just amazing priceless, have you ever seen 4 guys with so much energy exploding
Feeling some very heavy Keith Jarrett American Quartet vibes during "2 P.M."
Jeezus, that's actually spot on. I was thinking it was Ornette-like but let's face it, that K.J.A.Q. was a continuance of that "sound" . What's insane about this band's depth is the way they touch a ballad like "People Like You", after turning over tables in some of the other songs earlier.
tasty lighting
Man this groove is so great
i love this video soooo much
Excelentes músicos!!!!
Damn this is so good!
still love it!!

26:48 David loses a drumstick --- of course he recovers nicely!

Probably THE post-jazz group... which still manages to be "jazz". A lot of people won't get it because they're expecting the typical language and cliches.
is that a flat ride Mr. King has?
Well it sound like his E and A are a bit off.
@@manolos95 🦊🤤🤣🙏🤣🤤🦊
All drummers now just play an extended similar version of jack dejhonet drum style
26:48 It happens to the best of us
leaderless ? and we talk about music of the bad plus without redman? where are you...
The upright bass seems to have gone out of tune from being left on stage? It's all over the place! really flat!
In his defense, it was probably really humid out. I live near Detroit, been to the festival.
The saxophone ruined this lovely song.
Life.
