Why Marcos Ambrose Was AWESOME

  • Before Shane Van Gisbergen, there was Marcos Ambrose who would always be a threat in the Cup Series on road courses. NASCAR has seen and continues to see many foreign drivers, but possibly none had more success then Ambrose who became the first Aussie to win in NASCAR and lay the groundwork for other supercars drivers to get to NASCAR.

Marcos missed his true calling as a nascar driver. Had he been found earlier and had the ability to get more seat time on ovals and had better equipment for a long career run his numbers would have been awesome. I'd say 20 wins plus. Also if he could of had the schedule they have now with 6 plus road courses a year he may have gotten 20 plus road course wins

Would have been good to see Scott McLaughlin go to Nascar rather than Indy, maybe one day

Marcos Ambrose could have had HoF stats if he was with a better team and raced longer. I really believe that. People don't realize how good he was on road courses.
I'd rank him as the best EVER on a road course. Yes that includes AJ, Chase, Tony, Jeff, McDowell, everyone. Maybe SVG has something for him, but I can't make that call after 2 races.
That 3rd at Watkins Glen? Yeah, he did that coming from the back in his 2nd career start in a car that had 7 DNQ's and a best finish of 20th so far that year. The ONLY race he finished outside the top 3 at Watkins Glen was the 2013 race where he DNF'd and finished 31st after leading the most laps. His other road course DNF was his debut where he finished 42nd at Sonoma after wheeling that same WBR shitbox into the top 5. If you take out those two obvious outliers, his average finish on road courses was a ridiculous 4.25, and he NEVER had good equipment.
SVG has something I've never seen since Ambrose. If you go watch Ambrose vs literally anyone on a road course, he makes up ALL his time under braking. He can start braking later than everyone and make the turn perfectly fine, doesn't wheel hop or need to overslow because he has too much speed. That race he finished 3rd at the Glen and Montoya won? Go watch the duel in the opening laps between them. Montoya is no slouch on road courses either and Ambrose clearly doesn't have the motor to keep up with him but he gains so much on every braking zone against one of the best all around drivers out there. SVG at Chicago was the exact same thing. There were so many turns I was confident SVG overdrove on entry and would either wreck or have to slow way down, but nope, not even once did that happen.
Also, an interesting fact that not many people know about is that Marcos Ambrose attempt to make his debut at the 2007 Glen race in a 2nd Robby Gordon car that Robby let him drive as an apology for what happened at Montreal earlier in the year. Unfortunately for Marcos, qualifying would rain out and because that car had no owner points he would end up with a DNQ.

He would have been eclipsed so very quickly by Whincup.
As it was, Lowndes wasn't in very good equipment and the HRT had already peaked.

Had they made the gen 6 like they did the gen 7 and added 4 more road courses ambrose would have been lethal on road courses.

One of my instructors from NASCAR Technical Institute, Gary Cogswell was the crew chief for Marcus. He had nothing but praise for him.

SVG is on a little higher calibre of a driver then Marcos, Marcos was great in AUS but never won Bathurst 1000, but still good

@@michaelbuettner1487 Marcus never had the coin behind him that the Main Holden teams had either. Put in one of those cars, he'd of cleaned up year after year. As for SVG being a higher calibre.. thats a big call, considering we never got to see either running against each other in equal cars. Jmho..

If SVG somehow gets as comfortable in a NASCAR Cup car as he is in a V8 Supercar, he could end up laying waste to the whole series. It's just a matter of waiting to see if that ever comes to pass, because he'll need to shake off the nickname given to him by Max Verstappen (a friend of his on iRacing, IIRC).

Marcos was great and could drive on the non road courses as well. I wonder if he would do SRX, that would be fun to see.

Yes as others have pointed out, more road courses, better team, things would have been different. He was nearly unbeatable at Watkins Glen and if it wasn't for his team mate Aric Almirola "stacking it" for no apparent reason at the worst possible time for Ambrose, he should of won one more race there

I really miss Marcos, he came up through the truck series,Busch and then Cup. This is how I prefer to see drivers enter Nascar. Not the way SVG did, now there is so much hype that its ridiculous. I have nothing against SVG, I hope he does well, he seems like a pretty likeable guy and good driver but lets see how he does at 1.5 mile ovals .

2 wins, 46 top tens and 3 poles in cup cars is not too bad But keep an eye out for Brodie Kostecki if he decided to come to nascar in the future his race was a lot better than the 22nd looks because he did start at the back move up to 17th then a late pitstop back down to 26th then finally finishing 22nd

Ambrose was way over his head in Nascar which is mainly round track not road course. You can spin it all you want, but fact remains Ambrose never finished better than 19th in Cup points.

so a guy with no oval racing experience came in and was better than half of the field? Doesn't say much for oval racing skill levels

    Lay the groundwork?
Allan Grice, Dick Johnson and Jim Richards had already been.
NASCAR is a second choice direction. Formula One is where Australian drivers want to be.
