Who is Julian Assange and why does the US want to extradite him? - BBC News

  • Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, says he’s the victim of a US conspiracy to punish him for exposing alleged US war crimes.
Assange set up Wikileaks in 2006 to expose secrets that he, and others, thought should be exposed, including alleged US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the US says the leaks broke the law and endangered lives.
Assange had sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid deportation. He remained there for nearly 7 years until he was ejected and arrested.
A UK district judge blocked his extradition after his lawyer told the court that the risk of suicide would be "imminent the moment extradition becomes likely". An appeal is now going to the British High Court where they will decide if he should face extradition to the USA.

He's a journalist that published evidence of a country covering up war crimes and had a target on his back ever since. @Stick let's just straighten out a few things. I NEVER agreed going into Iraq in the first place! Because I knew that was a serious miscalculation and mistake of magnitude. Assange might've been correct on that! Afghanistan, however was UN LEGIT! Under UNR 1441. And in that regard, he was seriously wrong and still is. Recently departing from the latter as has been done. Will make any operation to restore a balanced government complicated! I don't see any nation supporting calls for a re- invasion of that land. And I doubt that it will be so authorized by the UN. We had one chance of getting that sorted out. And we flubbed it. The Taliban aren't too keen on allying themselves with Isis K or others of that kind. For once, leaving well alone is the only option to do.
