Thank you! Drove around in circles for two days searching for a air powered impact wrench. Surprised to find that even Home Depot does not rent this item. Came across your video and decided to give it a try. Put a 5 ft cheater pipe on my breaker bar. Didn't want to budge the first time. I got my heat gun out and held it on the bolt for a couple minutes. That did the trick. Heard that snap and off it came.
Fantastic idea! Working on a 96 Toyota Avalon, which for the life of me, I cannot get this bolt off. after seeing this video I am going to make a similar tool thanks again dude. awesome idea. much appreciated
Justin just like to say thanks a heap. Did everything u did nothing worked found your video and your method did the job. My motor was the 3800 v6 Buick motor only thing l did extra was used high tensile bolts on the plate the mild steel ones started to bend and l also added 3 feet of pipe extension to the breaker bar like u did. Got it off no problem. Only thing to add to viewers is Don't use jump method as if u get direction of motor wrong or motor starts shit it will cost a heap $$$$$$$$$$ in repairs . Just use what u see above as it's safe and well controlled.. Remember Wisdom is Cheap not Listening is Expensive $$$$ VC 👍👍😊 Thanks Justin again...
Thank you for your creative solution. I was having this very issue with my Jeep Xj 4.0, and I ended up using a 1/8" thick security bar for my tool drawer. Drilled two holes out, bolted it to my damper, and once it hit the sub frame the bolt broke free.
Very ingenuos and creative. Excellent job. I've had an Airkat impact with 1,195 lbs-ft torque. But the real trick is I saw the guy from Soutn Main Auto remove a Honda 19mm crankshaft pulley bolt with a harmonic balancer socket. I bought one for $27 on Amzn. Its walls are over 1/4" thick, perhaps thicker. With my Airkat and that socket it takes about 5 secs to brake loose. I have a 19mm for my Hondas and a 22mm for a Toyota Highlander with a 3.3L V6. I've now done 3 timing belt jobs on Hondas and one on the Toyota. Each took less than 5 secs for the gun to loosen it. On a 4cyl Honda Accord it worked with.my Husky beginner's impact with no more than 275 lbs-ft. But the Highlander required the Airkat's power. If you dont have an air compressor or tools work a piece ofthick steel, you can buy the harmonic balancer holding tool ($45 amzn) that attaches to a breaker bar or 1/2" socket wrench, plus a second breaker bar for breaking the bolt loose. Timing belt jobs are a breeze now.
Thank you for sharing that tip. I also discovered that type of socket about a year or two ago. Here is a quick video I made showing how to use it. I sure wish I would have known about these years ago! ruclips.net/video/fFSLs3-xtxs/видео.html
That's a great tip. I also have toyota where breaker bar trick and cranking starter didn't work. I also immobilized the harmonic balancer, but without making any special tool. I just used a combination wrench of suitable length and one bolt/large washer in the harmonic balancer wheel. The open end of the combination wrench supports the bolt and closed end goes into a hole in the frame just below the harmonic balancer wheel. Tightening the bolt and washer secures the open jaw of the combination wrench. This way, the harmonic balancer wheel is immobilized and I was able to loosen the bolt.
That's a great idea. I'm going to try that tomorrow. I've already got a piece of steel with a big hole in it that might be just right, then measuring and drilling the little holes will be easy.
great job making that holder thing, mines different so i can put rachet straps around it to the frame then use a long pipe,BUT you guys can also use the weight of the car to do the job for you,put your socket and big 1/2 rachet on it then take a floor jack under neath with a piece of 2X4 wood going up to the rachet and put it just where it will turn the rachet when you jack up the floor jack haha ive done this when you need to remove a stuck transmission fluid drain or fill plug, but yall get the idea, hope this helps some dude out there in a garage some place haha if so shout out thank you Lance in texas ok lol later
Awesome. I tried bump method, borrowed big compressor, bought new impact gun, heated, banged, pb blasted... I actually thought of this, but dismissed it thinking there was a better way. I'm making one now. Thanks.
I didmt do exactly what you did but this gave me a genius idea that WORKED for a honda..had all proper tools and that bastard wouldnt break loose. 2' breaker bar with an 8' pipe popped it right off
Heres another idea just lock up the flywheel in the back of the motor.. should be a plate that covers a hole you can wedge a pry bar into it .... but i like the plate idea as well
The reason why an impact may not work is if you’re only able to hold the outside of the pulley, the rubber between the bolt and the outer pulley absorbs the shock that the impact wrench relies on to do it’s job. If you’re able to brace the inside face of the pulley using a couple of bolts (1/4-28) and a sturdy piece of angle steel, the impact or breaker bar “should” do the job. Now having said that, my brace did not hold up, and one of my puny 10 cent quarter inch bolts sheared off. (My fault). If you use this method, be sure to use grade 5 or better bolts to do the job. Make sure the brace is not loose, and is held tightly against the pulley face. Otherwise the nature of leverage will get you like it got me. I was able to find a solid place to position my three-quarter inch drive breaker bar and socket. I did not hold the starter down for more than a millisecond (two times) and the starter method worked for me. Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary. Do not do what I did. Your breaker bar may fly across the street and break the window in the neighbors home killing their dog.
Min. 1/2 breaker bar and impact socket + 4ft pipe extension is what did it. Reverse the belt back on itself to hold the pulley next time to keep metal fabrication for other projects.
Lexus rx 300 2000 3.0LT which way is the pulley in running conditions turning clockwise correct? I have used everything including a tool i made in the shap of a V doing the same thing. But its the bolt not the pulley and she's going to strip soon. SOS
Yes, the engine runs in a clockwise direction when looking at the pulley. I hope you can figure out some way to get the bolt out--they can be very challenging!
help please drop a line: what is the screw size of the 2 little holes? I tried to use some screws out of a pulley tool from autozone, but they won't fit and probably screwed up my holes. thanks very much!
I have seen people use a torch on the washer face to break them loose on Hondas with no ill effects.its that little bit of corrosion on the face of the washer that causes havoc.i will be doing two Honda V6's soon I'll let you know how I make out. Your videos are really informative. Please keep them coming.
some manufacturers put loctite 271 or 277 on the crank pulley bolt, and loctite says in their tec sheet that to break it loose you have to warm it up a bit
Rockabilly Rambler not necessarily you gotta time it just right you cant hold the torch on that washer for to long or else like you said then you gotta replace the seal
I don't know. I just measured the distance between the two bolt holes on the harmonic balancer and marked that on the steel plate and started drilling.
You should only hold the interior segment of the pulley with the two bolt holes. If you attempt to hold the CIRCUMFERENCE of the pulley you will damage the harmonic balancer up to and including moving the timing mark relative to the central portion of the pulley thus making it impossible to determine TDC. An OTC gland wrench with 3/4 inch drive works well to hold the pulley.
Having this exact same problem only I did something stupid. Since I didnt have the proper tool I tried using just one hole on the balance and snapped half of the nipple. Now it looks like I'm going to have to pull the radiator to make enough room to drill the hole deeper. Mitsubishi Montero Sport water pump is my nightmare at the moment, just getting to it. I'm not a real mechanic or anything Much more invasive than other water pumps I've replaced. Well I'm in it now. Only choice is to push forward.
What vehicle is that tiny little harmonic balancer on ? Is it one of those imports ? The one on my f150 looks as if it is atleast twice the size and there isn’t any thing even remotely comparable to apply this great tip . It is a damn sweet ass idea though Bruv 👍
I can not get my harmonic balancer (crankshaft) pulley to come off. I've tried using one of those puller kits and it got all bent up. The main bolt is out. I've used PB blaster and WD-40 and it will not come off. My vehicle is a 2007 Mustang 4.0L V6. Any advice on how to get the pulley off? Thank you
You need a stronger 3/4 impact. I have a 1400ft lb one that even removes honda crank pulley bolts and they use Loctite from the factory. I've never had to do anything else for crank bolts just my strong impact works right everytime. You could always use a blow torch on the bolt to melt some of that Loctite off for easier removal.
you can fill one of the cylinders with rope just make sure the piston is all the way down then feed the rope and obviously leave a piece hanging out or youll never be able to get the rope out
@@springer-qb4dv I tried that and since I was only using one hole instead of two, it snapped half of on of the nipples the hole was in and now I'm going to have to modify...... Drill out the hole deeper. Sucks because I have to remove more stuff in order to do so
Here's one more trick, try a carbide hole saw with the center drill bit removed. It leaves the bolt still usable with a new washer, but once the flange is cut free the bolt will come off easy.
Just put a cheater bar on the end of your ratchet, wedge it into a piece of metal on car or wedge it in the ground the right direction and bump your key so shaft turns and loosens bolt for you . Easier and faster
You are right. It is crazy how hard these can be to break loose. I don't know that it is always the result of over-torquing. If not this time, at least it could make it easier in the future: ruclips.net/video/fFSLs3-xtxs/видео.html Good luck! Justin
The amount of torque used to tighten the bolt has nothing to do with the amount of torque needed to break it loose after it has been there for a while.
I watched this two years ago. Used this method to remove the balancer from a V12 jaguar. It worked very well. Smart man. Thankyou.

IF using the 1/4 inch hose on the compressor, that won't do it. You need the 1/2 inch hose the gun to have the necessary pressure

They do have a tool for this Toyota engine crank bolt, invest in the correct tools if you work on cars and you still have to install the bolt.
Do you need to be on tdc before removing the crankshaft bolt?
No. The position of the engine doesn't matter.
very clever

Is it reverse thread
No. They are regular right-hand threads.
Put the bolts in and tie them off with wire the wire will hold it in place for you
I would never recommend an impact gun to to remove a crank bolt. I’m sure it would be ok, my fear would be destroying a rod or crank bearing
