Great video. By the way, I personally feel it's always a good idea to use flat washers under the heads of the 3 bolts holding the puller to the damper.
Brian, your rock! Got the same puller from harbor freight. Used it on my 1999 Jeep Wrangler today. Jeep calls the harmonic balancer a vibration damper. Worked perfectly. Your video really gave me the confidence to do this. Pulled the balancer so I I can replace the crank seal behind it.Thank You So Much! Please keep the videos coming. Don't think for a second that your efforts are not appreciated!
Jeep call them that because that's essentially what a harmonic balancer does, it dampens piston force vibration as well as having the additional function of a drive pulley.
I just got done using a puller tool yesterday for removal of my harmonic balancer on my 2002 Nissan Frontier. It was a little bit difficult in that hard to get to location to get those two small 6 mm bolts on there to hold it in place, but once I did it it was so smooth and easy to take the harmonic balancer off. The tool is very cheap even if you just purchase it, but you can also rent one.
I just got this "Bolt-Type Wheel Puller Set" at Harbor Freight for 13 bucks. I had a pretty good idea how it works and seeing your video confirmed it. Thanks for taking the time to make it and post it.
On an F150 or Expedition I use a special length, thread, size bolt. On this one you can use the factory bolt. It just depends on the vehicle that's tormenting you.
Hey man awesome videos, got any advice on a 2007 toyota sienna head gasket replacemnet, cant find any videos on utube to know what im getting into. I have done fords, and chevy but never a toyota. Thanks for the informative vids, they help alot. Best regards.
u can also use a socket and a cheater bar and put it on the center bolt and brace the cheater bar on the frame and barely crank the engine it will loosen the bolt where it comes off by hand. nice video thanks
like the vid thanks now a question I have a 99 dodge 2500 5.9 gas 4x4 i have a exhaust leak that is pretty bad sounding , the question is --is there any easy way to remove the exhaust bolts without breaking them, all i need is the exhaust removed from the manifold not the manifold itself. i live in the country so its not like i can just break them and run to pep boys or where ever, if i do break them what do I replace them with? thanks for any time and consideration.
I need to get a good balancer puller set. I made a steering wheel puller in school from old scrap stock and some grade 8 bolts, but I've yet to see an engine with a balancer small enough that I could use this thing on. Did you video any more of the timing belt job?
Thanks for all that information fixing cars. I need to reemplace crankshaft pulley on 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 gemi.thanks If you available to show this problem in this truck
Nice video! I'm pretty sure you can "borrow" a nice set of these from your local Advance Auto Parts store. I wish I knew that before replacing the leaking front crank seal on my 2001 Altima! I was too cheap to buy a set like shown, so I ended up prying the harmonic balancer from behind, scarring the innermost pulley ridge a bit. I "fixed" that by filing edges in a couple spots smooth, and it's been working ok for the last 5K miles or so. But having a puller set like this would have made the job MUCH easier!
Well done so I have to ask what was the reason you took it off. A couple of other questions Brian but I'm going to run out of space so its off to a new message, you will like this.
There is an Auction going on right now for that bolt puller kit on e-bay. I put a bid in on it because it's at $6.50 with $14 shipping. I was curious to seen what all it could do and I wound up here. I tried to subscribe to your channel but found out that I had already done that some time ago LOL. I've been looking for something that will remove pulleys from electric motors. Thank you for posting this because I don't think this kit will do that for me. I could be wrong.
wished the freestar was that easy. mine is pinned up against the frame. my day went bad quick plus the harmonic balancer on the back is about 2 and a half thick.
I have the 3.5 ton Arcan from Costco, and its great, low enough to lift my wife's honda and strong enough and high enough to lift my F350. And I guess you can get replacement parts for them.
So probably most ask this cause no one covers it ??? Does the big center BOLT go INSIDE the harmonic balancer or does it press against out side . The pointed one does not go INSIDE but it sets 1/100 th of a in . to big and flat round one is way to big outside . Does MAIN BOLT on tool go INSIDE or just rim the edge of harmonic balancer ?? I'm frustrated sorry
Isnt the cone/pointed piece used for certain bolt styles that have a cone type piece at the head. For sure using that would or could damage the threads. Good job in using the flat one for this job.
Asalama Lakem Brian !! My German Weimaraner dog, well he's not quite German, mine is from India ,specifically from Islamabad. He only wants to eat our curried pork schnitzel and boiled Somoza's. Could he be Punjabi ? He does lay down 5 times a day, if yes where can I buy a burqa ? , Cant ask my Rabbi about this, she's gone on a 2 month sabbatical to the Vatican. Sure could use your wisdom , any thoughts ? Shalom soit avec vous. (Y)
lucy winkelman the dampner has a dowel pin in the center that keeps it connected to the crank shaft until it is removed. which also helps locate it correctly when installing it.
Hey Brian, around 1:25 you said that Dodge uses their own special puller - my 02 Dakota with the 3.9 uses the 2-3 bolt hole method you show here. Did Dodge adopt that some time after 02? Love yer vids brother!
Kenneth Moore I have a Saturn and wonder the same thing... if you put claws on it that would seem to bend and distort it to me, so I am mystified as well!
ill add comments about this after i do my 99' ram 1500. my balancer broke apart. the 5.9 has 2 steel rings and sandwiched a rubber ring in between the two steel rings. the outer came off. I gotta do my timing cover too
I did like that. Sounds like something an inebriated person would say to a police officer on the side of the highway. ; ) I was doing a timing belt and water pump.
The lady's husband came at the time of pick up and after I showed them the parts, the work, and a video of what happened he was very gracious and apologetic. I might work on their stuff again, but I don't want to deal with the lady- I'd talk to the husband.
Oh i almost forgot. That kit on e-bay is sold by Taddwholesale on e-bay. The auction number is 300865138150. That seller usually starts the bids at 99 cents. They sell things that get lost in shipping or things returned to seller. All sorts of stuff. I bought a $50 hand plane there for $2 plus $10 shipping. The plane had a broken wood handle whicjh I fixed with a little glue. I just like seeing what they have for sale.
LOL! OK here we go. He could be Punjabi as Islamabad is in far north India (more North than I've ever been in India. Schnitzel is German. Samoza's a drink. Burqa is what Muslim women wear. I don't think they make those for Weimaraners. Rabbi's are Jewish and couldn't advise well on Islam fashion. Vatican is Catholic and not the #1 place for Jewish clergy to visit. As for a Jewish French salutation- THAT could happen! How'd I do?
A satirical comment obviously, and nowhere did I mention a religion but my own. Edgy humour I will agree, but I assure you not intended to insult anyone. If your are insulted in any way then I sincerely apologise for anything stated that offended you,it was not my intention to do so. Sorry !!

Marandango i bought the same one
Wow that's neat! I've always wondered how that works. Thanks for the info.
thanks my friend for helping me out today
I"d like to say thanks as well for helping us as well!
Thanks for the help. I pretty much have the same kit.
Short and to the point! Thanks
On an F150 or Expedition I use a special length, thread, size bolt. On this one you can use the factory bolt. It just depends on the vehicle that's tormenting you.
Some shafts have a center hole for use with the cone type end.
A number of after market parts store will "lend for free" (deposit refunded upon return) this and similar tools. Great tutorial!
Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us, and to be honest I sometimes rely on you guys for idea's.
@imgone Likewise!
Thank you for a great video it helped
You're welcome man- will do. Take care.
This video will really help me out, Thnk U
What grade are the bolts you use ? Like grade 5 or grade 8's. Some bolts are soft and can strip easy if your not careful. Thanks for doing the video !

Looks like a harbor freight puller set to me, I picked mine up for around $10 but that was several years ago. As Brian would say, You're Welcome!
That was my initial reaction too!
I need to get a good balancer puller set. I made a steering wheel puller in school from old scrap stock and some grade 8 bolts, but I've yet to see an engine with a balancer small enough that I could use this thing on.

HAHA space shuttle. I never heard of that. Good idea!

Did you have to use anykind of tool for when u tightened it back up?
What kind of air compressor do you use? Make and Model? Thanks!
would this work on a crankshaft of a mitsubishi montero 2000
I have an ARCAN from Costco and a Napa 3.5 ton from Napa.
Campbell Hausfeld twin cylinder oil bath- not sure the model.
Well done so I have to ask what was the reason you took it off. A couple of other questions Brian but I'm going to run out of space so its off to a new message, you will like this.
How did you get the main bolt initially? Air hammer?
Hey Brian do you use a tool to install the harmonic ballancer or just tighten it with the bolt?
There is an Auction going on right now for that bolt puller kit on e-bay. I put a bid in on it because it's at $6.50 with $14 shipping. I was curious to seen what all it could do and I wound up here. How did u get the middle bolt out with out spinning the motor ?
Try to break them when they are hot, or heat them (CAREFULLY SO THE TRUCK DOESN'T GET NICKED WITH FIRE) with a torch so they come out easy.
wished the freestar was that easy. mine is pinned up against the frame. my day went bad quick plus the harmonic balancer on the back is about 2 and a half thick.

I have a vid about the owner giving me grief and the van too. I lost all motive to do the belt vid.
@briansmobile1 How much was that puller set and where did you get it ?
I have to start buying some more automotive tech tools such as this for when i'm hired.
You're welcome.
i have used one of those to pull a flywheel of a lawnmower
Si l'offense a été prise de son, parce qu'ils voulaient certains. Sinon, ils n'auraient pas pris l'infraction. Non?
How do you get that pulley puller on it
Asalama Lakem Brian !! My German Weimaraner dog, well he's not quite German, mine is from India ,specifically from Islamabad. He only wants to eat our curried pork schnitzel and boiled Somoza's. How are you keeping the damper from spinning as you turn on the removal tool? Are you wedging something in there?
lucy winkelman the dampner has a dowel pin in the center that keeps it connected to the crank shaft until it is removed. which also helps locate it correctly when installing it.

My '99 Ram 1500 is the same. 5.2L 318.
You stick handeled that like a pro. J'ai peut-être offensé quelques-uns?
Very useful
Thanks!
What do you use if the harmonic ballancer has no bolt holes because the kit you used Would be useless my harmonic ballancer has no holes.
Kenneth Moore I have a Saturn and wonder the same thing... if you put claws on it that would seem to bend and distort it to me, so I am mystified as well!
thank yoouuu!!
I noticed the harbor freight kit is grade 5 bolts and otc is grade 8 bolts. Has anyone had into problems using grade 5 bolts?
You missed the part about taking of the bolt to the pully
ill add comments about this after i do my 99' ram 1500. my balancer broke apart. the 5.9 has 2 steel rings and sandwiched a rubber ring in between the two steel rings. the outer came off. I gotta do my timing cover too
the dodge ones a pita!
Don't forget the big washer behind the bolt. sometimes its hard to feel. if your keep cranking and cranking, the washer is still there.
I did like that. Sounds like something an inebriated person would say to a police officer on the side of the highway. ; ) I was doing a timing belt and water pump.
Im trying to get a Synchro cage(hub) off with one of these atm and its not budging. Any tips?
Jeremiah Clifford at heat they often have red loctite on them and will only come off with heat
for $12 at harbor freight, the puller works great.
Great in for ma ti on!
Great video, never used this tool before and had to pull a flywheel off a generator. thanks!
The lady's husband came at the time of pick up and after I showed them the parts, the work, and a video of what happened he was very gracious and apologetic. I might work on their stuff again, but I don't want to deal with the lady- I'd talk to the husband.
you should show the process of setting it up beforehand
can you think of a better way to say m6x1?
IDK. Ignorance is a close kin to fear. It's pretty natural.
Great I've got a Dodge, haha!
its nick name is duck foot, space shuttle is interesting tho lol

Im not, i was just asking, cause some viewers in different countries might be just saying.Cool thanks.
now i know what that is
LOL! OK here we go. He could be Punjabi as Islamabad is in far north India (more North than I've ever been in India. Schnitzel is German. Samoza's a drink. Burqa is what Muslim women wear. Screw them! You're good enough to work on their van and they give you grief.
A satirical comment obviously, and nowhere did I mention a religion but my own. Edgy humour I will agree, but I assure you not intended to insult anyone.
If your are insulted in any way then I sincerely apologise for anything stated that offended you,it was not my intention to do so. Sorry !!
That tool wont work on a 03 sorento just to let yall know
That's the balancer puller not the bolt puller. The bolt unscrews it doesn't pull out.
And of course i have a dodge
😂what does that look like a space shuttle yeah that’s a space shuttle
Fantastic tool and works as stated. Check out BABCO TOOLS out of Canada and your will save $200
u serious? dodge get Briggs & Stratton to make their balancers? lol haha
Its a pulley puller, not a bolt puller (eye roll)
The box says "bolt puller" Talk to the box or people who made it.
Are you making fun of other religion and people man?
That tool is a steering wheel puller, not a harmonic balancer puller. Use the right tool for the right job, this is not it!
Wrong. You should know what you’re talking about before talking.
Video has no sound or explanation. Pointless
It does when I play it. Are you watching on a phone? Check settings and speaker gui. Maybe hit that.
