When it comes to a complete overhaul with an automotive engine, eventually the harmonic balancer has to be removed which can be a troublesome task, and potentially damaging. The function of a universal harmonic balancer puller is to line up with either the two or three bolt holes on the front of the balancer, which varies across different engines. Using the correct size bolts to thread into the holes and hold the puller in place, the centre shaft is then threaded through the centre of the puller to brace against the loosened centre bolt that normally holds the balancer in place. The tightening of these pullers centre shaft then produces a pulling acting which safely slips the harmonic balancer off its key.

What do you mean "make sure the washer remains in place"? You can't leave the washer in the balancer because it will stop you from being able to put the puller through the balancer and onto the end of the crank. The washer MUST be removed with the crank bolt.

Buy 2 "hard" bolts from hardware store.
      5/16 - 18 tpi, 3inch (LY7 3.6)
Don't forget to PB Blast or wd-40 soak and clean the threads for the 2 holes you will be using straight across from each other with standard duck-foot puller kit.

What if you strip your threads?

Hi babegyrl704, That's a tricky one. Best to look into a tap & die set, a thread repair set with new threads, or a professional machinist. - Ash

I'm 10 months late but i've seen people who take the bolt off by putting a breaker bar on the nut, then activate the starter for like 1/4 of a second. Interesting way of doing it, no idea how you get the nut back on though.
