That was my Daddy’s truck! He is 93 years old and enjoyed watching this video! He started trucking in 1946. His name is still on the side of this truck. Love from Mr. Carol Harley Segars, Hartsville SC
In 1979. We bought a brand new 359 Pete with a KTA 525. 15spd with 411s. Used it to haul iron. Could go across the PA pike with 55 on the deck. Maybe shift 6 or 8 times from Carlisle to New Stanton. Biggest thing was to cheat the scales at the toll booths. Unbelievable power. Ran all over the country with that truck 🚚 Wishing I had that truck today. !
That it a cool truck I sure wish you would interview the gentleman that kept his dream all those years I read a comment his daughter wrote he is 93 years old he probably forgot more then most of the new drivers will ever know thank you for preserving his dream
My buddy had a Mack Western cabover with a KT-450, air shift 4/4, and 444 rears! That truck would run 72 MPH loaded, up any hill! All the big after dark steppers would pass us till they got out west, and then that old 2 stack Mack would sail by them going up any of the big grades/hills! That truck really came to life running the east coast though! I never saw it slow down on any mountain, period! Fuel mileage, 3 mpg at best!
I drove a KW C500 with a KTA 600hp..... 18 speed & 4.33 rear end.... Towing a quad roadtrain 160 tonnes fully loaded...... Think I'd prefer the QSK 19....
My 1978 cabover pete had a KT600 I hauled cattle it was like a train enguine that SOB didnt know what a hill was,I regret ever selling it I put over a million miles on it only problem with these motors was weight mine weighed a good 1000 pounds more then the 350 cummins I had before it
I love those trucks is in my blood and my daddy works on these trucks cats and Kenworth and tow trucks those trucks look good painting 🖌️🎨 new ones now in 2021
I drove them when they were new, Going west to shaky, loaded with chicken, they would pass everything on the road except a fuel station!!😂😂 They loved fuel but would absolutely pull like a freight train..
My dad had a 79 peterbuilt with a kta 600 roadranger 13 i remeber pulling grades loaded at 65 mph never dropped a gear ran from stockton to phoienix in 9.5 hours was 900 miles those were trucks
Its a low power Cummins KTA of 450 HP, yes they did turn them in to up 600 HP, and ther was 19 liter KTA used as a marine use and it was 700 HP- a lot of these engines went to Australia and be used in trucks to pull the work trains up to 300 tones gross, it is a monster, and it do less than 1 mile to the gallon. He he he, and that is why some Ausiss like to have that old V 8 18 liter CAT motor not the 19 liter KTA Cummins, that CAT will do 1.3 to maybe 2 miles to the gallon on a full load. Now 300 tones road train is not a 80 000 lb gross combination, NOT AT ALL, dont even compare.TH
I love kta motors but there are plenty of cats be it C - 15 = C - 16 = C - 18 's that'll take on any kta's especially in sled pulling and truck drags hauling fully loaded trailers.
On the road no cat will stay with ktta or kta i run both ,the only truck that ever passed it was empty or bobtail? As for the sled pulling it comes down to traction ? notice the all run out of traction not power!!!
@@ruxoneto6560 yet the cat powered trucks always kick the snot out of every other engine make, i'll give you the traction on the sled pulling but i noticed you avoided commenting on the truck drags hauling a fully loaded trailer up hill, where are your ktta - kta's ? You can't blame traction on that, it's all horsepower and torque.
The truck drags are what less than a 1/4 mile? Lets go to a long hill like donner pass on interstate 80 start in Sacramento ca & head to reno nevada & see who gets to the top first with all the pistons & head gaskets in place??,, the KTA will come out on top every time.
@@ruxoneto6560 kta motors are infamous for vibrating apart, leaking oil, and if i'm not mistaken flexing cranks, why is it you think their stay in the industry was so short. 3408 cats and 1693 ta's could pull just as hard and they stood around a lot longer than the kta motors did. We had these huge bulldozers at work one was powered by a 1693 ta motor the other was a big ol vt 903 cummins or 855 needless to say the cummins engine constantly had to be repaired while the cat dozer had to work double shifts to make up for the lack of production from the cummins dozer. Go visit pdi diesel. They have a working truck with a little horsepower that'll take on any kta as well
@@JCA-Z the 903 engines were junk from what I hear. And KT's are very expensive so I assume that's why you don't see to many doing those Canadian up hill trailer racing. Plus they are just a rare engine now. Every engine leaks oil eventually. Keep your 6NZ C15, and C16. I like the old mechanical engines myself. I'd take a 3408, or 1693 for a spin though. Nothing against CAT. The Welker Farm's RUclips have a fleet of Big Bud tractors, running all Cummins. They seem to get the job done. As long as it's not an ISX 😂
@@martinstewart5205 This was my grandad’s last truck before he sold it to that guy and it pulled good but you might could outdo it. The A model he had in the early 2000s had the same engine but set up to 750 hp with 3.90 rears. I don’t know if you’d outdo that one
That it or kta will be well into the first million miles with maybe, maybe,an in frame while that X15,9 times outta 10 is gonna shit the bed at about 550 thousand! All that electronic crap and high operating temps and pressures just ain't gonna last.

God Bless your Dad. I'm glad his truck went to someone that's going to love and appreciate it as much as he did.
Cute! God bless you and your dad! Kindly regards! And hugs from Brazil.
Nice to hear about your dad. My grandfather drove for 40 years and I’ve been driving for 25. I hope your dad is doing well and enjoying life. 👍🇺🇸

My aunt sent me this and was like what the heck. Then I watched it and I was like oh crap that’s my grandad’s old truck! I love it
Oh and I think it’s pretty funny that my grandad took all the chrome junk off and this guy put it all back.

Great interview love those old KWs.
Wise man, KTA are the Big brother of diesel motors
Maybe but Scania is the big daddy of diesels 👍
@martinstewart5205 Back in '77, Scania didn't have a motor that was pimple on the behind of this motor... today yeah... not then
That’s a super sweet truck. Love seeing the old iron.
Very nice truck, original paint. Makes me wanna keep my 379 Pete.
Engine sounds good 👍.
There is something amazing about mechanical trucks.
Like the shades on the roof lights, never saw that before.
Thanks for sharing guys!! Learn something today!!
I drove many KTs an KTAs loved the power I broke several drive shafts ,u joints and yokes till I got used to the ceramic clutch

Yes they do.
Hey Jeff are you interested in a 1980 359 k19,600hp,with jakes,20 spd Spicer air shift
He's rite you don't want to be passed you aren't going to get passed if you got a kta
Pass everything but a fuel stop.
No if they are geared up they can get 5+mpg.

Can't believe anyone would leave them ugly fender mirrors
Where all of the K series of cummins made by kamatsu?
The answer would be: none of them were made by Komatsu. The KT is simply the KT and KTA series made by Cummins.
It idles to smooth for the KT,s I've seen, & I ran 1 in a 1977 kw k100, with 15 speed, it never idled smooth, it "loped" , or surged, when idling
