Great points in the video. I agree with everything for the most part. The only thing I would mention though is that height plays a huge role as well to how muscular you look. People always throw out that 145-150 lb range like if weigh only that much you must look skinny. But if you are a manlet like me and somewhat lean, 150 lbs on someone who is 5' 6- 5'7 will look pretty good on you and you could still have some impressive numbers

I was about 178 18 years old when I found drugs and went down to 139 at 5'10 in january 2020. When I got into working out in the pandemic I was frustrated because I felt so exhausted with just jumping squats and pushups, but wouldn't let go of my my (shitty) abs in fear of people thinking I was fat and ugly. I've steadily bulked back up to 170 in the last 6 months or so and everything went up (squats, bench, deadlifts, all my calisthenics except what I do at home are weighted, ohp, etc), despite being heavier I find it easier to run and feel more athletic than ever, yet I still look in the mirror and feel like a fat lard. Your videos help a lot man, even when I just want to puke all my food out, I know it's worth much more than giving in to the masses and their standards. Thanks to you. :)

  • @LeeEverett1

I gotta defend Jeff a little, he has said numerous times in videos that he doesn't recommend or expect his viewers to get as lean as him due to how difficult and physically demanding it is to maintain all year round. He says that ideally people should just aim at getting to 10-15% body fat and I fully agree with that.
Maybe in his older videos when he first started he would say alot of BS, but nowadays I genuinely believe he just wants people to enjoy working out and enjoy their nutrition in a healthy way.
Otherwise I agree with what you're saying.

However, I was super weak on weight training. When I start Olympic weightlifting about 5 months ago, I start eating a lot and my weight gained about 11lb. The quest for the ideal 6 pack seems to never go away (while YT and IG continue to feed body dysmorphia). Great comments, especially re Doucette who, remember, went after Stephanie Buttermore when she gave up starving herself to go all in. Naturals probably need to decide if they want to look "pretty" aka shredded, or deal with a bit of fat gain in order to build strength. Nice work!

I love when you bring the Gospel Truth.....I was not as lucky as you with women, but I found the right one, by just being me, staying faithful, and learning the difference between lust & love. I was 6ft 2 135 lbs the day I got married, and Liza weighed 140 lbs the day we married. She didn't care what I looked like & I didn't care what she looked like, we loved each other, and that mattered 1st & foremost. These influencers are leading so many young people & interested in fitness & looking good for our mates & spouses it's leading to a whole partial part of the population that doesn't have ED's & the other ED even because the hormones are screwed up they can't function for the ladies they want to get. It's impossible to completely stop it, but people like yourself, who have a bigger voice because of your reach, have to fight the good fight and some of us out there with not as big a place on platforms do appreciate & applaud you telling the truth & not holding back.

I was trying to cut when I was 150lbs to get abs because Greg said “if your abs aren’t showing, you’re fat!” I ended up recomping because when you weigh 150 you can only calorie restrict so much, I was maintaining weight while eating 1700-2000 calories per day. It kind of worked but always felt fat even tho people would call me skinny. I started bulking in early July and am now 160 and continuing my semi lean bulk. Thx again man. This lead me to develop binge eating disorder for over two years. With the help of this video and changing my restrictive mindset i have now overcome binge eating and I’m now back on the gain train 🚂
I have started making content helping others stop binge eating and just wanted to say thank you for this video has it really help me man 👍

Having a really hard time increasing calories to a mild surplus, but Ive worked too damn hard to be scrawny. It sucks... Lost 80 lbs, but I've been so deathly afraid to "get fat" again that I've severely deprived myself of food. I just hope I haven't dieted off the muscle I worked so hard to build. Thanks for the work convincing people in my situation to stop the excessive cuts and stuff like that. So much bad advice out there. Your video about a client bulking his way into better abs made a big difference in my perception of how things can be.

I spent 1 year been the typical "lean calisthenics guy", the gains were good at the beginning, but because of my bodyfat distribution and lack of hypertrophy i lost a ton of Weight (specially for an already lean guy) only because i wanted a six pack, My calisthenics perfomance "improved" (only in numbers) but i was barely capable of lift 45 pounds.
Fortunely i entered the gym and discovered de pleasure of the Bulk.
If you want to have a six pack, the Best way for a natty is to grow the abs as Many as possible, not being anorexic.

Just discovered your channel by following your epic Greg rant.
Well said about ab anxiety. Visible abs have zero to do with health or performance. Look at the top athletes in almost any sport. Do any of them look like "fitness" models with a hard six pack? Very few, and the ones that do are probably in a sport where weight to strength ratio is extremely important (gymnastics comes to mind) and have cut weight for competition. But look at the NBA, NFL, NHL, pro surfing, pro snowboarding, pro skateboarding, ultra marathoners, bike racing, mountain biking - any hyper specialized sport. Almost none look like "fitness" models. because this is what real athletes look like. Specialized bodies with healthy body fat built for performance.

Having fat is healthy. I barely had any fat when I was at 106lbs. Now I'm at 120lbs. and I feel amazing and energized every day since eating in a surplus.

I think this was my problem back when I was 205-210ish at 6'5" and was the fittest I ever have been. I ended up giving up feeling like I couldn't lose that small but of stomach fat. Then lofe happened and I just put it off and gained back all the weight. I'm trying to lose it more slowly this time. Last time I basically would do multiple day fasts, and even did two week long fasts. No excercise besides walking. I lost 45-50 pounds very quickly.

Man, if only these youngins would realize that being lean and ripped doesn't impress girls as much as they think. When I was a beginner in my "athlean-x train like an athlete" days I fell into the same trap as the guy who sent you this message regarding calories and bodyfat. I thought abs was THE muscle girls liked. (Don't get me wrong it's not the beginner's fault, it's these dumbass influencers' fault).
Having come to my senses a couple years later, I ditched all that shit. Now it's compounds, progressive overload and slight calorie surplus and I feel so much better about myself. Not only that, but girls notice me way more, because I can actually occupy some space and look like I lift. Lastly, just personal experience, but my traps and glutes garner way more attention now than my abs ever did.

Being lean and ripped isn’t healthy due to low body fat %. A flat stomach is perfectly fine. I rather have a strong core than a strong looking core.

My physique looks alright and I don't look skinny or anything but my weight is quite low or atleast according to you it is anyway, guess its time to ask my mum to do more shopping.

It was only through a bunch of videos from other content creators, one of them being the Doucette response you did a while back, did I realize why I was spinning my wheels. Started putting on weight and actually making progress and enjoying lifting more. Literally like half my videos are about this shit because there's way too many dudes out there with similar stories.

For me works eating normally but also doing intermittent fasting, usually 16-8 window but sometimes I can do also OMAD (but for a short period of time). Honestly you can bulk yes but works even better if you do some intermittent fasting together, leaving the body to burn the fat stored and reorder insulin resistence which is also important. It you just eat eat and eat without control you’ll just get fat.
Do intermittent fasting, train 2-3 times a week every muscle group, eat meat, eggs, fish and everything that boot your testosterone hormones. This method worked pretty much at least for me, but I prefer not be too much big, more to be lean with definition. So if you wanna get big you will have to eat more of course but the risk to get fat is also very high so be careful, do intermittent fasting if you have a shitty metabolism like me
