Yes, a majority of people don't realize you actually need lumbar flexion to train the abs to get the ROM. I see people who do rope cable crunches with their backs straight (essentially looking like a cable pullover) OR people doing leg raises on the captain's chair or hanging, all with their back completely straight/neutral. I used to correct people but as the gym culture evolved to don't-you- ever-approach-anyone, I stopped.

When I was a teen, my martial arts instructor showed me that exercise you are doing on the bench (the leg raises). But he added an extra move that really builds the muscle. After the raise/crunch to your stomach, you kick/thrust your feet up like you are kicking the ceiling. It really adds extra effort and difficulty and burns like a mother.

I'm so glad I found your channel. I started lifting 1 year ago primarily to lose weight. I was morbidly obese at 278 pounds and cut down to 146 in 9 months. After about 3 months of lifting my progress stalled and even reversed. I did a short 2 month bulk then cut again for 1 month and was at 143 pounds. Doing weighted pull up variations, OHP, & zercher squats I feel my core being worked really hard! And even though I am 185 and I would say at least 20 to 22% body fat I can see a visible 4 pack when I flex.
So I think if I lose like 20 or more lbs it would be there for sure!
Plus the main function of the abs is spinal flexion and if you do like deficit stiff leg deadlift that will definitely hit the main core of the abs since your back will be very rounded like a macondald arch. Which normally do that lift twice a week, sometimes once a week if my lower back don’t feel fully recovered.

There are two categories of men - one that have been generally lighter or not done that much heavy lifting. And one that has generally been heavier or done much heavier lifting. The second category will find it easier to get abs and will see abs on their first cut generally. The first category will take several years to see them - UNLESS you do heavy direct ab training. 4 months of direct training gave me a visible 4 pack during a bulk while prior cuts had failed. So heavy ab training is goated and most men could get abs with it even in the 15-18% bodyfat range.

It lets you have higher testosterone levels, sleep much better, train a lot harder, recover better, and just feel better overall.
Ironically, you wind up having a lot more energy and overall NEAT. So you wind burning more cals by default helping to counterbalance. Overall life's better without the stress of cal deficits to see your abs slightly better.

@REVIVALFitness - I used to be a chronic overtrainer and cortisol junkie. Way too much frequency, intensity, and volume.
Plus, a ton of high intensity cardio and being in calorie deficits more often than maintenance/surplus. So more often than not I slept and felt like shit.
It's amazing how much healthier it feels doing full body 3x per week focusing on strength, walking and LISS cardio only, and eating as much as I should be.

I find that being lean is more than enough to show decent abs as long as you do compounds. It's prob my least favorite muscle group to train. The feeling of burning abs mid-set is just a horrible feeling to me.

When I did my first serious cut at 5'8" to 150lb. I was lean but no real abs. I still had 400 plus dead lift, 300 squat and 250 bench around that weight, I just didn't directly train abs enough or long enough. I had just started direct training while cutting which obviously didn't do a whole lot.

I first got abs at 31 during my first consistent year of training, but I slowly cut down from 185 and probably had the full six by like 165 ish. Cutting down is the answer for *some* but your BMI probably should be above like a 26 or so. Probably also genetically dependent, I find I don't need much direct ab training as there's been long stretches I've skipped it, though now I do it anyway.
