    It's funny that Greg says you only need a 30 calorie surplus to justify maingaining and at the same time talks about how food labels lie and it's impossible to track small calorie adjustments. So how do you actually know you're in a slight surplus instead of just maintaining or in a slight deficit? You need to see the scale slowly trending up. But now I don't care about abs. I weigh 180 now @ 6 ft, lift heavy 5 days a week and EAT ALOT.. Don't even take supplements. Just eat eggs, dairy and veggies. My lifetime goal is to reach 190 lbs and look good while wearing a shirt.. Fuck body dysmorphia.

    Great video, as always! There should be some sort of study comparing one group eating at maintenance to another bulking and then cutting and a final group cutting and then bulking. It does not sound like something particularly difficult to conduct. Greg's assumption is that the extra muscle gained while bulking is then lost when cutting to become more aesthetic.

    • @REVIVALFitness
      @REVIVALFitness  2 года назад +8

      I’m sure there are studies related to this. But such studies often include people who are complete novices, obese, bad exercise programming, etc. Studies need examined thoroughly, and beyond that, people cannot be trusted to measure and stick to calorie numbers. This is why the PubMed army can’t be taken as gospel.

    • @TheBcoolGuy
      @TheBcoolGuy 2 года назад +1

      Muscle doesn't disappear so fast. It wants to be on your frame, especially if you've had it for a good while. Months at least. And then you start eating a bit more again after your cut and you regain everything you lost. The best play is to go full bulk as soon as you're done cutting and you'll springboard into yet another fantastic bulk.

    I first bulked a couple yeaes ago and bulking did so much for my strength.
    Was stuck with a 225 bench for 5, a 275 squat for 5 and a 300ish deadlift for 5 for a year.
    In a matter of months eating a small surplus I got a 285 bench for 5, a 350 lbs squat for 5, and 400 deadlift for 5.
    I couldn't believe I left all that progress out for a year by fearing a little body fat.

      That's what I've been going through now. Former fat guy, never quite had a six pack, but for the first time since I was a kid, I was able to see my top two abs, and was afraid to put the weight back on. I've recently started eating more. I haven't noticed any strength gains just yet, as it's my first week on an intentional bulk, but I'm hoping to start seeing progress again soon.

    I'm 22, 194cm and about 88KG. I've been working out consistently and hard (5 times/week) for 2 years but spent most of that time 'maingaining'. My starting weight was around 76KG, so I've made solid progress, but I wonder how much bigger I would be if I wasn't afraid to eat a bit more food. I'm now at a surplus of 200-500 calories per day and will run this bulk for about 6 months, as I currently have visible abs. I've been watching a lot of your videos and you have managed to convince me that bulking is the best way forward, when nobody else has. Cheers.

    I generally agree with you but I think its important to mention that “maingaining” isnt the same as recomping. Recomping involves running maintenance calories to build muscle and lose fat at the same time, while “maingaining” or previously referred to as “gaintaining” means maintaining a body fat percentage while building muscle. Since your weight is going up, it also means you are putting on fat. Essentially maingaining in theory is just a bulk with a small enough surplus. Kind of semantics but the distinction matters I guess.

Sure I got little chubby, but my rep strength, set strength, endurance, strength and power all increased. Then I did a minucut and maintained all my gains from the bulk, while shaved of the powerbelly I got from the bulk.

    This ab-anxiety concept is so true. I used to be obese, somehow gradually just become soft 185lbs 34.5 inch waist ~23% bf. I decided to lose some weight and am now about 170lbs 31.5inch waist ~17% bf. I’ve got an underdeveloped upper body (11.5 inch arms and 40 inch chest) and a respectable lower body (23 inch legs and 15.5 inch calves). Undecided if I should cut and then bulk or just bulk, so what’s your opinion?

    • @dr.weeniehutjr

      I say bulk man. If you’re underdeveloped and at 17% formerly obese that’s probably gonna be the bf range you do your bulking, from 17-25%. Anecdotally I did the same thing except my legs were underdeveloped compared to my upper body, and I spun my wheels at 17% bf for like over a year trying to get leaner and made no progress on my lifts. Bulked up to 25% made the best gains I ever have

Listening to other people for technique advice was also a played a part, but once I bulked I skyrocketed and the only thing handling me back was not training harder. After fixing both my deadlift went from 180 to a 405 pr in 3 months, squat from struggling with 135 to a 240 pr, 65 lbs dips and pull ups for 4-5 reps in 4 months. After watching this video I realized I have to bump up the calories over 3500kcal because my weight is consistently at 160-165. Many people don’t understand that abs are not made in the kitchen, they are revealed in the kitchen. And if you never make them in the gym, you will reveal small weak abs. Sure you can’t control your insertion points but you can control the size of them. Abs are like any other muscle accumulation of tonnage is going to hypertrophy them and show through at a higher body fat percentage too, it’s better than being skinny with abs trust me. Neck too don’t forget neck and calves, that’s a different discussion but if you have high calve insertions that just means the mass you pack on will pop more, and you can pack it on trust me.

    It really does take a long time to build muscle naturally, in my experience it comes with starting early in your early 20's or high teens, during that period i was always skinny lean, no matter how hard i trained, but now here i am in my mid 30's and i've almost doubled my size and in terms of my strenght i do feel a lot stronger, i could never have achieved that in my 20's, i think its due to age and how well you conditon yourself in the gym during that crucial decade from 20 to 30 years old, because i lifted weights when i was younger, now i'm finding it so much easier to pack on size and lift more than 100kg/220 pounds on the bench, be patient guys, this is a life long goal. do i have abs? i used to, but i would much rather trade abs for actual strengh and size anytime

      @@REVIVALFitness as I recall, he says that he recommends lean bulking in his review of Jeff Nippard’s lean bulking diet. That was an earlier video of his that I’d watched. I’d heard Nippard, Athlean X, Kinobody, Buff Dudes, and so on touting lean bulking/maingaining/maintaining/gaintaining/whatever as a bulking and cutting alternative before stumbling onto Greg. I was on the bulking and cutting train back then, which I personally never enjoyed. I was a theme park performer at the time, and had to show off my physique on a regular basis, so traditional bulks were not conducive to the roles that I had to fulfill. Greg convinced me that that there was another way, and it changed a lot for me and my fitness (amongst other tidbits of advice that he’d given me). I never felt as though being close to 20% gave me an edge that 10-15% didn’t. In my eyes, traditional bulking and cutting is the bigger crock. I was under the impression that I needed to LOSE my abs in order to progress in the gym. Objectively not true. I tried maingaining at 6-7%, (just to try). No bueno. Upped it to 10%. Still not quite satisfied. Upped it a few percentage points further, and BOOM. I’m good. That was a bit over a year ago. My workouts last an hour and a half, and my intensity and volume are both sound. I’m getting bigger and stronger, and I’m not having to think about changing a lot in my routine (consistency is nice). About 12-14% body fat eating 3,500 cals or so. But these are all estimations at the end of the day. Both body fat percentages and calorie consumption (as I can only imagine the average RUclips Fitness consumer isn’t weighing their food). And correct me if I’m wrong, but you aren’t recommending that your subs strive for a specific body fat to bulk from, right? Assuming that I am right, then shouldn’t that kind of be the end of this debate? I can only imagine that you wouldn’t recommend that your subs go much beyond 20% body fat, as that’s certainly not healthy. And Greg has said on multiple occasions that 15% is likely the healthiest body fat for the average male, which doesn’t sound like single digits to me. But I don’t want to make this about Greg, as it is also one of my missions as a trainer to promote a maingain/lean bulk approach as a viable option. So many people already think they’re leaner than they are (my experience as a personal trainer: people do not understand body fat AT ALL), so I don’t want to begin to promote bulking, at least in a traditional sense. But in regards to Greg contradicting himself, I’m sure he has, as we all have, but I don’t know that I’ve experienced his contradicting himself on this specific topic 🧐

    Man I wonder if you could do a collab with Iron Musket. Dude is tiny yet he has serious body dysmorphia. I'd love to see that dude get on a serious bulk.

      He discussed my Greg nuke video in on his channel a while ago. Never directly spoken to him. But he’s been buying into RUclips BS for years unfortunately.

      Thank you. The messages I get from young lifters are crazy. They’re ruining their lives over this crap.

    I'm another example that really benefited from bulking. I'm gaining about 1.5-3kg every mesocycle (they're 6 weeks + deload week) and just not really increasing in bf %. I was supposed to cut a few mesos again, assuming I'd gain too much fat, but I still have abs. They're a bit more blurry than they were before, but I gained 20kg and actually look pretty big. I still gain about 5kg on my bench press each meso, and about 7.5 on squat and deadlift. I feel amazing and can't believe I used to spin my wheels for a very long time. I'm still pretty weak (as for youtube standards), as I'm about 2.25/3.5/4.5, but I hope I'll be proper strong in a decade. I " "plateaued" at a 75kg bench and at a 140-150kg deadlift for half a year. These past 6 months, I gained 17.5kg on my working sets on my paused bench press, 30kg on my working deadlifts and 22.5kg on my working squats. I curl the 20kg dumbbells for 4 sets of 9 from 16kg. I think I'm still at the same bf%. The gains are not slowing down at all, they're actually increasing faster because I refine my program over time as I learn what works for me. Can't believe I legit might bench 130 kg on my birthday in 6 months.

    I was fat, i leaned down by over 30kg (66lbs) and now I'm getting "fat" again on purpose. It is really easy to lose fat, first time round that 30kg took me 7 months. It could've been done quicker, or slower. Doesn't matter. Think how long it will take you to build 30kg (66lbs) of muscle? Somewhere between 15 years and never. Dropping it took 7 months.

    I wish I had better info like this when I first started, rather than watching people like Athlean X. While I believe he provides some great advice, the truth is as NATURAL athletes to make progress we NEED to eat a lot and lift heavy, not try to maintain year round abs and stay lean which leads us nowhere.

    I was bored the other day so I decided to develop a body recomposition formula.
    The formula basically proves that you can bulk a significant amount of body mass and still not get f@t, because although you'll gain f@t mass, you'll also gain lean mass and it balance out the BF% to some degree (that degree depends on your P-ratio).
    Borrows from a few concepts I got from RP such as the P-ratio and rate of muscle gain.
    I can try to type it as a document if you want it. Anyone should be able to understand once they have a basic understanding of algebra.
