for all the times i've been taught about this experiment, i never once pictured it being performed so ... aggressively. i just pictured a dude sitting in a chair with a bell.
It's very cool how they became more relaxed compared to earlier videos, there are even jokes now quite regularly and it seems these two are good friends. Nice work, keep up.
I'm a great dog fan. This was a wonderful episode. I have a suggestion for Objectivity from the USA. I recently read that the Library of Congress has a new Librarian. Brady and Keith should pack a bag and travel the pond to give us an insiders tour of the LoC. I bet Keith could easily solicit an invite. You both deserve a field trip and I can't think of better envoy than the likes of you.
As always, a fascinating episode; thank you for this series! One question: In the book of minutes shown at 2:48, what is the annotation above the one of the dog? "Dr. Stukely produces (something regarding the minutes from May 1st)" that has some form of inscription - what could that be, and what could the inscription mean?
At 2:47 and 3:24 there is a passage in a different style, consisting of characters that don't look exactly like the Latin alphabet and not in cursive like the rest of the page. Maybe Keith could shed some light on what it means?
From what I could make out, the passage directly preceding it reads: [Dr.?] Aukely produced the key mentioned in the minutes of the first of may and the inscription was in the following character. A mystery key? I'm even more intrigued now!
I had a dream a few nights ago that I finally got to visit the UK/Europe (I'm American), and all I remember is that my only goal throughout my dream was to visit The Royal Society so that I could meet Keith. Damnit, subconscious!
Objectivity got a huge 20k subscriber boost (including me) when Vox did a video two months ago where they celebrated their million-subscribers milestone by the staff recommending all their favourite channels.
On April 1st you should take a mystery box out of the archives, but it should be empty, so it would be like: Brady: So Keith, what's the story behind this object? Keith: Well this is air, it's really interesting, because we use this to breathe.
> When you think science, and when you think dogs, you probably think of... ...the scene in Young Einstein where Charles Darwin is introduced, with his beagle named Beagle. ...or something, it's unfortunately been a while since I saw the movie.
Since everyone seems to be on about Laika, I was wondering if you would at all be interested in making a video about whatever is in the archive about this memorable doggy moment. I'm sure there would be an object or two you could pull up as an excuse to show the stuff the Royal Society has on this memorable moment in history.
Personally, my dog is basically a mathematician. He can do 2-1, 10-9, 205-204, 0+1, -2,730-(-2,731), 1,067,633,305^0, [25x-24=1, solve for x], and a seemingly infinite number of various complex mathematic problems.
Noremaad the dog is probably just remembering certain responses to you commands rather than actually doing maths in its head. A few con men have done this trick with horses. Edit: lol they even mention a case in the video
Hi there Objectivity people. I have been a subscriber since episode one and I generally do enjoy your work: it is a little humorous, a little science-y, a little quirky and charmingly, Britishly, self aware. In this episode though, I find that you make crude jokes about, and at the expense of, animals that where being used for research in most painful ways. Now, I think scientific experimentation on animals is sometimes needed and sometimes that it even needs to be painful (and fatal) but what it need not be is disrespectfully joked about. You might think that Pavlov's experiments were necessary (I tend to disagree) and valuable (I tend to agree) but they where, in absolutely no mening of the word, ethical. It is easy to fall into a jargon about things that one is exposed to regularly and in the case of science, one of the things we are exposed to is a somewhat detached attitude towards the animals that are used, and sometimes rather gruesomely used up, in the pursuit of, hopefully, knowledge. To some, it might be rather revolting to hear such lapses of empathy from someone that himself have dogs. Granted, I am a meat eater, and some might find it hypocritical that I complain about jokes at the expense of the anguish of long dead dogs but will happily eat recently killed pigs and cattle. There would be something to that critique but there is a difference: one is killed as swiftly as possible and the other is put through prolonged, excruciating anguish. For both groups of animals, I feel, there should be some humble respect. Any way, that made me unsubscribe in disgust, but I thought better of it and decided to give you a "second chans" and to re-subscribe and write this explanation of my thoughts on the video and the subject. I apologize for the rambling and for my lacking grasp of English, as it is not my mother tongue.
To add on to the idea of training dogs, the food word may not be a bad idea. Mark ten cups with an unique alphabet. Put food in alphabet c all the time. How to check dog does not distinguish from smell? It will open c even if food is not present.😅
Can't think of any except Schrödinger's one, which didn't exist since it was a thought experiment to introduce people more easily to paradoxes of quantum mechanics. It wasn't actually tested since the experiment itself doesn't really achieves anything, just the concept of it does.
My m8 would always say his dog could spell and would always ask do you want to go a W-A-L-K you want to go a walk and the dog would go nuts! But no the dog couldn't spell for shit ! Lol
Thanks for another great video. Guys check out sixty symbols, if you love space, and physics! another one of Brady's channels. I am constantly craving more and more.. #objectivity #deepskyvideos #sixtysymbols
In Czechoslovakia they bred wolf-dogs to make the german shepherd stronger against the cold. It's difficult to train wolves though, so I think the breed is only like 6% wolf. Just sayin'
Keith makes the best puns I have ever heard. God they are good.
love this channel. The way the books are featured with the glowing text, Keith's soothing voice, and all of the history!
+Andy Rhine cheers. We like making them.
"You do anything for a biscuit if you're a dog" "Not just a dog" - Keith's reaction is priceless
when you think of science, and you think of dogs, you probably think of.... Laika.
The first dog to orbit earth in space!
That was my thought.
And after her, Belka and Strekla.
my first thought was 'beagle, no wait thats a boat'
My first thought was the russian "head transplant"-dog.
Same. HMS Beagle....oh wait...
we talked about her but didn't have any objects or documents that were appropriate.
for all the times i've been taught about this experiment, i never once pictured it being performed so ... aggressively. i just pictured a dude sitting in a chair with a bell.
Man I just adore Keith. Such an awesome guy.
It's very cool how they became more relaxed compared to earlier videos, there are even jokes now quite regularly and it seems these two are good friends. Nice work, keep up.
I visited Pavlov once. I rang his door bell and he came to open the door.
"When you think of science .. and you think of dogs you think of..." LAIKA! I think of Laika. *sniff*
This channel produces the most intriguing and yet satisfying videos. The content is great. Keep it coming.
These videos will age very well. Great stuff.
so when are you guys launching keith's stand up special?

This is one of my favorite RUclips channels. I feel so privileged to be able to see and learn about all of these interesting things.
Actually, Laïka, first living creature in space, came to my mind before Pavlov's dog ^^
Agree 100% !
First living creature in space? Humans
(as far as we know)
Keith seemed much more candid than usual!
As always, a fascinating episode; thank you for this series! One question: In the book of minutes shown at 2:48, what is the annotation above the one of the dog? keen eye - it was a little bit interesting!!!
Interesting enough for a future video, perhaps...? #tease
Nothing about what Scooby Doo would do for a Scooby Snack ...
"mouth watering"
these puns will be the end of me
Can't like this channel enough!. Please guys share them and Thumbs up the video's so it is linked to other videos more.
You two make such a lovely team!
I wish I could just wander through the archives there...I know I can't but still.
Same!

And Laika knew
Laika's life was through ~ The Divine Comedy, "Absent Friends"
Why does this channel have so few subscribers? That's a crime.
it is because YOU are not sharing our videos enough!!!
It has 15,000 more subscribers since I last saw a message like this. Be patient and be proud that you were here early! :)
and where is the patreon?
The selfish part of me is happy that we get this all to ourselves. No filthy outsiders making stupid comments.
Objectivity got a huge 20k subscriber boost (including me) when Vox did a video two months ago where they celebrated their million-subscribers milestone by the staff recommending all their favourite channels.
"We're not gonna talk about my dogs. Here's a picture of my dogs!"
Never change, Brady.
I love Keith's tie in this one.
On April 1st you should take a mystery box out of the archives, but it should be empty, so it would be like:
Brady: So Keith, what's the story behind this object?
Keith: Well this is air, it's really interesting, because we use this to breathe.
I don't know about dogs recognizing the word "FOOD", but I've read that crows learn to recognize the McDonalds' logo on bags.
Do you think the wolf-dog inspired the Hound of the Baskervilles?
> When you think science, and when you think dogs, you probably think of...
...the scene in Young Einstein where Charles Darwin is introduced, with his beagle named Beagle.
...or something, it's unfortunately been a while since I saw the movie.
What was written in the society's minutes at 3:25 in large letters on the left hand page?
Since everyone seems to be on about Laika, I was wondering if you would at all be interested in making a video about whatever is in the archive about this memorable doggy moment. I'm sure there would be an object or two you could pull up as an excuse to show the stuff the Royal Society has on this memorable moment in history.
+DemonXeron as a space history nut you can rest assured I asked Keith if he had a Laika treasure up his sleeve. Alas he could not recall one. - Brady
That is indeed a shame. Thanks for trying :)

I love Objectivity, but this video was for the dogs (pardon me, I must flea now).
Appawling joke, but don't terrier self up about it
do an objectivity on s.ramanujans math book...
What is high dutch (2:44)? I am Dutch and I have never heard of it
High Dutch, or Hoogduits, is basically German.
Lower Dutch, or Nederduits, is Nederlands.
Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language
Presumably Hochdeutch, or standard German.
Woof! (Keith at 0:03)
Cringing when I see Pavlov's dogs... poor dogs.. I surely can't be the only one?
realmenchangediapers you are not alone. Perhaps we saw Pavlovs favourite dog. But I am sure that Pavlov was not the dogs favourite master.
we need to bring the pun alert back! Kieth is killing us!
Maybe we do, as a public safety service.
I thought you'd talk about something related to Laika.
+Lupyrius we didn't have a good Laika object. I asked.
Is the big one a purebred Greyhound?
Below 1000 views. I viewed the video before posting.
Nice.
Did anyone else noticed the cameraman in the reflection in 0:56 ?
Now make one about cats!
In Keith's eyes everyone is very very famous. I never heard of these people. But then again I'm not a super human working at the royal society :)
not yet, you're not.
Objectivity
I'm working on it
All dogs are remarkable
re-bark-able

Nothing about Laika?
Ah yes, science being applied for the most noble of purposes - to certify that these boys were, indeed, good boys.
To add on to the idea of training dogs, the food word may not be a bad idea. Mark ten cups with an unique alphabet. Put food in alphabet c all the time. How to check dog does not distinguish from smell? It will open c even if food is not present.😅
Slick haircut Brady
Pavlov heard a bell and noticed that he forgot to feed the dog.
I would do long division for a biscuit
Appropriately enough, the one immediately before this "Remarkable Dogs" episode is #86, "Darwin and the Beagle".
Are there any remarkable cats in science?
There is and there isn't.
No cats are stinky and pointless.
Can't think of any except Schrödinger's one, which didn't exist since it was a thought experiment to introduce people more easily to paradoxes of quantum mechanics. It wasn't actually tested since the experiment itself doesn't really achieves anything, just the concept of it does.
Schodinger's Cat
Schrödingers Cat?
I don't think it could talk, if it could, it might have given the game away.
Keith in ring?
my dog just hits her head on my desk every morning... is that a special ability too?... or does it only make her "special"
no one is going to comment on pavlov's hand?
looks like he either broke his ring finger knuckle or he had a tumor on it in multiple pictures
No Pics of Laika😒
This episode was really fun. I would like to see you guys do a video on Jagdish Chandra Bose.
Duffer gets a biscuit for subtracting three from four but the folks on Numberphile don't get any treats at the end of the videos :(
+David Bernard Houck how do you know they don't?
Nobody is going to say how Hunter's dog looked derpy?
The. Paintings. Are. Not. Horizontal.
(It may be the lenses, but it was an occasion to annoy Brady)
The most famous dog I can think of is the one that went into space.
Oh, yeah, that one
My m8 would always say his dog could spell and would always ask do you want to go a W-A-L-K you want to go a walk and the dog would go nuts! But no the dog couldn't spell for shit ! Lol
why wasn't there a bad pun warning?
lol....it was good though. I like Keith's puns...Give us some more please!
Because all of Kieth's puns were great , mouth-watering even!
Thanks for another great video. Guys check out sixty symbols, if you love space, and physics! another one of Brady's channels. I am constantly craving more and more.. #objectivity #deepskyvideos #sixtysymbols
+Nikolaos good advice
In Czechoslovakia they bred wolf-dogs to make the german shepherd stronger against the cold. It's difficult to train wolves though, so I think the breed is only like 6% wolf. Just sayin'
Ja like dags?
3:38
so... now about famous cats?
when I think of science and dogs I think of the ones they shot into space
That looked really cruel
A dog that could not only speak, but that could speak in three languages?!
the dog handler could, not the animal.
When I think of science and dogs I think of Laika.
But no Leika or Lessie...
Just goes to show the importants of knowledge lol
Brady is wearing a shirt with a collar !!! OMG! Alert the press!
666th like, nice. \m/
Sausages!
#KeithRocks
To make video about this subject and not to include Laika is a crime against DOG!
Sorry, Brady. This just made me sad.
Hey brady, if you reply to this comment I'll give you a biscuit
rebarkable
All I can see is a man who tortured.
