Those videos are so good, I don't even know what to say. Fabulous! Funny! Fascinating! You would never expect a head librarian in a suit and designer glasses to be so witty and relaxed. And the guy who likes to open boxes is the perfect match. I'm sometimes amazed that your regular cohosts like Keith or The Professor have so much time and effort to give for your videos, but thankfully they do!
I hope i'm able to visit London one of these days the Royal Society is one of the place i'd like to see. I bet they got some cool herpetology stuff i'd like.
I recognized them as branding/brandishing/graving marks instantly. My guess is its either 'a work of personal experience' or an attempt to log documented fowl which is why it isn't complete. Either ownership couldn't be confirmed or the usefulness of the work was dismissed, maybe both, I'm sure.
They do tours at the royal society? Do I need to sign up? I wanna visit the royal society somewhere between 5-7 July but the site is a bit unclear about foreigners handling documents and I hadn't even read about any tours!
a quick guess before we go on, bookmarks or some out of signatures for bibles given the arche duke part maybe they didn't want to put their name but wanted to do a symbol
I am wondering whether these markings caused any pain to the swan? Since, as far as I can trust random blogs on the internet, they do have nerves in their bill.
+saschamuecke Biologists don't make a difference between the two. But colloquially it seems that "beak" is more often used for the pointy ones (I even feel it sounds "pointier") and "bill" for the flatter, rounder ones.
Matthias Smed Larsen its very differant, putting a swan on a dinner table strapped inside a decorative metal thing and marking a cow is very differant. marking the duck bills is very similar though, yes. i dont have any issue with that.
So a swan goes to the tattoo artist with a design and the tattoo artist asks "How will you be paying?" and the swan says: "Just put it on my bill".
HAHAHAHAAHH
I want to give you a high-five 🖐
LMFAO
I almost spitted my coffee!!!! This is brilliantly said!
Oh wow, that's genius
The Sir Martin interruption was quite funny :D
I think if I'm getting a tour with Keith I've already won.
+PINGPONGROCKSBRAH The prize is a private tour with Keith =)
Yep
Sorry Brady, your phone a friend was used up earlier. You don't get another lifeline!

As a Scandinavian, my immediate thought is that each mark is a "house mark", or in Norwegian, "bumerke", which wasn't all that far from the truth.
+Nillie Yes, I was thinking along similar lines!
HAHAHA Martin calls Brady and then chastises him for answering the phone. Martin is basically his uncle now.
I love it when Brady get a fresh haircut and Keith gets off a fresh wisecrack. I saw the tweet this morning and couldn't wait to get home to watch.
Love the Periodic Videos/Objectivity crossover! You need to get some kind of Brady Haran Avengers going with all the Warriors in one big video!
Sir Martyn's call was quite hilarious actually lol
"Up next: Mystery Markings - Pig hoof markings (with Francis Bacon)"
An Objectivity - Periodic Videos Crossover Episode!
Great to hear Dr. Poliakoff in this video!
I noticed the interference from the 800mhz-1900mhz signal his phone picked up and the mics... hadnt heard that in a while.
Oh my god he took off the gloves to answer the phone and never put them back on!
+darkman1362 they come off anyway to handle delicate paper
+darkman1362 hehehe... I also had a brief moment of: wait... mmmkay... what about the gloves? ...feeling relieved now :D
I hope i'm able to visit London one of these days the Royal Society is one of the place i'd like to see. I bet they got some cool herpetology stuff i'd like.
Sir Martin’s phone calls in it was lovely!
I recognized them as branding/brandishing/graving marks instantly.

Either ownership couldn't be confirmed or the usefulness of the work was dismissed, maybe both, I'm sure.
they absolutely looked like skateboard designs
Or band-aids lol
+tomiadorjan handy in case you saw the archbishop of canterbury's skateboard floating around in the new river
+tomiadorjan Thats exactly what I said on Brady's Instagram when I saw them!
I love this ! I'd say even with those hints it was a pretty wild and unexpected answer , good job brady !
Ok, taking that tour of the Royal Society is now on my bucket list ^_^
For a non-native speaker "swan bills" is quite a strange expression :D
+YourMJKTube even for a native speaker it's not the most commonly used expression...
That office is lovely.
Lovely video! Here's a little joke for french viewers. Brady: "Non, je n'arrive pas à deviner". Keith: "Tu ne vois pas les signes?".
¬¬
Camilo Hiche err, well thanks for the reply, but I've got no idea what it means (I'm a bit old)
Lol that's a pretty good play on words.
In French Swan is called cygnes pronounced the same as signes which means signs in English ...
It should be a rule that if Brady leaves his phone on for a shoot, all callers become special guests via speakerphone.
Have you guys done any videos on Robert Hooke? If so, would you ever consider doing more?
+ReppeNThA707 we sure have - ruclips.net/video/SvWSNEO8aww/видео.html ... There's always a chance for more in the future!
Objectivity Thanks a lot for the response. It's greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work fellas! Love these
Can't lie, that's probably the last thing I would have guessed.
Amazing stuff as always !
They do tours at the royal society? Do I need to sign up? I wanna visit the royal society somewhere between 5-7 July but the site is a bit unclear about foreigners handling documents and I hadn't even read about any tours!
It's better than what I thought they were...
Huge plasters.
Why have I only just found this channel
Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff has the coolest hair in science. It needs its own Vlog.
+Seedeng Jawn Time to become one too!
nice vid as always
Finally a new video!
lol 1st
Oh... To travel there again (look at the date of this posting) but they're not open, are they?
My guess is they're Milagras, like little healing charms or something.
Nope wrong
What happened with the white gloves after the phone call? Heraldry?
I wish I was drinking buddies with Keith...
They're swan bill markings. I read about them in a book somewhere.
a quick guess before we go on, bookmarks or some out of signatures for bibles given the arche duke part maybe they didn't want to put their name but wanted to do a symbol
That's so bizarre but love the video
Need more professor videos!
Keith what's the prize?
Wait he does tours?! Now I have to go to the royal society
Which one was Elizabeth's Swan?
I would like to see the most valuable object they have!
So crass! Objectivity shamelessly promoting Periodic Videos like Batman vs Superman! (Actually hilarious)
I'm not surprised no-one's guessed what it is - it's really obscure.
Is Martin wearing a Swatch???
What's the prize?
I am wondering whether these markings caused any pain to the swan?
Since, as far as I can trust random blogs on the internet, they do have nerves in their bill.
I failed the quiz. Great video :-)
But what's the prize?
Had to look up the word "bill" for "beak" - is there a difference between these two words?
+saschamuecke I think a bill is a type of beak that is very flat
+saschamuecke Bills are like flatter and mostly ducks, swans, and geese have them, but all birds have beaks... is my guestimation...
+saschamuecke
Biologists don't make a difference between the two. But colloquially it seems that "beak" is more often used for the pointy ones (I even feel it sounds "pointier") and "bill" for the flatter, rounder ones.
Another Dean of Lincoln and future Archbishop of Canterbury: Matthew Parker.
+Fhuj Sadly I hear he rather Parker Squared the interview.
I thought they were band aids (plasters? bandages?whatever they're called) with designs on them...
What didn't the swan owners mark their swans with name initials?
Unboxing video!
decorated swans? people back then sure where unique....
+Rinoa Super-Genius It's not that different from cattle marking I guess.
Matthias Smed Larsen

+Rinoa Super-Genius Oh, yeah that _is_ pretty weird. I thought you were talking about the duckbill designs.
Matthias Smed Larsen
lol. :P
I thought swans were like whales and they all automatically belong to the queen
what did martin said
+oldcowbb *Say, not said. It was not audible.
Any luck catching those swans then?
I thought the Queen owned all the swans in England.
You just can't make this stuff up.
What exactly is the prize Keith is talking about at the end. I fear he would take you to a back room and you'll never come out again.
Third
first
What is the prize?
