- A Local Feller had 3 of these and wanted one to work. He said fix one and the other two are yours so of course I hopped on that train and whooped one into shape. Follow along and learn how to service and repair your Lionel #671 Turbine Locomotives.

This was always one of my dream locos as a kid in the 60's. I used to look at my dad's Lionel catalogs, and pray that Dad would be able to find one for me. I finally picked up one of these at a collectables shop in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, and found it had the wrong tender. It took practically no work to get the engine running smoothly, but I had to completely rework the tender from the frame out. The wiring was gone so I replaced it with new wires the whistle motor was seized so it had to be rebuilt. The iron rod in the switch solenoid was rusted in place and had to be knocked loose and reworked, and I had to make a mounting tab to mount the solenoid to the whistle body. Everything cleaned up really nice and it runs like a gem. It was definitely worth the $75.00 I paid for it.
75 for the loco and beat up tender? Still sounds like a pretty good deal to me!! That tender sounds like it lived under a waterfall for awhile :-)
Who doesn't remember The Blue Lagoon? Thank you so much for letting me appear, we loved the cat clip too, we laughed so hard. Also learned a thing or two as well. I can't wait to get this beautiful engine back on the rails.

In a panic, we looked around, and then it occurred to me. We have one, count it, one lonely hobby shop out here, and they were able to accommodate me with the engineer hat. I felt kind of stupid to be honest because I had gotten my daughter a pink one there a couple of years ago and forgot.@@marklinzeit

Great video, Ron, once again. One of these days ,I am going to take a deep dive into my 027 Lionel Switcher 1615 0-4-0 that I first got in 1955 for Christmas and do a complete cleanup and lubrication. It's still running good but a bit more sluggish these days despite periodic basic cleanups.
Brooke Shields,yes. I used to see her every Sunday in Church back in the 1980's! She and her mother would sit in the pew directly in front of my wife and I. At that time, her mother owned a home in my town not far from me. My wife would exchange small talk with both of them, and Brooke would always say hello to me. It's a small world, Ron ❗

I’ve got 2 of these turbines! one is a sentimental piece that belonged to my great grandfather and is a first year (1946) which sits on the shelf as its gear has worn out and the wheels are cracked and the other was the first postwar locomotive I ever received and is a 1948 model. Both are very special to me and I love them dearly.

@@Benthetrainkid I would, I even have a replacement gear, but I have to pull the wheels out to replace it and I just don’t have the tools. I want to but I’m only 16 and not comfortable doing something like that cause I feel like I might break it more

A simple trick that really seems to work well in bringing Back the original surface in these black engines, is to use an old shoe brush or tooth brush with a light coating of black, paste shoe polish. Rub it in good. You don’t want any more than just Like a die stain. Then buff really well with an old shoe brush you’ll be amazed how well it works on some old engines. Brush it well enough that it won’t be subject to coming off. I can’t guarantee that it will work in all application environments, but when it does work, Wow! 🤗

The cat gagging and the open mineral spirits painting. 🤣 I have the 681 S2 Steam Turbine version and love it. I weaned it off of smoke pellets and onto Mega-Steam Smoke Pellet scented fluid. Pellets are getting expensive and hard to find.

You’re right calling the part you do, the Rotor. The Armature is attached to the allotted windings and the composite fixture Is called the Rotor, or Rotating assembly. This two part assembly is encased in the Stater, or Stationary fixed section of the motor. Terminology accuracy seems to be just another lost ability or concern of the newer generation. Thing-a-ma-jig seems to be as accepted nomenclature for “whatever”, and “whatever” works where education fails. Just my thoughts. Absolutely love your Videos and have learned a ton of useful info. You’re the “go to Guy” in my book. Thanks bunches!🇺🇸🚂
Thanks so much Steve. A couple of Fellers say a "rotor" is in a alternator and in DC motors that spinny piece is called a armature. I do want to be using the correct terminology but if Fellers cant line up with what to call it, it throws me off. Here's some of my pet peeves with terminology. That gas powered spinny torque-ee producing thing in the front of most vehicles........ Its not a motor but a..........."Engine". The 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton or up to a one ton, long box, 4 wheel but it could have 6 wheels, vehicle people use to haul stuff or pull trailers with. It's not a TRUCK. its a pickup. But what is a Feller to do. Funny how the engine is held into the frame with "motor mounts". Guess I will just sit down and have a cold "pop" or is it a "soda" ;-)

Just finished and yes Jeff is who I normally deal with when I'm ordering parts for my Lionels. He's very knowledgeable and once you get to know him he truly is a great guy! I've spent plenty of time on the phone just talking about everything with him and he's truly a jewel of a guy! Nice job cleaning that one up!
One day we will build one, we just moved so we have a little bit more room for the layout at this place. I have a 24' x 6' area to work with. Good thing RON has a video on how to do some bench work.

I'm from Connecticut, the whole Northeast is very densely populated. People are nice, but due to traffic congestion etc, most of us don't open up until we know you a bit.

I've been playing your 'all videos' playlist on the train room TV to help get me motivated. Video #12 in that list is by some other guy, so you may want to edit that. My old three rail HO trains are set up just like this one, with the magnets and reverser and flashing lightbulb when you reverse. And I liked the cat and milk reaction shot to the dirt - well selected!!

Hey Ron, instead of calling it a body can you try to remember to call it a boiler shell? I own a 1946 (first year) 671 with the original smoke bulb and 671W tender all with the original boxes. Still runs great! Loved this episode by the way!! Also Brooke Shields still looks hot today!

Great video Ron. That 671RR is a classic piece. I have one myself with my 2179WS set. The RR stands for Rerun. It was made in 1952 during the Korean Conflict. It was made one year only, along with the 726RR in 1952. It has a nice collector value because of the RR (Rerun) designation.
The classic model is none other than the beautiful Brooke Shields!!
BTW, I’m from Long Island, NY. There’s still a few good guys from NY. LOL

I have one of these steam turbine engines but it's numbered 681 it came with the 2671 w 6 axle tender with whistle it came with a few rail cars and a caboose it was a good size unopened box found in my aunt's attic after she passed away one of the cars was a milk car the platform to the milk car was never assembled do you have any information on what year this could have been

22:58 Bearings, bushings, ball bearings, they're all a load bearing structure that reduces friction between moving and stationary parts, but Mr. Bushing might get offended hearing that he's just a boring bushing. Anyway, those bushings on the motor look like Oilite bearings, which are highly technical gizmos made out of sintered bronze which is porous and retains oil. Grease, I understand, does not play well with an Oilite. Just a heads up/FYI.

Nicely done Ron...I've been using the sharpie touch up for a while quite successfully... works well with the silver and some of the other colors too...I never tried the buffing brush (will have to give that a whirl ) but I smudge the sharpie with a cloth or even my fingers to help it blend in...Got the idea from watching a car model guy detailing the car trim, wipers, and window gaskets...

My very first Steam Locomotive was a Lionel 2020 Turbine I had to learn how it works and fixed it. My first Lionel in life was Dads original 1951/2 NYC 2344's ABA setup I had found as a child and learned how to fix them and keep them running all these decades now! I remember him telling me about having to wait for the new releases from Lionel in order to get the B unit which his Train dealer in Bronx was getting in 1952.
Oh yeah Ron! Thanks I'm in Upstate NY LMAO! Otherwise yes Sir man, you it's a tough world inside the Ratrace of the Northeast! No lies there Lol but we are nice, once we get to realizing that you're not a threat to us Lol, in this place our defense is our only offense! We see people a little differently than you do, and see how deeply depraved humanity can become here man! Out west of the Mississippi River though its a totally different world and folks actually talk with one another, complete stranger's no less LMAO! Here no one talks unless absolutely necessary, like "Watch Out and Duck, Another Drive By Shooting" in the Dumpster fire called NYC! Howdy Ron! Wow cool! I got two of them 681’s. Very sturdy locomotives. I was so proud I knew it was Brooke Shields and someone already answered.
Ok so the shoe brush thing works . Niiiice! Why didn’t you try to shine up the chassis since it dulled. Like that the shoe brush helps cover up the sharpie paint repair . All us 33%ers got to shame all those others so they will watch all the way through too!

The earlier versions of the turbines from 1946 and 47 have loose ball bearings. I learned the hard way when I opened my 1947 671 motor and the ball bearings went everywhere and got lost.

I think you'll agree with me that the 671, 681, & 682 are probably the easiest Lionel steamers to service. They are tanks.

I'm not much of a painter. I have a pre-war loco and passenger set here that's gunna be a trial run for me. But for the most part I'm better at fixing than making look pretty
I'm glad you have found a fellow model railroader locally. It's also good to see another O gauge video. I collect mostly post war o gauge myself. I have one of the Lionel turbines and I have serviced it to the best of my ability. It runs and the lights and smoke unit workers. However, when I run it, the brushes spark against the commutator. It causes a slight burning smell. Any suggestions?
I believe all the Lionel or actually all the AC powered motors have small sparks taking place at the brushes. That smell is referred to as "ozone" and is highly addictive ;-)

Hey Ron, love your channel. I am one of those 33 percenters. I am working on a Rivorrosi Milwaukee road 4 6 2. I bought it at a train show used many moons ago. One of the motor brushes is cashed. I substituted a brush from a pancake motor and used some copper wire to make up the length difference. Of course, it ain't quite right. Do you have any sources for Rivarossi parts. Specifically motor brushes? Thanks!
Rivarossi is still around producing stuff over there in Italy. Check there website or Ebay. So far I have not had to source any new brush sets for the HO stuff so I'm at a loss for any other suggestions. Thanks for your support of the channel!!

That’s Brooke shields! Just was wondering, I have a 671 the axle bushings are just shot on. Any tips for replacing them? Hard to find info about if they push in till they stop or if there is a height you need to stop at? Always enjoy the videos Ron.
Yup! The wheels will have to be pulled off to remove the axles. The drive gear will have to be pulled off as well to get to them axle bushings. Need special wheel pullers and arbor press to do the work needed. Not sure if they have a lip on them or not. Never had to tackle worn axle bushings yet.

Magne traction wasn't introduced until 1950. My guess is that someone changed bodies. In 1950, the number was changed to 681 reflecting magne traction. The 671 RR was made only in 1952, due to a shortage of magnetic material during the Korean War.
I agree with your statements except the body swap one. None of these have magna-traction.

If that's the case, one of them can't be a 1950, Ron. Unless it was on the dealer's shelf from 1949. On one of the tenders it looked like it had the backup lights, or am I mistaken? If it does, try to determine if it's factory original or added on later. I am by no means an EXPERT, but I've been with Lionel and American Flyer for most of my 76 years. @@ronalddevine9587 there is two 1952 671 RR's. One is a type 1 and the one I repaired in the video is a type II. Both of these have the correct tender. a 2046W-50. The 3rd 671 is a 1948 typeVII and it does not have the correct tender. I could be looking these up wrong in the Doyle Lionel guidebook. I showed a picture of what the correct 12 wheel lighted tender would look like if it had it. Them 2671W tenders are very pricey on the eBay :-)

They are costly. I just want something that looks nice (not perfect) and runs well. Keep up with the good work on 0 & S gauge trains.
