I worked on a 253 engine that has a very similar brush assembly. All it really needed was to have the brushes and the brush plate cleaned and runs very well. But I had a devil of a time trying to figure out how to get the brush assembly put back on without the brushes flying out. I finally arrived at a solution of putting a piece of cardboard underneath to hold the brushes in and taping it to the backside. Once the assembly was screwed in place, I pulled the tape off and pulled the piece of cardboard out from underneath and everything was OK. But I think your toothpick idea looks like it would have been a LOT easier. Wish I had seen this video back then! lol

Outstanding video!! Do you by chance have a video out on how to change the prewar bottom pick up fiber plate and rollers? Someone said I need a small spreader?

After seeing this video I was able to win an auction on Ebay for the same model in great shape that has replacement wheels and rollers. The cab is in VG shape. Runs well. But I have a problem with my Lionel 253 I am hoping you can help me with. The wheels need to be replaced and I bought new ones from Hennings but they don't have gears and I can't find replacement ones. Am I supposed to be able to remove the gears from the old wheels to reuse? Looks like 1 piece and in any event I can't get them to move. Suggestions? Thanks for all of your great videos.

Looks like this 248 is an early production model, seeing that this one only has one drive gear instead of two like on mine, as well as having spoked wheels, and tab/slot coupler support.

Yes between 1927 and 32, the 248's came with 4 different motor types, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Some with solid wheels and then Spoked wheels later on.

Mark, I like your vids 👍, a question on cleaning a motor, is electrical tuner cleaner OK to use on it? Enjoy your commentary while you work👍, take care .👋😎🛤🚂

      Hi Jeff
Yes, you can use Tuner cleaner.... it too evaporates quickly and won't leave behind any residue. Thank you for reaching out....
      Keep tinkering !

    Hello,
I really like your videos and hope you are back recording soon. Maybe you can help me out. Do you have a part number for the brushes that fit your brushplate? I have looked and can't seem to find them. Maybe you know where I can find a part number list for these motors.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ken

@@mt.trainrestorations5931 Hi Mark, if I get desperate I might take you up on that. I don't want to take what you have because I don't think anyone is making them anymore. Jeff at ttender said he can't find a supplier for them and I guess he is the goto guy. He lists them as 150-bh and 150-b, but I don't know if that's the correct part number. How do you find part numbers for different engines? I have three 248 engines with three different brushplates. I am only sure of the part number for one of these brushplates and I don't know what the brush part numbers are either. Thanks a lot for your offer and your help Ken

Hi Mark, thanks for the great videos. I am starting a restoration of a 248 of my own. I will strip and repaint the unit, but I dont know what to do about the numbers. Is there a stamp or decal I could apply when I'm finished?
    Thanks again

      Hi Larry
Yes you can buy on line decals for most old trains these days. Stamps are expensive unless you can use them often enough to justify spending the money. Ebay has many offerings for decals, water slide or peel n stick.
keep me posted on your project.

Hi I just got one of these and it looks really good, wheels excellent shape and it does run though I'm sure it needs a good cleaning as it takes a bit of power to move it around the layout . However, the pick up rollers are very grooved and teh rear sparks a lot I think they can use replacement but it all seems like they are riveted on to a spring plate and those to the engine. How do I replace those?

    • @mt.trainrestorations5931
      @mt.trainrestorations5931  3 года назад +1

Hi There, first thanks for watching and maybe I can help. If your Engine runs a little slow, yes a good cleaning is in order. My video shows the extreme version but you can be the judge of what condition yours is in and decide. As far as the rollers the type that is associated with that engine contact assembly is a two part roller, a center tin and the roller drum. the arm holding the roller can be spread out to release the pin but first the ends are peened over and the smaller one needs ground down to able it to be pulled thru. New pins and rollers are out there to be purchased but suppliers are finding less and less of these available to sale. Ebay may have some. Also Ive seen a replacement type which is one solid piece, a roller with two nubs which would fit the roller arm holes. once squeeze closed the roller will stay in there. Hope this helps.
Let me know how you make out or if there's anything else I can help with.....Thanks Again.... Please Subscribe and you just may see a video on how to replace a roller !
