I swear, these videos just keep getting better!!!! This is definitely my favorite channel, I'll never stop watching! I love the speaker and sound videos the most though, they're my favorite, so it's no wonder! Keep it up!

@@TechIngredients Now I have so many questions! Could DynaMat be used instead? Could you get the same damping by gluing the veneer pane on the outside? Could I take a good pair of vintage speakers and apply these techniques to make them better?
@@warrenbell950Depending on the vintage speakers, there is a good chance that the cabinet resonance was leveraged to augment the drivers - the crossovers may also have been chosen to address cabinet resonance. I generally wouldn't recommend it as a treatment for vintage speakers - either they are good, and you stand to ruin them, or they are bad, and they aren't worth the effort IMHO. DynaMat is a choice, but not as good as the 2part treatment he used - you can also pick up a similar material from box stores used to line potable water tanks - it is nearly identical and has the same properties; you can also buy smaller quantities for testing. I personally don't love VT speakers, but the science behind them as well as the wonderful detail of the video makes this a fantastic choice for an educational channel! Love it!

My love of music just went down the rabbit hole with you, and made me hear the world with different ears!!...Thanks for showing me the matrix!!.It seems!..I started life hearing sound, became a musician and learned too feel, and see sound, and make sound, now I can finally understand it's importance of how everyting relates together!! The beautiful, unlimited, and endless effects that sound can create, for the creater, and too for the listener is magic!!...So inspired to learn more, I choose the red pill Morphious!!
I really liked the explanation of the end-effect reflection. In transmission line theory it's just talked about as an impedance discontinuity but for resonant tube design (think wind instruments like flutes) the resonant length of the tube appears slightly longer than its physical length. That high pressure node that the sound reflects off of occurs not at the exact end of the tube but slightly beyond it, which is easy to understand if you visualize the pressure changes in the air and the non-negligible response time for the surrounding air to rush in to fill the low pressure void emanating from the end of the tube.
Near the end he looks so smug and proud with what he has created... and rightfully so, because this is excellent work!!!

Hi, just came across this a few hours ago. WOW! I built my first set of speakers back in 1978, they lasted about 20 years. I've used Mission 753's since with replacement drivers and x/over components, which I've installed myself. They are still working. I would really like to build these but I don't have the space to do the construction, shame. Even via utube compression, the sound is fab. Well done to you, sir. A great vid explaining the construction/design plainly and simply. One can still dream of the good things.
Kudos to getting rid of the myth about MDF being THE material of choice for speakers!
Also, great to see fullrange speakers properly used here (small cone impedance matched).
The Voight or TQWT designs are decent and easy to build, but you can also get excellent results with TML and horn designs.

would have loved to see a frequency response curve of the finished speakers.
Bravo!
Exactly what I was thinking when it finally ended.
I would love to build these, but what did the finished curve look like? How much bass did you coax out of those little drivers?
After all, you're the one with the test equipment and anechoic chamber.
@@johnny7254 the final product's performance is still a synergistic result of the source, speaker, enclosure, room, and what's in that room, and further - how that room is constructed even plays into what "you" actually hear.
Everything resonates. Those resonances cause harmonic distortion. This means even your walls affect the tone of your listening room depending on how dense or flexible they are. ;)
@@MotivatedMetalworks You'll get no argument from me on anything you've written. Nevertheless, it is more than a mere matter of convention, that we derive specifications for speakers. It is the method by which we compare one loudspeaker to another. Even beyond that, given the level of detail and science brought to bear in this presentation, is absurd to leave out any measure at all, by which a viewer could assess the success of the endeavor.
@@johnny7254 fitting those beasts in his chamber isn't possible, so any response curve presented would be flawed.
However, he could play them outside and get a pretty good idea.
When I build speakers, I try to balance the drivers across the spectrum, and crossover points based on where the curves are most beneficial at the natural roll off points. Once that's done, I design the enclosure to meet my goals - is it a sealed box with no deep base, or can I tune a port to hit another octave lower?
I don't agree with the channel's logic or validity testing on material weight/stiffness as the accelerometer was measuring an impossible occurrence with the thump test. Also, floor weight of speakers is a moot point for most applications (outside of aircraft, boats, and possibly cars), while size is often a critical design element. Doubling the speaker walls increases the outside dimension, as the inside is a calculated and highly constrained space. In most cases, MDF with proper internal bracing will outperform the same thickness plywood, while benefitting from a lower cost.
Transmission lines and horns in general are the exception, but he doesn't state this or why - you can't brace a horn like a ported box, because you'll fuck it's performance up. So in these enclosures, you need stiffer materials.
@@johnny7254 Something else comes to mind when thinking about this video.
About 30 years ago, Popular Mechanics had an article teaching the reader about transmission tubes, and how you could build a subwoofer out of a 4" Realistic (Radio Shack hadn't fallen off their original business model yet, at that time) woofer and PVC fittings.
What the article failed to disclose is that while the micro sub would hit 40hz, it was anemic and not musical sounding doing it.
Planars, infinite baffles, and line arrays all have impressive sonic qualities while also suffering some significant drawbacks. Voigt enclosures aren't exempt either, as they tend to lack authority in the bottom end, or as with folded horns, end up being gigantic enclosures to play through the whole spectrum.
Voigt's share a commonality with planars and infinite baffles, in that the linear distance from the edge of the cone and the port will have a direct impact on where phase cancellation occurs.
At the end of the day - there is no perfect speaker enclosure, and we need to balance our designs with regards to perfection and reality and hope we can afford the point we wish to land on between those two ends. :)
This is the most comprehensive cabinet resonance discussion I've ever seen. You answered questions that I've pondered about for 30+ years. I absolutely loved your approach, your attention to detail, accuracy and material cost. Thank you soo much, what a great start to my week!

I guilt a pair of Voigt Pipes very similar to those in this video about 15 years ago. They sounded very good, especially in terms of mid-range and soundstage. The mid-bass was also sufficient but could likely have benefited from addition of a sub-woofer for added slam. Eventually, I added a tweeter to add "air" to the system. Somehow the Gods decided to have your video link underneath a totally unrelated video I'd just watched and now I know exactly what I'm building.
I will subscribe on the strength of just this video alone.
Thank you.
Thanks!
The single most intelligent and well-made video I have seen to date in ALL of RUclips!
Beaming with pride, this is what a meaningful life brings about, not easy but meaningful. Keep up the great work!!
I love it when someone presents a topic and they go into details on different details; they don't just know their topic at hand, but know related topics to a relevent high degree. I'm loving this video. He sounds like my mind talks on different topics. I have no idea what he's talking about most of the time, but it's convincingly expert level 11 and I wager if anyone disagreed with him, they'd better be ready with a full explanation and sound logic.
Excellent source of speaker insights for audio buffs!
I am so happy to have found this. Look at his passion at the end when he looks at his speaker.
He looks so happy at the end!!! When they start playing it looks like he's holding back a giant smile and maybe a tear or two.
After watching this great technical and educational video I am now inspired to duplicate this build. I can’t wait to start. Thank you for your dedication to perfection and great detail. Please keep it up !!
Explained very well and great instructions and video. Brilliant
Rewarding to listen to what you built, thanks for the videos you make.
I've had my Voigt horns about 30 years, built from one sheet of plywood. Good to see these get a some exposure, good job.
I love this channel!!! Imagine how differently school would be viewed if teachers were half as good as this guy. (Never going to happen, but what is cool, is that unlike the education system, the best can be shared to anyone/everyone) RUclips for the win!
Guess I was pretty fortunate, as the science teachers I had in High School WERE this good, and were such a tremendous inspiration to me that 40 years later I still can't get enough! I don't doubt my last breath on this Earth will probably happen when I'm watching a science video or tinkering with some nifty new technology.
He is smart. He is the perfect nerd!
Fascinating video. I am learning......loved the speakers. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and your design.
