The worst feeling in the world is when your train dives off the train table. My condolences brother it would happen right after you get all that work to make it look so good
Dang things can run fast. hit the corner of the track and flew right off, rolled off the table into the gravel driveway.
Imagine that everyday common toy train soon we'll be 100 years old. America made the best of everything in the old days. The best thing about it was the people were normal.
Yup! I hear ya!!
3/16th scale MARX lots of people don't even know exsist!! Thank You Ron
Yup. Same size as "S" scale American Flyers. Thanks for watching!
Good work Ron. The painting impressed me more - really nice. It has changed the locomotive completely, from almost a toy to a decent model. Thanks for sharing!
The beautiful model is Mademoiselle Bardot, by the way.
Thank you very much! and yes the Lovely Brigette
Enjoy all of your videos. You keep getting better
Thank you!
I have the front end of a Lionel and 1000 the Union Pacific Dreamliner the diecast first unit. It was painted solid red as so I was going to paint it orange instead. The train shop owner had a heart attack and had to take it easy so he made a little project out of my m1002 unit he painted it black and did the New York Central lightning stripe paint Scheme on the locomotive hand transfers and lines and everything. He must have put so many hours into that locomotive it would have broke his heart if I had it repainted my favorite color instead. I think that that part was made in 1939. You think of the world that was back then. Everything from that time is piece of History. I cannot believe that shop is asking $1,100 for a 1950s Lionel Hudson. Love watching your videos
$1100 would be fair if it was in cherry condition with an immaculate condition box and shipping box. This one might be closer to $600-$700. Fellers want them and want to keep up with the other feller down the street who has one.
Brigitte Bardot🥰 Nice job on the restoration of that Marx! She deserves to bring joy to some fellers another 40-50 yrs 😀👍
Yup! and Thanks for your kind words :-)
It's too bad the paint got chipped but still amazing it didn't break from the fall! This thing is an absolute tank!
It broke my heart when it rolled off the track and onto the ground. It was in slow motion with a verbal "NNNNNNnnnnnnoooooooo........."!
Being able to use 1/4 nutdriver on a model train is pretty cool, lol 🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
Yup, Had to pull out the "full" size tools to work on these :-)
When I was a little kid my older brother had the 999. I loved playing with it and it’s cool couplers. Wish I still had it.
I think I had one as a youngster.
thank you
You're welcome
Still loving your videos Ron !🤌
Glad you like them!
Very happy with this
Glad You like it Michael!
Love your videos Ron! Great job on that old Marx set. It’s nice to see an ole Marx get a little time I the limelight for a change. Love it because I not only have my classic Lionel trains, but I still have my fathers, as well as my uncles Marx trains as well. Guessing the beautiful model in your video’s is very entertaining as well. Today’s top model picture is none other than the beautiful Brigette Bardot!!
Thanks for your kind words! Yup them Marx are just as important to some young kids growing up back in the 40's to 60's. Bridgette....gunna have to find some of her old movies.
Awsome Job Ron Keep it Up.👍
Thanks so much!
I really loved the video. And the beautiful lady you pictured is Bridgette Bardot.
Thank you, and you are correct!
A trainload of template toy cars they resonate and sing when you have a line of them running along. They call it when your Train sings. It's only something that happened with tin plate train. Unique.
I do like all the sounds of the tin plates running.
Those old Marx 3/16 trains are great. I have my dad's old set from when he was a kid and I have picked up a lot of additional pieces so I can run it without it being out of proportion with everything else on the tracks.
Marx made very few roadnames and styles in those cars. They had 2 roadnames for the 999 locomotive NYC and Nickel Plate (super rare). They had the NYC 333 larger locomotive. They had 6 different boxcars GAEX, PRR, NYC, SP, UP, NYNH&H. They had 2 cabooses NYC and READING. They had 2 livestock cars PRR (super rare) and Santa Fe. They had 3 flatcars Nickel Plate, Boston & Maine, and C&O. They had 4 gondolas Texas & Pacific, Nickel Plate, B&O, and PRR. They had a C&O high sided gondola. They had a Lehigh New England hopper. They had 3 tank cars Niacet, Shell, and Cities Services. They had a set of 3 NYC passenger cars.
There were a few other cars like a crane car and a searchlight car, but for the most part the entirety of the Marx 3/16 fleet is what I listed above. If ever a person were going to collect an entire area of the toy train world, the Marx 3/16 production would seem like a fairly easy place to start.
WOW!! You have your Marx history down. Thank you for sharing that good information :-)
I just love it when " things " splash down into the ultrasonic cleaner 💥
....... good things are about to be embarked upon ..Hahahaha.
Great video, Ron ❕
Your mishap reminds me of my 2016 trip off the layout table in my basement with a concrete floor, at the time, with my Lionel GP-9 with railsounds / DCC By the time the dust settled, the board was fried, speaker cracked, and shell was in 3 pieces with small parts flying out like shrapnel.
....I have to get myself an ultrasonic cleaner...😎
The incident of '16. Sounds horrible :-( Ultrasonics are the BOMB. I just use simple green in em.
Yes,Ron the incident of 2016 was horrible in that it set me back by about $ 125 or more in parts to repair that flying Lionel locomotive. And the background to it all - was that I was constructing a new layout, and I had just laid the track powered by a couple of ZW's and I figured that I run the GP-9 around the layout and it was moving along nicely at about 40 % power at a safe speed when all of a sudden the locomotive went to max throttle and airborne, while the one ZW went into a cloud of blue smoke , followed instantly by a big pop, flash, and grey smoke.
I had just gotten the ZW " overhauled " by a retired Lionel repair service technician. That was the first time I had used the ZW since I had it " overhauled ", after it had been in storage since 1978.
I took it back to the retired Lionel repair technician, and darn near threw it at him. His response was to offer me free of charge another ZW-R , that has caused me no problems since 2016. However, he was not going to offer any replacement for the GP-9. That was on me. Needless to say, I never used him again for anything.
Ron. do you have any recommendations or wise sage advice regarding ultrasonic cleaners that are best used for our train purposes?
@@franktino6676 Holy Moly! Heck of a deal there. Sorry to hear about all of this.
@@franktino6676 I just bought a large one off amazon that had a lot of good reviews. Want it big enough to put a shell inside of it. Mine is a Rovsun 613HT.
Great job! A little ding here and there adds to it....Vintage fun, those ol' Marx engines are hard to kill..
Thanks
Great job my friend. Looking good.
Thank you!
Even if the wax doesn't add shine to the paint, it adds a significant layer of protection to the paint and those areas with exposed bare metal. It also doesn't allow dust to settle and stick as easily making future maintenance easier. As for pulling the James Dean with the engine, hey, it better matches the rest of the set now! A little distressing never hurt anything ;-))
I did end up waxing all the cars. I believe the same as you. Gives em some protection :-)
@@classicmodeltrains Nice job very professional like it came fresh out of the factory.
Great work Ron!
Many thanks!
Thanks Ron, great video. I was given an old Marx set like this and I used to let my Grade 8 boys work on it in my classroom. They got it running pretty well. Now that I’m retired, I think I’ll have a go at doing this kind of service and repainting on it. Nice change from my HO layout. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching & commenting. It is a nice break to switch around with different gauge stuff.
You didn't damage the paint, you began restoring an authentic antique appearance.
Good way to look at it :-)
Nice job. Makes a nice set. Keep up the three rail
Thanks, will do!
Nice job Ron
Thank you
Fantastic job Ron! It’s a shame you dropped it. I really like the paint job you did on her.😊
It broke my heart, Fell in slow motion and everything :'-(
I’m here for the classic model trivia 😂😂
Best research project I've undertaken ;-)
Sweet job, Ron! I love it when you salvage ANY basket case (Lionel/AF/Marx/HO) and return it to the rails! 😊
Thanks Joseph! All gauge basket cases need love :-)
Wow! What a nice job! I'm sure you could touch up the nicked painted, you have the skills!
Thank you very much!
Very nice. I have that set and the 999 locomotive is in excellent shape. The Pacemaker box car and NYC caboose are both a little scratched up but the gons are clean. The 999 numbers on the side have a white, rectangular border around them. Nice job on the restoration.
Thank you very much! Sounds like a variation out there I was not aware of. Will have to keep my eyes out for it.
nice job,, cool music too
Thanks!
Looks fantastic! Even with the slight imperfections. As always another great video.
Thank you very much!
TY
:-)
I like the way you painted, hilighting parts of the boiler and below the cab, and the new railing.
It really makes it "pop" now. Thanks :-)
looks just like a factory job!
Thank you! This paint job came out real nice. Until It fell from the table :-(
Try using Mr. Hobby Super Clear semi-gloss or gloss clear "paint" to put a shine on that Pacemaker boxcar.
And you can touch up the paint on the loco. Just spray on a localized layer of dullcoat over it.
Sounds like a good idea, Thanks :-)
I had a marx side smoker.
Marx had pretty slick tricks.
Yup! Marx did make some cool stuff
As an '80s kid, my first thought on the classic model was, "she looks kinda like Claudia Schiffer."
Bridgett Bardot
Classic era toy
Yup
Great Job Ron!! Thanks restoring another model train
Many thanks!
Top notch job!
That thing was meant to survive a direct hit from a nuke!
You really brought that engine back from a clown show!!!
I’d be proud to display and run that train!
Thank you Jeb! Dang thing hit the first corner too fast and rolled off the plywood. It was in slow motion as It fell and you could hear the "NNNNNNNnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooo..........." from me.
@@classicmodeltrains
Been there my friend, many times!
lol
OK NICE JOB
Thanks!
Hello Ron how are you doing I like your videos you make me laugh also how was your holidays
Good evening Paul. Thank you for your kind words on my video's. My Holidays treated me well. I hope yours did also.
@@classicmodeltrains mine's we're good
The Lovely Bridget Bardot!
yup!
i got 2 of those, both are new york centrals and they run like a top!
Marx sure made good runners !!
A similar thing happened to me with a Marx train. They are like little kids running around and playing catch me if you can. It made me so mad also. Dented a few cars that were in mint condition. I thought I was going to turn off the throttle, but I turned it up instead.
Yup! Them little buggers move fast and fly off the corners. 1/3 throttle WAY TO MUCH!!
Great work this turned out good :) you are great at train repairs.
Thank you very much!
Just received a 999 set, but mine came with a New York, New Haven and Hartford boxcar and a little red Reading caboose. Thanks for the cleanup tips!
Right on! Hope you get the 'Ol Gal running the rails soon
B B, of course, nice job.
Yup! Even got the nickname right :-)
Great work Ron! Turned out great! Sorry about the nicks. Just get some silver paint and some flat black and touch it up. Run a little Matt varnish over the silver and you should be set! The set really cleaned up very nicely!!!
Thanks Erick. I was heart broken when I picked it up off the ground. Little bastards go fast and fly off the almost 90 degree corners of that crappy O-27 track.
@@classicmodeltrains I remember my old Marx train from the 70s. Yep flew like a rocket. I still need to service that as we used our Lego trains for around the tree this year as I could not find enough 027 track. I repainted a tyco Pacific and just got decals details stripes ect all done and dropped the metal boiler and scratched the paint and decals all up. I understand your frustration.
Excellent job! I have to say, you have inspired me to pull my old Tyco sets and attempt cleaning and maintenance to bring them back to life. I was hesitant for years to do it, but you have given me the inspiration and confidence to give it a go. Thank you
That is awesome! Hope you get them back up and running :-)
Another great video. I’ll have to go through my old tin train and get it all spiffy again. Wouldn’t hurt to attach the track to a board and build up a little scene with some period accessories.
Thanks! Sounds like you have a great plan
Ron I hate that after fixing the train that you crashed it. Oh well it happends to the best of us. Loved your video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you :-)
Nice!
I believe you can get replacement axle bushings from the Train Tender. I remember a couple vendors at local train shows that had them as well.
That is the only thing I have replaced on Marx locomotives. They drop in with the wheels removed.
Look at it this way, you added a little character to it. The locomotive and cars came out great. 👍
Thanks for the info!
Oh brother 😢after all that work and then it turns into a train 🚂 wreck! {pardon the pun}😊Been there done that. And you were so good natured about the whole thing! I gonna subscribe just for that alone. BTW yours truly did learn some good tips & tricks. Excellent video. Kudos 😊
Greetings! Thanks for watching and a Subscribing. There was a lot of emotion that took place off camera when that loco went airborne. Lessons that are learned the hard way are the ones most remembered. I learned that I need railings in place the next time :-)
Bridget, or something like that. Now that engine has the character that you tried to take away from it by making it all shiny and new. Hilarious...
Bridgett Bardot. Oh so Karma got me huh? Daaaannnngggg!
being 100% honest, the old paint isn’t too bad
The original all black, or the re-paint I scuffed off from a layout to gravel driveway transition? Shockingly it did not get scuffed to bad.
@@classicmodeltrains the repaint, definitely not the worst o gauge repaint ever
Bridget Bardot
Yup!
Nice job Ron; I think the after restore nicks accidentily addded are a bonus to the realism. Consider subscribing; you are a funny guy! All the best in th new year!
Thanks! A few other fellers have mentioned the same thing. nicked up paint.....kinda supposed to be there ;-)
Did you forget the 333 steam engine. The most detailed dicast engine. The 999 was just semigloss black paint.
What do you mean did I forget? The 999 is Marx first die-cast locomotive. An Atlantic 2-4-2. First available in 1941. The 333 was first available in 1948 and was a Pacific 4-6-2. I just made a video about this particular 999 and its journey.
Brigitte Bardot! Hey Ron, enjoy watching your videos. Got any “Boston and Maine”? That’s my favorite railroad. Stay strong.
Your right on the Classic Model. I just gave the loco's a scan and I done seem to have any B & M
You know what they say. Once you go o scale you never go back 😂
O is certainly easier to work on. Very Robust!
You dropped it that sucks. I did the same thing with a old train I just bought taking it out of the case fell and broke the shell I was so mad now it’s just a shelf queen turned so u can’t see it. We all have the butter hands lol
Yup. It fell off the layout. high speed turn. BUT...... I have fumble a few more in my life as well ;-)
Thanks for doing and sharing what you do! What's the green stuff in your ultrasonic cleaning tank?
Your welcome! I use 100% simple green to remove paint. I use 50-50 mix in a ziplock baggie to clean grease/ oil off small parts
That model looks like Charo
Bridgett Bardot
Bridget Bardot, I think.
Yup!
Roy, I've watched just about all of your videos. They really hold my interest and I enjoy your humor. After watching a few videos, I've learned some electromechanical maintenance stuff, and some new terms, like scoob, and wobbly pops LOL. What year is that pickup truck in the beginning of some of your videos? My brother had a 1971 Chevy C10, and it sort of reminds me of your truck. Please keep those great videos coming. Thanks!
Thank you for all your kind words and supporting of my channel! My Pickup is a 1972 Chevy K-20. 3/4 ton 4X4, money pit. I'm not sure what's more expensive....modeling trains or fixing up old vehicles :-)
Next time you drop an engine off the track, make sure you land it in a bucket of water. That may or may not have happened to one of my dad's N scale engines when I was quite young! Still runs, too. I think being N scale if it had landed on the floor that would've killed it.
Initially I thought the old paint really wasn't too bad, until I saw how your new paint turned out. Very nice! Maybe that engine is related to Mater, dent's worth keeping. Next thing you know, you'll be waxing the furnace! Well, maybe not. But my grandpa did, so the story goes!
May or may not have happened........I love it! Some of them furnaces from the old days were pretty fancy. I can see a feller putting wax on them
@@classicmodeltrains Well, my grandpa was a steam engine fireman. So he kept his engines greased, oiled and polished. So its only natural to do his furnace too! :)
It's like that steam locomotive is going through a class 5 shopping. Steam locomotives real or toys run forever with a little bit of Maintenance and care. It is a shame we do not have the Prototype anymore trains employ people and they were still cheaper than diesels just like when they destroyed the trolley Network they destroyed the steam locomotive and its Associated industry as well. Steam locomotives represent a prosperous America we will never have again.
Tradesman and skillsets evolve over time. Some trades die off, others are born and prosper. Thats how I have to look at it. I have better skills than a 30 year old Feller. He has some skills I will never gain. Its a give and take.
@@classicmodeltrains running a steam locomotive it's not something you learn in a book. You start at the student fireman and then you are assigned to all the shit run but gradually you work your way up the ladder your skills improve your train handling skills improve I knew conductors who will shave with a straight razor in the Caboose train would get underway and they wouldn't cut themselves because the engineer handled the train so well. It was a Mark of skill that you could pull a train out of the yard and not spilled coffee out of the conductor's cup in the Caboose. The diesel instituted the policy of wait for tonnage. Shippers did not like to have to pay per diem charges on an empty car waiting for train to come get it. When a shipper calls a line to tell them to come pick up an empty car and they come in an hour and pick up that car that is customer service. With steam megatrain did not matter because you would still need to have a crew p e r locomotive so instead of one humongous train you ran for small ones. Since steam locomotive 4 Branch lines were generally cast-off Mainline equipment they always were kept hot so there was no problem with sending a train out to get cars. When a brand new diesel locomotive was assigned to branchline all of a sudden the branchline became unprofitable because you have to pay for a brand new locomotive instead of just the repairs at running cost of an old steamer. During World War II 95% of rail traffic was steam-powered buy American coal if we were an oil-based economy during World War II things would have been a lot different
Frustrating with the chips in the paint. But it still looks amazing. Runs nice also! Phenomenal!✌️
Yes it is. Wondering if I should just strip it down and do it again. It came out better that I though, but now it's "tainted"
@@classicmodeltrains that's a tough one! It would be nice? 🫵
Great video!!! It's so nice to see those old locomotives brought back to life. Really nice video. How do you dry the cars after you wash them? Do you put them in the oven? Thanks! All the best!
P.S.
Was that Brigitte Bardot?
I just dry them off with a soft towel. Thanks for your kind words, and you are correct with the classic model :-)
Nice rebuild! Sorry you dropped it but those old trains are tough.
Thanks! Dang thing shot off the track. They really move!!
The March engines that have the gear extending all the way to the bottom of the wheel will not go see 1027 switch will only go through a mark switch
Yup!
dont feel bad i dropped my freshly painted red box car and gave it some paint chunks unfortunately it happens luckily the decals i was able to hide most of it with those
Dang accidents
@@classicmodeltrains ikr lol
Did you use dull coat on the gloss black after you painted it, or is that a satin or matte clear?
Also, how do you remove the number board out of the shell?
Thanks
I sprayed with gloss, added decals, then sprayed with dull. The number board was glued in. Push on it from the outside.

Imagine that once upon a time someone went to work all day they would make good quality toy trains cuz everything was good quality in the old days everything was built solid and built to last.
