This is Babymetal's signature song, almost like an incantation to bring the fox god to a concert. There's no true gig without it.
The song is so good is because it had to be. It was written by Norimetal (Syncopation) and arranged by Yuyoyuppe (monochrome). Koba, their producer/creator, hand picked them from semi-obscurity like proffessor X, to be part of team Babymetal, and made them both prove themselves by forcing them to bring their top tallents and skills to this song. It's the toughest and most important song Yuyoyuppe had to work on, and was reworked many, many times before koba was satisfied. So it's a labour of love for all involved, and you can feel it was. It will stay as fresh as the day it was created, probably forever.

@melvinthinks Yuyoyuppe is a metal Vocaloid producer. He has several songs in the Project Diva video games by Sega. They're like Guitar Hero for Vocaloid. He also arranged Pardon Me by Hanabie which is their most popular song. Pardon Me is a little bit like Megitsune. They both have the synthetic shamisen.

Excellent reaction, that was fun.😄 Well done getting tickets to see them at the O2, you will be shattered by the end of that!🤘🦊
'Megitsune' is one of their older songs, released in 2013 and the first song after they separated from their parent group to become an independent band, it regularly tops fan polls for favourite song - they have also played it live more than any of their songs.

It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks are so prominent in the video🦊) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.

They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe.
Being an official music video the audio is obviously from the studio recording, so you won't be hearing the Kami Band (they are the support for live performances, they don't do the studio recordings - we only know of one, guitarist Leda Cygnus, being involved in recording guitar and bass for some of the songs).
If 'Rondo of Nightmare' is next you will be treated to the Kami Band playing their 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' intro (be sure to use the 7 minute long live at Budokan, Black Night video from 2014). Also don't be surprised when you don't see all 3 girls. Su-metal will be doing that solo - Yui and Moa were taking a break back stage.
One more thought, you mentioned 3 songs in 1. You need to watch the official video for 'Iine' (that is iine pronounced ee-neh, not Line and it means 'so good' like a thumbs up emoji). It was the second song they released (2011) - that one will really catch you out!

Great reaction... you got points for dancing too. 😁 Thanks!
"Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one: 381 times... and counting!
It was released in June 2013. Su-metal was 15 years old while Yuimetal and Moametal were both 13 (about to turn 14) back then.
The style sub-genre is electronicore, a mix between electronica and metalcore with a hardcore style breakdown.
That breakdown hits hard and (apart of those pig squeals) the melody is from a well known Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms).
The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so, vixen. Hence the "kitsune" masks everywhere.
In Japanese folklore, the "kitsune" is an entity capable to transfigure into a human form (mainly into a young lady) with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So, they sing that they aren't "kitsunes" but "megitsunes", "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes", as the lyrics say. It's basically a women empowerment song.
BABYMETAL fans are known collectively as "The ONE" and "kitsune" / "megitsune" individually. So, you can tell this song is important!
And guess why we put a "kitsune up" instead of the devil's horns... 🤘🦊
The composer is Norikazu Nakayama (aka Norimetal). He's my favorite BABYMETAL composer/lyricist.
It took 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is one of their best songs (if not the best).
In my opinion, this music video is a masterpiece. Its locations have become pilgrimage destinations for fans around the world:
    - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo (Noh theater) at Asagaya Shinmeigu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals.
    - The shrine right before the breakdown with the orange-ish torii gates is the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto. The girls were so happy that the director traveled to Kyoto just to film that sequence.
I am lucky enough to have visited both locations during my trip to Japan (among other incredible places) last February / March. 😊
See you at the O2 next May.

Haha nice one! This is their 5th song ever, and their first single as an independent group. A classic fan favorite that’s performed live the most: ~380 times to date!
Despite the playfulness, the lyrics are quite deep! This song dispels the traditionally derogatory meaning of “Megitsune”, a conniving deceptive female fox.
Babymetal says that women have always been actresses because the double standard of hiding emotions in public (“smiling on face, crying in heart”). However, the definition of “the ideal woman” is changing with the march of time.
While women are fated to bloom then fade, they will never disappear. So “We will shoot up our fireworks!!”

On the first two BM albums I think the song writing was at it's strongest and Megitsune is one of their best.
In Japanese mythology foxes are shape shifters and the lyrics liken women to vixens as they have to wear many faces and society often requires them to hide their true feelings. The dance is also important as it starts with Yui and Moa freeing Su from her obi (sash) so she can dance with her legs widely separated which contrasts with the traditional dance in the breakdown where the legs are held together. The kitsune (fox) has become a symbol for Babymetal which is interesting as it's a kami (spirit) associated with Inari who is the deity for a good harvest and prosperity and success in business.
When Su reveals that her microphone holds a knife she says "Name tara ikan zeyo" which is usually translated as "Maidens should not be underestimated"; it's a famous line from a Japanese gangster movie that can also be translated as "Don't shi* with me", so it carries a lot of weight.
One thing about the musicians who back BM. The Kami band members seldom play on the recordings, they use session musicians.
Next do "Rondo of Nightmare, Budokan Black Night"...you'll get a guitar fix.
Then do "Tales of the Destinies" for a prog rock fix.

Megitsune is one of the most important songs for Babymetal and the MV is one of their best.. Su claims that this is one of her most difficult things. It is based on Kitsune. In japanese mythology they are messenger for the gods. And in fact it has multiple backgrounds. One of the most infurirating one is that female foxes can turn into humans and the story is that fenale foxes force their family that the father has to take care of the kids, while the reality was the complete opposite.. and the surprising thing of this song was: you totally miss thecpoint. Demales have to carry multiplebroles. Makeup helps them to achieve these goals. Females are already fighting for their families, before anyone sees something.

Re: The Kami Band... If you're that hyped about them here, you'll really enjoy Rondo. That's all I have to say. :)

You are gonna love seeing them live. I saw them last night in Anaheim California. It was my second time seeing them. I first saw them at Sick New World in Vegas back in April I believe and they were my favorite band to watch (I love Slipknot and SOAD, but Babymetal was better).

Cheers Jeremy! If they are better than SOAD and Slipknot live, then I'm in for a treat 😁

I'm a new subscriber. Loving your channel. Am I right in thinking, you haven't reacted to Baby Metal, Gimme Chocolate?! That was the world's introduction to Baby Metal! Also, highly recommend Galneryus : Angel of salvation live. You won't be disappointed!

Welcome Gavin and thanks for subbing 😊 Plenty for you to binge on in the meantime, but no, you're right "Gimme Chocolate" has not been covered yet. I'm pretty new to them so a lot for me to explore.

I have heard their entire 1st album though, so am familiar with the track. But that wont prevent me reacting to live versions of the songs in the future 👍

And, did I promise too much with the music video for this song? It's just beautiful and cute. And in no live version I've ever heard was the Sakura breakdown in the middle of the song as good as in the studio recording. But that doesn't mean that the live versions are bad. Some even have really epic intros before the song really starts.

I always prefer live versions over the official MV's because it's what music is all about for me personally, but the fans were adamant I had to watch the MV for this one 😊

Great reaction mate and yes, get your stamina up if you want to survive the O2 show next May, its gonna be wild!
Megitsune is a fantastic song and hasn’t lost its greatness over the years. No wonder they play it pretty much at every show (which also gives the girls the chance for some shenanigans during the breakdown buildup lol)
Can’t wait to see your RoN reaction! Stay metal ❤🤘🦊🔥
