Hello James

We Finally Got Train To Busan Kill Count!
Thx

Yon-suk is such a great antagonist in this film because he’s essentially what Seok-woo would have become. At the start of the movie Seok-woo is friendly with Yon-suk and looks down on ‘lower class’ characters like Sang-hwa and the homeless man. It’s seeing Yon-suk throw everyone else under the bus while other characters risk their lives to look out for one another that drives Seok-woo’s character development.
Very well said 👏👏👏
Yeah he's very well-handled, and it's only fitting that Yon-suk was the "final boss" of the movie and the last step in Seok-woo's character arc. So well-written!

You have no idea how hard I cried at that ending. It hurt so much to see it. Su-An's singing of "We'll meet again when the flowers bloom.." shattered my heart HARD.

It's the same song Nani sings in Lilo and Stitch the night before CPS comes to take Lilo away
@@gwendolynrobinson3900honestly this explains a lot lol. must have unlocked that subconscious memory because i cried a lot at that too!
As sad as that ending is, it isn't as bad as watching Night of the Living Dead for me.
At least Su-an and the pregnant woman survive. I was absolutely beside myself the first time I saw this because I was worried that they would get shot by the soldiers in the end.
18:47 in-gil wasnt just too slow, she deliberately stayed put. she smiles and shakes her head at her sister before the horde takes her. i always interpreted it as her seeing the heartless behavior of yon-suk and the rest of the front car passengers and just losing her faith in humanity and letting herself die rather than continue on like that
This + she was shoving Su-an and Sang’s wife forward to get them into the safety of the cart. She knew she wasn’t going to make it with them so she was still trying to save those two 😭
I like this, plus it fits because her sister does the exact same thing moments later, so that makes sense
I thought it was just her knowing that she couldn't make it and sacrificing herself as a snack to the zombies so the others could get away?
@@Bucko_Billas a snack?
I mean not to be rude but theres not much she could have done there other than that tbh.@@firstnamelastname153
Seokwoo's death scene is devastating. His character arc is him going from a selfish man unwilling to help others and ends with him getting bit because he was protecting other people, and he makes the final sacrifice of separating from his daughter to spare her and Yumi from his zombie form.
I thought it'd be easier to get through on the Kill Count than in the actual movie, but nope. Crying in the club rn. Amazing kid actor work by Kim Su-an too.

How are 50 soldiers not able to kill a few zombies, while one man can manage to literally kill 6 on his own
Makes you think about how the zombies in the walking dead somehow beat thousands of soldiers who literally had tanks
@Mr Peashooter that still doesnt explain it
That depends on the situation. Maybe the soldiers did kill some zombies, but they were overrun by a zombie horde. Meanwhile, one man could be in a position where he is able to kill 6 zombies. Anything can happen in a zombie outbreak.
@@lilboicoen 160k people die in the world every single day. TWD thing about the virus was that everybody was infected, and turned when they died, regardless of cause. By the time isolated locations (hospital morgues, retirement homes, car crashes on crowded roads) realise "zombies" are afoot, and the appropriate response is sent, soldiers are already facing hordes. That's not even considering the paper-pushers and politicians involved, as well as our general impulse to be decent to fellow people (humans are the only animal species to seek sick fellow humans to take care of them), all of which would hurt the efficiency of soldiers. Your average army boy would not be ok with the idea of torching friends and families in a scorched earth policy, the only thing that might work.
From what I saw on a comment for that scene in a diff YT vid, S Korean soldiers are generally conscripted youths who are only in the military bc it’s mandatory to serve two years in it. Bc of that, it makes sense they were taken out so easily, as they were both underprepared and only there in the first place cause of legal reasons. They said it might be a commentary on either the state of the S Korean military, or maybe on the ineffectiveness of the draft law.
The death of In-Gil and Jon-Gil is actually really symbolic, representing the two polarizing mindsets that the elderly have towards the younger generations. One is cynical, one is hopeful. In the chaos of civilization falling, it was ironically the hopeful one of the two elders that gave up on the state of society, giving her own life willingly. Jon-Gil, being the cynical one, acknowledges and scoffs at how messed up things are because her optimistic sister gave up before she did. The already cynical person goes out with a spiteful move that ruined it for everyone.
Sheesh that’s depressing that the optimist died first
I think she was a hero, leaving people so selfish and unthinking as those alive would only get more people killed needlessly in the long run.
Survival of the fittest of mind.
I cried more when they died

14:51 "Animated films are films too, ya know?"
THANK YOU!!
It seems that, much like horror films, people don't really respect animations.
It can be really seen with a lot of awards, but I think it was most apparent when the Oscars pretty much decided to create a whole new category for animated films after Beauty and the Beast almost won best picture.
I mean, it's easier to create a whole new category, than to simply acknowledge that a "cartoon" can sometimes be better than "normal movies", right?
It's really nice to know that James also appreciates and respects animation.

Reading the other day that Romero thought, towards the end of his life, that he'd amounted to nothing (In not so many words) makes it heartbreaking when watching Train to Busan. Yeon Sang-ho took the best lessons from his body of work and made something pretty special: a Romero-esque that feels like it was made by the man himself. Bro having a 7-9 year old like that say "that's why mom left" has to hurt more than anything, cause children will tell you stuff like that truthfully, while people 14+ will do it just to hurt you
as someone with two teenaged siblings who selfishly bicker with our mother and each other at times... Yeah that's very accurate and i wish that teen bs would stop.
@@sundalosketch4769 me too parents don’t deserve that
that is truth right there.
@@sundalosketch4769 I straight up apologized to my parents for my teenage bullshit. Definitely did not deserve it.
I'm assuming you picked 14+ because you're that age or around it (give or take a couple of years) and I hate to break it to you but even 14 year olds are still considered children and are apt to say and do things that, while considered on purpose, can be tied to the fact that they're still young and developing. Your brain doesn't stop developing until you're around 25 years old. When people pick specific ages, I assume that they're around that age and are going off of their personal experiences because 14 isn't much different from 15 and 16 or 12 and 13.
I said some hurtful things to my parents when I was a teenager and I can't say that they always did a great job raising me. But now, I have a great relationship with my parents. I've long since grown up and left the house and they've had time to reflect on the choices they made and how they raised me, as have I. Teenagers sometimes have it rough with friends, parents or close relationships because they're still learning and developing and that development doesn't stop until well into adulthood.
I've never cried over a movie, but that little part of that scene instantly made me tear up and get chills over my whole body, to the point where I was genuinely supprised

The old lady sister who “didn’t make it” actually intentionally let herself get taken. Not for a sacrificial reasoning but more because it shows her looking at how these fellow living people have basically condemned them to die and she decides right then and there that she’d rather die then “live” with people like that. It’s why it shows her just standing there and shaking her head. Saying "I love you" in asian culture is not a common thing between parents and their children. Asians mainly show their love and affection towards each other through actions because as they say "actions speak louder than words". Parents show their love by giving their children gifts, spending time with them, etc and in return, children show their appreciation by studying hard, giving respect, and lot more.
So yes, its a cultural thing

I cried 3 times the two times you've mentioned plus when sungyeong ( the wife of the bad ass) almost refused to leave because her husband was gonna die. And then the husband said the unborn baby's name I bawled at that bit
its the only film where 1 out of 2 people who watch it have cried, like the emotional investment it gets you with is insane
Same
@@flo4930 me too! I cried 3 times 😢
Her performance reminded me of Kim Sae-ron's performance in "Man from Nowhere" just heart wrenching.
Best Comment at 24:22 "AW COME ON! WHAT IS THAT?!!! 39 BODIES IN THE RIVER? QUIT FLOATING AROUND! JOSH IS TRYING TO COUNT YOU!"
I've never cried to a horror movie before, but every time I watch this I tear up. Great movie
The CEO represents the main character in the future if he doesn’t change his way.
Selfish, workaholic, lives with his mom, etc. (Too many similarities to be coincidences.)
true as the phrase says "you die as a hero or you live long enough to become the villian"
love your pfp btw
In SK its actually pretty normal to live with your parents longer. Housing is so expensive and the deposits are especially insane so its really not financially viable for the kid to get up and leave as soon as they turn 18. When the child gets married, one of the families pays the deposit for the house/apartment/etc.
Definitely different in this case but it explains why they're both so comfortable staying with their parents.
@@CyrPhantom Usually in Asia, Family relation is much closer than western countries, in Indonesia its normal for males to live with their parents and siblings until your 30s and sometimes 40s because they usually are the ones bringing in money for the parents who are now frail in their elderly age.
@@MrDuck-po3wy This as well! Alot of eastern cultures and even some of European cultures have closer family bonds that is really uncommon in the west. I think alot of it was lost because of the concept of the nuclear family that was really pushed in America especially in the 1950's.
How is your mom living with you a negative thing wtf 😂😂
Fun fact to make you cry!: Aloha 'Oe was originally written as a love song, but ended up being Queen Lili'uokalani's 'farewell to family' as the US invaded and annexed Hawaii. Su-An originally learnt it for her father, a sign of love, but then also sang it at the end of the film as a 'farewell to family'. Holy shjt what a masterful writing decision.
Look. The movie already made me cry. Rewatching it in the kill count made me cry. I don't need to cry anymore! (Thank you for the fun fact!)
The movie made me cry, the Kill Count made me cry and now THIS COMMENT IS MAKING ME CRY
Thanks for this fact. It makes the movie ending and the real life history of Hawaii's last queen even sadder.
Thanks for commenting this so I don't have to. Well, let's be honest, I wasn't going to comment this because I'm lazy, but I'm glad that someone else knows this.
I haven’t even seen the full scene and that ending almost made me cry
Damn, the ending still got me crying even if it’s short clips

What about Cabin in the Woods?
Neither Seokwoo nor his daughter say “I love you” because
1. Yes, it is a cultural thing. Many Asian cultures don’t believe saying “I love you” is the one true way to tell someone you love them. Which leads into the second reason:
2. Seokwoo already has done everything to show how much he loves his daughter. Verbalizing “I love you” simply doesn’t feel necessary.
Anyway, thank you for the amazing work, James. I love how you pay homage to the movie as both a work of art and a medium of cultural and societal values.
If I were younger, I might argue but now that I'm older, I can understand that because I've had people say "I love you" then stab me in the back.
@@jbktpl1245 offf
I felt some one back stab me before
thats why i dont trust friends that say “i love you”
cuz in the end of the day they probably just said that so that you can thing that they are your friends.
@Yuri Lopes what does that mean?
@@jollamasbait Yeah, it's a real shame that people do that.
Yeah in anthropology those are called high-context and low-context cultures. So my Japanese grandparents have never said they love me, but my grandma shows it by cleaning and cooking whenever we visit and we in turn show that by studying hard and respecting them. It’s a sharper contrast with my white European family, where people speak their mind more
Zombies are and always will be my biggest fear
I love how James provides further info about things not even relating to zombies
The whole idea of counting kills doesn’t sound entertaining at all but James has brought me back every week and wanting more thank you
Me and you both
The way he tells the story is what gets me
He's a legend.
What do you mean "doesn't sound entertaining"
It's amazing
Same, been here since Freddy Vs. Jason and watched every one since
Personally, i think saying "i love you" before dying would've just made the moment cheap and they made the right choice to leave the it unsaid and let their emotions tell their tragedy

horror movies, out of any genre, make me cry the most. Not like fear-crying, but if its a really well done movie, then you FEEL palpable releaf when a character is okay and genuine dread when you think something is going to happen to them. This movie did an amazing job at developing its characters and making you feel for them. I cried at the end becuase you FEEL the sadness they they are feeling. The loss and their fear of whats to come next. The train to busan is an amazing movie that had me WHEEPING. The actors NAILED their roles.

Those zombies are so strong!
Maybe they lack object permanence?
Fun Fact: The Actor that played Yon-Suk, did so good at being the villain that he got booed at by the crowd when he was attending the premiere.
Cant tell if that’s an insult, a compliment, or both.
@@qwertyasdf4081 think of it as similar to how people treat the character of Joffrey from Game of Thrones
It seems all the greatest villains get that treatment. I heard the guy who played Walter Peck was called "dickless" from a bus full of people (he was also an awesome jerk of a reporter in Die Hard 1 and 2). Hats off to all the amazing villains out there!
That's some bragging rights there.

ironically, one of the movie’s messages is that people who suffer during an outbreak are more than numbers and tallies, yet the movie is still on the kill count bahaha
i love this movie and i’m so glad it finally got covered ! if you haven’t seen it yet, absolutely watch it first. some scenes just don’t hit as hard if you’re anticipating them
