- The frontier culture meets civilization in rural Virginia. In 1912, a misplaced kiss set off a string of events that pitted a powerful frontier clan against their political rivals and concepts of modern justice. The events that followed, the Hillsville Massacre or the Courthouse Tragedy, shocked and captivated the nation.
The episode is intended for educational purposes. All events are portrayed in historical context. No graphic depictions of violence are depicted.
The History Guy uses media that are in the public domain. As photographs of actual events are sometimes not available, photographs of similar objects and events are used for illustration.

My greatgrandfather was a Hillsville deputy at this, he rode in the posse that pursued the Allens. This is a great concise telling of the events, thanks!

What was so great about him?
Well it was self defense and your great grandfather was a pig and a criminal.

I was so amazed to see this entry. My family has lived in Wythe County (next door to Carroll County) since the earth was cooling. My aunt, who was born in 1904, remembered when this happened and a man came rushing in to tell them that “The Allen’s had shot up the Carroll County courthouse!” I even got to read a contemporary news article about it, but you had more information. Thank you! I love this series.
This is just a general commentary on all the videos of yours that I've watched so far, but you really make me miss the History Channel from back before it became reality TV and alien conspiracies.
I still don’t understand why the History Channel decided to abandon wonderful history programs. Most people would agree that it wasn’t profitable, but I even tried paying for their app for better content. Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed.
The first disaster struck when the History channel turned into the wW II obsessed Hitlery Channel... then insult joined injury and Hitlery channel became the Hysteria channel..

I live in Carroll County, VA and the court house and Allen house are still standing and very much monuments to this day. They represent a horrible past but a history no less.
Ever been to the museum at the courthouse?
o2tank 04 perhaps horrible events are represented, but as stated in the video, it’s representative of the changing times. An era and paradigm shift in the publics frontier mentality in that place at that time. Looking back we are often highly sensitive to certain issues because of our political climate, but the people living then were more akin to war hardened soldiers who get in fist fights for the sheer joy of it. I love the history of your area and county as colorful as it is.

you are what I wish the History channel would be. thank you again. best ever.
when the History channel started, all they had was documentaries on WW2, so much that after a few months we jokingly referred to it as "The Hitler Channel". They really struggled for content in the beginning before they began to self produce decent content.
Then they got bought by some massive corporation and they're not worth watching anymore

What happened to the History channel ?
The "History" Channel is still on the air?
I grew up in the Hillsville area back in the 50's thru a good portion of the 70's. I remember hearing a lot of what was discussed in this video in private conversations among family and friends since the wounds had not healed completely during this time. I left the area in the late 70's and haven't lived there since. So I'm not exactly sure how the people in the area feel about this event today. Thanks for the video!!
Please don't ever stop what your doing here! Superb and wonderful.
Thank you.
My great-great grandfather, Peter Scott was one of the two deputies sent to NC to retrieve the Allen boys. The story has changed hands many times in a 100 years but the account given here is pretty good. Hard to believe that so many guns were allowed into the courthouse.

I’ll echo the sentiment regarding the “history channel”. What you’re doing is excellent, well done, and well presented. The “history channel” would do well to tell us history. Not ancient aliens or whatever malarkey they conjure up these days.

I don't have enough info on either to offer an opinion, but am very interested in hearing your theory as to why this is, if you would be so very kind as to offer it.
@Bill Wade Yep. I live in a pair of sister-cities. The larger one (mine) is predominantly ghettoville, though the city government is always launching largely unsuccessful projects to make it look more like the other one, which is a preppy college town. The preppy college town is the one with the Chuck-E-Cheese.

Feuding old time sociopaths. I have often wondered if sociopathy was a modern day tendency or when it became noticeable. I can see that in 1912 there were sociopaths roaming!
Your right. Sociopaths, Psychopaths, serial killers, serial rapists, etc can be traced back to the 9th.Century.
However, they used words like madness, maniacal and possession.
Though hard to find, there are manuscripts that speak of these hazards long before the words Psychiatric, etc came into existence.

There were a lot of courthouse feuds around the South way back in the day.
Such behavior isn't limited to the South.
I've lived all over the country, & I see this "above the law" behavior EVERYWHERE!!!
Alaska & New Mexico are among the worst. Chicago is notorious for corruption! But it's EVERYWHERE!
@@smc1942 I'm sure that you're right. But, as a native Southerner, I would hear of various stories of old emanating from a courthouse dispute through word of mouth.
@@haledwards4642 ;
I'm not saying it didn't. I grew up in (arguably) the most corrupt county in Texas. The Feds have been there more than once! A Sheriff shot himself, rather than face murder-for-hire charges! I've seen BAD things happen there.
But as work took me across the country, I saw such things everywhere I went. Where I live today is over a thousand miles from where I grew up. And this place is rife with corruption. If you have the right name, you can do anything here. If not, you'll get a ticket for jaywalking.
I know first-hand this kind of corruption is all across the country. Been there. Seen it.

This story could be an award winning movie, no doubt.
Interesting story. Falmouth Massachusetts has a modern take on that story with Melvin Reine and how he terrorized the town for years and never paid for any of his crimes! The story became national when he tried to kill a police officer who was going to testify against him. The officer survived even though his jaw was nearly shot off by a shotgun, but he and his family had to go into hiding for years! Everyone in the town was pretty much terrified of him and his family.

You'll see a bunch of crap about how Allen in a Celtic surname. Then why is it most prevalent in east Anglia where there is nothing but Germanic and Norman names? All these dumb webpages and wikipedia will tell you that Alan mean either "fair" or "handsome warrior" or "little rock" in Gaelic or Welsh. Well, which is it? That's a lot of vague disparity. So the answer is: Neither. It is an evolution of the word "Aryan". Just like how "Iran" comes from that same Sanskrit word for those original people. The fact is that the Allens are originally descended from the Scythian Alan tribe that invaded Rome with the Visigoths and Vandals Germanic tribes. After they entered Europe with their distant Germanic cousins and helped found the Visigothic/Alanic kingdoms of Spain and North Africa, later their descendants settled in Brittany and participated in the Norman invasion of England. Awarded land throughout England and Scotland they settled and intermixed with the locals. So Irish, English and Scottish Allan, Allen, Alan, MacAlan - French Alaine, Spanish/Basque Allende - Welsh Allyn - Porteguese Allenos ... they are all related. They are not Celtic, and that's why their name doesn't make sense in any Celtic language. They are descended Scythians (from a tribe that had probably already heavily mixed with Germans) that thought it would be great fun to crush Europe with the Germans. The descendants of the Alans that remained in their homeland are today known as Ossetians, whoabout a decade ago fought a war in the nation of Georgia for their independence and have become a Russian puppet intimidation state for their trouble.
My dad has said we are also related? Floyd looks A LOT like my dad.
There's no way of knowing that and very unlikely as both his parents can be traced back to the early English Virginian settlements.
@Randy HUTCHINSON Yes, i can't find anything past the Virginian settlements, it's a relatively common name which makes it harder, there's a lot of Allen's set in pockets around England, though lowland Scots are Anglo Saxon there's not that many Allen's, a thing of note is the spelling mainly used in Scotland is Allan, with an 'A' instead of an 'E'
